Title: Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Dave on August 04, 2019, 08:14:21 PM
Premier League, Saturday 10th August, 17.30

Son and Foyth suspended for them. Alli knackered his hamstring today. Davies, Aurier and Dier all doubtful.

It's good to be back.

Kane for them, McGinn equaliser, Grealish winner in the 88th!   ;)

On the one hand, extremely cool to have pre-match threads which begin like 'Tottenham Hotspur' again. On the other hand, ah fuck, we're going to lose aren't we.

Be happy with a good performance here, at least to get pundits saying hang on Villa aren’t a bad team. Any points would be a bonus.

4-0 to them.
From the drains, the gutters and the hovels they rise, the cliche driven pundits, Murdoch shilling takers, Sandwell deadbeats and bitter 'noses to cry "told you so", to damn us, condemn us and to laugh.

But it's only one game, and they will slowly fade as we settle and progress, and the bitterness will envelop them once more.

We will likely lose (I expect Spurs to have another good season) - perhaps day 1 of the new season, we might catch them cold. But I just want to see a performance that has us competitive - if we lose by the odd goal that will be a good sign for the season to come. It wont get much harder than Spurs away.

Solid display. Loads of energy and guile. We will have a plan for Spurs but they are very good. But I have full confidence we can put on a super display and come away with a point.

1-1 Kane, Jota

Random sidetrack :

What year was it we went down there for a night game (I think) and won to go top of the league ? Seats above Park End were massively overfilled, shared my "space" with at least 3 others

And what year did we draw at VP in the FA cup, then beat them 1-0 in the replay midweek?

Two awesome aways.

Spurs win seems the most likely outcome to me.  It's asking a lot of a load of Premier League novices who've barely played together to go away to a Champions League side who know each other inside out and win.  If we take an early lead things might pan out differently but really I'm hoping for some indications that our new guys look at home at this level and can put a shift in.

Spurs go to 2 up after 15 mins, loads of smug fuckers as we start 'doing a Fulham', we pull 1 back before HT, awww cute little gallant Aston Villa making a game of it. We rattle in another 5 in the second half with no reply, their big screen goes blank from the shock of it as we make Spurs look like the side just promoted and out of their depth, "even your telly's shit" rings out from the away end.

Fuck 'em all, we're back.

Even game, 1-0 at half time but we look more than decent. We pull one back only to be followed immediately by a very dodger Spurs penalty. They score another in the last few minutes of the game (deflected) to give a scoreline that doesn't reflect the game.

Bournemouth at home will be first 3 points. And the manner that we do it will erase the memory of Spurs' fortune. We'll then go unbeaten for the rest of the month.

Before the start of the season and particularly for a new team, this is one of those games that is basically a free hit and any kind of result is a bonus. There’s no shame if we lose this one so it would be great to see a good performance and an indication of how the team is developing...and a bonus if we can get a win of a draw.

1-1.

Gone for a draw, we seem to have a fantastic spirit with board, management and players all pulling the same direction (and with no small amount of quality) whereas spurs have had Poch sulking about not getting players in again. I can see us catching them cold but them pegging us back in the 2nd half. 1-1

Hoping we might catch them cold early as can happen but i'd obviously bite your hand off for a draw (I have this down as the 3rd hardest game of the season).

I just want to see a good performance have some fluency and create some chances.  This will take time but I also think that in time we'll have a really good side. 3-1 Spuds.

Every time I see Spurs play, I always think Lamela is their unsung danger, and Erikson their best player. And they've got Ndombele now, too. A good player.

Son and Alli out is a big plus for us.

I’ll be not happy, but maybe you could say content, with worse case 1-goal defeat. I’d dearly love to FTF though! I’ve got a Spurs supporting mate and the last few seasons have been pretty bad with the snidey remarks and all the rest of it. It would be great to have something genuine to rub his nose into, rather than just being able to chuckle at their almost-ran last couple of seasons. I’ve always seen us as similar sized clubs, but with our history overshadowing theirs. I’d love a good solid performance with a Jammy last minute winner!!  Come on you Lion!!

As John e said , how can they really plan against us. They will have no idea how we will set up, or even who plays. I think that will apply for the first 4 or 5 games, as new players are included. The other thing is, It wouldn't surprise me if there isn't a transfer out of the spuds team before the game.

I don’t think that’s too bad a shout on the squad. The only thing is AEG - he had his leg strapped when leaving the team hotel in Leipzig yesterday morning and was limping. I suspect that DS will opt to put Trezeguet in his position for this game so as not to risk AEG any further.

