Title: Aston Villa v Crystal Palace Pre Match
Post by: olaftab on August 26, 2025, 03:06:58 PM
When: Sunday 31 August kick off 7pm.
Where: Villa Park

Time to stop being silly and get the season going properly.

They would have had a flea in their ear all week and we're due to beat Palace.  I'm going for an unconvincing 2-0 win that still provides more questions than answers.

Christ.
Nervy Villa Park, shite time. Cliche but need an early goal, or nerves will take over. Ive heard they’ve returned lots of tickets, if true I can’t say I blame them, given the journey and such a shit time of the week. We need to be noisy.

Head says 0-2 them, but feck that, 2-0 us (Watkins 2).

Crystal sodding Palace. Hello darkness my old friend. I know they've sold him but I still expect Eze to score against us. Can someone buy Sarr before Sunday, please?

Palace only took the lower tier of the away allocation so anyone wanting tickets together may have more joy in the upper as it can be a struggle elsewhere.

Would probably go with this.

Been thinking back to our first bad run under Unai, when from memory we got tonked at home by Leicester, Liverpool away and Arsenal at home in successive weeks. Didnt we scrape a 1-0 at home to Palace to stop the rot and then weht on a great run.

Looking it up and we lost in 2013, 1991 and 1967. Think some of you have lost the plot bricking it against this lot at home. Not due another defeat until 2033.

Can't see Guessand being deemed ready to start and Malen clearly isn't trusted, so it leaves us with a few holes in the attacking side to be honest.

When Wales played Belgium in a qualifier earlier in the year,  Onana and Tielemans played together in central midfield so could see that happening.  If Rogers plays as a number 10. that leaves a hole on the left side with McGinn currently the only option to fill it.  That would mean McGinn moving from the right, which leaves a hole there which really we would need Guessand or Malen to fill.  If one of them does start there, then we've only really got one sub to cover both the striker and right hand side roles.

Not trying to be too negative, but it's looking a bit stretched already really and we're only a couple of games in.

My lad's done seven games now and has a record of one draw and six wins. So if that run continues on Sunday we can start talking about a crowd-funder for his season ticket.

I do sometimes wonder what Cash could do to warrant dropping in the minds of some. Like, I agree Torres is badly out of form, but had he committed half the errors that Cash has - not to mention generally looking as comfortable on the ball as a giraffe coming off a particularly bad night's sleep - there'd be calls for him to be put in the dock at The Hague.

Presumably in the absence of Garcia or a right-sided CB to play where Konsa does it's more a case of there not being an obvious alternative?

It's interesting to me that it's not even discussed that perhaps we should try Konsa out there with Mings and Torres, who can shuffle over to make a much more natural three like in fact Cash was asked to do against Brentford (and didn't do particularly well). Like, one thing is considered beyond question (two left-sided centrebacks failed once so it's OVER), and another thing not even worthy of mentioning (Cash at rightback shuffling across has been a weak link dozens of times).

I mean it's admirable, and I do like him, and I think he's been good at times! But he does make rather a lot of mistakes, and the smallest mention of this provokes wails of protest from corners that are one loose pass away from burning effigies of Onana in the streets of global capitals.

It's a strange time to have a go at Cash, he got a pass last weekend. The best of our back 5, back 6 if you count the 50m hole in our midfield.

Cash gets a lot of unfair stick, IMO. We were the best defence in the league in the last two months of the season and he played virtually every game. He's been a massive part of our success in the last two and a half season since Emery turned up.

He had far too much of the ball at the weekend and his delivery was mostly poor. As my 15 year kept on saying, ‘give it to the better players’!

Not blaming Cash for all our ills, in the way some do so with Torres and Onana and I think he (Cash) has been a decent player for us for a number of years, but I really do think we need to try something different there now. Whether that’s Garcia when fit, or Konsa, or horses for courses for the particular game.

If were a mid-table side looking for Europa or Conference league then Cash fits the bill.

If we’re a Europa League team looking to consistently be in the Champions League etc then Cash needs to be downgraded to a squad/back-up player and a better all round player bought in to replace him.

He’s been good at times, and poor at times. Can’t fault his commitment and effort, which we’ve seen lacking from better players.

Joking or confirmed? If he's injured again we need to cash him in next summer. He can't cut it.

Time for another 2/3 injuries. £50m rip off. We can't afford to keep striking out on huge transfers.

I’ve just taken advantage of the Palace returns and bagged a pair of tickets in the Doug. We always draw on my rare visits to VP. So it will be 1-1

My lad's done seven games now and has a record of one draw and six wins. So if that run continues on Sunday we can start talking about a crowd-funder for his season ticket.

Sod that, just make him manager

All because Palace got bumped down to the Conference and had a play-off game on Thursday. Then Sky who had already filled their Sunday broadcast slots decided they wanted to show it live and with the International break precluding  Monday night, we got shoved us into this graveyard time. You might have thought it could have been postponed?

Fully expect more and more games to get similarly shuffled as thd Greedy6 (masquerading as Sky) continue their takeover of The Prem.

It is such an awful time, who on earth wants to be watching football at 9pm on a Sunday when the match will finish. Might've helped a little if this was last week and there was a bank holiday the day after but there isn't.

Sky should've got far more stick for not just putting this at 2pm on Sunday given they can show all games in that timeslot now on their various channels.

As regards the game....I actually think we'll win. Nothing amazing but I think we'll finally put together some decent moves and get a narrow 2-1. Guehi being pulled out of their team late to go to Liverpool will help in that.

Palace only have the hex over us within the M25. Don't think they've won at VP since 2013 in the league and we've taken 7 points off them in the three games we've played them at home since Emery took over.

We really need a win as Everton away is looking far trickier than the last few years with what they've signed.

Midweek kick off times have been part and parcel of UK football for decades (although the introduction of 8.15pm) is horrible.

Sunday 7pm isn't really especially for our long distance travelling fans so it should not be encourage as a timeslot especially given it could've just been played at 2pm.

I think we all know begrudgingly accept Sky moving fixtures across the weekend but just playing this at 7pm rather than 2pm is really poor imo and surprised the club haven't made a bigger fuss about it after the Spurs fiasco last season.

Why they were allowed to just move it first to the Friday night before Palace's appeal had even been concluded was beyond me.

I reckon it’s going to be a weird atmosphere tonight, just hope they put in a decent performance to lift the mood.

It could turn very poisonous very quickly if things don't go as we hope tonight.

Only if people can't behave themselves.

Or maybe, and here’s a thought we could get behind the team.

If Tielemans and McGinn are the holding players I think that's a really exciting attacking forward line.

I know, people would take the piss. Even when the sun is sun shining, you wouldn’t be able to avoid that lightning.

The outfield team I wanted to see.

McGinn-Tielemans is actually decent as the pivot the 5-6 times we play it in a season, had plenty of good results over last two years with them.

Intrigued to see how Maatsen, Malen and Guessand all look from the start. We've had a week to prepare it at Bodymoor and will mean we start on the front foot which we badly need to do.

Having issues with my regular site so any river recommendations would be appreciated aswell.....
