Since the first half at Watford our performances have improved (how could they not), and we’ve scored 10 goals without conceding any. But that’s not really how it works. Brentford had a super start to the season vs Arsenal and remain unbeaten after a draw at Palace and a win in the cup. This won’t be easy at all as they still have that newly promoted club bounce about them. But this is the Dean Smith derby and it will mean a lot to him for us to put on a great showing and get a win. It’s really a game we need to win if we are to compete at the upper portion of the table.
I’ll go for another 2-0 with Ollie scoring against his former club, and Ings carrying on where he left off.
-
Really hope we can get Watkins and Bailey back on the bench for this one.
-
I think will be a tough game: 1-1 draw.
-
Stone me! Thursday already?
Anyway, much depends on the fitness of the injured players whose presence could be the difference. Either way I expect a bit of a mad one for some reason, as much as last week seemed dark at times, down to the weather more than anything, Saturday will be much lighter and I expect an entertaining ding dong.

I hate these ******. They'll play like 1954 Hungary, 1970 Brazil and all the Barcelonas combined, as usual, then lie down next time I want them to win.
-
Though I suppose they did beat Arsenal, which was funny. If they could do the decent thing and start losing to us I might be able to forgive them. Eventually.
-
I'd have expected their fans to be more confident .

2-0 villa, but whereas last week against Newcastle was relatively comfortable, I expect this to be far more of a test. Maybe an early goal, followed by a tough match and a late clincher.
-
They like to play rather than what we faced last week. I think this could be a close one, but fingers crossed for a repeat of the scoreline from my first ever match at Villa Park. 4-1.
-
think we'll pinch it near the end. 1-0
-
I don't suppose any of our walking wounded are close to a return?

Bold bit is important, i think it will help us look more fluent.
-
They haven't conceded yet which is impressive but will change on Saturday. Think it will be tight but we'll just nick it.
2-1 Villa.

I'm going for a Villa 2-1 win.

I've heard that Ollie's bruise has turned from black and purple, to a bit more violet and yellow/green around the edges, so he'll hopefully be back next October.

Oh, and Bailey will hopefully play a match for us before his contract expires.
I see that Mr Shinsplints seems to have got over his mystery injury all is a sudden!!

Really looking forward to this game.
Going to be entertaining I think.
3-1 to us.

Bailey, Ollie and Sanson in contention I hear.

Routine 2-1 win. We get the first two, they make it interesting near the end with a scabby goal. Ings to continue with his scoring streak.

Big league reality check for Brentford I think. Did very well v Arsenal but they won't be able to bully our team like that. Score first and we'll win. 2-0.

Haven’t these fuckers got a hex on us ?
Time to put it to bed once and for all, and shove it up their managers arse, the smug fucker.
-
Gone for a draw. We always seem to stumble against the Bees.
-
I think they’re a bit better than some of us realise and of course they’ve got the newly promoted club energy still. So it’s a 1-1 for me

No wins for them ever at ours, though. And we've now got the manager behind two-thirds of all of their all-time victories. Top flight record, we're P6 W5 D1 L0 F20 A7.
Three-none us. Konsa, Watkins, one of the kids, probably JPB. Martinez bored.

I used to hate it when they played at our place in the championship and danced effortlessly around us like invaders from Planet Football as we struggled with BruceBall.

I even remember the 0-0 at VP under Bruce where they battered us. They should have scored 5, but at the time, it was seen as another point towards getting there or thereabouts.
-
The last meeting at Villa Park, we were much the better team, but still needed a late equaliser.
-
Does anyone know if the South Aston United Reformed Church car park is open this season? I could not make the last match and wanted to check before heading up. Apologies, as not sure best place to ask this.

Bailey, Sanson and Traore out. Watkins training today but sounds unlikely. Some rumours about McGinn floating about that he's out, which are the way the Bailey ones started last week. Smith didn't mention Bailey last week pre game, so just because he has not said he's out, he still could be.
-
hah, if Mcginn is out as well, its past the barebones stage and into the bone marrow.
-
Good to see Bailey has settled into the Greasy role almost seamlessly.

