Title: Aston Villa v Burnley Pre Match Thread - Thursday 6pm.
Post by: kippaxvilla2 on December 14, 2020, 08:16:02 AM
No use winning at Wolves if we can’t do these.  Niggly, horrible side to play against.  We should have enough although I’m expecting it to be tight.  2-1 us.  Watkins and Grealish.

Going to be a difficult one I suspect. We know what they will do, sit their back four across their 18 yard box and try and hit Wood at every opportunity. In saying that, as poor as we were last season we still took four points off these. We will have had an extra days rest in the legs too. Kind of game we will be reliant on some Grealish magic to break the deadlock.

This made me snort-laugh - because it's exactly what I was thinking.

But can you imagine going into the Christmas period proper having beaten these and the Stripeyfilth?  Our January shopping list would start to look a whole lot different...

Interesting watching them against Arsenal, very high press with multiple bodies committed and it was only Arsenals utter inability with the ball when they beat the press to take advantage. However even when Burnley won the ball high up the pitch they seemed to lack any cutting edge and seemed clueless in how to punish Arsenal.

They’ll go long to Wood and Rodriguez and we need to deal with it.

Hopefully the villa goal gift fairy has died of Coronavirus. You know the little git, the one that gifts goals or wins to struggling sides when we play them.  Need to put Burnley to the sword and the Tesco bags as last Xmas villa ruined my holiday.

Other than set pieces, high lofted crosses and the odd break out of defence on the long hoof.
I know their current-season goalscoring is poor, but they have the capacity to hurt teams that don't defend set pieces very well.

Given how easy it is to pick up a booking these days - the five card ban rule needs looking at.  Time was when you got five bookings you were genuinely considered to be a dirty fecker.  Targett hardly fits that category.

Still tier 3.  Even if they reduce it to tier 2 this week, I can't see that that would leave enough time to organise which fans get to come in.

That midfield is far too open. We need Nakamba in there to sit/screen and compete with their physical pressence. Plus with McGinn in there, we match up with their central two and still create the pockets for Barkley and Jack to play in.
Title: Re: Aston Villa v Burnley Pre Match Thread - Thursday 6pm.

Need to go for the jugular from the off with these. The longer the game goes without us going in front, the more they’ll fancy their chances that one of their hoofs into box will come to something. Watched the first half of their game against Arsenal and Burnley were a bit wobbly for the first half an hour, but started gaining a bit of confidence and their high press on Arsenal passing it out of defence, started causing a bit of panic, so no fancy dan cruyff turns from Mings please! They have some very average players, but Wood and Rodriguez are half decent and Tarkowski and Mee will certainly try and rough Watkins up.
Saying that, we get an early goal, Grealish could take these to the cleaners. Would be tempted to put hourihane in, instead of Nakamba as he can pass better.

Tricky one - they are no mugs but clearly struggle. We need to be patient, don’t push too hard and allow ourselves to be picked off as we were against Southampton and Brighton.

A 1-0 scrappy win will be just fine, and I think we will

Yet another banana skin game at VP, think this will be 1-1.

Will go for 2-1 win if Barkley is fit though. We'll dominate possesion so having him back would be much needed and think he scored a few against them in recent seasons playing for Chelsea.

Don't think Burnley are much of a team that will press and pick us off. They'll just lump long diagonals all night long to the two CFs and try to get a goal from set piece or lofted cross as they did (twice) at VP last season so we need to be strong there so don't mind AEM coming in at RB.

Not sure what our midfield will look like.

This is the type of game where we need to up the quality and really put them to bed.

A win here puts us well out of reach of the relegation fodder for several weeks, relieves any lingering doubts and sets us up nicely for the Christmas period

I'd like to see us bring back George Curtis. Andy Lochead and Peter Withe and put them all on Ben Mee. Let him try his scissor tackle knee bollocker on them.

Should be as close to a  "routine home win" as you can get, but nothing seems to be routine these days, especially for Villa at home.  1-0 but not sure which way.

Two things we need to turn round:

a) The rubbish home form
b) The incredibly frustrating habit of following up a good win against a decent team with a loss against one we'd expect to beat

Thursday would be a good time to do both.

These to me look like exactly the same cloggers they were last season. The only side we've lost to that are close to being as fucking rubbish as them is West Ham, and that result was a freakish one-off. We, on the other hand, are exponentially better than the last time we met. We barely play the same sport now. I can't see any other outcome than them waking up on Friday and giving serious consideration to changing their club colours, such will be the level of their humiliation.

Trez, Cash and Luiz all out tomorrow, Barkley probably touch and go to make it. Might be best advised to bring him in as a sub as the last thing we need is him out for weeks.

Going to be a very interesting team selection and we appear to be running out of players to put on the bench. Elmo for additional height against the Burnley aerial game but he won't last 90 mins. Nakamba for a bit more grunt in midfield. No Traore from the start but AEG will likely strongly test our patience. Don't think it's a game for Ramsey either but a good option to bring in.

