Title: Aston Villa v Derby County post-match thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on March 02, 2019, 04:53:04 PM
Well that was a bit alright wasn’t it? Jack superb. Whelan rolling back the years. Solid at the back. Only very sad note the injury to Elphick who looks like he’s done for the season. It would be a real shame if his Villa career ended the same way as Hutton’s. You never want to see what.

Anyway very positive display and with SJM back next week things can even get better.

Tommy's injury the only downer in a very good performance.

Whelan my MOTM, though they were all excellent.

Win next week and we could be 3 points off 6th. Crazy after the run we've been on that we could still be so close.

Actually infuriating that we've tossed a really good chance to sew up a play off spot with some of the wankiest form imaginable.

Still, on a brighter note the fat lady ain't singing just yet and if that performance level can be maintained maybe the future is a bit brighter after all.

Monk has them punching well above their weight, but just imagine the unnecessary pressure they put him and themselves under with us on the horizon. There's no reason we can't capitalise.

Anyway, today was wonderful.

Has to be said that while we were very good, Derby were utter wank. 3 shots, 0 on target and 1 corner. They're very lucky that we coasted the second half or it could have a right pasting.

280 minutes without a goal, 3 shots on target in 3 matches. They won't be in the Play-offs.

I'm not getting carried away as we've been here before and buggered it up.  We are better with Jack in the side.  Who wouldn't be?  Still lots of the top sides to come too with sides around us in the next month.  Who knows what might happen.  Great win today though, very pleasing to beat a side above us so easily.  Spare a thought for Tommy, who I reckon might just save us a few quid in the transfer marker in the summer if we ask him to stay for another year.

Agreed, plus Bristol City have to come to B6 after that. Two tough games at the end of the season but Norwich and/or Leeds may be promoted by then. Win next week and it's game on. I know, I know, it's the hope that kills you not the despair.

I’m not going to even comment on Jack.
His importance to the team and our club in beyond words.

I do however want to comment on the MOTM.
Glenn Whelan was superb today, absolutely superb.
I have said before that he gets an unfair amount of stick and today I don’t think he did a lot more than he usually does, but when it accompanies an emphatic win it’s far more acceptable.

Did we do a Don't look back in anger?

We did.

That first half was the best 45 minutes I've seen in a long time. Overall to a man everyone had a good game and of course Jack gives us another dimension in midfield. A clean sheet, four quality goals, and with the chances we had it could and should have been more, but I'll settle for Jack's worldie instead.

I'm off to get my dinner now -  a huge helping of humble pie. A few games ago I said on here I never wanted to see Whelan in a Villa shirt again. I thought he was enormous today - genuine contender for MOTM

Yes the first half was the best since the second half at the same opponents.

For all the Hourihane knockers, he showed how much better he can be in a more advanced position. Obviously Jack made a huge difference, but like others, I doff my cap to Glenn Whelan as well, as today he was outstanding.

The play offs are still way off, as realistically there is one place available, and even if we improve, a few teams above us are all going to have to fail.

Didn't see the game but just caught up with the highlights.  Looks like we played some great stuff: team goals and an individual bit of magic.  We've built on last week's draw with a win so hopefully we can put a run together and see what happens - we've got nothing to lose.

Incidentally, I was having a read of a Derby forum and it seems like it was a good time to play them: they've not scored for a while and Lampard made six changes from their last game.  Nevertheless they were still well above us in the table and we gave them a right shoeing.

It’s not just what he does with the ball. It’s what it allows others to do even if he’s just got the ball at his feet. The running off the ball was the best it’s been in weeks or really since he last played. Whelan also played his best game of the season and the back 5 (inc Steer) were generally untroubled by a very poor Derby side.

He constantly finds space and he does it quickly,  if he goes backward to find space the ball when he gets it goes forwards and then he finds space again.
He makes the game easier for other players.
Add his individual ability and yes he makes a shit load of difference.

