Only started one of these before which was Luton away.  That didn't go well but can see this going a lot better.

3-0 win in front of 42K+.  Kodjia (2) and Grealish.

Nervy 2-1 or 1-0.

Which I'll gladly take right now. If we win that and scratch out a win in the Leeds game, we'll close the first half of the campaign out with 37 points and be unbeaten at home.

Which considering we have barely turned up this season is quite something. Any sort of upturn in form in the new year and we should be aiming for well  in excess of 40 points from the remaining games.  Manage that and -barring freakish form from the other contenders- we would be on course for the play-offs.

Games against the likes of Brighton, Wednesday, Norwich and Leeds are crucial. We have already fluffed our lines against three of that lot, we can't afford to keep on doing it.

not underestimating our opponents but we need to start beating teams by more than one. Laughable after the last 2 years i know, but I just have a feeling goal difference my be crucial  on D-day and ours is relatively weak. Are the play off semis random or 3 plays 6, 4 plays 5 like in the NFL?

On Boxing day in 2006 - Burton of the conference premier beat Tamworth away in front of just 2k, ten years later they are in the same league as us and set to play in front of their record league crowd. Hats off to Burton it's a great achievement none league to one below the prem in the space of 10 years.

They're a good attacking side with plenty of pace so if we're not on our game they will score, anyone thinking this plucky little outfit are coming for a draw think again. They are bringing the full allocation just short of 3k this should make for a great afternoon expecting a 4-3 or something ludicrous.

Yes, any Burton Albion fans reading this, we are arrogant.

Boxing Day should be a time for going to the match with your dad, so you can listen to him moaning about how nothing’s as good as it used to be while we draw 4-4 with Wolves in front of fifty thousand. Instead we get, and there’s no subtle way of putting it but what the FUCK are we doing playing Burton Albion in the league? It has to be some strange psychedelic experiment, that’s the only logical explanation. Still, we are and better make the best of it. Like all clubs with Albion in their name, well done to the plucky minnows for getting the act together and punching well above their weight. Bless. They’ll turn up in their thousands, some of them will know where their ground is and they’ll have a lovely time in the big city. They’ll probably go shopping as well. In 2007 their player of the year was goalkeeper Kevin Poole, who used to play for us just after the end of the Iron Age. He was 44 at the time. You can look at their current squad for as long as you like but unless you spend an unhealthy time watching that Channel Five programme on Saturday night you still won’t recognise any of them.

Without getting too dramatic about it the very fact that this match is taking place makes it one of the most embarrassing events in our history. The only way round that is a decent win. Nothing less than double figures will be good enough. In fact, if we don’t score at least five we should give them the points.

Things newfooty fans don’t know - As much about Burton Albion as I did two years ago. And I don’t want to have to find anything else, thank you very much.

I remember winning 4-0 against Everton around a decade ago, Baros scored with the most blatant handball since Diego took flight.

Was that Boxing Day?

The only Boxing day win that always immediately springs to mind was a 2-0 win at Derby after they'd just moved to Pride Park. Boateng and Taylor scored I think.

Best Boxing day for me was 1968 beating Cardiff 2-0.
The worst was 1992 at Coventry.

Us 10 - Them 1

We spend the whole of the post match thread complaining about the "schoolboy defending" that gave them the consolation goal.

Seriously can we PLEASE have a decent result at Christmas for a damn change?

Was it 1989 when we beat Arsenal and Man U at home in the space of a few Christmas days?

The very fact I still look back at that with great fondness is very telling, as it indicates NOTHING GOOD HAS HAPPENED FOR TWENTY SEVEN FUCKING YEARS NOW

Yes it was, my first two Villa games in a row as a 14 year old. Boxing Day and New Years Day, 3-1 (Man Utd) and 1-0 (Arsenal) spring to mind, without looking it up in advance...

I remember that too. Their fans were going mad about it, particularly at half-time when replays were shown on the big screen *chuckle*.

Got to sound a note of caution. This has got banana skin written all over it.

It will be like an FA cup tie against a lower league minnow and we all know how they've had a tendency to culminate in recent years!

