If we ever get to the stage of regularly playing CL football and getting to the latter stages then, yes, I concede we might need to improve on a player like Bent.

But in 2010 Darren Bent is more than good enough for Aston Villa, and would score more goals than our current strikers.

They've got Campbell and Jones and we'd give them Heskey, plus whatever unknown geezer from The Republic of Randomguay that Bruce has picked up with the money.
I cant seem them going for Fonz too and I cant see MON letting him go. He'll play a fair bit more next season I reckon.

That's what I meant. I'd expect Bruce to dig his heels in and Sunderland to want silly money.

Like Maz said, maybe player exchange is an option.

I don't think Jones and Heskey could play together and they've been using Campbell wide, although he might naturally move upfront should Bent go.  The Fonz would get more games there than here in 2010/2011, so it may work in our favour?

I'f they'd take a mix of our reserves I'd obviously prefer that!

I really can't understand why people don't want Bent. I was rattling on about us signing him last season as well.

He scores goals and lot's of them and that is exactly what we need in a striker.

He's good at what he does but what he does is very limited.

He's a a score one miss three sort of striker and the rest of his game is not up to scratch, in tight games where you don't get many chances that's not enough.

I really struggle with this Chris. He ie more prolific than any of our strikers but somehow isn't good enough.

The manager has been here nigh on four years now so we know what his transfer methods will be come the summer.

As we will almost certainly be shopping in the domestic market then he is the most prolific goalscorer of those players that appear "gettable".

He has scored everywhere he has been, is quick, decent in air and a bit of a poacher which is something we simply don't have at the minute.

I think ideally Fonz would have some loan time under his belt, it's helped in the development of most top players.  It would be different if we were mid table but we are pushing at the top end these days so we can't give starts to these guys until they really are ripping up trees elsewhere imo.

If the money is there I don't think M'ON would worry about paying more for him than he could have done last summer.  We should have signed L Young for 2.5 mill when he went to Boro but M'ON wanted to look at him for 1 more yr before signing him for 6 mill.  Perhaps it's the same with Bent, maybe now he's sure he's the one he wants.  M'ON has never spent big on a striker and probably feels he must buy the right one, hence taking his time over it.  This summer must be the time when Villa buy that important striker to really push us on.

We missed our chance on Bent last summer, given the season he's just had Sunderland could quite easily demand 20 + M for him.

I think we'll be in for Cole or Bent...I'd much prefer Bent.
