Like Risso as someone in middle age just the other side of 50 I started doing Couch to 5k on 1 Jan.  After 3 months of solid slog did a 5k in 26:35 yesterday. Quite chuffed and I’m amazed at the change in my outlook and general state of mind. I’ve never been the greatest of Runners/joggers, I prefer biking, but really enjoying it. Next challenge is to try and get to 25:00 and carry on the gradual weight loss.

Oh and well done Risso.

Being of an age where I started going down the Villa in 1972, never being able to run (except in short bursts away from West Ham and Bristol City fans), smoking until 3 years ago, eating/drinking far too much, I started jogging at the beginning of the lockdown - I managed to jog/walk my first couple of 5km last week. I’m trying to get inside 30 mins which I will see as a massive personal achievement ... I satisfy myself by knowing I can jog 5km quicker than I can swim 2km ... which cheered me up.

The 30 minute mark was a big one for me.  I think I'm fit enough to go faster, but if try to push it much more than that, my shins, knees and ankles all start hurting.  Maybe once I've lost another stone in weight it'll be easier.  Down from 17'10 in the New Year, to 14'11 now.  I ordered one of the 'pro' Villa kits in the sale, and I surprised myself by firstly getting into it, and secondly not looking like a total bag of spuds.  A way to go before matching Tyrone's physique, but all heading in the right direction!

Some inspirational stories on here. Keep it up guys.

I did my first run yesterday for three weeks (had a pulled achilles). I thought I would take it easy, but felt good so stretched out a bit and ended up running 14km. Will leave a few daysbefore the next run as was out out my bike this morning and my thighs were burning.

Good improvement Risso. That weight loss is impressive.

I used to run marathons and ultra marathons for quite a few years, so it's in the blood. Can't run that far anymore, due to old age and worn out joints.

It seems obvious, but if you’re going for a 5K pb always look for a flat route. It makes a huge difference. All of my runs now are reasonably hilly, so I never get near my best. My pb on flat is 23.31, I reckon I average about 27-28 on my current routes. It’s a huge variation and even running downhill is hard work.

I’m impressed Risso. I am awestruck by most on this thread. I couldn’t run 3.5km in 24 minutes let alone 5! I am the fat boy at the back who’s PE kit is borrowed from the box of left overs in the corner.

I really, really really hate running. I was never any good. However with not being able to get to the gym or pool and living near canals and rivers I thought I would have a go. I run at less sociable times in order not to frighten the dogs horses and children ...

However reading through this thread does give me some hope that one day I might come to tolerate it, before I slink back to the pool after all this is over.

I do enjoy the music though and use that as my excuse to go. A bit of Gansta Rap, AC/DC or 90’s trash keeps me going a little longer.

Ha ha I seem to have hit a plateau anyway as my fast 5k run last week was only just under that at 28:40. However I’m due to do a duathlon in October so have now interspersed the running with trying to get my bike miles up! To say it’s been a shock to the system doing run one day and bike the next for the last couple of weeks would be an understatement, I feel very heavy legged and it’s obviously having an impact going into a heavy load of mixed event training. Still did my long run at 11.8k this morning and felt good so it’s all heading in the right direction.

And agree on the flat course for a fast time, my current 5k course only undulates by 4m max up or down from start to finish.

Good luck all.

As everyone always says to me when I do this, always the lower back, Yoga and Core Strength exercises.

Hope it’s better soon.

I think whichever direction I head out of my front door, I'll have done more than that within 2 minutes!

Very sad news about Neil Black , former UK Athletics Performance Director, dead at the ridiculously young age of 60. I remember him as a very talented athlete at Cross Country/ road/ 1500 m track for Morpeth Athletics Club. He was in the same year group as me but was one of the ‘gods’ who was competing for National titles, whereas I was just was just a County hack who saw his back disappearing into the distance after the first lap. Top athlete but more importantly a top bloke, a real gentleman.
Life seems a real shit these days.

So with April nearly done it was time for a quick 5k blast this morning. 25:12!! Felt fucking amazing whilst running from 1k to 4K though the less said about the last 1k the better. Time to reflect on achievements so far and set up a programme to work towards the Duathlon in October. Seen some good stuff online and I need to stop pissing about and put some bric training and strength training into the schedule. Onwards.....

Working from home since pre lockdown the one thing I have been able to is run more. Done very little thia year as lost my Mom amd work relentless.

Clocked up 33km, 44km, 41km and 47km in the last 4 weeks 3-4 runs per week. Felt great for it too.
