Whatever the players I think if you play both Young & Downing out wide then you can only play one up front as the midfield will get overrun by the better teams.

You could then play Milner and Ireland with the holding player behind.  Without the need for the running Petrov would be fine in that role for the moment.

If you want a reasonably priced option for the holding role then one from Scott Parker or Danny Murphy might do the trick.  I'd want someone there who is prepared to pick up the ball from the back four and use it.  Carrick might be available but wouldn't be reasonably priced.

To be fair to Young, for a winger he doesn't half track back and protect his full back. But yes, there will be times we have to be flexible with our formation and play three in the middle.

Dorans will probably be signed next summer after the bagies go down. He will definetely stick with Baggies in the first season back in the Prem .

Dorrans looks very good, but I'd wait to see if he shines in a shite side in the Premier League.

I mean, even Kevin Nolan looks a class act in the CCC.

But if you wait for that his value could triple at least...dont know much about him but if he was available at a reasonable price, why not?

Priority HAS TO BE  to get a proven striker with a goal every other game ratio or better. If we had one of those this season, I think we would nearly have 4th sewn up by now.

Every other game?

So that'll be Torres, Drogba and Rooney then.

Any of them will do.

Was thinking more on the lines of Bent or Defoe (even though I cant see us getting them now). Or someone in Europe who can bang em in.

Right guys first time poster long time watcher/reader/stalker delete as you wish.
Just to throw a couple of names into the ring:
nathanial clyne (sp?) from palace he looks quality and is still very young and what about mark noble from the spammers another hard working young midfielder who with Parker suspended is doing his job as well as he is but again is young has ambition and surely doesn't want to be fighting relegation every season.

Or Darren Bent, whose record at Sunderland is far in excess of one every other game.

Yep. Good one. Very good against us in the FA Cup at their place, when he man-marked Ash. Think he can play right back and left back. He'd be on my shortlist too.

Yes to Clyne and Noble, the latter has always impressed me.  Noble in with Petrov and Milner would be a nice blend in midfield for me, we should be able to retain the ball better that way as well.  Takes a good pen too.

Darren Bent would cost too much now unfortunately. If it was anything less than £20m though, and we could afford it, I'd pay it.

He's as near a guarantee of 20 goals a season as we could realistically get. It would have to be some special kind of deal to get Sunderland to agree though. Maybe if we palmed Shorey, Beye, Heskey and Sidwell off to them plus cash, Bruce might be interested. It depends how much he's got to spend.

That has to be the best quote ever. Other than the fact that he can't run, he's great. That made me laugh.

It makes you wonder what might have been had we bought him last summer.

He seems happy at Sunderland, but I would like to think we would have appealed to him more than going up there.

Nail on head Steve. We criticise the midfield pair for getting overrun but the reason lies with the width of our wingers. I think we looked a better team with Reo-Coker out on the right, as the Bremner-esque 'chugger', doing solid work and joing the midfield two when Ash is attacking/been tackled.

Anyway, Parker, two centre forwards (one finished article and one to take a chance on)and a promising young left back and we'd be not that far off.
