It's the hope that kills you.
-
Benteke sent off after the whistle
-
Bossed it.With style.Confidence back.
Who knows?
-
Never in doubt.
-
Left it late but let’s hope we take it to the last day. But a win is a win
-
A very good, professional performance. Should have had more goals tbh.
-
Three points and a clean sheet. We'll lose at Everton.
-
Small step forward. Simply have to follow up now. We go down, we do so fighting to the end.
-
Annoyingly decent - just a game or two too late....
-
Yay.
Our best perforance at VP since Newcastle game. Amazing what going a couple of goals up can do for a young, inexperienced team. We looked like a good side once we were 2 up and saw things out well which we're certainly not good at.
Have to win at Everton now who are on the beach like Palace. Maybe just maybe....
-
Did Benteke get sent off after the final whistle?
-
Best performance for ages. Energy, purpose, quality, (some) good finishing, lots of chances. 3 points and an improved goal difference. Fantastic.
Palace are shit. Apparently Benteke was sent off after the whistle.
-
No need for any negativity today. Very good performance against a poor palace. For the hologram criticism, hourihane showed grit and determination as well as good dead ball delivery, man of the match for me, closely followed by Elmo. Dogs of war that’s what we need.
-
Never in doubt.
However I spent the last two hours pretending to do work that didn't need doing.
However we always beat Palace. One of few wins in 15/16 was 1-0 at Villa Park.
-
The end has been postponed.
-
What did Benteke do to get sent off ?
-
Did Benteke get sent off after the final whistle?
Yep.
-
Motm Luiz - again.
-
Another three like that would be nice. Well done.
-
Frustrating that we haven't managed to pull just one or two more of these kind of performances and results out of the bag. It could be too late but we need to forget about that, take it one game at a time and see what happens.
Nice to remember what winning feels like.
-
Did Benteke get sent off after the final whistle?
Yep.
What happened?
-
What did Benteke do to get sent off ?
Kicked out at Hause I think
-
If we have to get relegated playing like this and winning games, so be it, as it stands we still have a chance, fantastic win for the lads, far the better team today and probably should have had more, Smith really needs to channel this win now, make the lads focus on the fact we can win games and can put a good performance in, bring on Everton, this could go right down to the wire, we never do it easy.
-
Ta. I switched over to the cricket once the final whistle went.
-
Crazy we didn't have that approach in the other winnable games since the mini-season started.
-
Very very happy with that.
It's not over yet. It's bloody well not over yet. Come on you Villa boys.
-
Confidence going into the Everton game is crucial. We’ve got it. More of the same against Everton and we can put pressure on West Watford.
-
What did Benteke do to get sent off ?
Kicked out at Hause I think
Konsa?
-
Yep Konsa, my mistake. I was only half listening when they suddenly said Benteke was off.
-
Palace must look like we do to other fans. They were truly awful.
We deserved it, just a shame we start showing something when it’s realistically too late.
Elmo at right back made the whole thing look so much better. Please leave him there for Everton.
-
Benteke was giving out some verbals, Davis copped a mouthful someone obviously got in his head.
-
Credit to the team and management.
Spot on today. Getting to 30 points feels big. Follow that up with three more big performances and we will escape.
-
Survival still a possibility.
-
Ta. I switched over to the cricket once the final whistle went.
For the first time in weeks now I have looked at SSN.
-
That’s all we ask for.... Effort reaps reward.
Every man gave his all today, and we won as a team. Trez, whilst not flavour of the month on this forum generally, can never be accused of lack of effort. Never stops running and today was rewarded with a brace (which could have been a hat trick).
Still not convinced Smith has turned the corner... our biggest outlet, especially early on, was from Elmo at RB, a change enforced by injury. You’d have to question whether we’d have got that performance with Konsa there?
Still a long way to go, but 3 points and the required performance were there today. 1 down, 3 to go!
COME ON VILLA!!
-
Benteke sent off at the final whistle. For mouthing off to the ref I think.
-
For a while now I've thought we'd benefit less from coaching than we would from psychotherapy. Whatever's been said or done, our heads looked right today.
Loved it, I'd forgotten what a win makes me feel like!
-
Did Benteke get sent off after the final whistle?
Yep.
What happened?
I think Roy told him that he'd accepted an offer from Villa and he had to be at Bodymoor by 9am tomorrow morning.
-
Good result. Well done Trezeguet.
-
A lot better. I've seen some dreadful performances since the restart from us, but Palace should be ashamed. Heartless, gutless and no desire. We've played other sides who were a little lackadaisical but made nothing of it. Thankfully today we we aggressive and pushed players into the box. A comfortable win (and we've had maybe 2 of those beforehand this season).
Grealish was better today, largely because he was more influential near the box. Partly because Palace couldn't be fucked to do the same kind of hatchet job on him as everyone else has. That said, others stepped up. McGinn has been better of late. Hourihane was decent today. Elmo on the right delivers good crosses and Trezeguet was getting good positions and two excellent instinctive finishes. When he doesn't get too much time, he's better. It doesn't allow the doubt to creep him and get him flustered. I'm actually pleased for Trez. He's not a world beater and he has had dreadful games, but he tries and looks like he cares. Just needs more confidence, but hopefully those goals will help him kick on. 6 goals this season. For an 8 million pound player that's not bad, about what you'd expect by market values. Point is, he's squad level rather than first 11, but we never signed the first 11 standard winger.
Reina has been solid since returning, and assured. He had key moments today just to steady us with a couple of saves.
Everton are beatable. The important thing is, we show plenty of intent. Hourihane as an example gets stick, and rightly so, but he has to play every game, as simple as that, because he can deliver a set piece and is a threat from distance. One attribute is better than no attributes. So he plays. I'd also look to play Elmo in the Everton and W.H games at least. Maybe rest for the Arsenal game. He's reliable. He's lost all his pace but he can deliver from wide and keep some discipline. Good attitude as well. Play him.
-
Get in there lads. It's still on!
-

