Welcome SirSteve. Great to have another Sox fan on here.
The three Milnor League parks that I went to on this trip were those of the "Fort Myers Miracle", "Clearwater Threshers" and "Port Charlotte Stone Crabs".
The latter was for the Florida State League All Star Game. The game itself was good but the pre-game activities, including a Home Run Derby, dragged on a bit.
They did a "Shirts of their back" silent auction for charity. A lot of the winning bidders for the shirts were the players' parents. Apparently the players are only given one shirt for the game**, which then gets auctioned off. Therefore, a young player (maybe in their first pro season) doesn't get to keep their All Star jersey unless someone bids on it for them. One players' uncle had to bid $350 in order to secure his nephews' shirt.
I was the winning bidder for the shirt of coach Desi Wilson (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desi_Wilson). I did this because he's a big guy (so there's a chance that the jersey will fit me), the shirt would be less sweaty than a player's and I wouldn't be blocking a parent from getting their kids' shirt.
Also, it only cost me $80 for a genuine one-off game used jersey, which is around half of what a replica jersey would have cost if they were selling them (which they weren't)
Now sat in Tampa airport waiting for my flight back to Heathrow (via Toronto)
** the game organised by a team owned by Cal Ripken. Apparently he is notoriously tight with money when it comes to providing gear to players and staff.
