Title: Aston Villa v Leicester City Match Thread

An even tougher afternoon ahead now but one we need to find a way to win against a very good side. Great sides need to be versatile to win games. Chance for others to step now. Disappointed that Sanson doesn't get a start. AEG comes in.

I must admit I’m a bit disappointed we have not tried something a bit different with the formation. We do have players at our disposal to do so.

He had a fantastic December and was dropped as soon as St Ross came back. Since then, one disappointing half against West Ham when the whole team played poor yet El Ghazi was the one hooked at half time. There's far less-deserving of a start in our team than him.

Lunacy to start RB and Traore ahead of Sanson and Jacob.

He just handed the midfield to LC. Horrible decision

Going to be a long 90 minutes I suspect. Huge amount of work for Doug and SJM to get through and also make sure we get enough of the ball to the 3 behind Ollie.

Perhaps Bert and Barkley will drop deep aswell and we'll have just AEG up with the striker but I'm not sure and Elmohamady won't half be exposed in this formation which is another headache.

Think AEG just had a purple patch of form, he was as poor as the rest v West Ham.

Still he'll be on the penalty if we get one first half.

I’m not sure Barkley is undroppable, but once Grealish was injured, there was no way Smith was taking Traore or Barkley out of the team. I’m only surprised El Ghazi is in instead of Trez. Elmo really won’t have much protection from Traore. Let’s hope that we have the Xmas time El Ghazi rather than the bizarre first half against West Ham.

Got a real bad feeling about this game today..I felt nervous before with the hope that Jack would be fit. Without him I think we’re gonna struggle against this Leicester side.
I’m another who is disappointed that Sanson hasn’t got the nod over Barkley, something strange going on there. Anyway, let’s hope I’m wrong about being nervy.

I'd love to know what's going on with him. First we had his never ending injury, which as usual we were given fuck all details about. Now we have him hopping from the subs bench to sitting at home on alternate weekends.

I would have had Trez on the right to offer cover for Elmo and have Sanson in the middle instead of Barkley as one of two 8's, with McGinn, so that we could compete physically.

It's a brave selection and one I think will see us getting dominated.

4-1 Leicester

I’m not going to be all doom and gloom if we lose, if we lose then we’ve lost  to a decent side. I watched Leicester vs Wolves the other week and they were quite average. We are still having a decent season and no one would have predicted our current position and points haul way back when we kicked off the season vs Sheffield United. We aren’t the soft touch we were last season and we will still have 15-16 games left after today.

Agreed on that, I've no problem with AEG coming in for Jack on the left but no way should both Traore and Barkley be selected against a team with the counter attacking power of Leicester.

Don’t get the doom and gloom on here. I get the feeling that Grealish has been carrying that injury  for a couple of games at least, because he’s been ineffective recently - last two especially.
Need the team to step up now - opportunity to see what they can do when the limelight’s not all on one player.
Let’s be honest, we’re safe. Who would have thought we’d be in this position with just over half the season gone. I thought we’d struggle to get anything today WITH Jack. Let’s just support the lads and see how we go.

Some of the comments on here show exactly why DS is head coach and we’re not. Barkley was a huge hit when he first played but now, having returned from injury after 2 months out, he’s the worst player in the history of football and should be no where near the team.

I have to say that I am disappointed Sanson is not starting. Surely he has been with us for long enough to be fit. The midfield has been very ineffective of late so i can't see how he is not worth a try when you have just shelled out £14m for him. If he cant get in now, why buy him in the first place?

Come on Villa. I think this is going to be one of those games where we have to weather it down for a bit first. And try not to give possession away like that...

6 games in 18 games having an impact with two fatigue related injuries to key players. Dean Smith came across as a bit of a Mike Bassett with his "players don't get fatigue" comments.

Anyway back to the game, good that Leicester expecting Jack to start have gone with two right backs. But they have started well.

I didn’t expect to win today. I’ll absolutely accept that but what I hate above all things is when we fall apart it’s utterly dreadful how fast it happens. And if you look at the displays of the last few weeks you could argue something like this has been coming. Last weekend was shit against a bottom feeder where we should have lost by a few. AEM should've done better there but look at the space they're getting centrally.