Yep very happy with both the forced changes, have thought Elmo underused as an experienced and fairly reliable older head. Well, never say never.
-
Well done Villa and well done Trez best game for a long time, got a chance against Everton, they were very poor today against Wolves. There's still a glimmer of hope.
UP THE VILLA
-
Benteke sent off at the final whistle. For mouthing off to the ref I think.
I found watching Benteke a bit depressing. I mean to hell with him because he left, but at the same time he was such a beast for us. He looks ready for the scrap heap now, and he's only just 30. Real shame. I know a few of us might have entertained the thought of him returning in January, but it would have been a waste of time and money. He's fucked.
-
Yep. Starting eleven needs to play on Thursday, with Targett.
Also shout out to Neil Taylor. Probably had one of his best stints at LB for us, so a shame to see him go off injured. Anyone know what was up with him - didn’t seem hampered in any way?
-
elmo, Hourihane and Trez played very well.
About time.

Yep, he had a couple of headers that he would have buried in his time with us but whatever it is that he had then looks to have gone for good.

Back it up with a win against Everton and it's not too late. That'd put us a point from safety with no chance for the 2 above us to both win in the game in hand.
Then you have Watford vs Man C, West Ham vs Man U and us vs Arsenal meaning we're unlikely to fall any further behind.
Beating Everton is an absolute must though, no excuses, we have to go after them.
-
Probably as comfortable as we've looked since Newcastle at home. Too little to late though.
Playing proper full backs and having Konsa at rcb gave us a better balance.

-
After their disallowed goal we were well on top and thoroughly excellent. We should have won that 4 or 5-0 easy.
Keinan Davis proved why he'll never be a top striker. He comes on for 15 minutes, misses a complete sitter and after about 5 minutes he was blowing out of his arse. He lost the ball every time he had it and wasn't tracking back at all.
Luiz had another good game, but for me Hassan just edged him out for MOTM.
-
Benteke kicked Konsa at the final whistle apparently
-
BBC reporting that Benteke's red was for kicking out at a Villa player.
He'd had a pop at Konsa late on after being fouled about 35yds out a minute or so before the final whistle. Presumably there was some "afters".
-

And there I am.
-
Benteke was frustrated - partly his own fault, he was poor and in general he wasn't aggressive enough.
He's finished now.
-
Solid performance. We showed the determination and drive that we've all been crying out for.
Still a bit light on top but today not a day to be negative.
Thought Elmo, Trezeguet and Douglas Luiz (again) the standouts.
-
Can't remember a better 2nd half seen from Villa this season. Played most of it in the Palace half.
-
Solid performance. We showed the determination and drive that we've all been crying out for.
Still a bit light on top but today not a day to be negative.
Thought Elmo, Trezeguet and Douglas Luiz (again) the standouts.
Targett played very well too.
-
Well there’s hope but I fear it’s too little too late. Hope im wrong. Well done Trezeguet, I’ve probably been one of biggest critics, but than he owes us a few performances.
-
Agent Benteke forgot he was supposed to get his red card DURING the game.
He's not getting paid now.
-
As well as players playing in their proper positions, we improved after the half time team talk.
What is this sorcery??
-
Agent Benteke forgot he was supposed to get his red card DURING the game.
He's not getting paid now.
He did clear one for us when they seemed certain to score, to be fair.
-
Much better. Hourihane and Elmo both made a difference, and well done to Trezuguet who I wouldn't have bet on scoring twice.
Beat Everton and who knows.
-