The last meeting at Villa Park, we were much the better team, but still needed a late equaliser.
Watkins made a mug of Hutton the same game?
-
So it could be a midfield of Nakamba, Luiz and Ramsey? Goodness.
-
If mcginns out chuk starts for me
-
If mcginns out chuk starts for me
Ramsey and Carney with just Luiz for protection against one of the most aggressive sides in the league? In the year when they've relaxed the tackling rules?
-
If McGinn was out, would they have risked Marvelous for ninety minutes in the week? That's what I'm clinging to.
Then again, this is Villa. Any shite injury/illness rumour is always true.
-
Shock, horror, DS confirms injured players may make an appearance after the international break. Don’t hold your breath as we all know how this ends up….unless they’re to Man.City of course when miraculous recoveries are made. Shin splints, what shin splints??
-
Looking forward to it. First game since Jan 2020 and last minute winner v Watford so will spend next 24 hours calculating how many days that's been (or just take 20 seconds to work it out on Google).
Get the feeling it will be one of those bad first half and 2 down before we come roaring back in second half type games. Can see it being 2-2 with us having chances to win it.
Ollie on the bench would be a big help for that.
One issue is we've been really slow at getting into games so far. Enough said about Watford but we were poor first 25 minutes v Newcastle and lucky not to be one down before we got into it. Really can't afford that tomorrow as Brentford are full of confidence and not conceded a goal yet.
For me it's just a day to be enjoyed given I didn't go last week so hopefully performance is alright.
-
McGinn covid rumour floating around given there were about 16 positive tests in the prem this week. See if he gets pulled out of Scotland squad shortly.
Ramsey played well enough last weekend and think Luiz will do well in more advanced role with a sitter behind him so think midfield just depends on what side of the bed Nakamba gets out of as he dosen't half put in some random performances if he has a run of starts.

There's two tickets on the website for Brentford if anyone is after one.
-
I am really getting f***** off with our injury situation. The season is two games old. How can we have so many injuries? What are they doing?
-
Me too its an unfunny joke - what exactly is wrong with Bailey? Not o mention Sansom.
-
I think, apart from Sansom who seems to be cursed, a lot of the injuries are for players who were on some kind of international duty over
the Summer. Annoying but predictable.
-
We have an excellent league record against this lot in the top division.
P 6 W 5 D 1 L 0 F 20 A 7
OK Pongo Waring scored the winner in the first and Trevor Ford in the last but nonetheless.

We're talking about bruised knees and hamstring strains.. not ruptured tenders. GTFO there.
-
We could have Messi, Ronaldo etc and would still struggle against these. If we win it will be tight. Expecting a draw hoping for a goal fest in our favour
-
Richard, I know what you are saying about international duties but, players from other clubs hit the ground running from last weekend!! Our training ground has obviously been cursed by the Blues’ gypsies!!
-
No pics of SJM training. You can normally guarantee at least one of him with a big grin on his chops.
So I’m going to assume he’s out tomorrow as well. He’ll be a huge miss.
-
A few more tickets available on the official site now if anyone’s interested.

McGinn out just highlights the need for a new CM. How anyone at the club can’t see this is beyond worrying. Nakamba, Luiz and Ramsey is a bottom 3 midfield

I don't agree with that. Nakamba isn't top half material but he played well enough to help best Spurs and Chelsea. Luiz is a Brazilian international. Ramsey, if the last two appearances are anything to go by, looks perfectly at home in the division. It's not a relegation midfield - it's just not at all top 6.

I’d argue that those couple of Nakamba performances were the exception to the rule. Reason he’s failed to establish himself in the starting 11 at any point over last two seasons - don’t think he’s anywhere near good enough.
We needed that DM upgrade to then have the likes of McGinn, Luiz, Sanson, Ramsey to all play alongside
-
Being not good enough for top half doesn't mean relegation. In the right system he could be basically fine for staying up. It's just we've been told we have bigger ideas than that.
-
The problem with all 3 is their ball retention. It is what it is though. We have lost the player that could play forward passes that no one else could see and that element we have not replaced. If mcginn is out tomorrow it will be interesting to see how we play.
-
I'd be tempted to start Bidace. He's got something about him. Lively. Picks a pass. Beundia doesn't quite look sharp enough yet. He might benefit from the break.
Archer deserves a place on the bench.

There's no chance Buendia's going to get dropped, it would make everybody associated with the transfer look a proper charlie.
-
I would also suggest that Buendia is only going to get sharper by playing.
-
Actually looking forward to Luiz in slightly more advanced midfield role, he plays there for Brazil and also come on v Spurs late last season and played really well on the counter attack, keeping the ball and making the right decision when to pass.
Think he'll surprise a few if he's played as an 8 tomorrow.

If Twitter rumour is to be believed then Ramsey, McGinn and Young are out with Covid and Mings is injured
-
If that's true Vinnie, I can honestly say that I have never looked more forward to an international break than this one because that potential side is a relegation candidate. Bailey, Sanson, Watkins can't get back quick enough.
-
Others are saying its not true, but Villa rumours appear to have a rule lately. If its shit, its true.

So much bullshit posted day before games these days. I’ve not heard from my contact anything at all on it (I’ve not asked either)
-
If they can spirit a top midfielder before the window closes that would be nice.
If it does come turn out to be true re those out, there are some seriously leaky holes at VP.
-
Don’t use Twitter, till 2pm tomorrow then
-
In his presser DS said if Ollie comes through the next training session OK, he’ll be available for selection. Bailey and Bert expected to be fit after the international break and Davis 3-4 weeks before being able to train.
Also denied any further transfers coming in
-
Twitter rumours? Butter Ullshit as usual. Wait until 2pm tomorrow.

