WEMBERLEY!!!!!!!!!!
-
When's the next round ?
-
To be fair I thought some of our second string players looked good. Closer than it should have been but job done. Good job. Steer in particular looked great.
-
The reserves made hard work of it.
-
Like passing a kidney stone.
-
We won but it wasn't pretty. Steer saving us more embarrassment with that cracking save. The treble is still on.
-
We aren't fun to watch are we.
-
Disgrace, don't care about the weather or line up, but no corners?
Bruce out.
-
W/c August 21st... unless we play Grimsby as that's when their First Round match is being replayed.
-
The Beeb are saying this is going to Extra Time?
-
This time last year we didn't have a point in the league and we were knocked out of the cup by Luton....so I guess we're better, sort of.
-
A win's a win but, Christ that was dire.
-
Bearing in mind the terrible conditions and the team being littered with debutants (or close to) then I don't think we can moan too much. Job done.
-
Made hard work of it, but we played a bunch of kids. F#ck it, we won and that's all that matters.
-
Two well matched sides. Colchester don't spend much and poor Steve Bruce is obviously working under League One conditions. Good result for plucky Aston Villa.
-
The Beeb are saying this is going to Extra Time?
That's the bullshit in post match.
-
BBC says match going to extra-time.
My heart sank a little. For a moment.
-
I'm being a miserablist tonight.
Another performance that offers fuck all confidence that we are developing into a team that will challenge this season.
Far too many individual mistakes, too many individuals who really do not look good enough, even against 4th division opponents.
-
I thought their were a few positives tonight, we won yay. Also O'Hare looked good and the lad on loan from Spuds looks like he can beat a man and pass the ball.
Good to see the youngsters see a game out unlike some of the displays of the past.
Not all doom and gloom as many on here think it is.
-
Disgrace, don't care about the weather or line up, but no corners?
Bruce out.
I love a good corner. Gutted.
-
Made hard work of it. We simply don't have any strength in depth. Too many average players playing under an average manager.
-
Thank God for Steer ensuring we avoid humiliating headlines. One corner in the whole game against League 2 opposition and we even made a complete pig's ear of that. Utter pants.
-
The Beeb are saying this is going to Extra Time?
That's the bullshit in post match.
Like the claim we had no corners.
-
Just happy we got through. Seems like ages since we won a game in this cup?!
When is the draw, tonight or tomorrow?
-
Disgrace, don't care about the weather or line up, but no corners?
Bruce out.
I love a good corner. Gutted.
If you ever see one, give us a shout!
-
Still can't do the basics required of any decent footballing team.
But we won.
-
Only good thing about that is the monkey off the back of some of our most promising youngsters for years. RHM, Davis and Ohare are as good as weve developed for a long time. RHM has speed and skill, Davis is going to be a lump nuisance, and Ohare a touch of class. Not pretty but very promising
-
Pedestrian and low on energy, sums up our style of play really.
-
Just happy we got through. Seems like ages since we won a game in this cup?!
When is the draw, tonight or tomorrow?
Our last win was sha September 2015. Draw is tomorrow.
-
Jed Steer Man of the match...says it all.

Ah forgot about that one. I thought Orient was the year before Luton.

