Title: Aston Villa v Crystal Palace FAC Semi Final Pre Match Thread
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on April 23, 2025, 12:53:34 AM
Saturday.  5.15pm.

I’m quite a superstitious sort.  And I knew if we won tonight we couldn’t possibly win on Saturday it’s just Villa being Villa.

If we can stop Sarr having yet another great game against us his only great game and stop Kenny Wharton and Eze we are in with a great shout.

Play Mings. Play Mings.  Play Mings.

2-0 Villa, Watkins and Rogers. If they weren't so pissed off with Unai, it would be 4-0 with them each getting a brace.

Take the game to them and we win comfortably. Play the cautious game and it's 50/50. Mings must play and I also think Maatsen deserves a shout too.

Mings and Maatsen must start. I'd play Rashford wide left and Ollie upfront. Go all out attack like we did against Newcastle.

Let's hope Uni doesn't over think this. Play on the front foot, control the game and use our better squad over 90 mins. Our big players need to step up. Emi in particular has slipped well below his high standards. Can't afford to throw one in against another bogey team. Could be a long afternoon...

Que sera sera
Whatever will be, will be
We'll beat Palace by three
Que sera sera

Emi
Cash, Konsa, Maatsen, Mings
Kamara Youri
SJM Rogers Ramsey
Watkins

I am utterly gutted I can't go (saw Villa 3 times to Wembley and we won them all) but have to do family pick up from Heathrow at 6.30pm of all times.

I’d go with that team too, although Unai may play Mings at centre half over Maatsen !!

Wouldn’t be surprised if he plays Malen over Ramsey, with McGinn and Rogers switching around, there seems to me more space at Wembley but not sure if that’s a myth or not.

I guess so, maybe one day we’ll be like Man City and not be bothered about a mere semi final, looking at the resell sites you can get tickets in their end for £50, not even sure they will sell out their allocation.

Might need City to win their semi to keep the price of the tickets down for the final.

Before the match I sat in a pub for a bit and met some old school Man City fans. They were bemoaning what they'd become. Hated ticket prices etc. Hated that they couldn't give tickets away for games and hated that they were expanding the ground to feed a demand that isn't really there.

Whereas we still have hunger.

Will take a bit more time to get over last night, but having this to focus on helps.

Will be nervous, we’re relatively miles ahead of Palace in the league, because we are a much better side, still we struggle against them. Even the 3-1 at home last season took a late Duran worldy and a Dougie pen.

I’d go with

Martinez
Cash
Konsa
Mings
Maatsen
Kamara
Tielemans
McGinn
Watkins
Rashford
Rogers

Im not sure Unai will start Rashford and Watkins in the same team though. Im also not sure Rogers should start after last night, but he will. Ramsey would be unlucky to miss out.

3-1 us (Watkins, Tielemans, Rogers), could be after extra time gulp..

We need to go there and play them off the park and not get bogged down with recent history with Palace. If we cannot beat Crystal fucking Palace then we really dont deserve to win anything at all.

Too much respect shown to Man City yesterday as well. Fed up now of getting no silverware year after year. Go out smash the bejeezus out of Palace then smash either Forest or Cheat city in the final.

Score 4-2 to us.

This is it, this is what we dream of, what a certain generation crave more than anything else, the one missing honour in a lifetime, in a competition where once the trophy is in touching distance we fail dismally. We need to expunge that hurt, we need to make our mark. We need to win the FA Cup. We need to beat Palace and go one better than 2000 and 2015.

I expect Mings back, I expect a far more positive approach, I expect a wild a ferocious backing from us in the stands.

We were due a domestic defeat, it's out of the way and won't derail our fine end to the season.

2-1 (aet)

Expecting a physical battle again against these, it will be interesting to see how strong they go tonight against Arsenal.

My guess is a quite a few players will be rested tonight.  They're 6 points clear of the team behind them in 13th, and 4 points behind the team in 10th.  They might move up one place in the league between now and the end of the season, possibly.  But that's it.  The league season is pretty much done for them.

Their entire season is now resting on the FA Cup, and I suspect the team selected for tonight's league match will reflect that.

Glasner says not, they don't want to get smashed before the semi-final I would guess, but I can see Eze having the night off, and maybe Mateta.

If anyone 2 foots Saka and gets sent off do they miss Saturday ? I was going to look last night while Morgan Rogers was kicking anything that moved whilst on a booking, but didn't want to jinx it.

Extra time win.

It will be scrappy and hard to see us keeping a clean sheet v Eze, Mateta and Sarr but in the form we're in we should score a couple ourselves.

3-2 us.

Mings, Maatsen and Watkins all to start this surely after last night.

Id drop out Rogers for Malen but likely no chance of that. I thought both our full backs looked a bit flat last night so I'd start Garcia and Maatsen.

CP play a back 3 with Munoz a particular threat down their right. I'd guess that Digne might well play for that reason, and we'll use our RB as our attacking force. Maybe that gives Garcia a chance to shine?

The atmosphere should be electric in the Villa end Saturday. Palace will suffer from the fact a third of their support will be day trippers. All ours regular match going Villans ready to support like they do week in week out. Advantage to us off the field.

We have to pick up that intensity we had for PSG and Newcastle, play that slow style from the back we will asking for trouble against their fwds. Hopefully Unai has learnt from the match a few weeks ago.

Game will be won and lost in the middle of the park. I hope Kamara is on it . Was disappointed with him in the PSG games and again last night, more BMW than the Rolls Royce he's been billed as . Likewise Onana , I'd rest him and put Tielemans/ McGinn back in the team . Cut out the supply to eze / Sarr and we win .

