Not sure whether Mings is dropped because of what happened or whether it's part of a planned phased return.

Bailey again. He really owes us a big performance tonight.

I’d have gone Kamara- Onana- McGinn
Play a bit more direct because of the press with Duran up front because Watkins struggles to control the ball

I’m hoping this post won’t age well

Bailey maybe the only one with pace but, I’ve yet to see it this season. Seems to just pass the ball 5 yards backwards nearly all the time.

Not sure whether Mings is dropped because of what happened or whether it's part of a planned phased return.

I imagine that it's because any match we play against a "better team" is going to be Konsa - Carlos - Torres, given it's clearly the thing that works best in those situations.

Maybe there's a place for Mings in that in future, but it's difficult to see how.

Yes, surely one of the basic tasks of a winger is to attack their defender on the outside, something that Bailey has steadfastly refused to do this season.

Balance is fine but not when it is utterly ineffective, surely?

Tbf, I really don't think it matters much which team Unai puts out today. I just hope it's not another embarrassing scoreline.

We just need to get it out of the way and work on a few things over the break.

3-0 to them.

Bailey again. God love him, he's been terrible all season.

Funny, but he's the opposite of Watkins - he seems to thrive when there's a bit more competition.

Anyway, we need to sign more tricky wingers. A LOT more.

Villa have surprised us recently by going from great to Blues, time to reverse it and for SUE to ram uncle festers words down his throat.

Seems like McGinn getting dropped has been coming for a while. But at the expense of Bailey who hasn't kicked a ball for us this season, that's a strange one. Big show of faith also in likes of Torres and Watkins who are both very fortunate to be starting. Less said about the RB/RCB combo the better. Think Emery should have got Kamara into the team tonight at the expense of Bailey or Rogers with Tielemans further forward. We look wide open for Liverpool to exploit in all honesty. Hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised. It's been a tough week so we need a performance tonight.

All in all a pretty good half. Should be level based on what we've created and miles more intensity than anything we've seen since Fulham away.

We need this to be the regular standard from Palace at home.

By far our worse player has been Rogers who's given it away pretty much every time he's received.

Will Ramsey ever catch a break with injuries, a decent half and he then pulls up stretching for the ball.

Performance is much better really. 2 x centre halves have been very good. Ramsey was our best I thought, even Bailey much better. 2 x CMs holding their own, though Tielemans yellow is a problem.

Negatives, Rogers has been awful so will have to be hooked at half time. Konsa at RB continues to be where the ball goes to die...

Id push Tielemans forward and bring in Kamara. We need to be a bit more decisive in their box.

We are still somehow in the game despite Watkins and Rodgers being woeful (again). JJ looked to be our biggest threat and now he's off injured. Bailey has improved and is a vital outlet for us. Other than their counter-attack, Liverpool are very ordinary.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Liverpool - Match Thread

One down, feels like about twenty for all the prospect there is of us getting back into the game. Eleven against eleven, feels like we've had three sent off (and one should've been). Our corners are attacks for them.

There's just so much space in the middle, we can't keep playing this open 4-4-2, at the very least in these sorts of games. Maybe now McGinn is on it can be balanced out a bit, but man. Far, far too open.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Liverpool - Match Thread
Post by: Astnor on November 09, 2024, 08:58:32 PM
We did match them most of the half. Rogers looks unwell and half a player. Watkins being Watkins. Bailey a disgrace for their goal. Ramsey our best attacking player by along distance and then we loose him to injury. Central midfield and back five did fine IMO bur worrying signs last five minutes when we did start look a bit loosing belief and organisation so  I m bit worried second half can be in direction of two last second half we have had.

This new routine with Martinez and the Defenders invites mistakes.
Tielmans booking came from a crap out ball giving them a throw when we were in no danger, he got caught out and committed the foul
Should have been a penalty
Keep at it and we might sneak something
Keep giving them the ball and we will be fucked

We didn't leave Bailey back he was on the edge of the box when we lost possession. He is always there for corners. The problem is that we normally leave 1 or 2 of the fullbacks deep but this time we let Konsa go into the box, Digne took the corner so we had everyone in the final 3rd and Liverpool have the quickest front line in the league and caught us out.

I don’t think Bailey was a disgrace for their goal.
I thought he covered well, was up with salah in a footrace and got into enough of a tangle with salah to take him out.
There was no one else backing him up and picking up the runner, and Martinez was in no man’s land.

Shocking goal to concede but a much better performance, if Ollie had been at his best we might well be leading now. Playing out from the back, we have looked good, played some quality stuff and at a fast pace. Desperately sorry JJ, he looked back to his best, hopefully not serious.

He was the furthest person back. This was a tactic used for diaby last season but he did this like towards the end of last season. Not sure why we are not leaving a defender back further at such a early stage of the game.

Bailey did well I thought, diced with a red card though but dropped Salah anyway. Martinez went down far too early for the shot too. As Alan Hutton pointed out, Digne's starting position was the problem. But I don't like any tactic that just has two players back like that. Leave Konsa back, at least he can run.

A shame, we've played well tonight.

This needs to be the standard when we come back after the break, not sterile play against Palace and Brentford.

Carlos was good today, that was incredibly unlucky.

Agreed on first point but that wasn't unlucky at all. Prat could and should have just headed it out of play.

We lost the game from the corner in the first half, everything since then has been a formality.
Forget the we played well, we matched them, what we did do is throw the game and it’s repetitive and borring.

Performance been ok giving the circumstances. This is how Liverpool play - very solid at the back and pacy attacks. We where set up to play our usual style and not to fit or hinder their style. We didnt really threath their goal much and they where always going to score a couple on the breaks with Salah involved. Carlos was good and has been lately IMO unlucky with their last but not at fault for the loss IMO.

The point is we are dropping. My mid-table comment is not on where we are now but where we are headed. Over the last few games we have lost the plot and despite keeping in the game for a long time there was no real sense we were going to turn it around. Of course it's Liverpool but other challenging sides are getting results against the harder teams and we are not at the moment. There's a pattern to our play which no longer has a cutting edge. I hope I'm wrong but this feels like a bit of a slump. It will be telling when we come up against teams around us.

Thought the game plan worked well. Liverpool created very little. We did well at turning the ball over and last season we would have punished Liverpool. We have lost our cutting edge over the last few weeks. Watkins, Rogers and Bailey below par and thus we are missing those chances. That Rogers miss early in the second half was so crucial. Two shit goals on the break meant it was one of those nights.

We already have and we can see what is happening.
Too many changes in too short of time period. The team looks unbalanced ,not focussed and vulnerable.
It’s not working, the set up has made mistakes, we may as well accept that.