We're not premier league! No fkn way.
-
It was okay. Just shows we really haven't got much of a squad once the 1st choices are out or indeed with them. A few injuries and we're in deep trouble in the league. End of the day its a win but on a list of priorities this comes way way down the pack. I don't want this cluttering up our fixtures and bringing injuries at the expense of the league so hopefully we can bow out soon to a half decent team and concentrate on the main prize.
-
It's not great when your keeper is MOTM against a crap division 4 side.
-
6603 attendance
Massive respect to all our boys who went down there tonight.
-
Should have made it easier for ourselves than we did and some brilliant keeping kept us in it but good to be in the next round.
-
The Beeb are saying this is going to Extra Time?
Disgrace ! I demand part of my license fee back !
(The proceeds of which I can put with the 92p per week council tax I want back for my bins not being collected! )
-
Onomah should start Saturday, he looks composed on the ball and is a physical presence. A million miles ahead of Bacuna.
O'Hare played well and offered something different with a bit of flair and creativity. He should be on the bench at least Saturday.
Samba can't run.
Green was disappointing.
Hourihane barely touches the ball in open play and only looks dangerous when we have a set piece.
Bjarnasson is rubbish.
Made hard work of it but we won away on Sky!
-
fair play to Jed, kept this shocking bunch in it tonight.
Come on me boys Saturday at Cardiff!!
-
Are people forgetting the team we put out tonight? Some stupid reactions on here.
-
Only saw last half hour but Hourihane only seemed bothered when he was running onto ball near their box. Looked tidy then mind but I'd be expecting a lot more when facing his back four. Still can't figure out why he is playing in right centre midfield again under Bruce, can anyone?
Good to see De Laet back involved. Good few kids got game time. Davis does give a physical presence up top. Onomoah certainly looks a talented kid.
-
Conditions were awful, but we do like to make it hard for ourselves, couldn't hold the ball upfront and midfield went awol in the second half. Well done Steer, good to be in the hat for the next round.
-
Not impressed with green. Think he's well overrated
-

Agree with all of that.
-
He looked ok when he picked up the ball and took it forward, revolutionary!

I see it as game time for all the fringe players and youngsters. Not worth putting out your so called best eleven.

Thanks berneboy
Not many points in GTC this evening. But we're still in the Cup!
Stand by for GTC 2 Villa v Norwich!
-
That was real alehouse football. And not even a good alehouse. The Old Roebuck in Erdington, or The Gunner in Edinburgh. The latter of which had to be seen to be believed. No windows, or natural light of any sort.
Very little light this evening.
O'Hare? Yeah.
The rest - Meh.
-
We're not premier league! No fkn way.
If I recall we got relegated in the 2015-16 season. Just before the silly money became insane.
-
Bruce just said Bacunas off pretty much. Will make a few happy at least
-
With the lack of a reserve league its been useful for the players returning.
-

yep, but we all know what will happen if we progress and draw a big team. We won't play the reserves and youngsters against them and its an unwanted distraction this season. A cup run is nice but not at the expense of promotion
-
How did Murphy play?

That could happen after a round or two (or a bloody local derby!).
-
RHM looked up for it when he came on and it was good seeing DeLeat making a return. Bjork isn't a full back or much of a footballer at all really. There was far too much sloppiness all over the place even allowing for the conditions. Onomah was very good.
-
How did Murphy play?
Did nothing at all of note.
Apart from skin a defender and set up a good chance.
-

Yeah, he did alright.
-
He did skin a division 4 player and set up a chance, both with no outcome.
File with Stefan Moore, nothing to see here.
-
Steer - Excellent.
Chester - Solid.
Samba - Dodgy first 20 but after that good.
Bjarnason - Excellent considering he was at LB.
Bree - Decent.
Hourihane - Very poor.
Adomah - Looked lively, needs more game time.
Onomah - Excellent feet, good movement but lacked final ball.
Green - Needs to do a lot better, poor.
O'Hare - Played really well but faded after 65/70.
Hogan - Hard worker, if only the others could play the ball earlier.
Davis - Didn't offer anything coming on.
RHM - Good movement and pacey.
De Laet - Got 9 mins under his belt.
-
How did Murphy play?
Did nothing at all of note.
Beat a man and put a good cross in, put himself about a bit.
-

If I recall we got relegated in the 2015-16 season. Just before the silly money became insane.
Aspirations.
Shooting forward to recent history I had aspirations when Lerner took control. I had aspirations when he finally left. I had hopeful optimism when Dr.T took control. The trend is that over the course of 20-30yrs I am being forced to divorce from aspiration.
-
What happened to the Hourihane we signed from Barnsley?
He isn't the same player surely.
-
Some folk seem to be trying to beat each other to the punch and write off the youth, until these lads get 25 starts under their belts we can't tell anything yet.
-

Yet look at the amount of money we have spent over the past season.

