Two keepers on the bench again does rather tell its own story about our January window.

Nevertheless, it's a decent team that looks pound-for-pound better than theirs, I'd say.

Two keepers, FFS, what on earth is the point of that? At least put a youth player on the bench who you might need to call on, or who you can throw on for 30 minutes if we're 3-0 up.

I'm not sure what it says. Kadan Young has bene on the bench regularly since the WC and is available so if it was just about lack of numbers you'd still have him ahead of Sinisalo.

I wonder if it 's because Emery likes the look of him and wants to get him used to the 'experience' with us but doesn't want to put the pressure on him potentially having to come into the team if Martinez gets a knock

I don’t get that at all. I wish someone in the media would ask him because there is literally no need for it. If you don’t trust Olsen that you need to add the kid, don’t put him in the squad and add another player.

I think their forward options are better than ours. I'd rather have Maddison and Barnes than Buendia or Bailey.

Surely he can just sit in the dugout without having to waste a space in the squad? It's madness.

Is it though? We had Kadan Young on the bnech for weeks and never saw him play so I'm not sure this is all that different.

If Emery wants to use 1 spot on the bench as a way of rewarding players for training well (or similar) then it's fine by me, even if it looks a bit weird.

I guess he rates Sinisalo and wants to integrate him into the squad, although he doesn't quite trust him yet. Maybe he will be our number 2 goalie next year. Bench looks pretty good actually, although pity K.Young isn't on it.

Exactly, our U21s haven't played for over a week and don't have their next game until Friday so every single one of them would be available for this game and we know a fair few have been training with the first team so this is a choice Emery has gone with, not something he's doing just to fill the bench.

Leicester playing with wingers, I'd fancy Digne to deal with the threat better than Moreno who still looks like he's finding his feet and his strengths are more attacking then defending. For me it's a good call.

It's bollocks. Every player on the pitch should be able to come on and make a difference. There's a reason teams don't put two goalies on the bench, just like there's a reason they don't leave themselves with only one senior striker.

I really dont like the 2 GK subs, as I see it there are only three reasons why we have 2 keepers on the bench
1) Unai thinks it is more likely we will need to sub the GK twice, then one of our youth players being able to make an impact
2) Unai is trying to prove a point
3) Olsen has something in his contract, but Unai has no intention of using him

3 doesn't make sense, so either it our available youth are really shit, or he's trying to make a point.  Either way its a slight concern

Ancelotti at Everton did it sometimes, no idea how many. This is his reason at the time. West Ham, Leicester and Man Utd have also done it. Too lazy to check for reasons why though.

Quote
Ancelotti has now provided some explanation behind that, explaining how three shot-stoppers can be useful.

The boss told Sky Sports: "It's good to give Joao [Virginia] some matchday experience.

"It's also helpful I find to have two goalkeepers for the warm-ups.

Imagine being able to use two or three goalkeepers simultaneously. However, this would mean only 8 outfield players, the one goal keeper allowed rule works well.

For example, if a team decides to substitute a keeper for an outfield player, what they gain in defending the goal they lose out on the outfield as there are less players in the outfield than they would have.
This is more reflective thought than suggestive.

This new guy Leicester have signed is very quick and he plays on the right so that will be key battle on top of midfield battle.

Yes his statement clearly was intended to appear as a bluff but is in fact genuine that he wanted Digne in for this as tactically he is more suited to this game.
Also there's a chance Digne could take the penalty.

Imagine the idea to attack the holte is to get ahead and have a good start. It's interesting psychology by Emery.

Buendia frustrates me way he can get in the way of things or loses ball and get threatened in trainisiton.

The transition of moving us from a lump it long all the time and giving it away constantly team to passing from the back effectively is going to have moments of utter shit. Along with coaching better players who are comfortable doing it will help. Man City weren’t always as good as they are now.

Mings fast asleep for their second.

I don't think that's fair, he cleared the ball before and then pushed out, exactly as every defender will be trained. The problem is you'd normally have the full back come in but Digne got himself a bit lost and ended up doing nothing.

and fuck, can't fault anyone for the final pass and finish but got caught too easily in midfield again. Kamara hasn't had a good day so far.