He’s been finished a long time

Targett played very well too.
As did Taylor before going off
-
Well done Villa.
A solid display with Luiz motm again for me today.
-
We also saw a little bit of the old John McGinn back today. Good lad.
-
Great all round performance, especially Jack, Dougie, Elmo and Conor.
Should I take credit for Trezeguet's match winning exploits? I'd just told those gathered near me that he was shit!
Thanks Trez!
-
The two forced changes did us a big favour
Target gets forward plays one twos with Grealish and we are as an attacking force much better
it’s no time to be cautious we’ve got go out and win games
-
Jack seemed much higher up the pitch today which was a bonus
-
We played better but it helped that Palace where hopeless and really the first team since the restart who we have played who have been well off form.West Ham .Brighton and Watford all had the luck of having Norwhich to take an easy three points off.
FB's better today as they both got forward as well as defending.McGinn was back at it , Luiz was his same self winning the ball well and Grealish was more of a threat.
Everton where awful today and are very beatable so there is still hope
-
A few points and observations. Best game Trezeguet has had for us I reckon. Grealish is getting a bit petulant when things don't go for him, arm waving etc. Cut it out Jack. Played ok though. The penalty was the right decision, stop throwing you arms in the air as it looked like he dived, which he did. Mings was much better. Thought we got away with one with their disallowed 'goal'. Wasn't deliberate but fuck 'em. Palace are absolutely woeful but credit to us for looking far the better side throughout. No-one had a bad game although I don't see anything at all in Samatta. Some of our set piece distribution could have been better. It is probably too little too late but if we can gain a bit of momentum going into next season, the smell of defeat will be diminished and the players have some heart. Great win and it feels so much better!
-
Targett isn't fantastic by any means, but he's so much better than Neil Taylor. He'll be one of the better left backs in the Championship if we do go down.
-
Much much better....borderline enjoyable after 2nd went in.
I’ll admit it, literally a minute before we took the lead screaming at the tv for Trez to be replaced but the goal seemed to give him a complete lease of life...hopefully he keeps that up in the last 3 games.
Lack of a striker joining in is still a concern but everyone else played v well - Douglas stood out again for me
-

He's finished now.
It's difficult to move about with your pockets full of wedges of notes.
-
Too little, too late
-
Too little, too late
You're a little ray of sunshine !
-
Our balance was so much better once a proper RB came on. And Elmo gave them loads to think about down the right.
-
Too little, too late
That’s the never say die spirit!
-
Second half was best half in the league since first half at Burnley.
-
Too little, too late
Don't care it's good to win a bloody football match.
-
Too little, too late
You might be right, but fuck me just enjoy the win.
-
https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/12027138/trezeguet-scores-twice-to-give-villa-hope
-
Aye that’s true enough!
-
I agree on Elmo, I think he struggles to play every game now (and he was fucked with about 15-20 to go) but having a right back who can get forward and whip dangerous balls in is so important, with him and Guilbert I'm pretty happy with the right back options. On the other side I'd like to see Taylor replaced, he's not a terrible defensive player but he's just awful in the opposition half.
I do like Konsa though, I'd like to see him in the holding role in midfield, I think he's a good tidy player.
-
When I saw Trez in the line up - I decided on a long family walk rather than 2 more hours of misery.
Maybe I should find somewhere to walk on Thursday evening.
Well done Villa and Trez.
-
So nice to not feel pissed off after a game.Trez played like he was trying to prove a point, so well done.
For the first time in ages we have something to take into the next game. We kept it alive but I don’t trust this set up to stay up, at least we showed some fight.
-
The best we have played for a while. We looked more confident, looked up for it and at times, played some half decent stuff.
-
What’s this sensation I’m feeling.......it’s happiness! I’m gonna make the most of it and pray, to any Gods that are listening, that it continues for the next three matches
-
Great result and an excellent performance. The quality really flowed through us second half and we should and could have won by more.
Pleasing to see how poor Palace were too and the potential for all our opponents to be miles off the pace.
-
If Leicester win tonight and ManU tomorrow then Arsenal will have nothing to play for - like Everton.
-

