Do we have any Chicago Cubs fans ?

If so, my commiserations, you team stinks....... stinks !!

I was at their 14 - 3 demolition by Cincinnati yesterday. The Reds hit 9 home runs !

Yep, I'm one of them - I'm hoping they'll dump some payroll and go with some younger guys who are hungry. I'm also still hoping for a late run as anything goes in the NL Central! :) Good to see the Reds competing again though.

so, I have a work trip to Boston next week and they sent us the agenda.  I finally read it and saw this:

"Please note that on Tuesday, July 20 we have planned an exciting off site dinner event at Fenway Park.  Be sure to bring your camera as you will have the opportunity to meet some Major League Baseball Legends and also explore Fenway Park!"

It's like a double edged sword.  As a baseball fan, part of me is excited.

But the thought of meeting a "former great redsox" makes me sick to my stomach and my soul...

C'mon, if I can visit the Death Star (and deal with the dodgy characters found in nearby bars), you can face Fenway !!

yeah, I have to admit, those guys you met there sucked...

No seriously, they did.

But as for Fenway, I am kind of excited.  I actually got tickets to Sporting/Celtic to be played at Fenway the next night too, which I am more excited about.

I will take my camera to Fenway for you and post it up on my Facebook.
If I can get a picture of Wade Boggs on a horse, I will tag you in it.

(oooops wrong Boggs team)

NEW YORK (AP) -- A person close to George Steinbrenner tells The Associated Press that the New York Yankees' owner died Tuesday morning.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet made the announcement.

EDIT - Steinbrenner family have now confirmed George's death

RIP George Steinbrenner

The radio over here has been 24-7 George.  People calling up with their favorite George stories.  The guy was a hard person to work for, mainly because he only cared about winning.  The thing is, this WIN no matter what attitude wasn't for personal gain, it was really for the fans.  He just wanted people to like him.

My favorite George stories I have heard on the radio in the last 24 hours.

The Yankees are boarding a plane to Cleveland for a series with the Indians.  Someone notices that there is a man and two young boys all decked out in yankees gear on the plane.  One of the players asks the PR director who it is, because families weren't allowed to travel with the team.  The PR director just says "I was told they are friends of George".  Turns out that George read a story in the newspaper about a woman who died leaving her husband and two kids.  The article was about how she had a horrible accident etc...  Well George bought them out for a weekend as a chance to get away for a while.

Story #2

George used to drive around the stadium when he was in NY during off hours because he was a little "neurotic" at times, and liked for things to be perfect.  Well He sees a kid spray painting on a building.  He pulls up quietly, sneeks up behind the kid, grabs his arm, and asks him what he doing.  The kid is like 12 or so.

Instead of calling the police, he takes the kid inside, gets him a job as a bat boy.  When he is 16 he makes sure the same kid gets a job on the field crew.  Every time this kid earns a new position, George makes sure he gets it.  The kid is now 35 and still works for the yankees and credits George for changing his life.

Story #3

George used to read the newspaper and hear about people dying and how the family didn't have money to bury them and would send a letter saying "it's all taken care of", and it would be.

But he was HARD to work for.  He expected the best.

He once saw a vendor walk by with pretzels, grabbed one of the cart and screamed at the guy "YOU CALL THIS FRESH!?!?! THIS ISN'T EVEN HOT!!! YOU EXPECT MY YANKEE FANS TO BE HAPPY PAYING FOR THIS!?!?!?"

The best quote he ever had was: "I'm George Steinbrenner... I will never have a heart attack, I cause them"

It'll be "Good George" stories for a while but I suspect that the "Bad George" stories will be with us soon.

By the way, Tony Kornheiser did a great George summary at the start of his radio show yesterday

George bit starts at 04:55 into the show

Da Beeb actually mentioned George's death in the 06:30 sports report this morning.

However, they also said that the NL beat the AL in the All Star Game; "the traditional curtain raiser for the season".

That'll be the season that's already half over ! (head slappy emoticon)
