Meaning Evil reporting a five match contract til Jan,
Commencing after the ‘boro match.
Can’t do links sorry.
Might be a good move if Chester is playing through injury?
-
It’s fine. We’re in the shit as it comes to CB’s at the club. He was decent as a player before, a cock off the pitch. But the circumstances back then was a ship not just sinking on and off the pitch, but also on fire with the players using pure gasoline to put it out. It’s over now. Hope is able to provide something to get us through to January. Him and Chester at the back, AT as a DM in front might be useful.
-
Hopefully, as its only until the new year, we already have someone lined up to come in.
-
I think his willingness to train with us for all these weeks on the off chance, and then sign a 5 week contract shows a good attitude. It’s comforting to have other options in the middle of defence.
-
He's certainly needed here. Maybe time to forgive and forget his last spell here off the pitch, second chances and all that.
-
Some quotes from The Daily Mail (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-6446623/Free-agent-James-Collins-agrees-FIVE-WEEK-deal-Aston-Villa.html?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490) article
"The former Wales international has been training with the club since September and Smith has now sanctioned a short-term contract."
"It is expected he will sign next week and be under consideration for the game against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Friday. He is not in the squad for this Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough."
"The situation will be assessed again when the winter transfer window opens."
-
He's a twat.
-
He sure is. I will hold my nose if he keeps us in touch with the top 2 until Christmas rolls around.
-
I don’t like him either, but he serves a purpose for five games.
-
Thanks to fistface, we're doing what we have to do. Pragmatic on the part of Smith.
-
This is presumably just for cover: Chester is captain, and Tuanzebe has been the better of the two, so would Smith drop one for Collins? He's not obviously an upgrade on either.
-
It make sense I suppose and we might well need him over the next few weeks.
-
If Chester isn't fit though then it allows us to at least mix it up.
-
Nyland probably shitting himself more now, when he sees all the headed own goals from a few years back!
-
He is wank but i suppose it's an understandable move for a handful of games until January. I certainly didn't want him handed a season contract back in September.
-
If he can shore up our defence, allowing us to take 15 points then why not? I don't give a fuck if he's a twat as long as he stops opposition twats from scoring and distributes the ball to our players in a non-twattish manner.
-
It's much the same as Pires - a short-term move to get us out of a short-term problem.
-
Wow, welcome to Villa James!
-
it’s reportedly a 5 week contract not a season long one on big bucks
I hope Villa have moved into a more sensible time with this sort of thing now which will make a change from times past
-
It's much the same as Pires - a short-term move to get us out of a short-term problem.
Hopefully with a bit more success than that particular example.
-
Anybody fancy a bet on how many games he plays in that five weeks? My money is on three with a saver on two.
-
A word of explanation because I back DS totally. I doubt that he is match fit and at this time of year in winter conditions injuries come thick and fast.
-

Yes he was awful we actually paid for a taxi to and from London every day.
-
He's a massive twat but thanks to spuddy we don't have a fat lot of choice. I doubt he'll play much as he'll be cover, and I hope he doesn't. Pisses me off though that we have little choice but to top up that wankers pension pot.
-
A temporary move that makes total sense
What exactly happened with Sid? i mean as in actually happened not just rumours
-
Excluding one incident that very few know the full details of, he’s always seemed OK. Welcome back Collins.
-
Did he make some inappropriate remarks when he left?
-
Collins is a good option at this stage. We've no other choice until January. I don't get the derogatory comments??
-
According to reports he got into a scuffle with Gordon Cowans at a club training camp. He was also a bit of a twat when he came back with West Ham, making some choice comments to the Lower Trinity.
-
There was also the nightclub incident with Chris Herd and Snakeboy.
-
Would rather get the JCB out and pull Dicke Dunne out of Burger King personally.
-
Couldn't we have just rehired Chris Samba?
-
For five weeks it's a sensible deal as an emergency until we can get someone in January.
My hope is that he won't be needed with Jedinak back.
-
He played top division football last season and for many seasons before that. He knows the game and what to do. He's a useful addition for the next 5 weeks because, let's face it, we're fucked if we get injuries. He'll have also been useful in training for the front players to play against.
-
Absolutely. Under the circumstances it's hard to see why anyone would be against this move.
-
I think his behaviour last time he was at the club is a valid reason to be less than thrilled. It's quite legitimate to wonder if there might be another decent available centre half who didn't once punch a club legend.
-

Totally agree, no brainer to me!
If Axel or Chester had got injured on Saturday then Jedi would have had to come on although still 'injured' and definitely not match fit!
-

Of course it is. But he has been training with the team for the while now and is the obvious answer to help get us through a potential short term problem.

Yes, but you said it was hard to see why anyone would be against it so I gave you a cracking good reason why. And you agreed. So it's not hard at all.