We were 48 hours from liquidation in the summer, let’s be thankful we aren’t now called FC Villa of Aston operating in the evo stick league, and lets give this manager every single inch of our backing

For those that were there today, was it close to the level of performances up to the Baggies game?

Yes, it was. Others have praised Jack, Hause, Mings and Whelan but two more aspects pleased me. Whelan and Hourihane pressed high up the field, just as our midfield were doing months ago and haven't done since. And Steer was much quicker coming off his line than Kalinic or Nyland. He didn't have a lot to do, admittedly, but when called on he was sharp and decisive. He deserves to keep his place

We dropped into 3rd gear for most of the second half. If we really wanted to and part of it is that we were a little sloppy and complacent late on it could have been a lot more.

Without knowing the ins and outs of the game, was the difference just Jack ? Or was it more than that ?
We played well when he went off, but for sure he gives all the other players space, set up for 1st goal really set the tone and gave every confidence and a lift

He just sees the early ball so much quicker than anyone else.

We’ll be watching him play in our midfield judging by Smith’s post match interview.

He has that rare ability to make the game look easy, it's what was noticeable early on and made me think he had the potential to be a special player from the first time I saw him playing. Hard to explain what I mean but he doesn't seem to have to try, he just does it. And by that I mean the way he just glides past players, he's not relying on pace, he's not using brute strength, it's like he wants to go past them so he just goes past them and there's nothing they can do to stop it apart from foul him.

Great performance great result. Grealish was immense and his goal was unbelievable. Everybody played brilliantly. I was especially pleased for Conor after some of the sh-t he's been taking recently (the only negative post I've seen was from someone who wasn't even at the game...so sad!). Mings and Hause were immense and Whelan played dm like a man born for the role. Keeping a clean sheet was great as was the level of fan support given to all the players. A great day played out in front of a great supportive atmosphere. We just need to ensure today was the start of a long winning sequence. UTV!

Positives

Jack's back! And the difference to the way we play is unreal. So much more fluidity, drags players out, increases the tempo, he's superb.

His goal was jaw dropping.

Hourihane. Much better, hit the box with regularity and was a vast improvement on what he's offered up of late.

Whelan, quietly domimated them physically.

Hause. Looked as good at centre half as he did at full back.

The full backs pushed on, the midfield hit the box, we transitioned it quicker, we looked dangerous and defended solidly.

Derby were poor, but we haven't stopped that dragging us down before, so it was nice to hit that pre-Albion away performance level again.

Second half we dominated in a very controlled manner and should have had at least 3 more.

Negatives

This is probably about 5 games too late.

As for the boy...He absolutely loved it. Watched the entire game on my lap, had a little sing on his own second half shouting Villa and Super Jack.

The first goal scared him, but he got into the rest after that. Half the food wasn't necessary and neither were the downloads of Ben and Holly off Prime.

A very proud day for me and he's asked to come again. My boy is in love.

Glad your boy had a good day Ad's.

OK - if you are waking up this morning thinking yesterday was a dream - just roll over and look at your partner's face (if you have one).  If there is a big smile you know it was not a dream. When they wake up and say that was the best sex we've had for months - you will know it was not a dream. When they ask what was the song in your head when you were getting into the rhythm do you say "Super,Super Jack?" When they ask that must have been a good porno you watched before coming to bed - do you admit it was the match highlights?

Jack Grealish - better than Viagra - better than porn - he must be waking up knowing he has done wonders for all his Villa fans. I hope he had a good night as well.

Hopefully hitting form again just in time for Blues and a late push for the play-offs.  They are by no means out of reach.   If I have a concern it's that yesterday does make it look as if we are massively over reliant on one player.  In the longer term Smith will need a system that works regardless of the the availability of individuals, but hopefully that will come with getting more players in who can do what he wants them to.

The second goal is a thing of beauty. Besides the speed of our play, there was a definite zip to the passing. Nobody seemed afraid of playing a pass with a bit of welly behind it, and likewise nobody seemed fazed about being on the receiving end, players individual games were very good all round.

