If they're all out, that still leaves Tielemens and Barkley in the middle (pretty strong), and Philogene and Maatsen to play either side of them. Considering that would be FIVE first-team midfielders out, it's a testament to our squad building in the last two years that we can still put out a decent 11 - but the bench options will be weak...

On Saturday I was thinking that we would win one, draw one and lose one of the three games coming up v Ipswich, Bayern and Man Utd, and pondering which outcome I'd prefer in each game. Of all three options, losing to these was my least preferable, and I'm kind of thinking it might suit us if they were to get a decent result in Porto tonight.

That's worrying. Might have to shift Rogers to the left and maybe start Buendia off Watkins. Id start Maatsen at left back too.

Tielemans Barkley

Jaden Rogers Maatsen I imagine.

Given our slow and weak their CM is generally we don't have to be at full strength to beat them. Spurs only had Bentancur as a DM for example last week.

Martinez
Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen
Tielemans, Barkley
Philogene, Rogers
Buendia, Watkins

Likely to have a number of players out. No harm to rotate the likes of Carlos and Digne, Cash might only last 60-70 mins anyway.. As much as last night was great, to beat these would mean even more. Squad is going to be weak enough in all honesty with all the injuries.

My contempt for Newton Heath knows no bounds, mainly down to the media's lovesick schoolgirl like obsession with them amongst other things. See the Guardian's 10 things this morning. We've just registered a fantastic win in Europe, on the back of a fine start to the season but that's not enough to be the primary focus, yes, it's all about a faded, struggling mid table side.

Anyway, I knew the fucking rat would get a reprieve and my next prediction was that he would be instrumental in a win for his despicable bunch on Sunday. But I'm going to be wrong this time, the place will be rocking and NH will be dispatched, making it a victory not only for us, but for the workers of the world, against that fucking ****** Ratcliffe.

I always like to think that in the three biggest games we've ever played against them, we've won, ie the 1957 FA Cup Final, the 1970 League Cup Semi Final, and the 1994 League Cup Final. Even in 1992/93, when we went head to head with them for the title and eventually came second, we took 4 points from them.

I'm too young to comment on 1970, but 94 certainly felt like a much bigger deal to me than 2010.  Maybe because back then the Premier League hadn't yet consumed everythinng and the League Cup Final was still considered one of the biggest games of the season, plus it was payback for them robbing the league the year before.

Not sure how the 1994 League Cup Final and 1970 semi are bigger than the 2010 final.

1970, we were in the old third division, they had Best, Law and Charlton, 62,500 inside Villa Park, two days before Christmas Day.

Beat them in the League Cup that year too.

That McTominay looks like a pretty decent 10 at Napoli speaks volumes for how poor Ten Haag seems to be at creating a cohesive structure. Mainoo and Urgarte I suspect it will be.

I've pushed Morgan wide and Tielemans into.10, as I am guessing both JJ and Bailey won't be back. McGinn still out too.

Sure. But a semi-final isn't bigger than a final. Assuming all other results stayed the same, I'd swap the semi-final wins in 1963, 1970, 2000, 2010 and 2015 to win our most recent final in 2020.

Honestly, I think it's because the media smells blood.  It's not fawning, I think there is so much coverage because Old Trafford us about to be the centre of a big story.  If we beat them at the weekend, there is a pretty decent chance they bin Ten Hag. He's the odds-on favourite to be the next manager sacked in the premier league.  They're already in the bottom half, and a win would see us 9 points clear of them after 7 games.

For the players they have, they're underperforming, and the reality is they won't stay rubbish forever - unfortunately.  We need to take this opportunity to stand on their neck and put Ten Hag out of his misery.

My guess is Unai will have them WELL up for this.  Not only to prove they can compete in Europe and the league at the same time, but this is a golden opportunity to put breathing distance between us and a rival for the European places.