We are where we are, nowhere near good enough, yet. I live in hope.
-
I'm happy with all the youngsters tonight, Davis wasn't great but still put himself about. We played 5 teens tonight and they all did okay.
-
A win's a win but, Christ that was dire.
This...hey ho. Onamah looked very very good. O'Hare as well until he faded 2nd half.
-
What happened to the Hourihane we signed from Barnsley?

I thought he was ok tonight and he's a much better alternative to Lansbury for me.
-
If our teens can't shine against a shocking division 4 side then god help us.
Doing alright won't wash it.
-
Good job they work as footballers and not cleaners then.
-
He did skin a division 4 player and set up a chance, both with no outcome.
File with Stefan Moore, nothing to see here.
Nobs suits you sir
-
Job done.
Highlights for me Steer's penalty save and Ohare second half.
On way home and trying to dry off on the train!!
-
I thought we did okay at the start. We moved it around lovely. Then we seem to revert to hoofing it and the nice touches went for the mid part. We always seem to be clinging on for the final whistle without any belief that we will be ok. Sloppy possession at times - we'd win a decent ball just to try a hollywood pass and then lose it again...
But we won - yay!
-
Cleaners can still perform with copious amounts of surface water.
-
If our teens can't shine against a shocking division 4 side then god help us.

You are on a au contraire mission tonight Nobs.
-
O'Hare was the big plus tonight. He was straight out of the trap and hopping all over the pitch. Lot of potential there.
-

Yes, I was very impressed too.
What a shit game that was, though. Since relegation, we seem to be on the telly all the time, and pretty much every time we just remind people of how glad they are they don't have to watch us stinking out the premier league any more.
Through to the next round and a good run out for the second string, yes, but fuck me, it'd be nice to see a convincing performance from us - say, once every six or seven months or so.

Agreed. To be fair I thought in spells we looked really good. Those spells were far too few though considering the opposition.
-

-
Oh, and I appreciate he was out of position, but I am yet to see anything to suggest signing Barnason was a good idea.

I think it might be a more realistic aspiration.

He'd only moan that the Moon wasn't made out of the right cheese and the stick gave him a splinter. Some people are never satisfied.
-
Oh, and I appreciate he was out of position, but I am yet to see anything to suggest signing Barnason was a good idea.
I thought he was extremely dodgy tonight but he looked better in final stages when Bree went to left back and played further forward.
-
Just simply not good enough for us to not play for 90 minutes again, not looking forward to Saturday at all now.
-

Nonsense, we'll batter Cardiff 1-1
-
Looking forward to watching Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce combine their talents to create a footballing feast for the ages.

They're not mutually exclusive. I'd bet that over the years, our Cup runs haven't been detrimental. Wasn't there, but kept us up '57? Inspired promotion '75? Kept us up 2015?
Supporters aren't disappointed by them, and surely all players want to actually try to win things?
-

I thought he was extremely dodgy tonight but he looked better in final stages when Bree went to left back and played further forward.
He didn't do a single thing right all night. Bree played him a cracking ball towards the end of the second half, but he just passed it tamely to a Colchester player.
-
Looking forward to watching Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce combine their talents to create a footballing feast for the ages.
This is the best thing I've read tonight...