Agree with all of that, Paul. I'd add that with so many free kicks being won by us we need someone to deliver them and someone to finish them. Hourihane can do the first but we've often lacked someone to benefit: today we saw an unlucky hero utilising the free kick in the first half.
-
Momentum counts for an awful lot in football. We’ve never really been able to build up any this season..I don’t think we’ve had two wins on the bounce? If we can just get an early goal at Everton......
-
If Leicester win tonight and ManU tomorrow then Arsenal will have nothing to play for - like Everton.
Indeed. And Arsenal play Watford on the last day of the season. And Everton still have to play Bournemouth!
-
Jack seemed much higher up the pitch today which was a bonus
It's where he needs to be. Winning free kicks 60 or 70 yards from their goal is a bit pointless, get in and around the box kiddo, get kicked up in the air where we can do some damage.
-
If Leicester win tonight and ManU tomorrow then Arsenal will have nothing to play for - like Everton.
Realistically with their GD one more point for manu and arsenal are done for the season.

that's still on great as we might want them to beat Wayford on the last day
-
True but better than a scenario where they have something to play for against us then nothing to play for against Watford.
I think arsenal are a big wild card in all this. They are so unpredictable they could win or lose against any of the teams in danger. They haven’t really been in contention at the top for a long time but don’t really look like they are on their holidays either.
-
VAR reversing our penalty decision was correct but what fucks me off about it is how long they took scrutinising over it from every angle before reversing it compared to how quick the Man Utd one was given the other night for an almost identical incident, it is a fucking farce.
-
We have to go to Everton and win the game. Puts immense pressure on those two teams above us to fight out a result. A West Ham win and suddenly Watford’s run in looks difficult and it at least takes it to the last day, something we’d have all taken this time yesterday.
-
Three points and a clean sheet. We'll lose at Everton.
That's the spirit

Your right we can over think stuff
I was telling my kids today instead of thinking we’ve got to win 3 out of 4 just think we’ve got to win against Palace that’s all that matters right now
then it’s a Everton all the scenarios can wait let’s just concentrate on beating Everton then suddenly it’s not 3 out of 4 it might be 1 out of 2 which seems a lot more doable even for us
so we go again
-
I made the decision not to watch it today. Sat in the garden with a beer and chilled. Heard some cheering from the houses at the back and assumed it was blue noses cheering a Palace goal. It was amazing to go in the house after the game and see the score. Also nice to know the people who live in the houses opposite are Villa!! A very rare good day. Thanks Trez. Thanks Villa.
-
I also missed it. I'd promised to go on a bike ride with the other half. I'm going to try to miss Everton but I can't promise!
-
Shaved my beard off.
Villa won.
-
Shaved my beard off.
Villa won.
A chest and two bollocks should see us safe.
-
I did say that I thought we would win today. However, I was really surprised that, after our first goal, I saw movement and commitment in the team that I haven’t see for absolutely yonks. A joy to watch and, if they had shown the same determination since the restart we wouldn’t now even be thinking about relegation. 2 wins from the ones we drew would have made all the difference. I also said the other day possible draws against Everton and Arsenal and a win at West Ham. Really hope I’m wrong as I feel, bearing in mind our inferior goal difference, we still may need 2 wins and a draw ie 37 points. Ideally I would like to see West Ham beat Watford as the latter’s last two matches would then be Citeh at home and finally, the Arse away.
-
Shaved my beard off.
Villa won.
A chest and two bollocks should see us safe.
Surely the bollocks are one game? They are a package that cannot be separated. Therefore, I'd like to propose that Jon shaves his arse crack if we pull this off? In fact, I will join him in shaving my own bottom if we avoid relegation. I promise.

Jon shaving his own arse crack would be an even bigger miracle than us staying up.

