Title: Aston Villa 2-0 Cardiff City Post Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on February 28, 2025, 09:53:38 PM
We absolutely battered them and won only 2-0. Asensio making the difference again. And we did this nil thing in the conceded column. Weird times.

A clean sheet, wonderful.

Marco is such a classy player. I thought Rashford did well.

Bogarde did very nicely.

Good to see Anwar back.

Could've been 6 with a bit more composure in the box.

Routine win, hopefully without using up too much energy.  Fair play to Cardiff for making it tough.  Good goals from Marco, good performances from most of them.  When's the draw?  Monday I presume. Clean sheet!!

Agreed, Garcia was our best I thought. Midfield two were solid. Easy win in the end and hopefully no injuries. Konsa was rubbish for their big chance at 0-0. Same as v Chelsea but I didn't think Asensio was in the game that much but showed composure with those finishes, maybe their keeper should have kept out the second. Often the most space in the box is near the penalty spot as he proved for both goals.

They are gonna focus on him - he is one of the most high profile English players over the last decade.

Nearly said at half-time, reminded me a bit of Bologna.

Loads of possession, chances, bad misses but playing well and you never really thought we weren't going to win it.

Unlike loads of other games where we've had plenty of possession and if never looked like we were going to score.

If Rashford converted from Bailey’s nice ball through, Bailey would’ve had two assists.  Some progress there.  A good win, but eventually we need more  goal/assists apart from our loanees.  Watkins was not bad.  Thought he could’ve converted that chance he tried to bend in but couldn’t have done much more with that chance close to the keeper.

Decent that. Never looked troubled but really we shouldn't have been.  Bogarde is the breakthrough player of the season, looks like a quality prospect.  Asensio showed what class looks like by having 2 chances and burying them both.  Rashford ran at defenders and was a handful.  Tielemans and McGinn did their thing.

Solid.

Re the clean sheet.

Let's not forget Emi's sharp save in the second half, down to his left from their right wing cross.

It was 0-0 at the time.

Pretty well the only thing he had to do in the whole game.

Crucial!

For all the fancy new VAR offside, they didn't seem to use it for the first goal to show Rashford was on. Was that because the on field decision was Onside or because it wasn't actually working? I'm sure in the World cup (and others they have used it), they showed it still to confirm the onfield decision was correct.

One of those no win games.

Pretty boring for the most part but we were always in control and should've been two up in first half.

Felt we'd eventually score and get through comfortably so low energy effort which was much needed before CL resumption.

Could really do with a home draw in next round aswell as most of what is left in the competition are pretty much all nightmare aways for us year in year out in the prem so FA Cup heats up, watch us get Palace away again.

Their keeper looks a few notches above Olsen. Perhaps one to look at.

Former USA international (it reads) somehow playing for a team struggling to stay in the Championship.

But then Olsen is a Swedish international, apparently. So not sure if that's much of a yardstick anymore.

Can only assume Olsen's rival for the Svenska gig is Trigger's brush and a pack of soggy biscuits.

Wasn’t it wonderful seeing El Ghazi back at Villa Park.
Class how appreciative our supporters were of him. Fondly remembered.

He gets the reception that perhaps Grealish hoped for when he came back (outside of staff and players) I never saw Jack get same love with everyone applauding from holte north and whole ground standing but maybe that did happen ?
Most telling I remember on his first appearance back everyone standing singing and chanting Villa tie I die to quite the crescendo

Heavy weather, we needed an early goal, had plenty of chances to get it but didn't. Not much to complain about really other than the tactics of 'keep the ball and wait for a mistake' are fine in the PL when the opp at some point will try at least one attack but not so great when the opp have no ambition whatsoever, it looked like they just wanted not to lose 5-0. We needed to move the ball much faster and get wide overloads, we didn't.

I fancied us to win 4-0, I still fancied us to win 4-0 at half time

First 10 or 15 I thought it was going to be 4 or 5, then when we couldn’t break down their stubborn defence, we lost our way a bit. Felt like the kind of game where if they sneaked one we’d lose, but ultimately once we got the goal it was comfortable. Thought everyone put a shift in.  Cardiff sang up, fair play, thought the Holte was quiet considering what was at stake.
Lets just hope we dont get man city, wolves, palace, Newcastle or Bournemouth away. Excited for the draw now, Preston away or anyone at home please, first time in 10 years into the QFs, exciting times.

It was a pity Chambers didn't get on, he played a key role in our CL qualification (assist for Duran to make it 2-3 v Livahpool).

I liked Cardiff's lad, Ng. Not sure what his xG was but he should have had a penalty in the first half.

yes looking at the incident again this morning looked a nailed on pen but no use crying over spilt milk . oh well back to the bread and butter Burnley at home Tuesday night

overall villa were far too strong for us but pleased 5 young academy products involved for us last night . our 18 year old left back and 19 year old centre half who was making  his first senior debut were immense . proud of them

driving back home soon

by the way is Aston station always that rammed after  match days ! ?
Its nearly always a nightmare at Aston station, I feel sorry for the station staff who are often treated with contempt by some arsey supporters, but its nearly always chaotic.