The recent form guide suggests we should run out comfortable winners. Recent cup results suggest a giant-killing. If the players have the same level of complacency as some h&vers, then it could be tight.

That said it's Christmas, its Villa Park 2-0.

Best Boxing Day game of recent years was the 2-2 draw with Arsenal at home. We were 0-2 down despite battering them all first half. Zat Knight equalised in injury time and the ground exploded. That put us 4th in the table.

Best Boxing Day ever was the 3-0 v manure (followed up by the ny day 2-1 v arse). Never been so packed in tight on the Holte. Made even sweeter by the fact the old man came, he supports Man U. He had his sheepskin coat on and was standing next to a fella wearing a Barbour jacket! Only one winner there! Back end of the Queues from L and K met outside the front door of the Holte pub. We were queuing for K then saw a lad from school there and ended up going in L and only just made it in. Up there with my best ever Villa Park times. The belief of the crowd in both games was absolutely amazing. Fucked the Cockney Fuckers twice in a week!

I remember that the Holte was packed that day. I didn't see any of the first half because we could not get anywhere near a place on the terraces so we stood on the gangway with no view of the pitch. At half time people went off for a pie or a piss and we managed to get a space with a view. Thankfully it was 0-0 at half time so we saw all three goals in an inspired second half performance.

same. Spent the first half standing in the concourse behind the front third of terracing. Couldn't see anything until we managed to get a spot at half time. The old man was a teacher in Chelmsley back then and got spotted half a dozen times! 'Sir, we never knew you was a Villa fan!'

I think I might have posted this before, but I went to both them games and remember queuing up outside the Holte End for the Arsenal game. Before me in the queue was a really odd fella , who looked like a 70's Dr Who , resplendent in a full length Cream Mackintosh coat, holding a plastic Kwik Save carrier bag full of 2 pence pieces. He spent the whole time in the queue moaning about all the Gloryhunters (Villa fans) who only turned up for the big games. When he finally got to the turnstile , the operator told him he wasn't counting all that change now , he would have to come back when the queue had died down and presumably the sold out signs were put up.The guy who had probably queued up for the best part of an hour, walked off effing and jeffing down the Witton lane.
I always wondered if he managed to get in.

The 2-1 v Arsenal included my favourite David Platt goal when he dummied to shoot on his left from the edge of the box, sent half the Arsenal defence towards the Witton Lane and smashed it into the bottom corner with his right. At the Holte End too. He was magnificent that season.

I reckon he might rotate a bit between this and the Leeds game - two games in four days and we didn't do well when we had two games in three days recently

Grealish has to come in for me. Back four picks itself

Burton:

Jedinak Gardner - adomah grealish ayew - kodjia

Leeds:

Bacuna Jedinak Westwood - adomah kodjia grealish

If we can get a couple of goals up v burton I'd take Jedinak off

Although I think villa have been two up and comfortable once in the whole of 2016 so I wouldn't bet on it

BURTON Albion will make the trip to Villa Park on Boxing Day hoping to pick up their first away win of the season to give the Albion fans a late Christmas present.

Aston Villa come into the game off the back of a 1-0 win away to Queens Park Rangers last Sunday with summer signing Jonathan Kodjia scoring his 8th of the season since joining from Bristol City for a fee which could rise to £15 million.

Villa currently sit 13th in the Sky Bet Championship table with 31 points from their 22 games so far. They have drawn 10 games, the second most of any Championship side with Bristol City having one more with eleven.

Villa have impressive home form this season having not lost at Villa Park with five wins and five draws proving the game will be a difficult task for the Albion.

Nigel Clough’s men will head there hoping their good play in defeats against Huddersfield Town and Newcastle United will help them in the first competitive fixture between the two sides.

Defender Ben Turner could return to the squad following his two-match suspension whilst Brewers forward Jamie Ward, a former youth player at Villa, will be hoping to return to Nigel Clough’s line-up after being on the bench against Newcastle.

The Brewers boss said ahead of the game: “Steve Bruce has a big, big job. When a club has been in decline for a period time, not just a few months but last season and maybe a bit before as well it takes some turning around. You have to stem the tide of defeats, which he has done and start building from there. But it’s still early days for him and it will take maybe 18 months – you would expect them at the end of next season to be up there challenging.”