Right, as at today's date when ideally we need cover this week I suspect other options are extremely limited to non existent. There's certainly no other experienced operators available who are fit and already familiar with the current squad and systems as Collins will be having trained with us. So, given the choice of nobody or a player who has been training with the club for a few months, I still can't see why anybody would be against it under the current circumstances. So yeah, even if you don't like him (which I can understand) I do find it hard to understand why you would be against the short term move.
-
We need cover at centre half and he provides cover at centre half. This deal is not a problem for me.
-
5 week deal is fine for me, perhaps Deano already has someone lined up to come to the club in January on a more long term basis.

it’s still a good reason and that’s what you asked for
the fact you don’t like the reason and argue against it is fair enough but it’s still a good reason none the less
and we haven’t seen him play yet
-
Given it's a few weeks I'll accept that it's about the best option but I can't be happy about it, he's a twat that I'd rather had nothing to do with the club.
-
Absolutely. Under the circumstances it's hard to see why anyone would be against this move.
We have worked hard over the last couple of years to rid the club of all the wasters, with only one knackered donkey left to get rid of. It goes against the grain to sign another ageing troublemaker. That said he's signed and if he plays I will support the managers decision but hopefully he will not get the call.
I feel that there may have been better options without the history, available for the short period we require him for.
-
Does anyone know for certain that he actually did what he's supposed to have done?
-

Something happened Dave, so are you telling us it didn't?
-
Well, there were public apologies from Dunne and Collins, and a statement from the club that they'd been fined for disciplinary offences.
-

The story went that Collins hit Sid, but nobody said so for certain. The published stories touched on a "heated argument" but I've not seen an actual assault claimed anywhere.
-
I sure it’s all water under the bridge anyway.
-

Yes, but apart from that? :-)
-
Has Collins actually signed this 5 week deal? Nothing on the OS?
-
I saw it on a twitter link to the Evening Mail, so presumed it was safe to post as ‘news’
-

Indeed. Wasn't he pissed up and rowing with bouncers in town a few months later as well?
That, and his comments when he left in 2012 (about him never wanting to leave West Ham in the first place) make this an odd one. Even allowing for our current lack of options.
Getting rid back then and getting any sort of money for him at all was one of Lamberk's better deals.
-
There's nothing daft about a 5 week deal for an experienced, fit player.
-
Does anyone know for certain that he actually did what he's supposed to have done?
I know with a degree of certainty that he actually didn't do what he was supposed to for the majority of his last stint; defend properly. I suppose he's not alone in that regard over the past decade and more, although he does have these allegations to his name on top of that.
Like i say though, i won't get my knickers in a twist for 5 games. I would expect he'll be a better option than Jedinak there but i doubt if he is called upon he'll put in the kind of performances that will have many people clammering for us to sign him for longer.
-
Just watched DS interview for Friday's match and it would appear that Collins hasn't signed a deal (as Collins hasn't got the match fitness required) yet?! Looks as though the report in the Mail was either wrong or at best premature.
-
The Mail wrong???? Well if that’s true I really don’t know what to believe anymore 😁
-
The Mail wrong , you say, whatever next you'll be telling me that WM is impartial or that the Government knows what it is doing!
Shirley shum mishtake there
-
Still not signed (DS press Conference) I think he is still carrying an injury. At least Jedinak is back training …...
-
I think we’ll only sign him if we get another defensive injury.
-
It's much the same as Pires - a short-term move to get us out of a short-term problem.
Hopefully with a bit more success than that particular example.
I'm sure Collins can get up the pitch for a corner in less than ten minutes.
-
Mirror reporting that James Collins tore up his £50k contract literally an hour after signing it! This was due to picking up another injury (calf) when he went out to train. He's gone up massively in my estimation - by refusing to be paid whilst injured. This action could yet see DS offering him another deal when he regains fitness. Are you watching Micah Richards??
-
If we have given him a contract worth £50k a week if he plays or not, then we really haven’t learned a lot.
-

Two hundred grand a month for a 35-year-old who was released by his previous club? I can't see it myself.
-

Indeed, what a mental thing to do given our circumstances
-
Maybe it was 50k for a couple of months? It just say "50k contract" in the original post.
-

Yes, I'd say that was probably for 5 weeks. So £10k a week.
-
It doesn't seem to bother Micah Richards conscience by picking up a rumoured £60k per week for doing nothing! I can't believe that the club can't cancel his contract after being out injured for getting on for 2 years! You may as well stick all that money in a pit and burn it! A disgrace.

If that is true then that is excellent by Collins. With that said, now we are this close to the transfer window I'd be looking elsewhere.
-
10k a week for 5 weeks, not 50k a week. Even that soft ****** Lerner wouldn't have paid that.
-
This is Aston Villa we are the most used club in the land. I thought Purslow said the days of handing big contracts to ageing players was finished! Obviously not!

I wouldn’t call £10k a week for 5 weeks a big contract.
-
Hold on. Does anyone truly believe we have a 35 year footballer who prior to training with us was probably on a PFA pension $50k a week to train with us? Come on everyone...

