Daily Mail - Twitter Clamp Down

Quote
Twitter has decided to act after Tony La Russa, the coach of an obscure American baseball team, launched a legal action over a fake account. He claimed that postings in which he appeared to make light of the death of two of his players had been ‘hurtful’.

That "obscure baseball team" will be your 10 time World Series champion St Louis Cardinals.

I can't remember... did I ever get round to picking a team to support?

I want a team that's not particularly fashionable but still not complete shite and has a long and proud history, a bit like Da Bears and Villa. Preferably it should be one that hasn't relocated 75 times.

Any ideas?

Just reading above, about Pittsburgh's lengthy bad run of form. Does baseball have a draft and salary cap to try to prevent the same teams winning / losing every year?

Up until  a few years ago the Red Sox were the team I figured were most like Villa. I suppose you could go for the Cubbies. for the past 90 odd years they make small heath look successful!

I don't want somebody completely rubbish though! The Red Sox seem a bit to successful and popular for my liking.

I'm quite tempted by the Brewers cos their name makes me think of beer. Are they any good?

There's a draft system that means that "theoretically" the best young players should go to the worst teams. However, unlike in the NFL, it could be several years before such players are ready for the Major Leagues.

There's no salary cap as such but there is a "revenue sharing" scheme which means that small-market teams (ie with less TV and advertising revenue) get money from a central pot to add to their salary budget.

However, in the case of the Pirates.....

1) They're absolutely shit at identifying good young players
2) They received $40m in "revenue sharing" this season but spent only $20m on players salaries.

Although the Pirates have a 17 season losing streak, they're way behind the Philadelphia Phillies in terms of futility.

The Phillies snuck over .500 in 1932 (78 wins & 76 losses). However, surrounding that year they had 30 consecutive losing seasons !!

The Brewers are reasonably good (in fact very good last year), with a great ballpark and fans (one of my best friends is a season ticket holder).

They also have the greatest baseball broadcaster of them all

But you wan't a team that is in a city you would actually want to visit and maybe catch a game.

Eliminating the Yankees and Redsox as too popular, and eliminating the Dodgers and Giants as teams that moved (although they aren't moving again), you have few choices.

I would consider:

The Angels
The Mets
The Cubs
The White Sox

That was over 50 years ago. Does anyone really care anymore that they originated in Brooklyn and New York ?

For new supporters the Arizona Diamondbacks are a possibility or how about the St Louis Cardinals ?

After extensive research (ok two minutes Googling) I have decided on my team. They are old like Villa and come from a city I might actually one day visit (if I ever get any money). This is on the basis that my preferred NFL team plays in the same city so I can kill two birds with one stone.

My team is... Chicago White Sox.

So... are we any good?

I've thought of another baseball query. I understand teams play absolutely loads of matches, and for lots of consecutive days.

With the sheer size of America, don't they all get knackered with all that travelling? Do they arrange it so that teams play lots of home games in a row then lots of away games in similar places or are they expected to play in Chicago one day, LA the next, Tampa Bay the next? If so baseball must cause more ecological damage than China!

I believe their fans like to invade the field and attack umpires and players.
