Title: Brisbane Roar vs Aston Villa pre season friendly thread - Wed 10.45am
Post by: Toronto Villa on July 18, 2022, 03:36:52 PM
Game is Wednesday - 5.45am my time, so 10.45am in the UK. Expecting quite a few changes and a number of the kids to be involved. Hoping Cam leads the line and we get to see Tim and a few others get a good run out. Also Emi in goal and Bert on the wing. Will be interest to gauge Konsa’s fitness and sharpness in his first game back. And maybe even a debut for our Ludwig.

Edited to correct date of game.

It’s going to be minus 1 in Melbourne overnight. I never signed up for this. I could have stayed in Brum if I wanted to freeze. Thank funk we have one of the few houses in Australia with double glazing.

My niece (originally from Bolton) is over from Sydney at the moment. She's always moaning about the build quality of Aussie houses. Absolute shite is how she describes it, and freezing in the winter.

Few southern hemisphere housing is designed for Winter
Winter happens and despite global warming, June July and to an extent August can be F*****g cold, warmer in the sun outside than in the house.
Good incentive to be out and about

Bit of a shame that the game is on when I'm in the office. Have we ever played an Australian team before?

Tend to like Brisbane teams (in Aussie Rules and Rugby League), as theg always seem to play in claret and blue.

Not here in the NZ south island mate. I have a double glazed and very well insulated home. Don't often need heating as it has a lot of glass so even on a cold day the sun warms the house. It was -5c when I left NZ to go to Brisbane early Saturday morning.

Chambers starts again after 72 mins against Leeds.  Understandable as Konsa coming backk from injury.  but I did think he may try Mings and Carlos together.  I wonder if Gerrard now sees us as Chambers / Konsa left & Mings / Carlos right?

We’ve started well but now Brisbane have pretty much had the ball for about 2 minutes straight. The top teams would never have allowed that. They’d have won it back much quicker. Against a team like this in a friendly doesn’t matter too much but it will in the PL.

We have too many wingers in a squad where I don’t think the manager really wants to play with wingers. But until he is able to sell them we are trying to shoehorn them in.

I'm talking rubbish as usual! Somehow I got a link to the game, or so it seemed. It certainly said it was the game this thread is about, but as I said, it seemed to be showing highlights so I thought I had just read the time wrong. Quite why I thought it was a good idea to post the 'scores' I don't know. Senior moment? No idea what I was watching - maybe someone does computer simulations of games and puts them on youtube as if they are the real thing? I don't know. Sorry if people were annoyed, offended or whatever. I'll go and sit in a quiet corner.

Kamara just controlled the ball on his chest on the edge of his own box, played a 1-2 and came out with the ball under no pressure. He does look like he has so much time on the ball, fully in control. He looks great.

If Traore and Bailey want to have some serious game time this season, they need to do a lot more than get the ball and pass it back to Digne or Cash.

Two wingers and two wing backs doesn’t work. Way too congested in those areas of the pitch and we are being left light in numbers in the middle in attack and defence

The problem with this shape is that we're getting loads of crosses in but only have 1 player in the box against 2-3 defenders. If this is any indication of what he wants to do this season we need a different striker because Ings just doesn't work as the sole striker when the support players are staying wide.

It might if those wingers try to beat their man a bit more. It’s all a bit safety first and that against a third division standard of opposition.

Bailey and Traore played very narrow at times and drifted wide as needs be.  Just because we haven't lit it up doesn't mean the system can't work.

Jota or Mane and Salah aren’t wingers. More traditional forwards who play either side of the central striker. And they are so much better than what we have.

I'm sure I remember reading that we've taken 35 players on the tour with us - I'm guessing because it's about the pre-season training as much as the games themselves, so even players who aren't going to get many minutes (if any) have gone out there for the training. Even if we change every player at half-time, that's a whole other 11 and three subs STILL not getting a game.