That said, it might just be a twisted ankle and he’ll be running around again today/tomorrow. But that tackle on him was really poor.

So I reckon the following team:

Heaton

Fred
Engels
Mings
Targett

Conor

SJM
Jack

Jota
Wes
Trez

I think it’ll be a close game. It’s either going to be a draw or a small reality check (eg 2-1 Spurs). But I am excited to see how this season goes from now onwards.

Mad how much I am looking forward to this game.  Me and my mate were offered seats in a box, which we took and will be fantastic by all accounts, but regret it a little that we won’t be in with the pack as it’s bound to be an awesome atmosphere.

Since the fixtures came out I’ve always had a sneeky suspicion we could nick it, simply as our tails will be up and you never know how complacent the opposition can be with a newly promoted side.  But although Spurs did lose last season to a few unexpected teams, that was away from home.

Spurs don’t draw an awful lot of games, so I think it could be a very good match with lots of attacking intent.

I am feeling uncannily optimistic about this one, and in fact about the season ahead for once! I think the bookies may have grossly underestimated us and think we will get a 2-1 result. I would so love Jack to score a spectacular one against them too for obvious reasons! I can dream....

I have a nagging concern that we may be slightly undercooked compared to Spurs. Their pre season fixtures included Juventus, Man Utd, Bayern Munich and Inter. Our only real test was against Leipzig. Hopefully it won’t play a part but you never know.

I’d be delighted with a draw, then hopefully 3 points against Bournemouth.

Spurs will be knackered after that lot and travelling half way round the world to play in all these fixtures just to meet the demands of their commercial sponsors. It’s folly in my view and I prefer our approach.

I of course reserve the right to completely change my mind on saturday night and lambast the club for its naive approach.

Given how the season finished last year (12 wins in 15 games) I like the idea of a pre-season that slowly ramps up in quality and lets us keep a winning mentality going. We're now on a run of 17 wins in 20 games including 6 in the last 6. I know pre-season results don't mean anything but confidence and momentum matter and we've beaten pretty much everything put in front of us for 6 months. For this summer I prefer that to travelling all over the world to play in pointless tournaments against champions league sides who would see us as we see some of the teams we've just played. I don't think we'll be coming in cold.

They were only playing in Germany last week. Inter Milan game was actually at WHL wasn't it?

Would snatch your hands off for a draw tbh. I'd be o.k with a narrow defeat just to show we can compete at this level again. Don't want a reality check defeat though.

This

Me too - The fans i dislike most, smug under acheivers who act like they only have to turn up to win. I dont care if its a 1 goal win by some flukey deflection ill take it.

Major FTF!!

A routine 3-1 away win. SJM, Jota and Mings. Trippier for them.

Come off it, that's mental, no chance whatsoever.

Trippier plays for Atlético Madrid.  3-0 then! :)

Really? Wow, I have my finger on the pulse, don't I?!

Most football fans are blindly optimistic at this stage of the season but we really do have positive cause to be so. There hasn't been such a feel good factor around VP for nearly a decade. Yes, most of us possibly had never heard of Guillbert, Engels, Konsa, Trezeguet and Wesley up until recently but we have assembled a squad of the coach's own choosing who will be technically proficient to be able to play Deano's way. The club will have tremendous backing from the supporters this season - 30,000 season ticket holders is unheard of in my lifetime supporting the Villa. I'm backing us to go to London and put in a performance that we'll be proud of.

Okokok... but the big question is - is it a good 3-3 or a bad 3-3?  As in, do we come back from 3-0 down and love it, or do we concede an equaliser and go home thinking 'what if?'?

Even game, 1-0 at half time but we look more than decent. We pull one back only to be followed immediately by a very dodger Spurs penalty. They score another in the last few minutes of the game (deflected) to give a scoreline that doesn't reflect the game.

Bournemouth at home will be first 3 points. And the manner that we do it will erase the memory of Spurs' fortune. We'll then go unbeaten for the rest of the month.

That rings true to me.

Can't see us failing to score at least once, but they should have enough to get the points.

I forgot to mention, we'll do it with 10 men. Wesley will get sent off. The red mist needs to be controlled. With all the new signings we'll miss attention to detail. The lad needs to understand he'll be targeted. Right now he's a three match ban waiting to happen. Oh and I still think we'll beat Bournemouth and finish the month unbeaten.