Stephen Martin will be the man with the cards at Villa Park. The Staffordshire-based referee has given 46 yellow cards so far this season, just an average of 2.5 per game. He has also brandished two yellow cards this season which both came in the same match between Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United.

Tickets will not be available on the day for supporters and with over 2,000 Brewers fans making the trip they’ll be plenty of noise in the away end.

In order to get fans to their seats in time for kick off, the TV’s in the lower tier (Q block) concourse will be turned off 15 minutes before kick-off  at Villa Park.

*Disclaimer – Boring Post Alert*

As we haven’t played Burton Albion in any meaning way until now, here is some of my general ramblings about Burton.
This isn’t the first time a team from Burton has been seen in the second tier of English football. Burton United were a football league side around the turn of the 20th century (which contained a few of our past fringe players like Chris Mann, Charlie Aston & Will Devey).

We’ve played in Burton a few times, mainly in the Bass Charity Vase. We won it in 1893 at Peel Croft, Burton, when Derby decided not to play extra time when we drew 2-2 the Final! We won it properly a year later, beating Stoke 4-0. Alas, we relinquished cup in 1895 going out in the semis to Leicester with a weakened team.

Some 90 years later and we were invited again to play for the now pre-season Bass Charity Vase. After losing the semi 1-2 to Derby (played at Gresley Rovers), our first meeting of our first eleven(ish!) with Burton Albion was the 3rd place play off for the 1985 Bass Charity Vase (Allen Evans & Paul Birch doing the necessary in a 2-1 win). The team of Poole, Norton, Gibson, Evans, Glover, McMahon, Birch, Shaw, Daley, Walker, Walters was quite strong.
The following year we again started the pre-season in the Bass Charity Vase. A 2-2 draw in the semis with Burton Albion, with Albion winning the shootout 4-5. Now, when in the next World Cup when Martin Keown commentates on a shootout and he states he’s never took a penalty in a shootout, feel free to correct him by saying that he put us out of the Final of the 1986 Bass Charity Vase by missing the sudden death pen. The baboon faced bastard.

However, the first time our paths crossed, was 02/09/1950 where our third team beat Burton Albion 2-0 in the Birmingham & District League (Arthur Proudler & Ray Spencer scoring). We played them in 6 consecutive seasons in the B&DL (3 Villa wins, 8 Burton wins, 1 draw. Our home games varying between Redditch, Somers’ in Halesowen or switched to Burton).

The only proper first team friendly encounter was pre-season was the 2-1 win in 2012. The only 3 players still on our books who played that day was Gabby, Gary Gardner and Alan Hutton. Hutton was then promptly bombed and was not to reappear in the first team until pre-season 2014.

The talk about the sellout has got a bit too Newcastle for my liking.

Hoping the game goes well though, we need to get on the tails of the top 6 soon.

3-1 Villa

Going back to that Man U game we could not get in so Damon climbed up the Holte End gate.  Clinging to the top of it he shouted a running commentary to the rest of us.

Good job it wasn't Theresa May up there.

"There are two teams playing"

"We will get the best result for Aston Villa"

"It will be a Claret and Blue fixture"

"Yes, but what the fuck is actually happening?"

Exactly. We haven't lost at home, they haven't won away. I'm going, it's got 0-1 written all over it!!

Burton about 9/2 at the bookies.

It could well be a draw if we don't get a early goal...I don't see them beating us though.

I didn't start this post with the intention of getting a load of useless puns.

But if we're drawing today with a few minutes left, we'll need one more try to seal victory.

Yes I know that's the worse pun of the lot!

Can't make the game? Why not settle down to your soothing Boxing Day log while listening to my coverage of the game courtesy of the H&V Match Thread. You'll find it here... http://www.mearnsfm.org.uk/listen-live   (http://www.mearnsfm.org.uk/listen-live)

Match updates interspersed with fine music (and some average to good tracks requested by your fellow H&Vers). Starts at 3pm.

Same team as last week

Bit surprised as we weren't great. Would definitely be starting grealish in home games.

Two up front should equal a threat. It very limited creativity