Different set up in that we have two more traditional midfielders who are playing a little wider. They are not getting in the way of the full backs. We look more compact. Also two forwards, Watkins in a more reserved role allowing Cam to have central position. It’s good to try different things in pre season

The final angle of that makes it even more impressive.  Ollie get a faint touch which changes the direction of the ball just in front of him, and he still controls it instantly and gets the quick shot away.  Very good finish.

Feel sorry for the chap Digne caught, that looked nasty and I think if the ref sees that properly he'd have been off. It looked like a bite from 28 Days Later.

Maybe. But the best strikers in the world are also quite focused on scoring. It would be great if he adds the extra dimension of finding others in open space, but we need natural scorers and he is making that argument he is the best at club right now

Archer looks like he could be a really good player but we can't rely on him just yet to be our main striker. With Watkins and Ings struggling to find the net last season and not really showing any other qualities in this pre campaign then I think a BIG decision has to be made very soon.

I would sell either of the two for a healthy sum of money and then replace them with either Suarez or somebody else.

Ideally with age on his side I would move Ings on if anybody would take him for the fee we paid ?

We have so many players that we will struggle to get rid of you really start to notice just how much money we have wasted over the years

From what I saw (whilst trying to work at the same time), the first half was a bit drab. Bert seemed to slow the play down whenever he received the ball. Second half was much better. Well worked goal and some nice play. Archer should have had a couple and maybe should have passed for the other  but that's ok, he's still learning. I really like the look of Kesler Hayden but I wonder if it's a season too soon for him?

On this showing KKH is an upgrade on Cash.

He's looked very good, hasn't he?  I suspect he's playing himself into a squad place for this season, rather than another loan.  Not really being tested defensively though, obviously.
I've rated KKH for a while now.  Would definitely like to see him in the squad next season.  It's a bit early to be saying he's better than Cash just yet though.

Who needs to be moved on that we've wasted money on?

Sanson is a confusing one but will most likely find a French club for a similar fee.

Traore - definitely looks like a waste of cash.

Ings - I'm holding judgement for now

El ghazi will go but has been a pretty decent getting us out of the championship.

Freddy - if he goes we won't have lost money on him.

Let Freddy run down his contract and KHH go on loan for a season in the championship (or Forest to replace Spence).  He’d come back a better player than playing the odd match/minutes for us as understudy to Cash.

Roar play in Brisbane. There was a short-lived ‘franchise’ in Townsville called the North Queensland Fury. They were managed by Robbie Fowler. I didn’t go well because it’s so far from anywhere and it’s rusted on egg chasing country. And they were shit.

Doug Luiz has looked good tonight. Good link up play and some good passes.
Played a crucial role in the goal with the dummy and then dragging a defender wide. We know he can do this stuff if they don't put valium in his tea.

I know it’s still early days but I thought it was largely the same disjointed crap interspersed with the occasional good move that we saw last season.  Still not convinced with Gerrard.  Definitely need a new striker unless Cameron is given a chance and hits the ground running.  A lot to ask of him.

Agree that being disjointed IN ATTACK might be a worry under the new regime. Under Gerrard havnet seen patterns of making attack that much? Do we relay on individuals like Phil and are in need of a new striker that can make goal on his own because of this? We do look increasingly solid defensively and as they say good teams start with solid defence. Hopefully the next step in building this team will take care of building patterns of attacking moves. Fx mc Allister known for the passing game, wasnt he?

I think Cam could end up our main striker sooner than later. Watching him last night he was dropping deep to get involved make space and then getting into good positions to get chances on goal. He looks like a very intelligent player and already looks like he is as good as if not a better finisher than Ings and Watkins.
Unless we sign an out and out goal scorer for the season (such as Suarez), I reckon Cam will be our main striker by the end of the upcoming season.

It was Eamonn, didn't get to bed until midnight and still trying to recover from my trip to Brisbane. Off again on another trip to Auckland tomorrow for a gig.

That's superb.

The Bell End by Belbroughton is just a couple of miles from Lickey End...