Amused by the amount of posts saying how shite Palace were. That seems to happen a lot the rare times we actually win - people slagging off the quality or lack thereof in the opposition. There was very little between the teams in the first half, we stepped up a gear for fifteen minutes in the second half which was enough to get us the insurance goal and then Palace had the better of the late chances. But it was a hard-earned win against a side who are, in the wider context, better than us and not in urgent need of points. No need to decry them as the new Blosers.
I would have felt aggrieved if that handball for their "goal" had been given against us. Surprised though that no one has mentioned a possible foul by Ayew on Reina as the free kick comes in. Ayew clearly nudges Reina - to the extent that it made Reina fall to the ground I'm not sure, only he knows that but by falling to the ground and giving Palace an unguarded goal, it's more likely that it was a foul. Watching the game, when the VAR check came up, I presumed it was for that.
-
Shaved my beard off.
Villa won.
A noble sacrifice. I cut off my lockdown ponytail.
We must do what we can.
-
There is one reason we won that game and that is Grealish played as a forward not a fill in defender. He looked and played like the player he is and tormented the Palace defenders. With more attacking power it gave the Villa defence respite from being under consistant pressure.
-
Spent most of today getting ridiculously ahead of myself. We've still a huge mountain to climb and odds on to get relegated but we are showing some fight. That's all we asked for.
-

Not meaning to sound clever after the event, but I thought exactly the same about Ayew fouling Reina and, like you, I assumed the VAR was for that.
-
Yeah I thought it must be for the Ayew challenge as well and thought we had a good chance of getting it chalked off given protection to keepers. When it was clear they were focusing on handball I thought "we're screwed here"
-
VAR reversing our penalty decision was correct but what fucks me off about it is how long they took scrutinising over it from every angle before reversing it compared to how quick the Man Utd one was given the other night for an almost identical incident, it is a fucking farce.
Was their handball even looked at? Also, I thought five minutes added on was a bit much.

I think it’s the additional substitutions causing the extra added in times, their must half a dozen in the second half yesterday.

I think it’s the additional substitutions causing the extra added in times, their must half a dozen in the second half yesterday.
Substitutions plus the ridiculous drinks breaks.
Otherwise known as the advertisement breaks of the future 🤔
Good point that, I hadnt thought of that.

Yep, two things. Apparently the TV companies are pressing for the "water breaks" to be incorporated fully from now on so they can show adverts. Just like in American football.
The other things was, when their "goal" went in my first words were "where the f**k was Reina?" When they showed it again it was obvious that he had been taken out by Ayew and if the goal had been allowed it would have been a trevesty.

Very pleased over all but so sad to see what's happened to Benteke. Nothing to do with the red card but his performance.
So sad.

Actually thought he looked pretty sharp during the first half, but then fafed away as the game went on. Still looked much more of a threat than Samatta and Davis though.

Not meaning to sound clever after the event, but I thought exactly the same about Ayew fouling Reina and, like you, I assumed the VAR was for that.
Either the commentary or the post-match analysis, I forget which, said that had handball not been given they'd have looked at the Reina incident next. I presumed that the TV can hear the dialogue with Stockley Park.

I promise.
Let’s not go there again please, some of us remain traumatised by ‘The Shaving Thread’ & Dan The Pool Man to this day.

Jesus, missed that at the time. I had to go and look for it though, didn't I. Pass the mind bleach.

Never really been his biggest fan, but Hourihane looked OK on Sunday in a more advanced role where he doesn't have to get involved in the defensive stuff as much. He links up well at times with Grealish when Jack is out on the left.

Me too, hadn't had a shave since before Easter and got rid of the lot yesterday, not long before kick off.

I didn't watch, took the kids to play frisbee (sorry, flying disc thingy) in the park and have an ice cream instead.
Am I allowed to watch our next match?
-
I'm pleased with the performance we need to play like that for the last three games.
-
I see that Citeh have been admitted back into the Chumps League. So, 5th place this season looks like we are going to have to settle for Europa League instead!!

No. Everyone must do exactly what they did before. I dressed Aston-Lee in his Villa kit for the first time this year when there has been a match on.

Did some hedge cutting when notification of a Palace goal came through on my phone. Then notification it had been ruled out. Sat on the bench looking aimlessly into the garden pond for the rest of the first half. Was in the toilet when we scored the first. Made a sandwich at half time to celebrate. I was balancing on steps very precariously when the buzzer notification came up on my phone for another goal. Had to get back on Terra firma to check who it was. Returned to my work with renewed vigour.

So it's you pair of scruffy bastards fault we're in this position? Call yourself Villa fans.
And to think I did my back, sack and crack all for nothing.

Probably should have posted a warning about this thread on the grounds of public decency.

A massively improved performance with the chances of further goals being scored. People have already commented on the defence tightening up; the midfield looks a strong unit with some creativity' it's only up front that we look toothless.
