People making right back jokes or claiming we usually sign the shittest players should be banned immediately and permanently.

Sorry, but its true.

For the record, that IMO, this will be Bent's one and only good season, and I bet Brucey knows this, and will try to sell him to someone needing a striker and who has a fair few quid......

yeah.

One and only good season? He is consistently one of the top scorers in the league. Dont let his bench time at Spurs fool you. I would choose him over Defoe every day of the week.

My biggest criticism of O'Neill is that he didn't sign him.

Any two from

*Axel Witsel at Liege. We need more height, strength and a bit of nastiness in the middle of the park. He would bring all three. Could be Petrov's replacement in time.

*Stephen Ireland. Oddball, but can open teams up with one pass. Decent work ethic and busy all over the pitch, terms not readily associated with most 'luxury' players. A more settled club enviroment might bring out the very best in him again, as per Dunne. Criminally under used at the moment.

*Fernando Llorente at Bilbao. 18 goals last season and he's close to matching that again this year. 6ft 4, holds the ball up well and decent enough technique. If we jettison one of Heskey or Carew he'd been an ideal replacement.

That said, if we do stick to the home-based market I wouldn't be distraught with Rodallega, Fletcher or Doyle. All have different strengths and have enough raw materials to improve upon. I'm sure there would be plenty of wailing or gnashing of teeth on here if any were linked, but that has happened with a number of players we've signed previously. Players who have gone on to do very good jobs for us.

We will also need to look at the rightback situation, as for whatever reason O'Neill just doesn't seem comfortable with Luke Young there. With the teams emphasis on set pieces, any fullback will need to be (a) good in the air in both penalty areas, so ideally 6ft + (b) solid defensively and (c) have better pace and distribution than Cuellar. Can't think of too many of those off the top of my head.

GK: Joe Hart
MID: Jamie O'Hara
FWD: Klaas-Jan Huntelaar
FWD: Nicklas Bendtner

You say realistic, but your list is  mainly fantasy football, Huntelaar and Bedtner would not give up Champions League football to come to us, you also forget that Huntelaar plays in a foreign League and is therfore out of bounds to MON.

Hart will probably go back to Man City and O'Hara? - No thanks.

I've been amazed at some of the names mentioned on here, you'd better start aiming your sights a little lower as you're in dreamland if you think we'll be signing the likes of Joe Cole.

The transfer budget will not be that high.

Please read the initial post again. The players I listed are names that have been thrown around on here not my personal opinion, however if we are to push on (particularly in Europe) then these are the calibre of players that we need to strengthen the team and the squad.

If I was being unrealistic then I'd be saying David Villa, Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres, but players such as O'Hara and Hart who cant get a game for their team and have been put out on loan should be realistic targets for Villa; Huntelaar is playing in a poor Milan side and obviously unproven in the PL; Bendtner is a player I think MON would be interested in but has obvious question marks over his consistency and attitude.

As also stated in the first post, I'm sure our final league position this season will also have a bearing on the transfer budget available and the calibre of player we can realistic target.

In addition to a quality midfield player, the main area that needs to addressed is finding a prolific goal scoring forward, but as we all know, they are hard to find and dont come cheap.

I think the big clubs have started sniffing around but I reckon Sporting's Moutinho would be brilliant for us.

Cast your minds back to Litex in the uefa cup last year (I know we didn't field the strongest team) I thought Tom their play maker was pretty good.

Hmm... I'm going to try to be realistic here.

Ins

Back Up Right back- Nathaniel Clyne (£1million should secure)
Defensive Midfielder- Petrov isn't getting any younger. We need a new defensive player to gradually ease him out. Mohammed Diame might be a good choice... They might want around £10million for him.

Creative Midfielder- We have Milner but we need some back up. We are linked with Graham Dorrans and he can provide that £5-6million.

Striker- The most necessary player on the list but also the most difficult one too find. We probably need two. A poacher type; Darren Bent would be ideal it's just that he is not available unless Sunderland go down. We also need another big guy to play up front Bendtner is a good but over ambitious shout.

Outs
Habib Beye- £1million
Nicky Shorey £2million
Steve Sidwell £3million
Nigel Reo Coker £4million
John Carew £4million

I think the Villa should sign me. Good at right back, sexual and very strong, I could certainly help fill a gap. If they're not interesting in me, how about the following eleven:

1. Mazrim - good in goal
2. Tony Knowles - good at snooker
3. The Pet Shop Boys - good at standing still
4. Dave Woodhall - good at books and stuff
5. Penny Lane - good at song titles
6. Perry Barr - good at Birmingham
7. Perry Como - good at cardigans
8. Perrier - good at fizzy water
9. Zoe Ball - good at being tall
10. Brian Small - good in the past
11. Michael J. Fox - good in the future

If cuellar is seen as MON's right back template then an improved version could be Micah Richards.  I think he's a pretty woeful centre back but a good right back, yet he has the physique of a CB (plus pace).

No idea how valued he is at Man City though and have seen valuations between £2.5m and £25m for him over the past couple of years.

Don't understand people mentioning Jamie O'Hara. I'd like to think we'd aim a bit higher than a Spurs reject who's not actually that good.

Would disagree with that. He looks very decent in a poor Portsmouth side, always busy and looking for the ball, loves to drive forward and not afraid to get a dig in on goal. I think with better players around him he would be a very very good player who could keep improving.

Thats what i love about this forum, someone has 1 good game and all of a sudden he's on peoples wish list. I am of course talking about Bendtner. The bloke is woeful most of the time. And if we need one thing up front, it's someone consistant.
On the other hand, 2 of the other suggestions were exactly 2 players i'd been thinking would be good additions recently, as they have be very impressive every time i've seen them this season, O' Hara and Hart.
Kevin Doyle would be my striker selection.

Those 3 are all realistic and would see us improve a bit, but to improve significantly we need as close to world class as we can get.

I don't see O'Hara and Doyle improving us at all, they are not as good as our first choice players in those positions and I don't think they are any better than our back ups, Carew, Delph etc.

Whoever we buy, this summer will be a seller's market.  The World Cup will inflate prices at the top end, as those playing will all of sudden be the names on everyone's lips (you wait: come June there'll be all on sundry on here saying we should be go for player X on the strength of, for example, scoring a hat-trick in the game between Paraguay and Slovakia).

Inevitably, if the price for World Cup participants goes up, then there will be a similar inflation across the board and at all levels.

With equal inevitability, whoever buys the owner of the Paraguay-Slovakia match-ball, will discover come November that they've bought a pig-in-a-poke.

With this in mind, whoever we go for needs to have been identified on how they've performed over a period of time, preferably in the PL, and the deal done as soon as the window opens.

What we need is, in order or priority, a guaranteed 20+ goal per season striker, a creative midfield ball winner to be the long-term Petrov replacement and another back-up goalkeeper.
