If his shortlist for a striker consists of

Keane
Cole
Doyle

then get someone in with some knowledge of players abroad. Hard cheese if he doesn't like it.

I bet Zamora would be on that list too.

I would bet my last dollar that if we sign a striker it is one of those listed above.

I would put them in order of likelihood as Cole, Zamora, Doyle, Keane.

If you can read anything into that,  it's that they reckon they can make a lot of money by selling Scott Parker.

aye. it has that sad inevitability about it, just like we all knew Heskey would be arriving.

Information in the Bulgarian Sportal.BG about Stanislav Manolev being a target for Villa, Man City and a top Italian club. It claims Villa are in the front position as they have been interersted in him since they played Litex Lovech last season. Manolev is an agressive right back, who likes to attack on the wing. Bulgarian international. He's 24 years old.Moved to PSV from Lovech and had a very good first season for the Dutch side, scoring a couple of goals.
I asked a guy who works as a scout in England and knows people from Lovech if this is true, he said he hasn't heard anything recently, but he'd ask a few people. I know from him that the rumours Villa were looking before Manolev moved to PSV are true.

Of those 4 the only one that I'd be happy with would be Doyle. There is a quality player in there, and I reckon he could do well for us with (much) better players around him that he has at the moment. Wouldn't like him being the main striker, mind, but would be a good option to have

If we're going for a striker, I see three important aspects he must have:-
1.  Scores more goals than our present lot.
2.  Is a 'different type' than we have, that by being in the team can add another dimension to our game.
3.  If we're spending big, he must be of the right age where by we either have a good resale value or would get good value for our £20m over a number of years.

Not a realistic target, but Tevez is exactly the kind I'm thinking of!

So, of those discussed:-
Keane - a bit old, but I think he fits 1 & 2 if his heart is still in it.  Maybe a decent short term solution for reasonable money if we can't get the right player.
Bent - Certainly fits 1 and 3, but is a bit 'samey' to what we have.
Cole - 1 is debatable, but 2 is a definite no.  He is young though, so might prove decent value.
Doyle - no on all 3 I'm afraid.
Berbatov - yes for 1 and 2 and a big no on 3 as Manure would be looking for big money for him.

If that is our list I'd be looking at Bent or Keane myself.  As I've said before, to get a striker I'm 100% happy with I think we need to shop abroad!

He shouldn't even be on that list and you've picked him out as the one you'd like? Good lord!
I think Doyle is a tidy footballer but a rubbish striker. I would be horrified if we signed him and would honestly prefer to keep Heskey.

I agree.

The type of forward we need is one who is going to score goals regularly.

I would be happy with Keane and Cole. Aslong as Heskey left, as there's no place in a squad for Carew, Cole and Heskey.

I think we're in a minority, Ger, but I rate Doyle too. He's touch and movement have always impressed, he's a tidy finisher and his work rate and attitude are fantastic.

He's one of those players that you're never quite sure how he'll adapt to the step up but I wouldn't be averse to seeing us give it a go.

Keane - no
Doyle - maybe at the price they paid, not at what they'd want
Cole - yes
Berbatov - yes
Carrol - yet to be convinced
Dzeko - yes indeed