I don't feel BB should be deployed as a Defender such as this left back role . He escapes critics from me as he was playing there for team and is no defender. I like to see him given a go in middle or further up and looked far more effective when he was pushed further forward. It's not fair for him.
Great to see De Laet back and O'Hare in particular was most impressive though he faded. Really pleased for Steer and was awarded man of match I think ?! Also Hulk scoring was good and hoped heppy murph would have had more game time. Green not one for crossing well and adomah easied back in.
Onomah was far better than cameo other day and would start him on Saturday .
Nice little win and Samba showed why no one has been interested in signing him but great as a back up as were others on show.
Wonder if RDL can be used as a left back as looks useful or Bree to play there and these to compete with taylor. Hutton seems to own right back though long season .
All in all win and some positive. We can all applaud that deft back heel O'Hare did was magic !
Utv ! Now back to league business!
-
Disgraceful that it's not on telly, really. And yet they have chosen Barcelona vs Real Madrid on Sunday. Twats.
-
Just simply not good enough for us to not play for 90 minutes again, not looking forward to Saturday at all now.
Cracking stuff.
-
Just simply not good enough for us to not play for 90 minutes again, not looking forward to Saturday at all now.
Stop being a **** Nobs. It was 95 minutes.
-
Steer was better tonight than any match Johnstone has played for us yet.
Still, at least we're helping Bruce's old club out a bit.
-
Looking forward to watching Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce combine their talents to create a footballing feast for the ages.
Reminds me of Lippi v Scolari matches. Pure indulgence for us punters.
-
There were positives as mentioned but we won with an offside goal and a man of the match performance from our keeper. Says it all really. I thought Bruce was chucking on too many youngsters in the 2nd half, when we needed to hold steady.
-
Steer was better tonight than any match Johnstone has played for us yet.
Still, at least we're helping Bruce's old club out a bit.
Yes that was my thought also whilst watching. Not sure why we should be developing someone else's player whilst we have an equally good one?
-
Still, putting aside my usual piss-taking, normally we make about three changes and get knocked out. Today we made nine changes and went through.
It'll do.
-
Good things: The Play House pub, £15 a ticket, a new stadium I hadn't been to, our support, O'hare, the young Spurzz lad and Steer, through to the next round.
Bad things: The monsoon that enveloped the stadium, Samba, Hourihane and gutted to say Green. Not knowing if Hogan will ever be a 20 goals a season striker for us and suspecting that he won't. On a personal level realizing that I have a coat and several pairs of Adidas trainers older than some of our players.😢
-
i honestly think the weather was a proper leveller tonight though
the conditions meant we could bring them right down to our normal level of performance
-
Looking forward to watching Neil Warnock and Steve Bruce combine their talents to create a footballing feast for the ages.
Sultans of Boof.
-
Fuck me that was a road trip and a half! Another ground done, and one I hope I don't have to go to again. Still, we're through and that was the objective. Night y'all
-
We need to start taking our chances and being more clinical in front of goal. A typical example was Hogan tonight where he decided to try and dribble through a crowded 6 yard box rather than hit it first time on the volley after their keeper saved Adomahs effort. Its early days and I hope he proves me wrong, but unfortunately I don't think Hogan is going to make it at Villa.
-
thought that we were a bit lucky to win in the 90mins
Steer / Bree / the lad from Spurs and also O'Hare (who reminded me of the lead singer of the Associates - Billy Mackenzie - for those of you who remember them) did well
Samba looked frightened to death of having the ball at his feet, and he will struggle at Championship level this season.
Best news of the night about Bacuna leaving - lets hope for a few more going!!
-
Highlight of the night was the absence of Micah Richards, it was nice to see a few youngsters getting game time rather than fat wasters.
-
Pleased to see the manager give opportunities to the youngsters and I think they can all be relatively happy with themselves on an individual basis. A scratch side plus tough conditions contributed it to being fairly mundane overall but interspersed with the odd touch of excitement.
-
Steer was better tonight than any match Johnstone has played for us yet.
Still, at least we're helping Bruce's old club out a bit.
Yes that was my thought also whilst watching. Not sure why we should be developing someone else's player whilst we have an equally good one?
Or how about.....Steer has been out for the best part of two years and no-one knows how good he is/might be. he looked good in one game which is promising, so we signed another keeper who already knows the club on loan with an option to buy of we want, but if Steer makes it then we may not need to?
-
Horrible conditions to play in but nice to win and a few real positives. I questioned why we were getting an untested kid in on loan whilst we have our own academy but it was plain to see his quality and what he'll bring this season. Onomah was head and shoulders above anyone else on the pitch and he should walk into the team on Saturday.
-
Only saw the second half, but the positives for me were Onomah, O'Hare and Steer. On the flip side I'm not sure what Hourihane does, and I felt Samba was a bit ropey.
Don't think the conditions helped at all either but we're through and we now need to go and win an away game in the league, 2 opportunities in the space of 4 days.
-
they adapted to the conditions better than we did but we won which is all that counts really. Samba was frighteningly shite.
-
Listened on BBC Essex and their commentators were good to listen to and fair - not partisan ( unlike that game at Leeds last season )
Its seems like Colchester had a number of chances that they wasted, like we did on Saturday.
It was a game to "blood" some younsters, in appalling conditions. Doubt that they will play in rain like that too often
But it was still blooming Colchester for effing sake! ::)
-
the spurs lad was really good in parts he needs to start this weekend and our lad from the associates looked good.
Steer showing hes a good No 2 and Hogan scored .
Green Im not seeing what he brings to the party fears two at the moment but time will tell.
Barnsley must have sold us somebody who isn't Houriane . Thor was left back so will give him the benefit .
the conditions were horrendous so getting through at this stage is the main thing.
-

