ASTON VILLA PURSUING IRISH QUARTET
Midlanders monitoring transfer market
O'NEILL: Needs to strengthen
By Garry Doyle, 24/04/2010

MARTIN O'NEILL wants to pack FOUR Irishmen into his luxury Villa this summer - with Robbie Keane, Kevin Doyle, Aidan McGeady and Stephen Ireland ALL on his hit-list.

But the Aston Villa boss faces competition from Birmingham for McGeady and Manchester United and Everton for Ireland.

And Mick McCarthy's Wolves side are preparing to break their strict wage-budget to try and bring Keane back to his first club.

However, Keane's next destination is almost certainly going to be Villa, who made a belated move for the Irish skipper in the January transfer window but Keane had already committed his short-term future to Tottenham.

And despite Harry Redknapp's claims that Keane still has a future at White Hart Lane, the reality is Spurs will offload him if they receive a bid in excess of £10million.

O'Neill also has his sights on Doyle, McGeady and Ireland - but his pursuit of that trio comes with terms and conditions attached.

He will only move for Ireland if James Milner is tempted by a move to one of the big five - although a possible swap deal with Manchester City is on the cards.

Secondly, getting Doyle out of Wolves will be a tall order as the ex-Reading striker has built up a close relationship with McCarthy.

McGeady, however, is on his radar but again O'Neill is treading carefully on this subject because of his close friendship with Celtic owner, Dermot Desmond.

from NOTW

With the exception of Doyle, I can see benefits for all those players, even if they wouldn't be my first choices!

Mine neither. All look like typical MON signings. Ireland apart, I can't see any of the top 7 being interested in any of them. May be good enough to keep us in the top 7 but I'd imagine we'll have to compete with Newcastle to sign them.

I'm hearing far too much about Doyle and it's quite concerning.

Or to give an alternative view point:

Yessssssssss!

I'd happily take those 4 as a package.

I would also.

McGeady can offer cover for Young and Downing.

Ireland is quality.

Keane/Doyle will offer us more than Heskey.

Not "enough" more, though.

Doyle has done nothing to suggest he can be relied on to deliver goals at the highest level - and that goal delivery is the one thing we need above all else.

Keane has, but his time has been and gone.

Ireland would be a good signing, but McGeady - from what I have seen of him - looks like this year's Maloney, and I suspect we've got enough wide players as it is.

That's a 1/4 from me, with the Doyle link being the most worrying.

Precisely.
Keane would be alright but we can do better in long term thinking. Ireland would do us nicely but McGeady doesnt impress me. Doyle is not a step up from Heskey at all.

I think we need a higher benchmark than that. There will be Division 2 strikers who can do that.

I was quite concerned to see that Bullard will be sold by Hull to cut wages.

A typical MON signing if ever I've seen one...

I'd be more inclined to favour a move for Berbatov now. Failing that, could there be potential in a bid for Anelka?

Bent and Defoe would be far too expensive, but if we're looking to pay those figures then Berbatov or Anelka would prove to be better value for money and better quality.

I hope we don't try for Doyle (he's not very good, not what we need and would be over priced) and Cole is simply a younger version of Heskey (which is worrying given MONs liking of such players).

Said this before...

Don't want him but he could do a job as back up for Petrov and would be a good value at £2-3m. Wasn't so long ago that he was being touted for England.

Two top quality additions needed this summer.

Ireland might fall into that category, not sure about the others. In fact I'm pretty certain they don't.

Would take Doyle as an upgrade on Heskey though, he has scored goals when he's played in a front two at Reading before, But the attritional way the tatters play doesn't give a lone forward that many scoring options TBF. If they were asking crazy money they can get facked though.

Wolves signed Doyle for £6.5m so doubt they'd let him go for less than £10m, and they'd be stupid to do so. For a few million more we could get a much better player in Berbatov (I don't really rate him but he could add a lot to our team and feel he's not played to his best at Utd for several reasons ).

According to whom what? If you're referring to Berbatov I think Man Utd would consider cutting their losses with offers of approx £15m. This is based on comments made by SAF and reports that they want to get rid. I wouldn't be happy to pay much more than that for him.

Can't see West Ham selling Cole now they are in PL next season, and surely they'd want more than £10m. I hope MON isn't interested but would be a typical MON signing.

I'd pay anything less than £20m for Berbatov without blinking. He may not have had the ideal time at Utd but he's still class and the sort of creative striker we could do with at times.

Aston Villa are interested in West Ham striker Carlton Cole.

The England international, 26, has been one of the few shining lights for West Ham in their troubled season and his sale would upset supporters. However, Villa are ready to test West Ham’s resolve in the summer with a bid of around £10m.

Manager Martin O’Neill is keen to keep strengthening his side with young talent but, with question marks over his transfer budget, he has admitted certain players may have to be sacrificed for the long-term benefit of the club.

That leaves question marks over John Carew, Emile Heskey and Ashley Young who are all attracting interest from other clubs.

O’Neill would prefer to keep his squad intact but needs funds to bring in the players he wants in midfield and defence.

Villa are also monitoring Manchester City’s Stephen Ireland and Barcelona’s Alexander Hleb who is interesting Sunderland.
