Not what I expected, a little concerned by the back 5.

Donk in defence should be 'interesting'.

Not nearly as much rotation as I thought.  maybe the plan is to smash them early and then bring on subs.

I don't mind the team apart from Donk in defence. I know we'd all prefer Emi in goal but he's going to be rested now and again.

I expected to see Chambers purely because he was on the graphic on the club website. Maybe he's injured. Or his mum works in the social media department .

Fair shout to Unai.  He has realised we just don't win cup games - so he picked a back line to ensure we get this over and done with as quickly as possible and can focus on the important things like  what badge to have this week, or whether wet suits make good attire for a footballer

It’s an impressive bench!!

The team’s fine, considering the whole squad and getting individual players their first hand experience to carry us through the season. We’ve got goals in there!

I don’t care about Everton’s choices, as I have no idea about their options 😄

I am confused why we aren't using the game to get some consistency with a settled back four.

Bringing in a player who has barely played at all, never mind at CB & pushing Torres to LB, where he looked shaky as fuck, seems very odd to me.

Hopefully I am given a lesson by the end of the game...

Would be nice to see a bit of Kellyman some time in the game.

I think the trouble is that, given the game coming up, the back four will be doing as much running as everyone else, and it'll be vital that they're 100% ready to go to compete with Mitoma et al.

I think we'll have now tried every single possible defensive combination and formation, so going forward we will only use the good ones and concede very rarely.

Which means the only one who would be 100% would be Digne...

I accept what you are saying as an explanation & see some logic in it, but I have still have questions, lol...

I think its probably early enough in the season not to have to worry too much about tiredness & a solid consistent back four is important to get them all used to playing together in Emerys system & help eradicate some of those errors that have haunted us so far this season when playing someone half decent...

But hopefully we win both games & my words are rammed back down my throat... 👍

Couldn't disagree more. Unai does all the work for this group. Tells them where they need to be, when they need to be there and what needs to be done. It's the personal skill level and effort of a couple of these donkey's that don't seem to understand that their job is on the line.

Get Tielemans off, he's making a fool of himself. So nonchalant, uninvolved and wasteful. Dendoncker not far behind - what the hell is he thinking half the time. He runs like his spine is fused together.

Remarkably bad actually! Really incredibly poor.

Olsen's been fine with his hands but his feet continue to give me bad dreams.

McGinn has veered between looking like a natural and a rank amateur in his position.

Donk started well but faded badly.

We've barely got the front two or Zaniolo into the game - they know they're allowed to pass to them right?

Tielemans...I don't know man. Not so much a poor man's Maddison as a destitute hobo's Kai Havertz. I don't know what he does, but I know he does it badly.

I hope Unai throws things at them.

Finished last 5 mins or so ok but fault lies with Emery here more than the players. That team is an absolute mess. McGinn left back! Tielemans can't play the role on the left ahead of him either. Likes of Duran and Donk have been woeful too but hard to shine in such a mess of a team. Fortunate we aren't further behind.

Get Digne on for starters at left back. 4231 with McGinn on the right, Zaniolo centre and Diaby left.

Before they scored I thought we looked pretty good, without creating much. I thought I couldn't remember watching 2 sides in the same division look so mismatched. Then Olsen started putting his defenders under pressure and its like the whole side crumbled. Everton obviously got their tails up too and the best thing I can say is that at least we're not 2 or 3 down.

Duran, for all his potential, and I hope he bags a couple to make me eat my words, doesn't look ready to lead the line for whole games. I'm also a bit disappointed in our inability to get Diaby into recent games. Hopefully we can sort it in the second half.

Tielemans reaction time is like watching a diplodocus turn into an X Box.

I quite like my "Tielemans has all of the pace & mobility of a 357 year old oak tree" piss poor attempt at a little gallows humour, but I think that one may just be my new favourite... 😂

Emery does not give a shit about domestic cup competitions. I love the bloke but this pisses me off massively

If he gave a shit he’d never play Olsen (not that this is all down to him, as surely we can score some goals). Anyone with eyes and a brain know  he’s a liability. But hey it’s the norm to play the backups in this competition

This is Steve Bruce stuff

Bruce would be (and frequently was) hammered for serving up dreadful performances like this.  Emery shouldn't be getting away with it regardless of his record so far.

Second best and lucky to be only 1-0 down at half-time.  Olsen poor in the lead up to the goal and then beaten at his near post.  McGinn all over the place at left-back, Bailey was desperate to get off the pitch the minute we went 1-0 down, Tielemans can't keep the ball in midfield and we just seem content stroking the ball around the back with no urgency at all.

Looks like Watkins and Digne are coming on at half-time.

Well, it can't be any worse second half, can it.

Can it?

I would expect us to come out of the blocks pretty quickly second half, and a few changes on about 55 minutes if it's not had the desired effect.

I'll say this about Unai though - how many really good performances have there been this season? We've been abysmal in every defeat, and going through the wins, we dismissed Everton in third gear, Burnley were their own worst enemies (and very solid relegation candidates), Hibs were out of their depth, we showed spirit against Palace but didn't create much until a wondergoal and a penalty, we survived some hairy moments against a genuinely terrible Chelsea side before winning 1-0 with a man advantage...

I mean I'm not exactly complaining about winning, I promise. I just don't really remember the last time I watched us and thought 'damn, that was top drawer material'. We seem to struggle very badly to get the ball out of our own half and look outnumbered in midfield all the time, like a classic 4-4-2 problem vs. 4-3-3. You can't say it's been excellent, and when it's been bad it's been abhorrent.

Don't know why he just didn't drop Donk back to CB after 10-15 mins and move Torres over to the left. Leaving McGinn there was cruel.

I know it's early days but I can't help feeling we've dropped a bollock signing Tielemans.

I refuse to blame Dendonker for being poor at centre back, as how bad must Chambers and Lenglet be in training for hime to be selected in the first place.

And at the same time Newcastle second string holding City and now going for the win.

Man City players clearly rattled by having to get the bus back later. My heart goes out to them.

It is strange how they can be so good in the league and so bad in the cups.
I don’t think we have been that great in the league.

Injuries have badly affected this season. Despite this, we've done very well to win 4 out of 6 games and sit in 6th place.

We haven't always hit the heights yet this season but only 4 times in PL era have we taken more points after 6 games than we have this season.
No use in a cup tie.

This rotation lark will take some getting used to for players and fans alike!!

Doesn't seem to be an issue at most other sides in our league position when they have played "weakened" teams. Although there is "weakened", and then there is deliberate sabotage which he seems to be doing by playing two midfielders in defence, including a right sided attacking player as Left Back.

Because you need proper depth to be competitive in four competitions, and when you have a manager that puts his faith in rotational players to at least put forth a decent effort - you end up with the Youri Tielemans of the world stealing a living and giving the opposition breakaways.

If "Villa get a goal" I'm having Unai's face tattooed onto my bellend.

Now I have had my nipple tattooed, & that was quite painful, but I imagine you are in for a very different experience when you go for your bellend tat... 😂

I would just love a last minute equaliser. Something really flukey like hitting Pickford in the nuts and rolling over the line