Get that but How is Steer going to make it if he doesn't get regular first team football? How about Steer being first choice and loanee on the bench?

Based on one game against lower league opposition? Very risky in my view and Bruce would get slaughtered, particularly on this site, if Steer had a couple of dodgy games.
I think like any player returning from long term injury there has to be a degree of management around his reintegration into first team football.
-

I might as well just quote you as you posted exactly what I was thinking. The only thing I would add is if we should worry that our goalkeeper was man of the match in a cup tie against a team two leagues below us.

A slight worry, maybe, but I felt against a team 2 divisions below, the weather meant the pitch became a bit of a leveller. I'm not one for excuses but the amount of standing water meant at times there was no flow whatsoever when passing along the deck.
-
Glad we are in the next round did enough to win my man of the match Jed Steer for me.
-
He did skin a division 4 player and set up a chance, both with no outcome.
File with Stefan Moore, nothing to see here.
Have you written off O'Hare yet?
-
I'd just close the youth academy. Stefan Moore didn't turn out as well as we'd hoped so I doubt we will ever produce a good young player again.

That'll happen after the weekend.

Was Darren Byfield the second Stefan Moore or was that Luke?
-
If we're going chronologically Stefan Moore was the second Darren Byfield.
-
So does that make O'Hare about the twelfth Martin Carruthers?

It was a reference to Murphy, who delightfully skinned a player and set up a chance.

I know. O'Hare has the potential to be the next Stephen Cooke or John McGrath.

I think that's a really good assessment. I would say Samba was poor all through the first half and I think excellent is pushing it with Bjarnasson but he was no where near as bad as many have suggested. He had a couple of really bad moments first half but otherwise defended and played the ball around as well as Taylor does. Otherwise virtually spot on for me.

Wasn't a stunning performance but we got the job done and i think we all learned a lot about some of the squad players. So all in all a good nights work
Steer 8 (excellent)
Birkir 5 (i'll let him off seeing as he was playing out of position though)
Chester 7 (steady)
Samba 5 (as i feared, useful heading away punts into the box, but will get torn a new arsehole by any nippy strikers this season)
Bree 6 (steady, still more to come from him)
Albert 6 (bit lacklustre, to be expected after being out so long i reckon)
Hourihane 5 (my biggest disappointment of the night, he can do so much more. an that's down to him to show not Bruce)
Onomah 8 (very promising)
Green 6 (another i felt slightly let down by)
Hogan 6.5 (did his job)
O'Hare 8 (highlight of the night)

These days I don't think you can afford to play two players like Green and Adomah as wide midfield players. Also, it pushed Hourahan deeper where he is less effective. I think Green should be played as a 2nd striker so he gets into the positions where we scored the first goal from or a bit wider in a front three.
I felt that in making so many changes, Bruce was giving chances to players but in some cases didn't play players in their best positions so it turned into a bit of a negative.
-
i honestly think the weather was a proper leveller tonight though
the conditions meant we could bring them right down to our normal level of performance
Why do you bother when everything we do at present appears to make you miserable.
-
If we had rested as many players last season then we would have had the likes of Richards in central defence, Bun in goal and Westwood in the middle of the park, plus the kids would have been a year younger and we would almost certainly have lost.
OK so we stuttered to a win against Colchester, and the Villa should be beating them easily, but it is still improvement over last season.
Positives
Hogan for all his faults does work hard, and it was nice to see him score. With better service he will improve.
Steer looks a lot better than Bun, and on that form better than Johnstone as well.
Onomah looks like he offers something different to a very samey set of midfield options.
Negatives
Bit disappointed with Green and Samba (though he did improve as the game wore on).
I thought Bree did OK, Adomah made chances and Chester was good as usual.
Not convinced with Bjorn or Hourihane as yet.

