My late friend Red had a joke where the punchline was "Mickey's dead ?!?".

I can't remember the joke, but it wasn't that funny and I never really understood it, despite hearing it many times.

Clicked on unread for this topic and it reverted me back to this post. Apologies for resurrecting but it reminded me of something I heard on a podcast about some other similar deal which ended up as Bobby Bonilla day.

Tbe Bonilla deal was bonkers, we won't pay you the $6m we owe you now, instead we'll spend 20 odd years paying you $30m.

Bonilla still has another decade of received $1.19m from the Mets every 1st Jul.

In 2000, the Mets agreed to buy out the remaining $5.9 million on Bonilla's contract.

However, instead of paying Bonilla the $5.9 million at the time, the Mets agreed to make annual payments of nearly $1.2 million for 25 years starting July 1, 2011, including a negotiated 8% interest.

At the time, Mets ownership was invested in a Bernie Madoff account that promised double-digit returns, and the Mets were poised to make a significant profit if the Madoff account delivered -- but that did not work out.

I'd forgotten about the Madoff connection.

BTW - The Mets also owe Bret Saberhagen $250k per year until 2029, from a 2004 agreement which was the inspiration for Bonilla's deal.