Hard to change a winning Team but Deano knows what he should do.
Hard to say to Whelan (MOM maybe) Hourihan, Adomah or El Ghazi after they all played well, that they are out. But for me that is the right decision.

It shows that you don't need superstars in this league to make a difference. There are Elphick and Whelan standard players all over this league making a difference. With Whelan used correctly and sparingly with the right compliment of players he has a role to play. I still wouldn't start him next week because the game is just far too important. But could he come in against the right opposition and do a job? Off course. Just not every week or if he's asked to do more than he is capable of player or at his age.

Post by: Toronto Villa on March 03, 2019, 06:06:37 PM
Well the midfield three of McGinn, Grealish and Hourihane looked brilliant together prior to Jack's injury. I don't necessarily think we need a defined DM if they are all contributing to the defensive side of the game. And we saw that yesterday with Jack and Conor tracking back and winning balls. Also helps to have a settled CB partnership (which as luck as would have it we will have to change again next weekend). But if were to pin me down on a player that could operate more in a defensie capacity it would be McGinn next week, but he's truly a box to box player.

TV, I don’t think SJM Has the discipline, we have had so many seasons when we have lacked exactly what Whelan does and yesterday was him doing it very well.
In the Derby we need an old head put your foot on the ball and in the tackle.
For me Hourihane has to make way for SJM who is the most lightweight of our midfield options.

He’s not a traditional DM. Like I said look at how the three of them played prior to Jack’s injury. And our defence was even worse then. In fact it was the midfield that played vs Blues the first time around and we dominated them. We need to play our game vs worrying about them in my opinion and in doing that take the game to them. A DM position becomes important in counter attack to anticipate and break down attacks. We shouldn’t be playing on the back foot with what we have.

I agree, against blues their 2 main tactics will be hitting long balls and kicking Jack, a DM does nothing to prevent long balls so I'd play Houri, SJM and Jack and set up so that 2 of them are pressing high at any time and the 3rd occupies space in behind. We'll beat them by pressing high and fast and making the long balls become 50/50s.

Sunderland away under Sherwood would be my guess.

How about at Villa Park?

Might have been the Blose League Cup game in 1988.

Grealish's goal was top drawer but I personally prefer Tammys, I love watching us break and cut through teams like that.

Tammy's goal was exactly what we've not been doing, that speed of transition out wide.

6 passes, 80 yards, goal.

You might be right but my first thought was the 6-2 Everton game in 1989. Although that is a guess as I can't actually remember what the score was at half time.

I was amazed at how many people preferred to 'beat the traffic' at the end. I'd want to be there to cheer the team off, preferably with everyone else still there.

I thought that too, I know there are always people who don’t want to get stuck in a car park or whatever but yesterday it seemed like thousands were streaming out with a good five minutes plus injury time left. Maybe it’s because I can’t get to every game anymore but I like to savour a victory like that and made sure I was there until the last player left the field.

Ok so ive watched the goals now about 27 times - anybody beat that yet?

I’ve read and re read posts, reports and articles on the game.

I’ve described the game to non plussed family (non footie fans) members with a massive grin.

All last week I pinned my hopes on jack being able to come back and rejuvenate the team and he took the club, it’s fans and players into the stratosphere.

I was surprised he was named Captain but frankly it’s a master stroke by Dean Smith.

Might be a bit late for play offs but 6 points off I’m not giving up hope and now we’ve clicked the rest of the division won’t fancy coming to VP.

As for Mordor and their orcs, can’t see past a 3-0 win for the fellowship simply because we’re unplayable right now.

Finally, finally a football weekend to saviour.

Thank you Villa Boys.

I normally leave bang on the final whistle (with the bonus that I hear as little of that Oasis rubbish as possible). However, this week I left on around 88 mins.

Road works on Aston Lane meant 4 way traffic lights and I could see that it was going to be chaos after the game.