-------------Martinez
Elmo, Konsa, Mings, Targett
-------McGinn, Nakamba
AEG, Barkley/Houri, Jack
------------Watkins

Bench, Steer, Traore, Guilbert, Ramsey, Hause, Davis, Taylor

Would then be sitting rather pretty in the league with games in hand.

Come on our Villa do this!!!!!

It sort of does, but I'm loving it while we can't go!  Had Amazon Prime on in the background all evening last night dipping in and out of the games and seeing what's going on, which was quite good to have.  Anyway, we'll f these f'ers!!

Think this will be tough. The favourites tag is a tricky one.

Bench, Steer, Traore, Guilbert, Ramsey, Hause, Davis, Taylor

id have Ramsey starting, with the enforced absences we’ve got. Did very well against Wolves (who contrived to beat Chelsea in their last match). He’ll be buzzing from the Wolves match. Less sure about who we’d leave out from the team set out above though. Smith has some tricky decisions to make for this one. I guess it will largely depend on who’s impressed in training this week.

I wouldn't put Nakamba in, he's incredibly limited and doesn't even shield the defence well. I'd keep Ramsey in. I would someone goes through Mee as well early on, the dirty bastard.

We will fuck these Minecraft badge wearing fuckers 1-0.

Good to see Amazon Prime is now integrated into SkyQ Apps which saves a lot of farting about.

I wonder if the 'route' of the data into Sky Q is different (ie more fucking reliable) than to standard Fire kit, or if it's just a different packaged front end onto the same thing. Loads of complaints about the football coverage this week.

With the suspensions and injuries it is time for some of the squad players to really step up - I actually think having a few of them in for this game is no bad thing, they have got this opportunity to prove they are worth sticking with and if they do that then those not playing today will have to work even harder to get back in.  I would definitely give AEG a start today, and stick with Ramsey in midfield too as he looked fully at home against Wolves.

Guilbert     Konsa     Mings    Targett
              McGinn     Hourihane
AEG              Ramsey              Jack

Strange isn't it, the SkyQ App is seamless on my telly box, I despair using the  Firestick which I bought because the smart telly app built into the Android TV OS was flakier than a big bag of flaky things.

Anyone want to buy a Firestick?

I tried streaming from a tablet and phone and possibly even used the app on my TV, all were crap. The matches this week via SkyQ have been reliable and pretty good quality too so far.

Plus it's so much easier to use one machine for everything. I may actually start to use my Amazon Prime account for watching stuff now.

We're going into a holiday rental for a few months while we do work on a new house, just been researching the NowTV stick which also has Prime Video available via it as well as iPlayer, Netflix & Disney+, looks like there's some good deals up front on Sport & Movies bundles as well.

The Now TV sticks are pretty good to be honest.  I think we got a few months free subscription to movies when we bought it.

Hoping for the best, obvs but wondering whether these two games will  expose the comparative thinness of our squad. Might bring focus to any January investment.

Roku are best in my opinion. I've found firesticks a bit clunky.

Villa to win 3-0
Half time 0-0
Three penalties in the last five minutes.

I use the Fire TV cube thing.

It's pretty solid. Run Kodi on it too *taps nose*

Runs very smoothly.

I have a slightly unlikely formation in mind for this evening:
Martinez
Elmo Konsa Mings Targett
Ramsey Hourihane McGinn
Guilbert Watkins Grealish

My rationale is that Guilbert and Elmo can both defend and swing in crosses, Guilbert is quick and Burnley's left side is strong, with McNeil and Taylor getting up and down.
Hourihane sits in front of our CB and picks up the second ball from Wood and Rodriguez.
I'd have AEG and Traore come on after 60 minutes, depending on how the game is going.

I have no concerns about Ramsey playing: remember those couple of reducer-tackles he made against Burton? - he's physically up to the game and has a simple and effective use of the ball.

I've got more chance of playing there than Guilbert has!

a few selection issues
I think it will be Elmo for Cash Hourihane for Luiz
AEG for Traore
I cant see Smith wanting to make toomany changes.

Ramsey isn't a holding midfielder though. In Luiz absence we need someone to hold the middle and clear away second balls breaking from their aerial bombardment of our box. Not a fan of Nakamba but think he is a better bet than any of our other options tonight to do that. Wood caused Mings a lot of problems last season in the air.

I thought Ramsey did ok v Wolves. Nice cross at end that Grealish nearly got on the end of, that aside I thought he naturally struggled with the pace of the game at times. It's probably him or Hourihane I expect for tonight. I think Deano will go for Ramsey alright

Is Barkley fit for tonight? If so, I think the midfield 3 will be Barkley, McGinn and Ramsay - Hourihane is a luxury we can't afford against these dirty feckers!
If he is still out, I'd give Nakamba a start over Conor. Oh dear!

What it does highlight is how lacking in depth (and quality) our midfield actually is outside of our first choice 11.