For all their money saving, new stadium and decent players, Spurs for me are still all fart, not shit. If they want to think they'll win the league after beating us, good luck to them. Tossers; since football was invented.

Hopefully we can catch them cold, because they're on a different level to us squad wise currently.

Be interested to see how high our full backs play on Saturday. I imagine we'll be asking our "wide" players to play a little bit narrower this season particularly away from home, but to think we can just go and play 4-3-3 and go again from what we did last season I think would be naive, so I hope there will be that little bit of flexibility to play as a narrower 5 when we haven't got the ball.

For all the changes we've made, the first 11 won't be radically different from Wembley, so fingers crossed we can carry a bit of that momentum . Would be phenomenal to get any sort of result.

Spurs missing a lot of players on Saturday. Walker-Peters and Rose likely to be full backs, and Rose missed pre season to try and get a move away. Son suspended, Alli injured and Eriksen likely in Madrid . Their new guys in typical Levy style are only arriving in last couple of days in transfer window, Dybala will be superb I reckon if they get him.

Good time to play them. If El Ghazi is fit he could have a huge impact on left wing.

Levy's stinginess cost them getting Grealish in last summer when we were facing liquidation. Hopefully a real sliding doors moment (not the shit movie) in the fortunes of both clubs. If there's a bet to be had in the Prem this weekend, it's that Grealish is going to score. Whether that's enough for a win I don't know. I think we'll come out confident, in good fettle and make a good game of it, take it too them. If we can avoid silly errors I fancy a score draw. There are players in our team who will be relishing being in the English top flight for the first time. I'd expect us to really test them. If we can be wary of their quality we'll get a result. I'm hoping this will be a good game.

Is it really beginning to grate on anyone else how all these so called 'experts' are predicting how much we are going to struggle and we are in a dog fight to survive?

There is so much trash in this league, I mean seriously how many Bournemouth, Brighton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Norwich, Sheff Utd, Southampton and Watford players would get in our side? Yet these 'experts' have the likes of Bournemouth and Burnley riding high and us as relegation fodder.

I can really see us around 10th most the season and with a bit of luck going our way even higher.

Spurs, like every other team this season, are going to have to play very, very, very well to beat us as we go fearlessly toe-to-toe with them.
They won't manage it. Our new defence will show its mettle. Our front five will live up to all our hopes.

2-0 us. Marker well and truly put down. Glory awaits this team, I'm convinced of it.

I think an open attacking game but they have more quality and more nous. 4.2 to them and we become everyone's 2nd favourite team this year.

I'll be bloody disappointed if our new England international goalkeeper and the quality players in front of him let in four first time out. Might as well have kept the bollocks we had before.

The three promoted teams will always be amongst the favourites to be relegated. Add to that the play off winners are usually the hot odds on favourites to go straight back down but the pundits actually fancy our chances to survive the drop more than the two reams automatically promoted. We have also made a lot of new signings, some unproven in the Premier League so it is easy for people to throw around the 'do a Fulham' phrase. So personally I don't bother about the pundits opinions. I do think we have a very tough game to start the season with tomorrow and hope we come out of it relatively unscathed. The last thing we need is a heavy defeat, which Spurs are capable of dishing out to most teams on a good day.

Morning! My first game was at villa park, semi final v leicester. Great english football stadium.

Anyway, welcome back to the first division. Our starting eleven will most likely be 4-2-3-1

Lloris
Walker-Peters Sánchez Vertonghen Rose
Winks Sissoko
Moura Eriksen Lamela
Kane

Dont expect to see Lo Celso/Sessegnon in the squad, NDombele on the bench.

Good luck!

What the pundits fail to take into account is that we got promoted through the play-offs after giving the rest of the league a half season head start!

If we'd started the season with Smith in charge (plus our January recruits), we'd have gone up as Champions, absolutely pissing that league!

i think we'll surprise a few this season, and it could be a blessing that everyone is underestimating us.   ;)

There are "pundits" and there are "journalists". The latter, despite having their opinion discounted because they have "never played the game", tend to analyse and study situations and articulate this from a dispassionate viewpoint.
The former, sit like peacocks pontificating from a point of view influenced by bigotry, cliché, who they played golf with earlier in the week and as desire to cover up their ignorance by being controversial.

I know who's opinion I value more.