As I expected, the Onana one never felt like anything worth worrying about. I reckon Bailey might be on the bench but I'd expect Philogene to start. I wonder what we'll do on the other side though:

Maatsen starting on the wing?
Rogers out wide and Duran starting?
Buendia starting?

Or as Ads suggested push Tielemans forward and bring Barkley in. I reckon there's a decent argument for any of those options.

Konsa Carlos Pau Digne
       Tielemans Barkley
Philogene                   Maatsen
            Rogers
                     Watkins

Philogene on the right to give Ezri support - that's the side down which Rashford plays.

Alternatively, move Ezri insde for Carlos and start Ned at rightback.

Not a lot on the bench
Gauci
Bogarde
Ned
Emi B

But whoever we start- just please, please, PLEASE beat this bunch of scabby toerags and their ratboy captain... not forgetting the fawning support they get from referees and VAR officials

I’ve given up on this fixture for many years. I actually thought we’d turned the corner on SUE’s first game - only to be followed by 4 straight defeats and some of them in that usual sickening manner.

Remy junior before SUE’s arrival kept getting optimistic every year only to be kicked in the gonads like his old man so many times before.

This year, there is a hint of rage behind SUE’s mask and I think he’s taking it as a managerial slight that they’ve gone past him 4 times in succession. He will demand a repeat of the double header last year - arse-man city, monumental performances.

I really just don’t know.

I’m still on a cloud since Wednesday.

Emery said a few weeks ago that all going well Kamara and Mings would be available for selection after the international break. Highly unlikely either of them will be starting a game immediately, but it would be a hugely positive thing to have them back in a match day squad, especially Mings.

I watched them the other night. They looked ok going forward although they wouldn't have scored two had Porto not had butterfingers in goal. They were all over the place at the back at times though. Porto caught them on the break two or three  times and didn't finish them off. This is a jolly good chance to roundly trounce them.

I watched them the other night and they are woeful. So bad in fact that noneone gives them a chance; forescasting a comfortable Villa win. And yes, by every metric and statistical measure, we beat them. However, i have listened to pundits line up all week to predict an easy Villa win to put the final nail in Ten bob's coffin. However beware, he is a jammy bastard and and nearly always spawns a result at the 11th hour when he looks a gonner. You know what happens, they beat us and Rat boy, (who has been shit all season and by rights should not be playing) has the game of his life. He will either dive to get a penalty or stick one in the top corner from outside the box.

I hope that I am wrong and we win 10 nil of course. I am looking forward to it but with a hint of trepidation.

They have been crap for a few years now but have managed 4 wins v us/Unai in that time and won 2 trophies , even when they are shite they somehow conjure up results against us and trophies.

Paul, you're always worried about how we play!

I wish one of the journos at the presser had the research to notice that Cash was on the bench on Weds and if he was likely to feature tomorrow.

I was worried about this one, but I watched the clips of Unai's press conference this morning.

Seemed even more focussed and determined than usual (if that's even possible!?) - Angry almost. I've changed my mind after watching it - I think we could end up giving them the battering their performances against us have long deserved!

Providing we don't leave ourselves open to the counter attack, we'll give them a hiding. Their success against us has mostly come from a ball in behind our fullbacks. They'll sit deep & try to catch us out. We need pace at fullbacks to counter that threat.

Martinez
Maatsen Konsa Torres Cash
Tielemans Onana

Would be lovely to have a comfortable win against this lot though.

McGinn missing and doubts over Onana, Bailey and JJ on top of the more longstanding injuries.

We usually play these spawny fuckers at the worst time and this seems no different.

I'd take the draw and hope it gives Ten Haag more time to oversee his master plan...though if a defeat for the Red Mancs sees Gareth Southgate parachuted in we should go flat out.

We're a top team, they're midtable. Why should any fan be happy to take the draw?

We need to think like a top team because we are a top team. The days of shit Villa are long gone. Any other top 6 team would not be happy with a draw against these at home, and neither should we be.