My twopennies worth - from the warmth and comfort of watching on TV in a pub
Weather was of biblical proportions and not surprised the football was not free flowing from either side
I see it is now a closer battle between Johnstone and Steer for the shirt and I am pleased to think if one is injured we are comfortable in that position
Hourihanne - Really hopeful he will come good but all the opportunity and evidence seems to the contrary
Good to see DeLaat back after a horrible injury - 3 mins in and I thought he had broke his leg after a very poor tackle
Green - I really do not see the adulation he gets is justified - I know he is young and home grown but I fail to see his key attributes - Speed / power / crossing / beating a man / vision - certainly not heading as we know :-[ so why he gets plaudits I don't know.
It is so difficult for promising kids to go on and have a career - again we seem to have some decent ones but time will tell if they actually make it - only game time will aloow that to happen
We were still "industrial" to watch but we are through - and that is all that matters
-
Most players should get a pass for last night given the conditions and that most players were either coming back from injury and/or inexperienced. Ideal test all things considered and got the win. It highlighted above all else that Samba cannot be our third choice centre half. I'd be thinking of letting RHM go on loan for a bit. If we cull the likes of McCormack we will surely be getting an experienced physical striker in as an option.
Green changed the Hull game when he came on last weekend so I wouldn't get too down on him for failing to make an impact last night. Young players will always be inconsistent and left wing is hardly his natural position. Onomoah and O'Hare pushed themselves into the midfield reckoning last night. No harm as Lansbury and Hourihane need to buck their ideas up quickly.

The ball held up out wide with the water.
Hard to read too much into it given the weather. Thought we passed it ok and counter attacked well. Should have finished it off at the start of the 2nd half. Good save from Steer who did well.
Last time it rained like that must have been Portsmouth away in the FA Cup where we drew 2-2. At least that was January.

Agree with Hookey on the observation on Green. I don't see what the fuss is but I'll concede he is young and needs games to develop. But for me he's in the Grealish class of "I know there is more there but..."

Green disappointed me. He did have a hand in the first goal so he gets some plus marks for that. But really, if he is to make a starting place he has to be able to take on and destroy 4 division defenders with either pace or trickery. He didn't. And, I see now why he missed that sitter to win us the Hull match, he can't head the ball with any accuracy or purpose.
-
not for the first time. He's a rabbit in the headlights.
-
Last night was a chance for Hourihane to show what he can do, but he didn't. Very poor. If there was a chance of selling him and getting Snodgrass in, I'd do it like a shot.

If our teens can't shine against a shocking division 4 side then god help us.
Doing alright won't wash it.
Yes how dare SB blood some of our youngsters and give them some vital experience for the future and to get a small assessment of their ability in shocking conditions when we have seasoned Pros like Micah Richards at the club.

I'm commenting on the match thread because that is what my post relates to.

OK I was being ironic if that helps, in my original post that you responded to.

The wettest I've ever been at a game was Leeds Road 1987. I was sixteen and there with Nev. I have never before or since that day had the fear that I may actually die of 'wetness'. Got to the coach and my programme was just a lump of paper mache and my beefburger was... well basically that was just a meat based version of paper mache. Nev was as sympathetic as you would expect a mate to be and pissed himself laughing. He might have actually have pissed himself literally, he was as wet as me so you wouldn't have been able to tell.
Aah, the good old days!

I think the result was everything last night. No kind of night for passing judgement on individuals. Wettest I have ever been was Leicester the year they went into receivership. Holes in the roof and blocked gutters over the away fans. We tried to escape from the torrents but the massed stewards pushed us back under the Filbert St. Niagara.
