A bit disappointed no Malen to start the game given his great pre seasom. But that’s a solid side. The bench looks very thin indeed.

Probably favouring the box midfield more than a wide man.

Interesting selection from Emery .
Bench doesn't look as strong as last season .

3 academy players and about £180m of signings doesn't scream thin to me.

The bench depth isn’t what it was last season attacking options-wise, unless Guessand hits the ground running.

Although not having Marcus Rashford and Asensio will do that to a bench.

Look at the benches we had at the end of last season compared to this one. We will be relying on the kids a lot more this season. Hopefully they can prove themselves at this level quickly. Obviously once Emi, Barkley, one or two new signings get back to will improve. Let’s see how it goes.

It's exactly the side I expected as we have the extra central midfielder to nullify theirs.  Bench is a tad thin, although some talent there.  Not sure Buendia offers much, we do have Barkley to come back but we need a couple of signings to push the quality up.

Moreno, Donk and Bailey are wantaway and don't count.

I hope we’re not going to try and battle their midfield. If we do that I think we’ll lose. We beat them last time basically by bypassing their midfield and negating it in the main.

Strong starting team, and the bench has some really good alternatives to mix it up. No problem with matchday squad, they just have to get focused on doing the simple things well and exploit the periods of dominance.
Big challenge will be for our fullbacks particularly.

To put it mildly we have been abysmal.

Replica of the last day of last season, we are very lucky to be going in at 0-0.

We have no control whatsoever in the game so we badly need to get some pace on the pitch. Not sure how long Guessand can manage but there is no excuse not to get Maatsen and Malen on, they've been in our set up long enough and need to be trusted given how bad the starting 11 has been.

Bizot only player with credit there - the rest miles off it. I thought before the game it was a mistake to try and compete with them in midfield and nothing has changed my mind. We should be trying to bypass their midfield - and the limited pace we have is on the bench.

Really poor, have to be loads better in the second half.

Terrible first half, we've gone to sleep, awful passing, what is this ponderous way of playing out from defence, has to change for the second half, Uni has to get into the players and wake them bloody up, coasting into a defeat, Onana off now, Mcginn of on the hour mark, Newcastle very flat at the back, resolute, but if you have the skill set and killer pass you can easily break through that, Evann on, he has that in him, give Bailey a shot we need somebody to run at them, thank goodness Isak isn't playing...Wow!

He wasn't the immediate cause of the red card, but we had the ball in a good attacking position and he did his usual thing when he gets in the final third and floated an aimless ball into the middle that was more like a great clearance for the Saudis.

He's a liability going forward.

Ridiculous. He crossed a ball to the top of the box and they countered, it happens. A winger who’s playing as a lone striker today walks in between two flat footed CBs - that’s the problem. Out of your mind.

Konsa didn’t have a good pre season. I commented a few times how he was caught on the ball or poor passes getting us into trouble. He’s very good when he’s on his game but there has been complacency creeping in.

The challenge on Watkins that was just waved away is why I think the red was harsh, there was just as much contact, and there has been for loads of challenges all game.

And that on McGinn is far worse.

Ref has just been really quick to give fouls on Barnes and Gordon, who needs little encouragement to throw themselves to the floor.