Anything other than a win is two points dropped, even with our injuries.

As long as Van Nistelrooy can’t come off the bench we should just be treating this as any other fixture. They’re a mid table team at present, like a Fulham. We shouldn’t be making them to be anything beyond that.

Good point. Looks so far like Chelsea are pushing hard to join up with last year’s top 4 (though remains to be seen how Maresca responds to adversity). So keeping pace with them is a must. With our CL performances, there will hopefully be 5 CL places this year, so the Chelsea resurgence is not likely to be existential for our plan.

Our top 4 odds have shortened slightly incidentally - most bookies had us below Yanited and the Jaudis at the start of the season. That seems to have been corrected. I get why they still have Chelsea as favourites to finish above us (given their spending), but Spudz?

Arsenal 1/20
City 1/6
Liverpool 1/7
Chelsea 8/13
Spurs 5/2
Villa 7/2
Newcastle 5/1
United 6/1

I will be watching this in Spain with a MU "supporter". Please please win this one Villa. Last season when we beat City 1-0 at VP  we thought we had peaked then went on to beat Arsenal three days later. Now we've beaten Bayern 1-0 can we repeat it? I reckon we can. I'll go for a 1-0 to the Villa.

Martinez

Digne
Pau
Carlos
Konsa

Morgan
Onana
Barkley
Philogene

Tielemans
Watkins

Possibly go with this, only alternative really is Tielemans in his normal role and Beundia behind Ollie, might be a big ask for Beundia though, considering his lack of football.
Personally, I’d have Barkley’s fresh legs alongside Tielemans in the middle. But Unai seems determined to start Onana come what may, so that doesn't seem likely in the immediate.
Assuming JJ is out, I’d have Rogers on the left. Though Philogene executed the plan very well Weds, I still wasn’t totally bowled over by his “footballing” performance (still a bit lightweight, tendency to lose his footing, stuff like that), plus fatigue, so another start would be a big ask. Maybe Cash up the right? Could Barkley play there, with Onana in the middle? We’re a bit light in the midfield spots, I’m slightly surprised to find.
60 minutes for Buendia alongside Ollie.

The fact Chelsea have been able to name practically 2 spectate squads for the league and their European campaign gives them a big advantage, if it stays tight between us.

I'd worry more about the mental recovery than the physical. Doubt there'll be many changes to the lineup, other than injury enforced ones, and even then the replacements played on Wednesday too. We could carry the momentum and smash them, or we could be mentally drained and have a nightmare.

I see Maguire calling for the players to take responsibility and start delivering consistently and to basically save ETHs job. Hopefully they don't actually want to save his job. (Maguire does mention VP being a great place to go to play a game though, so he gets points for that)

Noticed that as well, Lee. Was looking forward to a few in-depth analysis or feel-good player articles, but zip. Plenty about Yanited (and fair enough, with a sacking looming), but thought we’d be decent box office this weekend.

Wonder if that has something to do with Unai’s generally media shy approach though, as much as the media being disinterested?

If Man U play at their very best level, which they do occasionally, then we need to play to our usually good levels to win.
If we play to anywhere near our best, it's a demolition job they can't live with whatever they do.

I feel like there was an awful lot of coverage of us post Wednesday night, so it's possible they've just ran out of things to say about us. TenHag being on the brink of being sacked is the angle they're all running with this weekend. If we win or lose the story will still be about him/them. It's just how the media works. For every Man U fan who will click on a story about them, there's 20 fans of every other team who'll click on it to laugh at them.

Despite how shit they are with their manager on the verge of the sack, if they win they're only 3 points behind us, and we've played 5 of the bottom 9. I guess you could argue those teams are in the bottom 9 because we've beaten them and it's early in the season.

They seem to pull out a result when they need it which just keeps them ticking along. Maybe good for us in the long run this season because I can't see Ten Hag finishing above Emery.

I hate this game though.