I suspect that our best team will be;
Heaton
Guilbert
Targett
Mings
Engels
Douglas
McGinn
Grealish
Jota
Trezeguet
Wesley

Subs
Steer
Elmo
Hause
Hourahane
Nakamba
El Ghazi
Kodjia
I think with that bench we're covered in every position.

For tomorrow though i suspect El Ghazi and Hourahane will swap for Trezeguet and Douglas, Douglas maybe not making the bench even and Lansbury or Davis coming in.

1-1 optimistically.

Davies, Aurier, Foyth, Dier, Wanyama, Dele, Son all miss this game, Lo Celso, Sessegnon, NDombele will need to get up to speed with pochettino's double sessions in training (maybe NDombele will make the bench).

Your players will need to be fit to keep up. In fact, it's one of the biggest differences between first and second division.

Winks will most definitely play the deepest of the five in midfield.

Having just seen the transfer-window activity for every Premier League side, I'm now a little moe sanguine about our chances. Almost all the sides have substantially improved their squad, with the possible exception of the Jawdies, Burnley, Palace and Sourhampton.
It's a tough league, and we're relying on relatively inexpensive unknowns to do the business.
The first 4-6 games are critical, to get a confidence-boosting start.

Fitness won't be a problem, we've had a very intense pre-season, and won every match.  We don't actually have many "second division" players left from last year, and those that are still here, like McGinn and Grealish, are absolute athletes.  I wouldn't worry about McGinn's fitness, he's like the Duracell bunny.

You're obviously a very good team indeed, and will be expecting to win quite easily against a newly promoted side, just don't be surprised if it's not quite as easy as you think.  The likes of Mings and Grealish will be wanting to show that they're amongst the best players in the division, and hopefully you'll get to see that tomorrow.

Even with a few players out and transfer business that was solid, rather than spectacular, that Spurs team still looks decent.  The bastards.

I'm partly of a mind just to get this game out the way and view Bournemouth at home as the true start of the season.

But hopefully we'll have a shit hot start and won't have to wish games away as per 2011-2015.

You wouldn't expect anything less from a team that made the champions league final. That said I wouldn't be writing this one off, the first few weeks of the season often throws up a few surprises (like us tearing Arsenal apart at the start of Lamberts second season) and we've got to be one of the most confident sides in the league right now (coming from nowhere to win the play offs and then brushing aside everyone we played in pre-season including a very good RB Leipzig team). It might mean a big fall back to earth but it won't take a lot more than an early half-chance for us to think we can match them and make it a very good game.

Covering all bases ...

We'll either take a 'welcome back the the premier league' spanking 4-0 or we'll surprise a few and get a score draw

I couldn't call it. Absolutely no idea how it's going to pan out. Pre season has taught us nothing if we're honest.

Here's hoping these players can be as good as well all hope.

Gonna be really interesting to see how we cope against an excellent prem side. It's a whole different ball game now, no matter how many they have out.
The reality struck me when we played Leipzig where I thought we were second best for a good 60 mins and Jack and McGinn were stifled until the last 30 mins. In fact, but for Heaton we would have been a few down.
That said, we have youth, energy, talent, pace and a manager who seems tactically astute and attack minded. That's not a bad combo in this league. Stay up, give them a season in the prem and we might just surprise a few.
Taking this game as a bit of a free hit.... no expectations and our season won't be defined by our results against the top 6.

Win, lose or draw (hopefully win of course!) really looking forward to tomorrow. Great to be back in the Prem and this has provided the opportunity to visit Tottenham’s new stadium for the first time.

This being the case, do we have any suggestions as to where to go for a pre-match drink? Choices were limited at the old White Hart Lane and I suspect even more so now, given that their attendances have virtually doubled.

I am on the train tomorrow so thinking central London for the pre-match pint, but would welcome any suggestions that are nearer to the stadium.

The Irish Centre is (I believe) still open for away fans – that's certainly where we're heading, before getting to the ground a bit earlier for a mooch around. The Elmshurst is the other designated away boozer, but a bit further away.

The other difference from the old ground is that you apparently need to approach it from Worcester Avenue, effectively the opposite direction than the old ground.

I assume Eriksen is leaving in next few weeks so not sure he'll start although doubt Lo Celso will be thrown in when he's just arrived in the country.

Spurs have arguably strongest midifeld options outside top 2 now, lots of depth and quality.

I can really see us around 10th most the season and with a bit of luck going our way even higher.

Most I've seen have us in average position of 14th-15th which is fair enough, I've predicted 14th. Plenty have Burnley below us.

