That's one way of putting it. Another way of putting it is that both Spurs and England are trying to get to the highest level of football competition (though England are rather closer than Spurs), and that Bent's lack of those technical skills holds him and therefore whatever team he's playing for back at the highest level. As we want to be competing at the top, we have to play a more patient, technical style (which I believe we will), and thus Bent would not fit in with us as he's frankly consistently found wanting at the top level.

I've got to say I agree with you!

We need to develop our play and therefore need a striker that can offer something our present bunch can't.  I don't think Bent is that striker, even though he IS a better PL goal scorer than we have.  So we'd score more and be a better side for it, but I don't think he's the player to make a difference in the tight games.  I don't think I'm explaining myself all that well, but I think it's a case of us being a better version of our current side with him in it, as opposed to another striker who could be the start of turning us into a DIFFERENT version of our current side, which is what I think we need.

However, I wouldn't argue if we did sign him and think some of the criticism he's getting on here is unjustified!

Bent scored 17 goals in his final season at Spurs, mostly off the bench, that's more than either Gabby or Carew have managed for us in the past 4 seasons.

I'd take young Wickham off Ipswich, he looks like he will be top class.

Now, Jermain Defoe is a good striker but I'd choose Darren Bent over him every time. I've also been saying that for years.

Harry Redknapp and Fabio Capello would disagree with that.

(Okay, Redknapp's not a great example, but it's hard to argue with Big Don Capello on issues like this.)

I think Bent is suited to a club side that get the ball forward quickly and, as I said before, play to his strengths.  With England he needs to fit in around a lot of quite frankly better players and play to their strengths, which he probably can't do, and it's a more patient technical approach.

So I agree with Capello not picking him, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't be a good player for us!

I've heard you argue this before Monty and I'm sorry but I think its over complicating the matter somewhat. Bent scores goals. Its as simple as that. I'm not at all tactically naive. You can afford to have one player who's job it is to score goals and very little else.
He's not exactly hopeless at linking play in any case.

At Charlton he often played up front on his own and had to link up with the midfield. He still scored heavily, even though they were mostly crap.
At Spurs his record was good, and they play in a totally different way. At Sunderland his record is amazing and they play in a different way again. What's the common denominator? The player himself. He scores goals everywhere he goes. Lots of them. You can think about tactics all you like. The aim is simple and true for everybody. Get the ball in the box and score and stop the other team scoring. Yes there are tactical nuances too and how you go about it, but essentially that's it

Now I accept that international football might not be for him, but Aston Villa play in the Premier League and in the Premier League, Bent scores lots and lots of goals. He would have scored just as many if not more, at Villa and we'd be easily top 4. That's my opinion.

I'd love to us bring in both Bent and Crouch, keep Carew. With these and Gabby this would look bloody strong.

Forget Crouch and bring in Delfouneso.

Bent, Carew, Gabby, Delfouneso would be a brilliant set of strikers.

The latter three and any really good striker would be smashing though.

I really can't understand why people don't want Bent. I was rattling on about us signing him last season as well.

He scores goals and lot's of them and that is exactly what we need in a striker.

He's a really good young player and I have loved to have got him here. But Chelsea have so many ageing players that they'll hang on to any of their best youngsters.

I don't think Sturridge would offer us anything Delfouneso won't next year.

Don't want Bent, as good as he's been this season I think he's a limited player and you've got to play a certain way to get the best out of him.

He's better than Gabby, but I don't think clipping the ball into space for Bent to run on to will get us into the top 4 consistantly.

I want a striker who offers us something different. Berbatov would be the dream striker for me, another option from the Premier League would be Keane but not sure if he'd be worth the money/wages.