Twitter rumours? Butter Ullshit as usual. Wait until 2pm tomorrow.
Except re team news they have been right first couple of games. Normally I'm with you, and they are just a good talking point, but too many times, including about a certain shin, the bad news has leaked through odd twitter rumours before anywhere reliable.
And as ever, provide a discussion point.
-
McGinn is currently selected in my FF team, so I think we can assume he's injured. I was thinking of taking one for the team and dropping him to the bench so he can play and get a goal and an assist.
-
If it was to be just McGinn there maybe something in it, but if it is all those players Vinne mentioned being in the Twitter rumours, I can’t see Smith not saying something, get some excuses in early. Not having a go at Smith, I just think if any manager was going to be down 4 first teamers on top of 2 or 3 others already being out, they wouldn’t hush it up but would make something of it, so the world knew what they are up against.
-

It's the only decent thing to do.
I've left Toney in my team so he won't score.
-
He did comment that he's happy with the depth but not the health of his squad yesterday. Maybe there was more to that than the 3-4 we know about.
-
If we are as depleted as the rumours suggest we'll do well to win this I think

heh. Same here. I also have Ings up front. *awaits the inevitable injury in the warm-up*
-
We’re finally going to beat these, Ings again and Buendía to score his first.
-
A difficult game with a depleted team. We just need to get our squad fit for after the international break. With the crap pre season means the season starts then. A win today is a huge bonus. Hopefully a decent atmosphere and Buendia to step up.
-
So who’s missing? Watkins, McGinn, Bailey, Sansom, Traore, Trez and Davis. Anyone else?
-
Add Jacob Ramsey and Mings, according to rumours.
-
Guessing it's going to be something like this then:
Martinez
Cash Konsa Hause Young
Nakamba Luiz
Buendia Chuk El Ghazi
Ings
A Nakamba and Luiz partnership gives me horrible 'Nam style flashbacks to our Premier League season.
-
Stas, Richards, Lescott and Kozak.
-
Add Jacob Ramsey and Mings, according to rumours.
I thought both of those had England calls up?
-
And McGinn has had a Scotland call up. Hasn't stopped rumours.
-
Ok maybe, it’s just bollocks then.
-
And McGinn has had a Scotland call up. Hasn't stopped rumours.
It's up to the clubs when they pull them out I suppose, so if Smith was trying to play his cards close to his chest, he's hardly going to do it before this weekend. All clubs will surely decide who stays and goes to join up with England/Scotland after this weekend, surely?
-
None of the England/Scotland opponents are on the red list as far as I know, so I don't think clubs have any entitlement to refuse them going.
With McGinn, the rumour going around is that he would be unavailable for Scotland's first game but available again for their second and third.
He is so vital to the Scotland squad that I imagine they'd be happy to name him in the squad and take a chance that he was fit enough to join them for the latter matches. I'm not sure Mings is so vital to the England squad that Southgate would do the same.
-
If those rumours are true I'd play Conor rather than Chuck. Maximise the experience and improve our chances of nicking a set-piece goal. Bring on Carney if we're chasing the game, sure, but with an injury list that looks like that I'd forgive Dean for going safety first, second and third today.
-
Chuck is old enough, I reckon. Get him in. Bellingham is the same age and playing every week in Bundesliga. Play him further forward with Luiz and Nakamba behind and it isn't too high risk. We won plenty of games last season with Barkley doing an invisible man impression in the same spot. Alternatively, leave Buendia in the "Barkley" spot, bung JPB out wide.
-
I'd be really excited to see Chucky in there, I think he's a superstar in the making. I just mean that I'd understand if, with half the team in hospital, Smith felt more than a bit cautious.
-
Conor.
Safety first.
There's three words not often seen in close proximity.
-
Well he’s not been afraid to play Ramsey so it wouldn’t surprise me to see either Chuck or JPB in contention for a start.
-
Only commentary available again for the game on Villa TV
Same as watford
Only game from premier not on TV here, have we become camera shy ?
-
Where's "here"? They're banned from showing 3pm games live in the UK. There was an exception when crowds were banned as they had no other way of seeing the games. Now crowds are back, no 3pm games will be shown this season except for, maybe, the Scottish Cup Final.
Edit: he's not in the UK. Ignore this post.
-
Play the kids Deano.
-
Radio 5 Live commentary today. Big improvement on the two guys muttering to each other as if they're in their front room with the match on in the background (Villa TV - which we pay for!)
-
Rumour now is both Ramseys, McGinn and Mings out. First 3 with covid and Mings with the rib issue from last week. Oh and still no Watkins. Do well to get a result of true.
-
About 20 minutes until team news…if those rumours are true then I doubt we’ll be getting a result today. Hopefully the rumours are wrong…and hope I’m wrong if not.

Ollie is in his pre-match day kit on SSN so that’s a bit more promising.
