I could be wrong but I thought it was called the World Series because at the start it was sponsored by a newspaper called The World.

Very interesting game between the Red Sox and Angels. Sox 6-4 up at the top of the 9th, Angels currently 7-6 up now with 2 outs :)

C'mon the Angels :)

That went very bad very quickly. MLB Gamecast is a very strange way to watch a game.

'World' Series! hahahahaha

:-)

Remember its called the "World" Series because Americans ARE that arrogant

so don't watch it.

I thought it had been cancelled this year.

I've just checked the Red Sox fixture for the rest of October and they don't appear to have any more games. Surely that can't be right !!

PS - luckily I've been away surfing for a few days and didn't see a minute of the ALDS debacle

I don't do ironic, I thought I read somewhere that was true but happy to stand corrected.

I have to go to Iceland from Thursday to Sunday.

I can't believe I am going to miss one, and maybe two of the ALCS games.

I also have to say that the TBS announcers were crap.
They made Joe Morgan and Joe Buck look good.  I have never heard anything so bad.

They literally knew NOTHING of the players on the field.

I heard this more than once:

"Former Yankee... Contreras at the plate..."

UMMMMMMMMM.... Worng Contreras jackass!

Somewhere along the way (the earliest citing I've found so far is from 1991), people have picked up the notion that the fall classic, baseball's World Series, is so named not because the victors are considered the world's champions, but because the contest was originally sponsored by the New York World newspaper. Perhaps this belief springs from today's hyper-commercial sporting climate, in which nearly all athletic championships and sports stadiums are named for corporate sponsors, or perhaps it springs from the incongruity of the winners of a contest featuring only teams from North America being declared "world champions," but so prevalent is this erroneous belief that it is now regularly cited as a "fact," despite a complete lack of any supporting evidence.

The New York World never had anything to do with the World Series, however, other than being one of the many newspapers to report the results.

A classic myth of the internet age.

No doubt when the 2009 "World Series" begins the Telegraph and BBC (two organisations who I've moaned at previously) will spout the same "myth" one more.

If the same announcers from the ALDS are calling the game, this will be the least of your worries.

I am almost shocked that they knew which team was which.

I have never seen announcers who knew so little about baseball.  I could have done better job and I know pretty much nothing.

Cubs file for bankruptcy.

Not exactly sure what this means... will they be kicked out of the league or re-locate, or does it depend who buys the team?

Ok, so I know most of the basics of baseball and enjoy watching on espn. They mentioned in the last Rockies/phillies game about "intentionally walking to first base"

can some kind soul explain a) how this is done and b) what the benefits are to the fielding team

ta

It leaves me wondering whether it's possible to walk accidentally to first base. Maybe you meant to walk to third, but got lost

It means that the team that is fielding (pitching) do not want to pitch to the guy at bat as they suspect he may well clobber the ball out of the park.   They would rather give him a free walk to first (by intentionally pitching wide straight to the catcher), so they can pitch to the next batter instead.

It's a tactic used more often than you would imagine, especially if one or two bases are already loaded with 1 or 2 outs - the theory being that you try and get the next guy out rather than risk a multi-run score.

Remember that this is in the USA. Therefore, by "bankruptcy" they actually mean "bankruptcy protection".

A buyer has been in place for months. Using Chapter 11 will allow the Tribune to sell the Cubs (and Wrigley I assume) without the buyer being liable for any of Tribune's debts.

And no, they won't move or be kicked out of the league. In fact the only effect on the Cubs will be positive. The uncertain situation with Tribune has meant there ability to sign players has been hindered. Once the sale goes through, the Cubs will have money to spend on even more imaginative ways of completely fecking things up.

in a weird way...

this can actually only help the cubs.

I bet the state would step in and buy them before they let them go anywhere.