With Jack out it made it easier for DS to bring in Sanson or Nakamba and have a hardworking and deep central three and he's refused and the game is over within half an hour.

Make a change Dean.

In last few weeks he seems to have slipped back into his bad old ways, naive team selections, not using subs at right times and not wanting to drop players based on reputation.

Has Craig Shakespeare gone on holiday as seems he'd knocked some sense into DS with some good gameplans but it's gone a bit wrong on that front lately.

And if you look at the displays of the last few weeks you could argue something like this has been coming. Last weekend was shit against a bottom feeder where we should have lost by a few. We have been poor since the first half at Burnley and the points we have got since have been from a backs to the wall effort

AEM should've done better there but look at the space they're getting centrally.

With Jack out it made it easier for DS to bring in Sanson or Nakamba and have a hardworking and deep central three and he's refused and the game is over within half an hour.

The midfield has looked way off the pace since the enforced break.  Douglas Luiz has looked a shadow of the player he was earlier in the season, McGinn has looked laboured and Barkley has largely been a passenger.

3 subs for me. Leicester look ropey when the ball is played into the box.

Barkely, Traore and El Ghazi off.

Watkins wide, Davis up top to try and drag some territory a bit higher up. Bring Trez on right to try and get Elmo forwards a little more for his delivery, which is about all he has left.

Sanson into midfield with McGinn to allow them both to press onto their midfield too.

Go direct, get set pieces, about our only hope. Flat, passive and insipid performance.

A long way from our worst out there I'd argue

Barks and Traore off, let's get a look at Ramsey and Sanson, shift McGinn to the right.

So many poor performances out there. Keeper should have saved both goals, midfield two providing no cover in front of CBs, the Elmo/Traore right side horror show. That complete charlatan Ross Barkley, hopefully one of his last appearances in a Villa shirt.

Grealish being out isn't responsible for our non existent midfield or poor defending.

Leicester have some very good attacking players and we've made it like a training exercise for them

We need to maybe try out Keinan Davies as striker with support for Watkins left side / wide support also bring Sanson into picture.
So Davies and Sanson on.
Really?!
We’re bad enough, without bringing on a ‘supposed’ striker who is proven to score about as many goals as our keeper!?

Exactly. Let’s face it, Keinan couldn’t hit the North Stand if he was standing in it, bless him.

Smith has undeniably got his lineup and tactics badly wrong, but i'm not sure you can give a pass to players who are strolling around, not bothering to track back, not bothering to close down and continually making basic errors.

We don't have 11 men out of possession and McGinn is 1 man against 2, so we leave space. Add in that passive element, especially from Elmo and its poor stuff.

Definitely think we could do with having a lump up there, as corners have where we have caused problems.

I think Sky are making far too much of Grealish here. This is Brighton all over again, only Brighton are an awful side and incapable of punishing you.

Can Sky stop trying to blame the lack of Jack? More to it than that.

You can't be without one player and then have the right to collapse.

Leicester are better than us at the moment. It is no shame to lose to them.

However the lack of competitiveness, the lack of midfield shape, the lack of organisation, of energy, of desire.

There's no excuse for that.

Dean just has got to look at how he sets us up. There is nothing wrong in being cautious, in having a strong organised midfield. In making the opposition work for every chance.

She's right, we have been conceding far too many shots against us in recent weeks.

It's not about a lack of cover, it's that the lack of pressing higher up the pitch means teams can play it around with too much time to pick gaps. Add to that us trying to not have too many players behind the bal land it's a perfect storm for them to boss us. It's been the same problem for a few games and it's why Barkley has been the target of a lot of complaints, if he's going to stay up the pitch then he needs to scare teams into keeping players deep to cover him and he's just not doing it.

All that said, great goal, where was Barkley though?

Would love to see someone in midfield be first to the ball.

As for Ross, he’s best in the last 15 minutes apparently, so hold on to your hats.

Poor performance how long can the 3 in the middle of the park keep getting picked? They are all running on empty picked up second half especially with the subs.Against a energetic Leeds side 2 out of 3 must  be changed.Positive today Matt Targett was another good performance & our best player.