Safe journey home and well played last night

First club through to the last 8, don't think I've never said that before. I would have liked to have seen more of 18 year old Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, it was a lovely ball he put through to Morgan at the end, which he should have scored from.

A straight forward win.
Should’ve been a few more but we are through and that’s all that matters. A home draw again please and we can really start thinking about winning this.

Well played, especially the lad in defence.
Good luck with the rest of the season.

The club need to sort the massive queue for Trinity Rd A block. I'm pretty sure a lot of fans will have missed the kickoff  . The new bar area has created one big queue  instead of the normal  3 or 4 . This was the entrance down the steps from William McGregor statue . Don't know if it was as bad further up the Trinity road A block entrances.

Looked really composed,  did well and a few nice touches. Hopefully he stays that composed when he's through 1 on 1 with the keeper at the Holte End at some stage.

thought we were decent tonight  but the gulf in class shone through in the end

hopefully we brought  some good  atmosphere to villa park think i've lost my voice
Yes I think you did well and unlucky with the penalty call.
Colwill is going to be a very good player but they all put a shift in and stuck to the system. Eventually you ran out of gas.
All the best.

Was very impressed with Colwill in midfield. Very strong on the ball and good engine on him.

Whilst I wouldn't be moaning about the penalty being given by the ref, we have had more stonewall ones ignored just in the last two weeks, so no it wasn't unlucky.

One very negative aspect of last night. Me and my 8 year old grandson were in R7, first row right in the corner. He wanted to chance his luck on getting an autograph. Area there is mainly families and was full of boys and girls. A twat near us spent the entire match looking up towards Cardiff fans and keeping up a constant barrage of "Shut up you sheep shagging ******". Stewards was merely 2 yards away but took no action. I didn't complain as I know from previous experience what happens. We do have some proper nonce at VP.

Anyway the boy's night was made when Anwar signed his shirt.

I’m glad your grandson got his shirt signed. Anwar is a proper gent!

I was in the families area with my nephews some years ago, when they were about the same age ( they’re 30+ now!) and I remember someone doing something similar, so perhaps he’s the resident idiot. My nephews thought it was funny and then dismissed him, so hopefully your grandson was able to forget him in the excitement of the goals and meeting Anwar afterwards.

In the Prem it would almost certainly be given. Bogarde misses the ball and kicks yer man's boot. Seen far softer penos given.

FTFY. I suspect the decision by the ref is was the contact enough for the player to go down. But we have and haven't been given similar, and also I think it was similar to I think Arse last year when Konsa(?) had a high foot with Havertz and the ref waved it away.

For it to be a penalty it has to be a careless or reckless kick or one involving excessive force. Accidentally catching him as he follows through after the bloke had already kicked the ball isn’t a foul.

Good luck for the rest of your season, DC. Hope you had a decent journey home.

Met a bunch of Cardiff supporters in the Wetherspoons on New St station after the game … nice bunch of lads, good laugh. Not sure about your version of Land of my Fathers mind, it’s a belting song as is and doesn’t really need to be brought down to that level. But yeah, that aside you defended well, particularly in the first half, and my opinion of your fans hasn’t really changed since I went to see you play Torquay in the 4th division in the late 90s … good laugh, quite a dark sense of humour, but for the most part friendly & likeable :)

I expect the Brighton one, the ref stated he didn't see the contact, hence the VAR review. Friday he did see it and ruled not enough contact to be classed as a foul. If he had given it though, VAR was never overruling it.

Watching the MOTD highlights, there was one stage when Maatsen AND Garcia were around their penalty spot. I did notice Maatsen seemed to making most of his runs passed Rashford into the box so I believe he was told to drift in to pull defenders out from the centre.

Just watching the goals again and both of them could have been Watkins'. The first one, it looks like Rashford is trying to square it across the goal, where Watkins is waiting for it, but it hits his calf and possibly the defender and deflects back to where Asensio is. The second one, the pass is coming to Watkins but he maybe gets a shout from Asensio who is just behind him, because he moves out of the way of the ball, and Asensio scores.

The second one, he might not have scored from it given where he was, but the first one I think he scores if the ball had come to him.

Not much point to this post, I just thought it was interesting how Watkins was in the right position for both goals.

I wasn't too impressed, tbh. Reminded me of when we went to Tottenham in the cup when we were in the second tier, and you got the impression we were quite happy so long as we didn't get absolutely twatted. Even when they were behind they didn't really attack. I know there's a gulf in resources and they had players out, but even so. Plymouth put in a much better performance at Man City, by comparison.

Maybe, yes. Still seems a strategy that offered a pretty low chance of success, hoping you'd score with pretty much your only chance, while weathering 90 minutes of solid pressure. I think they'd be able to hold their heads up higher if they'd have a proper go and lost 3 or 4-1.

Their manager said beforehand that they basically weren't trying to win. They have a huge challenge to stay in the Championship and that's where their priorities lie. He didn't set out to get beaten, as such, but he clearly had no interest in having to play another game outside of their league.

I'd imagine some of the players who don't usually play were eager to give a good account of themselves and put in a decent performance, even with the defeatist tactics, if you want to call them that. It might work out well for the club in the long run, if they can do it every week for the next few months.