The clue is in bold - the contract is worth £50k, not £250k.
At least, it better be!!!

This is becoming quite a club. Ivo Stas, David Unsworth, James Collins...

Irony and/or sarcasm doesn't really work on the interweb does it?
-
Surprised no-else has commented on this but he was really rather good yesterday in a bald fat James Collins sort of way. Fair play to him, he’s an old pro and he gave it everything although he was breathing out of his arse after 10 minutes. Shame we couldn’t have had him for a few weeks to give Chester a rest but I suppose he’s guaranteed a start at Ipswich. I admire players at his age who still desperately want to play.
-
I don't know, we could have had 6 or 7.
-
Even with our shit defence, I don't think he would have improved us.
-
I had no idea he had signed for anyone before seeing him appear on the pitch on Saturday. He played well, I thought. Certainly better than most of his abysmal teammates.
-
I thought he did well, a similar performance to Elphicks at the other end, his positioning was excellent, his won most of his aerial battles but struggled with balls down the side of him.
He seemed to be feeling his calf for most of the second half, whilst he did well I don’t think we missed out.

Fully agree with your assessment.
I had no idea it was Colllns himself until the second half when I could see his name on the shirt. I just thought they had a chunky bald left sided defender who was good in the air but sluggish.

James talks very fondly of his time at Villa on the latest episode of Elis James' Feast of Football podcast:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05cmk38
He believes that he played his best football playing alongside Dunne and under MON. Surprisingly, he came across very well - I'm surprised that he and Hutton are still looking for a club.
-
The story he tells at 39 minutes about his training/mini-contract with us last year will change a few minds, I'd imagine.
-
Anything about the bust up with Sid?
-
Is there anything about how he now plans to use his 50p shaped head now he isn’t using it to miss 4-yards-out headers from corners?
-
I’d love to know definitively about the Sid thing. Every time I hear him speak he seems sound enough but the Sid stuff is there in the background. How sure are we about it?
-

Wasn't it pretty widely reported at the time? We went on a spa break when there wasn't any games, night off and there was slanging match involving him, Delph and Sid and a few of the coaching staff. This was in Houllier season.
Anyway Collins was a decent CB. Could get found out against sides with quick strikers with good movement but brilliant against the hoofball teams. Him and Dunney were rocks in 09/10 for vast majority of the season.
Different times of course judging whether the CBs we had at the time were good enough to get us in the top 4.
-
Didn't we sign Warnock, Collins and Dunne on deadline day? I think they all made their debuts in a win away to Small Heath. They were all excellent in their first season but didn't do the business for us once MON left. I remember one night game at Villa Park (possibly under McLeish) in which Warnock had a nightmare and was getting pelters from the crowd.
I saw James Collins in Solihull town centre once pushing a kid in a pushchair. Given the allegations I should clarify he was pushing the pushchair and at no point actually pushed the kid.
-
Well thanks for putting our minds at rest.
-
I remember one night game at Villa Park (possibly under McLeish) in which Warnock had a nightmare and was getting pelters from the crowd.
QPR I think.
-
Don't think Warnock ever recovered from a poor game in the league cup final. Started off very well but like pretty much all our left backs was a nervous wreck for rest of his career here.
-
Is there anything about how he now plans to use his 50p shaped head now he isn’t using it to miss 4-yards-out headers from corners?
I arched an eyebrow Roger Moore style at this, then I realised I could only actually recall him scoring one header in a crap 1-0 home win against a Pardew Newcastle. The only other thing I remember was Shefki Kuqi coming on. Sat right behind the dugout I remember Pardew's final instructions were "we need a goal, get us a facking goal". Lol
-
The genius of Alan Pardew.

Bolton game.
-
Warnock was played in midfield in that match; he hit the bar in the first half and scored our goal in the second half. he had a pretty decent game.
-
I remember at some point in his time with us, Warnock developed a horrible habit of giving needless free kicks away in dangerous areas.

Must be the first time Sidwell has ever been the 'and' in a 'ginge and x' equation.
-
He also said recently in an interview( might be this one actually )that Dean Smith signed him back for us on loan. But he got an injury on first training session, so tore up his conttract. Fair play
-
Forgot about that, thought it was a myth.
O'Neill's methods in the late 00s were already getting on for 20 years out-of date. Nice quip to the lot who played in Moscow...he was at it again tonight not too impressed with Upamecano.
-
Didn’t collins have a set to with Cowans?
-
It all sounded very professional didn't it? No wonder tens of millions got spaffed up the wall.
-
Didn’t collins have a set to with Cowans?
Collins & Dunne from memory, one of those team building events where far too much booze got consumed
I liked Collins, very limited with the ball from memory but replacing him with flaky concrete Ron didn't work out at all. Ripping up his contract that time he got injured shows him as an alright sort.