How the hell we are losing that.

Though from 1-1 our response was really good.

Leicester just punished us for giving the ball away a few times.

One big issue we have is we take so many touches when we're approaching the penalty area, Bailey, Buendia and Luiz all guilty of this.

That slide rule pass for their third is how it should be done. Look up, see the run and play the pass through rather than trying to beat 2-3 players every single time.

More goals in this at least.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Leicester City Match Thread
Post by: Rigadon on February 04, 2023, 03:52:11 PM
Buendia has been good.  Kamara's worst game for Villa by a long way - at fault for 2 or their goals.

There's more goals in this game and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 4-4 or something daft.  Be nice to see Duran come on.

We still aren't able to pass through to the midfield. Our possession tends to be around the defenders, Kamara and Luiz. It means we try and knock it about at the back and I guess we're not really good enough to do that well.

I forgot Ramsay was playing there, but it's not like we give him anything to work with.

Hopefully a big, professional half from us to come.

I wouldn't say the second or third were playing from the back.

Second is just a fantastic cross and Digne is completely oblivious and dosen't tuck in when Ihenacho drifts off Mings.

Third is Kamara drifting towards the halfway line but ball gets nicked off him and then we're caught square.

Leicester have been coached to press like this for three years now, we've had three months.

Kamara must be replaced since he has been a total liability in possession of those goals.
No communication between Digne and Mings over the unmarked header.
It's disappointing since we are a much better team that half and were great moving forward.

Agreed, just need to clear our collective heads and go again. Buendia playing his best game in a Villa shirt? Luiz has been excellent too. Ollie was sharp for the goal. Played some great stuff at times but we have let the game turn into a basketball match.

Kamara had a shocker for two goals and isn't covering the counter attacks well enough either. More (a lot) needed from Ramsey/Bailey on that side. Digne is just so lightweight at left back. I'd nearly chance bringing on Cash at right back and switching Young over.

Leicester have better players than their league position suggests but fuck me that was awful to concede three at home to them in one half. We have to get back on level terms at minimum ASAP.

Boubs, even with the two clangers, he's too important to us to drop. He's not been bad, just unlucky and a bit too casual. Light the fire under him and the team and lets get at them.

Nothing about Kamara’s mistakes was unlucky, it was just shit play.

by 505/50 I mean ones that tyou'll sometimes see a ref give and sometimes not.

What frustrates me is the ref just (a few mins ago) pinged Iheanacho for clipping konsa 's heels but I don't see that as any different to the contact on Kamara before their 3rd. It's the inconsistency with that that annoys me more than the one-eyed/biased decisions.

Who was offisde for the disallowed one? Did the ball back in from the edge of the box hit a Villa player because if it didn't I'm not sure what he's given it for.

Moreno, but the ball deflected off a defender. I don’t know the rules anymore.

This squad is good enough for 11th at best. It’s only ever been good enough for 11th. Not strengthening was a dereliction of duty.

On the replay I saw, all the Villa players were offside when Coutinho got his shot off on the edge of the box.

Yes but none of them interfered with play so shouldn't have been given, that's why I was asking because I think that's what it was given for as well.

I'd like another look because he looked fine to me.

I am so frustrated by this performance today.

We have dominated but effectively have made 4 simple, elementary, rudimentary defensive cock ups which been exploited.

Simply - our defence was not good enough today. Full stop. We should not be conceding 4 at home, especially when we have led twice.

Very very frustrating.

We piss around, as we always seem to do, with a million and one excuses and the next game we miss chance after chance, defend like chuckle brothers and get hammered by crisp wankers. We move as a club at glacially slow that's why it's two steps forward and two steps backwards.

If Kamara is injured or has a bad game we don't really have anything else.

But it's just been weird. The actual play, the run of the game, the working of the space etc, we've been brilliant. Then we actually get to either end and we've looked like Buster Keaton in zero gravity.