Does anyone know if the lights are going to be long term ?

Absolutely great performance yesterday.
Not for one minute did we look under pressure which hasn’t happened in a long time.
So many positives but Mings and Hause look excellent and Whelan had his best game in a Villa shirt.
I can’t really add to anything people have said about Jack apart from how impressive was that for his first game back!?

All of the above.

Jack's return was simply sensational - and beyond anything that I was anticipating after his protracted absence. Let's hope he stays fit for the rest of the campaign and inspires the rest of the team to continue their astonishing return to individual & collective form. Bring on the sty-dwellers!  :)

Someone smart needs to explain to me how Derby County have got better camera angles and better picture quality than us in a game at our ground where we panned them? Can someone, anyone show this to the right people at the club and get them to fix AVTV. It's been year after year now of just naff coverage. That was better quality across the board in 3 minutes than our highlights package across 10. And especially the view behind Jack's goal.

Any nerd out there know the latest rules around kick-off? There was a point after Jack's stunner yesterday where all our players were in their half, including Steer.
Under the old rules, that would have meant Derby could have kicked off with our goal unguarded. But the ref seemed to wait until we were back in position.

Sorry you're mistaken.  The rules haven't changed regarding players' positions at kick-offs and re-starts.  All players of the team not kicking off shall be at least ten yards away from the ball and in their own half, hence the purpose of the centre circle.  The only change to this that I know to is that now the player receiving the ball at kick-off may stand within playing distance of the ball in his opponents half.  If the law has changed further then I apologise.

When I looked Glenn was in our half on his own at one stage, even the ref was up close to where our players were celebrating.

Only time I can remember a controversial re-start was England-Argentina in 2006. We thought we had scored in extra time (think it was Sol Campbell). It was ruled out and Argentina re-started while we were still celebrated and almost made something of it.

Small Heath ladies scored an injury time goal to "win" a game only for Liverpool to kick off and wallop the ball into an empty net to equalise, with the keeper frantically running back after sprinting the length of the pitch to join in the celebrations.

This happened ages ago but I only stopped laughing the other day......

Now I think about it, I believe the rules are that you can restart if the opposition have all left the field of play to celebrate.
After Hutton's wonder goal against Blues, Chester made a point of standing in the field of play while pretty much everyone else was three rows into the Holte. I can't remember completely about Saturday – I was too busy celebrating – but do remember thinking that Steer shouldn't have crossed the halfway line to join the players near the dugout and given them a chance to try it on.

You can re-start if you're all in your own half. QPR we were wrongly denied a quick re-start. Away at Small Heath we denied them by one of ours standing in their half.

We were 4-1 up at h/t 2014ish when Benteke scored an overhead kick.
Ironically, the last time we were 4-0 up at h/t at home was against our next opponents in 88/89.
Then a matter of weeks later we managed to better that by one.

There are a few comments on here about the 2nd goal. For me it was as good as any you'll see in any division any time. Getting out of a tricky defensive position, Whelan moving it quickly out to Hourihane then to Elmo, who put in one of the most delicious crosses I've ever seen - all credit to him. Tammy couldn't miss. Goal of the match for me, maybe of the season.

We normally park right where the one set of 4 Way lights were, so thinking it would be pretty horrific afterwards, we parked further up the road and got out easily.

We stayed well after the final whistle when Jack and Tyrone were acknowledging the Holte.

Well actually yes, in hindsight it reads very badly and so I apologise. I watched the video and noted how repetitive it was, and used his words as a springboard to a wider rant about vloggers, but that personalised it which was not my intention; he personally is not the target of my ire. I didn't rate his film but I wish him no ill and of course I don't begrudge anyone a hobby. I do have issues with the whole culture of vlogging and I do think that broadcasting anything, anywhere, carries a level of responsibility, it was really that that I was targeting but I managed to get the focus all wrong. Reading it again tonight I'm kicking myself for a poorly judged post that's made me look an arse. Sorry for any offence caused.
