Fred McGriff elected to the Hall of Fame by the Contemporary Era Committee

Clemens, Bonds and Schilling weren't even close

Red Sox splash the cash on Rafael Devers. An 11-year, $331 million extension

I first saw Devers when he was playing with the Portland Seadogs in AA

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland make their World Baseball Classic debut Saturday against the USA.
Game starts at 2am Sunday GMT and is on BT Sport

They then play Canada on Sunday. That game is a 7pm GMT start and is also on BT Sport

After a decent performance in defeat against the USA and a hammering by Canada, GB are currently leading Colombia 6-3 in the 7th inning.

Harry Ford has just homered. He’s one of the top catching prospect in the Minors.

Made hard work of it for a while, but Great Britain hung in for their first win in the World Baseball Classic

Yep, they beat Columbia, so had the tiebreaker over them.

Run differential not used, because the ‘mercy rule’ was in effect in the WBC.

I've often* wondered why Bruce used 'speedball' rather than' fastball' in the lyrics

(* I've wondered once.....just now)

There's an interesting back story to Glory Days, it's based on a real life chance meeting Springsteen had with an old High School friend Joe DePugh in New Jersey, they did go back into the bar and reminisce about their baseball playing days and drank all night so legend has it.

Personally I'd change the line to 'curveball'

Quote
Domingo Germán watched with angst as the four umpires conferred near Rogers Centre’s first-base line on Tuesday night, and it was not a good sign when their chat ended quickly. An unacceptable sticky residue had been discovered on the Yankees right-hander’s palm, confirming that he had thrown his final pitch of an abbreviated evening.

Exactly what the substance was remains up for debate. Speaking after the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Blue Jays, Germán insisted that he had used only the rosin bag, which is available at the back of the mound. Crew chief James Hoye disputed that in the strongest terms, saying it was “definitely not rosin,” and that “this was sticky, as in my fingers had a hard time coming off his palm.”

Either way, Germán faces an automatic 10-game suspension, which puts the Yankees in a bind -- they cannot replace him on the active roster.

"I’ve got to apologize to my teammates and my team,” Germán said through an interpreter. “I'm putting them in a tough position right now. Understanding how much the bullpen has been used, and what my plan was for tonight to pitch, and putting them in a tough situation where I'm not pitching out there anymore."
