How is he viewed by the American public by and large? Hero or cheat?
In the Bay Area he's a hero, but in the rest of the country I'd say he's a villain.
The bad feeling towards Bonds isn't just because of the steroid use (he's admitted to "unknowingly" taking them), its also because he appears to be an arrogant, obnoxious, rude and downright unlikeable person.