Peter Crouch today predicted we'd finish 18th, Burnley 11th....

He also said we've stay up.

18th.

https://www.givemesport.com/1496017-peter-crouch-predicts-where-each-premier-league-side-will-finish-in-201920-season

Has Norwich finishing 14th.

The i preview pull out today had us in 14th. Brighton, Sheffield united and Norwich relegated. Palace in 17th.

In the Mail he said we would avoid relegation and had us finishing eighteenth.

Really hope Wesley can get off the mark early on in his career with us.

I'll just be happy if he doesn't get sent off and ruin all our pre-season planning. It's something that's been nagging me these last few weeks. He's a bit of a hot head and needs to curb his temper. Scoring a hattrick tomorrow should help cool his nerves.
What makes you think Wes has anger issues? I’ve watched all the preseason games and that thought has never crossed my mind tbh. I remember Jack having a word with him in one of the games, but if it’s a thing then hopefully this will have been picked up by Dean and the staff.

Only been there once- the Bosnich game. Having been used to VP, WHL seemed small. Also very difficult to get to, even living in London at the time. My perception of spurs was that the match at VP always seemed a banker, a bit like Everton. I’d be interested to see the stats from the last 40 or so years, to see how accurate or not that was.

Anyway things are obviously different now, they’ve just lost a champions league final and we’ve just won at Wembley, so things are a bit more even now 😁

The new stadium looks fantastic and I can see why some on here are clamouring for a new ground. For me though, Villa Park was streets ahead of WHL. Let them have the new ground. I’d be very happy if we managed a similar result to the first match at the Emirates. Barry header and Jeffers (?) late equaliser to spare their blushes!

Come on You Lions!!

Bit of an afterthought... we talk about how our inferior local rivals are obsessed with us. I was talking to a Spurs supporter a few weeks back about this match and I mentioned the Emirates match and couldn’t recall who got the equaliser for Arsenal. The fella didn’t miss a beat, naming Jeffers. I hope it was Jeffers, as I’ll look a dick if it wasn’t!!

I think it was Gilberto Silva, but a similar player to Jeffers in many ways! Haha.

It was definitely Mellberg that got our goal, however.

Come on Villa boys, let's do these! Don't fear them or give them too much respect because after all what have they won in recent memory? Their shiny new stadium is obviously their "trophy" to themselves. Besides anything would have been an upgrade on white fart lane. We rebuffed them over Grealish when we were at our lowest and sent them packing as though they were insignificant. Last season they lost 13 games and still finished 4th! They're certainly not invincible, so come on Villa boys let's do them! UTV!

First time I went to WHL was in March 1976, the day after my 18th birthday. We lost 5-2, and I remember being chased around their terracing.
Also went in 1982 for an FA Cup game. We lost 1-0. A fair bit of trouble outside, afterwards.
Last time I went there was for the 4-4 game (can't believe that was 12 years' ago!).
I'm going today, so blame me if we lose!

They have a very good record against us. Is all.

Their good record against us is fairly recent. As I remember, for the first twenty years or so of my following Villa, they never won at Villa Park, and we won at their hovel all the time.

Seem to remember they finally broke their VP curse with a Sheringham goal which was miles offside. Where's VAR when you need it?

Think in the 60s our record against them was similar to our record against Manure over the last 30 years.

Felt like we always beat them home and away in the 90s though.

'Morning each!

Well then, I'll be absolutely delighted if our new-look peeps can manage to thwart those cocky barstewards today & grab a point (or three). My bonce tells me that Spurts should see us off comfortably, however there's always a surprise or two at the start of a new season ain't there? Hopefully Deano will ensure that the lads play on the front foot and look to give the opposition problems throughout. I've no doubt Super Tom will be in for a busy afternoon, but if we can maintain a defensive resoluteness throughout & play with confidence further up the park - then opportunities will shirley come. Fingers crossed eh? UTV

There are going to be handful of games where you just know it’s going to be bloody hard. Liverpool, Man City and Sours, home or away, it doesn’t matter, they are the comfortable top 3 in the league. Anything from these games is a massive plus. After that I don’t see why we cannot compete in almost every case on an even footing, or very close to it. Today is about tactics, confidence, chemistry and figuring out just who were are and what we might become. I agree, we might lose, but if we do, it’s what was the storyline created in our defeat? The Villa we remember from our last PL campaign lost before we kicked off. It won’t be at all the case this season.
