In my opinion, the only significance with selling Milner is that we'll have a massive cash injection but will also have to replace him. I think spending potential could different, increased but I really cant see spending being dependent upon getting money for Milner. Why would it?
There's a very wealthy man in charge who has shown to spend money year on year and we have considerable sponsorship money coming in now too.
And though our wage bill is high we 've probably made a fair of money last season too. Extended cup runs and increased prize money.

It may be moms style but it's not a good policy , players should have a pre season with a new club and get used to their new teammates rather than arriving after the season starts, I understand fans frustrations totally and it does nothing to enhance ticket sales either.

How long is milner on holiday?cole and gerrard are back at Liverpool and this needs sorting out with a clear decision- he stays or goes but let's get on with things!

This penny pinching and dithering is the reason why we are falling behind our competitors , for god sake let's show some ambition and end the constant silence around the club.

I am beginning to get the feeling maybe randy is losing interest and feels he's taken us as far as he can and mon maybe feels the same way- I hope I'm wrong!

To be honest holidays don't come into it. A player will be more than pleased to conclude a deal whilst on holiday and let his agent deal with the paperwork. cole for example, met Liverpool while he was on his holiday

Milner is back in training on Monday.

Cole was out of contract so it was just up to him whe he signed for. Man City have to make a bid that we accept before anything can happen. The reason there has been no progress is because they haven't done that, nothing to do with us and nothing to do with the player.

I've never bought into the "sell to buy" thing, but I am increasingly starting to worry Mr Woodhall is right and, in fact, we really do need the Milner money to go out and start signing.

I don't think it's a case of needing the money, as it is that our plans will change if Milner goes.  For example:-
1.  Keane at around £8m is a likely deal, but maybe we'd use a chunk of the Milner money, should that deal happen, to go for a more expensive target, such as Huntelaar?
2.  Although I'd put a striker as top priority right now, if Milner goes we'd be very light in midfield (Delph injured, Sidwell and maybe NRC going, Petrov getting older), so I think I'd switch priorities to a midfielder as we'd be better off upfront than there with Gabby, Carew and the Fonz.

I just think we're in a state of limbo until it's decided one way or another!

yep i agree with that, but if they had agreed a deal, milner being on holiday wouldn't have slowed the deal up

True maz, he has spent a lot of money but we are no closer now than we were 3 yrs ago , especially now with what's being spent at city and maybe randy is beginning to think we need to spend £30m just to stay where we are, is it worth it?

Like I say , I hope I'm wrong but there doesn't seem any spark about the place ahead of this season, it all feels flat.

Not to me. I'm looking forward to the new season as usual and I know we'll get players in. It doesnt concern me at all. Certainly not in mid/late July when we've played one friendly and some players still on holiday.

At worst we're standing our ground.  Last season Man City and Spurs moved ahead of us, but Everton and Liverpool moved behind us.  This season we'll have to wait and see!

We are falling behind city and spurs and they are both going to spend far more than us again this summer, Liverpool will be stronger without benitez and everton will be stronger without the chronic injuries.

I think we all know who the top 8 will be but I fear 7th could be our lot unless things change in the next few weeks , if he's after keane or Ireland then let's get them, they are both available or are we really that skint?

This is the time to bring new players in so they can get used to our system and their new teammates , not the end of august.

I do feel like the 'we have no money' angle is being completely overplayed. It's an offhand comment about living within the club's means made by the manager that has been turned into gospel truth by every media outlet.

MON has spent a lot, yes. However, he's certainly not torn the bottom out of Lerner's wallet with the signings he's made - no more than Everton have done to Kenwright or Spurs have with Levy, anyway - and it doesn't make sense for Lerner to only have the funds available for the first four years of his ownership and none for the later years. Players were being signed for £15 million in the Premier League 11 years before he turned up so it's not as if he was unaware that football takes a hell of a massive pile of cash to fund.

I have no idea what's going on in terms of signings but I refuse to believe that the club haven't got two pennies to rub together just because O'Neill has paid over the odds for a few players in the last four years.

Having reluctantly been introduced to the delights of selling stuff on ebay, i know how Daniel Levy is feeling as he turns down another 5m bid for Keane from Villa.  7 hours to go and i'm still waiting for the MON's of my bidders to firm up their interest :o{

I think we have to draw a line and say if it still is unresolved past that date, then we go ahead anyway as if he's staying.  If something then happens later on you deal with it, even if that means putting the money in the bank and spending it in January or next summer.  However, if he's back on Monday you would expect the picture to be a lot clearer by this time next week.

It is starting to get annoying though. Im startin to think he's only got a couple of targets and needs the Milner money for both! Im thinking Ireland & Keane at the min
