No I wasn't. And out of the list given I've seen James, Oakes, Enckleman and Posthma. I'll stick with Oakes I think, Asthma played well the one time I saw him.

That's an poorly conceived nickname. You've actually managed to keep just four of the letters in his name. That's like me calling Oakes 'Snake' ;)

Oakes? Who said Oakes? You're mad, fella - he was great in the air. Granted his shot-stopping wasn't superb, but he was a long way ahead of all the other 'keepers on that list in terms of quality if you ask me.

I once spoke to Dermot Gallagher who said that Villa fans still didn't like him for sending off Oakes at Blackburn - the handball outside the area that wasn't. He said almost pleadingly, 'It wasn't me who gave it it was the lineman. But they still blame me'. He also said that he was a Villa fan as a kid and used to go to games. Started to like him then. I spoke to hi, Mark Halsey, and another ref-who I can't rememebr coming back from Zagreb I think. They'd been reffing a European game. Actually, there was a 4th one too who was a real laugh but I can't rememebr him either. All I can remember was Gallagher was okay. It was just after -if you can remember- he only booked Beckham at Man U for pushing some Leeds player in the chest/head are, and the player went down like a sack of spuds. There had been a big debate about whether it should have been a red for days in the press. Fair play to him, I took the piss, he took it well, then he explained his decision and he was good to talk to. Mark Halsey, however, was a prick.

It's still a shite nickname, I've always preferred to call him The Ringmaster.

Who was it came on when Oakes got sent off at Blackburn and looked terrified every time the ball came near?

That was Adam Rachel. That was the only game he played for Villa wasn't it?

Last seen between the sticks for the mighty Moor Green.

Wasn't he last seen when his missus accused him of beating her up or am I thinking of someone else?

That was Matthew Ghent. The Muckraker piece was laughable as I recall, referring to him as a "former Villa star" when the word "employee" would have been nearer the mark. I don't think he ever even made the bench.

On the contrary, the Michael Oakes I remember was an excellent shot stopper but was too timid to command the box. Coming for crosses wasn't his forte at all.

Schmeichel was crap for us. Unless the shot was straight at him. His performance away at Blackburn was embarrassing.

Jake Findlay who I remember seeing play for us at Old Trafford one year has just been sacked as assistant manager at Stourport Swifts, obviously still waiting for his shot at the big time.

I voted for Enks, though in fairness he did have his moments such as the 2-2 away to West Ham in 02-03, the result that probably kept us up.

I don't think we've really had any genuinely bad keepers in the 20 years I've followed Villa.

Good shout on Tommy Hughes, he used to be brilliant at stopping shots then literally dropped the ball right in front of the goal, he was superb one minute and useless the next in that famous Notts County match, culminating in saving a penalty.
John Dunn was too small to be a 'keeper, again quite a good shot stopper but useless at commanding his box.
John Phillips had a brilliant debut then went a bit downhill but was transferred to Chelsea at a higher level, he also had a problem with crosses.
Jimmy Cumbes also used to drop the ball a lot, check out YouTube and the Albion game when he let Tony Brown's shot through his hands in front of the Holte.
Colin Withers also was prone to the odd mistake, I remember he punched the ball in his own net from a corner in the only goal of a game, I think against Blackburn.
But all of the above used to get quite a lot of practice, when we were pretty crap.
