Cheers folks, so it was pretty special then.

Has there ever been a game when both pitchers have pitched no-hitters? Or even come close?

IIRC it's nigh on impossible as the odds are high that if both pitched no hitters the score would be 0-0 after 9 innings and would go into extra innings, so it wouldn't qualify as a complete game as relief pitchers would appear at some stage. If that makes sense and I remember everything right. I'm sure there have been pitchers who pitched 9 hitless innings but don't have a no hitter given them as the score finished 0-0. I'm so glad I started trying to explain, i'm confusing myself now.

This is true, but there is always the slight possibility that this could happen (no hitter, not a perfect game) and the winning run could get walked in.

You may lose 1-0, but there was no H

I doubt it has ever happened though.

Also, if it is 9 innings in, and you haven't given up a hit yet, there is NO WAY anyone is taking you out of a game.

There have been a handful of instances of pitchers throwing a no-hitter and still ending up on the losing side.

Quote from: "Wikipedia"
No-hitters in a losing cause

Unlike a perfect game, in which no batters reach base, in regular no-hitters batters can reach base in other ways, such as a walk, an error, or a hit batsman. Thus it is possible to lose a no-hitter. On April 23, 1964, Ken Johnson of the Houston Colt .45s became the only pitcher to lose a complete game no-hitter in nine innings when he was beaten 1-0 by Cincinnati. The winning run was scored by Pete Rose in the top of the ninth inning via an error, groundout, and another error. In 1967, Steve Barber and Stu Miller of the Baltimore Orioles pitched a combined no-hitter, but lost 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers.

Because the home team does not bat in the ninth inning when it is already leading, a visiting pitcher (or pitchers) may complete a full game without allowing a hit but not be credited with an official no-hitter because they pitched only 8 innings. This happened most recently on June 28, 2008, when Jered Weaver and José Arredondo of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim threw 8 no-hit innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, but lost the game 1-0 and are not credited with a no-hitter. This is the first near no-hitter of this kind in which more than one pitcher was involved. Previously, Silver King (1890), Andy Hawkins (1990), and Matt Young (1992) pitched complete games without allowing a hit, but pitched only 8 innings as the losing pitcher from the visiting team, and thus are not credited with a no-hitter.

I remember watching Mike Mussina retire the first 26 Red Sox batters and was one strike away from a perfect game before a soft Carl Everett single ruined it. When Channel 5 showed the baseball I always used to set myself the task of staying awake while a perfect game was still a possibility and that was one of the few games I saw all the way through unless I didn't have to be at work the next day.

Details of all 18 Perfect Games

Another even rarer baseball event occurred yesterday, Josh Willingham of the Washington Natinals* hit two Grand Slams in one game. This was only the 13th time it had happened.

One piece of baseball video that I've never been able to track down is Fernando Tatis (then of the St Louis Cardinals) hitting two Grand Slams in the same inning of the same. I know that both were off the pitching of Chan Ho Park but don't let that lessen the achievement.

(* and yes, that's what I meant to type. pmarachi will know what I'm getting at)

Grand slam = home run with someone on all the bases right?

Wow, Buerhle nearly did it again. He retired the first 17 Twins batters he faced yesterday.

That make 45 consecutive outs and all time MLB record.

I have decided I'm an Orioles fan, 'cause we were in Maryland last year and my surname begins with an O'S and they are the O's.  Unfortunately we didn't get to go to a game while we were over, but hopefully next time.

I have, however, taken to switching over to espn america when there is nothing else on, although this could be frustration that nothing is happening on sky sports news that is of any interest.

Saw the match that Buerhle struck everyone out (or whatever the technical term is).  Very impressive.

You might regret becoming an O's fan.

They've got a great ballpark and I like Baltimore (as long as you stay away from "The Wire" areas !!) but they're in the same division as my Red Sox, pmarachi's Yankees and also the Rays.

Therefore in order for them to stand a chance of making the playoffs everything has to go right during a season.

With the emergence of Wieters, Jones and Markakis, there's a glimmer of hope but don't go holding your breath for a World Series.

The Yankees were actually the original Baltimore Orioles.

Orioles are a decent choice for the stadium alone.  I wouldn't worry about the Ray's long term, but it is rought to be in the same divison as the Yankees and Redsox, but if that's who you like, that's who you like.

They also have one of the best hat's I have ever seen.  The old 80's orioles hat is absolutely amazing!

I wish I could get one.

Before, pmarachi starts.............. yes, I know that Manny and Papi have just been named as having failed the 2003 drug tests.

However, I don't give a flying feck. After 80 odd years of waiting I don't care what it took to win the World Series

Here's some comments from Manny & Papi (courtesy of the great Olbermann's blog)

Quote
Ortiz - with some help in the phrasing, but this is doubtlessly him - issues a statement of confession:

"One, I have already contacted the Players Association to confirm if this report is true. I have just been told that the report is true. Based on the way I have lived my life, I am surprised to learn I tested positive. Two, I will find out what I tested positive for. And, three, based on whatever I learn, I will share this information with my club and the public. You know me -- I will not hide and I will not make excuses."

Meanwhile MLB.Com quotes Ramirez, before the Dodgers-Cards in St. Louis:

"If you guys want to talk about the game and what happens now, I can sit and talk for two hours. But something happened six years ago, I don't want to talk about that. If you want more information, you have the number for the union. Call them."

A slight difference in approach from the two people concerned