I work at one remove for BMW Roadside Assistance, and it amuses me to see so many 25 plate BMW's breaking down already.

Meanwhile, my 14 plate Dacia Duster, £12,500 off the showroom floor, has gone 11 years and 93,000 miles without a single breakdown

I’m analogue man. Hard copy season ticket and print at home. At least you usually get a few days to sort any issues not that I’ve had any so far. But this is cutting things a bit too close. May have to utilise younger members who are sitting in a different area of stadium if push comes to shove. Such fun.

I normally download cup tickets to Apple Wallet from the email.

However, having the App as backup proved useful at the PSG game.
As I was walking to VP, I suddenly realised that I hadn't seen a ticket email.
Searched my messages, but nothing showed up. Luckily the ticket was in the App, so I downloaded from there.

The ticket email must have been accidentally deleted while I was clearing out all the junk/repetitive messages that Villa send out

That depends on, I think, on entrance area. For example below is area D turnstiles however I have no recollection if post entry  people are able to go to different blocks.

You'll have a colour zone on your ticket, if they're the same you can use the same turnstiles. However, it's all joined up inside so you can split up briefly and reconvene on the other side.

CP play a back 3 with Munoz a particular threat down their right. I'd guess that Digne might well play for that reason, and we'll use our RB as our attacking force. Maybe that gives Garcia a chance to shine?
Let’s hope that Emery does not try to match the 3 at the back with the disastrous consequences he did last time.

Back 5 really wasn't it? Bailey coming on at half time then at wing back. That was Emery's worst day with us I think. We were all over the place and got worse with every change.

Both Rogers and Watkins did play well from memory.

I'm a bit concerned about Palace's forward line rather than the team itself. Sarr always seem to turn into Messi against us but judging by a few of their recent results, their back line can be got at. They got roasted by Newcastle on the flanks. I'd play Malen and Rashford for this one.

I dreamed a while ago that we would face Forest in the final and win 2-1.

I have my lucky boxers, my lucky shirt (Watched all TV games - Spurs i was in Tenerife- in my 150 black shirt and bought it the night of the WH game) and i have everything crossed.

We are man for man better than them , squad better than theirs and Emery surely can out wit Glasner (although i know that sounds twattish considering recent results)

WE just have to win this - get into the final then they can play with zero stress and pressure to win the last 4 games and see where it leaves us

Come on you Villa Boys

Martinez
Cash
Digne
Mings
Konsa
Tielemans
Kamara
McGinn
Ramsey
Rogers
Watkins

Maatsen may be in with a shout.

Fascinating league fixtures Sat/Sun, we need Everton to do a good job on Chelsea, you can only assume Newcastle will absolutely slaughter Ipswitch, Man Utd beat Bournemouth, some interesting prediction on YouTube being put out as almost impossible for Villa to get CL even if we win every game, we rely on other teams and results.

The semi final, oh yeah! that as well, so, we beat Palace and go on to play Man City giving them the chance to do the double over us, CL and Cup Final, or we beat Palace and Man City. We have a trophy.

I just hope for a good game, hope we don't do the kind of thing we did in the dying embers v Man City, over to the lads to put in a good performance.

Edmund Goodman (8 October 1873 – 1960) was an English football manager. He had his playing career at Aston Villa cut short by an injury, sustained playing for the reserves, which meant he had to have his leg amputated. After this, he became assistant secretary at Villa. When Crystal Palace F.C. were formed as a professional outfit in 1905, they asked Villa for help in setting up the club. The West Midlands club offered Goodman to Palace and he helped to appoint their first manager and also chairman. After two seasons he took over as manager and remained so for 18 years, becoming Palace's longest serving manager in the process.

I’ve had this gnawing feeling since the draw that Palace have had the better of us in the past 12 months. That we have played London sides 5 times at Wembley and never scored a goal - Spurs 0-2, Chelsea 0-1 and 0-3, Arsenal 0-4 and Fulham 0-1.

I just hope that we turn up tomorrow and Emery works some magic. I’ve just got back from Asia and am jet lagged and knackered and simply hoping we can get through by whatever means necessary tomorrow.

That we have played London sides 5 times at Wembley and never scored a goal - Spurs 0-2, Chelsea 0-1 and 0-3, Arsenal 0-4 and Fulham 0-1.

2-2 against Tottenham in the 1981 Charity Shield.

I don't know if it's exactly a GOOD boozer but there always seems to be a lot of villa in the Metropolitan on baker street.  It's main advantage is it's an easy tube ride to the stadium.

Not slept last night and can’t shake bad feeling in this. My rationale? Too many parallels in my personal life from 10 years ago that were not good. I have to work up to the first half and no way other than here to monitor match. If match thread gets tense…….

Give me some hope Villains…….

Our club is in a VERY different place to the one it was in 10 years ago, hold on to that, mate. And remember the semi final in 2015!

I was at all of those apart from Spurs in 81, even a 2-0 loss against Arsenal in the 1990 Makita tournament, I don't remember us even having a shot in any of them, sure needs to change today.

Yes they do.

They will try and go man to man with us (like Newcastle did the other week).  The games we've lost against both teams over the past couple of seasons has been down to us losing the duels that are critical in a game where its's man to man.

The last couple of league results against them are giving their fans a false sense of security. The 5-1 was the only game under Emery where we simply didn't turn up because we had just qualified for the CL. The 4-1 there earlier this season was also due to difficult circumstances. We didn't have several of our defenders and started with a back 3 of Bogarde, Konsa and Disasi. Today is different. Unai has a full strength squad to pick from and the strongest bench in our history. We need to put these fukkers in their place. We are doing this today. 3-1 to the mighty Villa.
