The undroppable McGinn keeps his place. Returns for Mings, JJ, Buendia and Bailey. No place for Ings, Luiz or Coutinho

Think Chambers and Luiz should have kept there place tbh

Its Luiz for McGinn and maybe Ings for Watkins and Chambers for Konsa away from being perfect for me.

The Arsenal team that will beat us tonight is Ramsdale, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Tierney, Sambi Lokonga, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus.

I'd feel a lot more confident of going from 30% possession to 40% possession if Luiz started over McGinn. Look for more hesitation and hopeful, looping balls over the top from our Scottish jester.

I think this looks like a team with more energy than Sundays eleven. As for McGinn I'm not in the camp of writing him off but I really do think it would have been a good idea to take him out of the firing line for this one even if it means inventing a "tight hamstring" It it what it is though now and let's pray for a return to the arse out little bulldog that we all know and love.
Title: Re: Arsenal vs Aston Villa match thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on August 31, 2022, 06:42:13 PM
And fucking watch. JJ will be stuck on the left side of midfield with no room to operate. McGinn all left foot will be on the right. We will still employ poor crossing, overlapping FB’s who will constantly exposed on the break.

Chambers should be starting. Better passer than Konsa and can step forward with the ball.

Chambers was one of our better performers on Sunday and deserves a place alongside Mings. The same can said of Luiz but he might be off tomorrow. Buendia for Coutinho is a potential improvement though.

How did Konsa keep his place over Chambers?
Luis was far from perfect but we looked overrun in midfield when JJ came on for him.
Our back up left back must be properly shit .

But happy with the front three , I'd have gone into full on rant mode if he'd played his bessy mate again from the start.

I just don’t understand - McGinn and Konsa are bang out of form yet here we go again. Kamara looks so much better when he has Luiz alongside - yet he picks Ramsey who by nature what’s to surge forward leaving holes in CM.

Dumbfounded.

If I were Arteta looking at that, I know exactly what I’d tell my players to do, and that’s exactly what they will do.

If you’re Luiz why would ever sign a new contract to stay with us? He is better than McGinn but can’t get a start. It’s utterly stupid

4132?

Could do your fruit in trying to think about it. I'm going to say it's 451, and then see where everybody ends up after 5 minutes.

Btw, I've just come up with a brilliant idea involving fullbacks. So brilliant that I've had to invent a new position to describe them. And I've only had two pints.

They'll be changes again probably Wednesday

I think very good idea to play Bailey and Buendía that can get at the back four of Arsenal. Good to see Ramsey in

Its Luiz for McGinn and maybe Ings for Watkins and Chambers for Konsa away from being perfect for me.

Agree on Luiz and Chambers, Watkins gives us more energy than Ings and is a better choice to press hard for an hour, then Ings can come on later.

I would have started Chambers, but Konsa played OK in the last match as well. Mings and Konsa have more experience playing as a partnership so I can see the sense in letting him find some form.

Think Luiz is on the way out, hence not playing, but would have played him ahead of McGinn. Also would not have started Ramsey.

Have a feeling we may get something from this one though.

The midfield we have aren’t top half players. They’ve proven it for a few seasons now apart from a few months under Smith, Kamara apart.
They won’t suddenly turn into world beaters under a new manager, only quality additions will do that. As someone said earlier, it’s a recruitment issue.

Konsa has been very good, Mings and Kamara solid. McGinn trying very hard.

I actually think the players are working hard and trying,

The thing is, we're that bit slower than Arsenal. Not just pace, but that touch slower reacting, that touch slower anticipating, releasing a pass, making a run, everywhere. And while they have good player in form, that slowness is coaching. Nothing seems instinctive with us.

The thing about Buendia is he can play the part in a proper midfield.. we don't have one. He looks left and McGinn is behind him, he looks right and Cash is pinned back and Bailey is isolated, he looks forward and Ollie is doing god knows what off the ball.

Could be 5. This is the masterplan though. Second half, Douglas comes on and Archer, and we turn it around and then hit a winner because Arsenal will be having an open top bus parade at half time thinking they've won the fucking league now.

Or...they'll just batter us and pull an Arsenal against someone else (probably). We're too Villa at the moment to allow them to be Arsenal.

So... they're quicker, bigger, stronger, better footballers.
We play, as we have for probably 90% of the past 11-12 years, hand grenade football. Our players get the ball and then look like they've just been rolled an unpinned grenade. They fluster, kick it out as hurriedly as possible in any hopeful direction, but almost exclusively to the opposition. Repeat for 90 minutes, with the exception of 5 counters which seem to come off. We've had about 2 of those already, maybe 3.

Everyone bar Bailey has looked hopelessly lacking in composure on the ball. Body language is dreadful. Organisation is non-existent. We're leaving enormous gaps at the back. The mid-three don't know who to mark or pick up. Mings and Konsa look like Emile Heskey doing Dancing on Ice in lop-sided ice skates. I think their plan is to just dive to the floor wherever possible and hope they block something.

I feel for Martinez because he's getting no protection and he can see that his defence hasn't got a clue. He's pulled off a worldie save to keep the score down, but he's starting to get bombarded and his six yard area has been chaotic.

Other than that we're fine.

Can't do fucking simple things

It's because we do not have a system to the way we play. The attacking players have to ad hoc decide how to create chances, where to run, so the extra load of this decision process leads to technical errors or means we play just that tick too slow. We need patterns to be drilled into players so it becomes instinctive.

The most used term over the last few seasons is “we were outmuscled in midfield.” I just don’t understand why this hasn’t been addressed. Yes, we’ve brought Kamara in but he can’t do it on his own. Teams are still cutting through us like knife through butter.

Their second is all down to Cash again and again jumping around like ten meters away from "his man" his got this habit for a long time now IMO- but doesnt matter much as the team as such isnt good enough right now IMO :( Cash also hinder our offensive IMO as we more often than not loose the ball when he finally try to do something. As comes trough in my opinions I have kind of given up on this for now - sorry but cant help it.

They tried but way short I’m afraid. I hate saying a manager should go and I’m sure Gerrard is giving his all but it’s not good enough. We either keep him and pull out 2/3 wonder signings or he goes. We haven’t got time to give him time due to the start we’ve had so unless there’s some amazing news tomorrow then this should be it for him.

It didn't ping of his shin, he patted it out with both hands.

Gerrard is undoubtedly making some major mistakes here and the recruiting looks well short but some of these players need calling out too. Watkins, Cash, Digne, Ramsey, McGinn all well short but above all Martinez. Fuck me.

We were shown up for what we are, disjointed, clueless going forward and chasing shadows all game. The owners have to act, the look on Gerards face after they scored their second said it all. Mings tried hard all game but yet again the midfield was totally dominated. Where do we go from here?

I have sympathy with the away fans. Imagine watching that tonight - utter shite, you score, you can't celebrate it because you think VARS gonna chalk it off and then literally three minutes later we are behind again. And now its a long journey home. My hat goes off to them.
