I've literally got no idea about Barnsley or any of their players.

I really think it should be 433 or 4312. Wonder if McCormack will be fit? I'm guessing might be a bit early

I'd play baker for elphick. A decision about the third man in midfield and up front.

                   Gollini

Bacuna Chester baker cissokho

    Tshibola Jedinak grealish

      Kodjia gestede ayew

Of course, we are due to gel soon and give somebody an almighty spanking.

1-1

(Although it is Barsnley who have handed out a couple of spankings this season. Yes, I'm talking to you Dingles. And Rotherham).

First away game since The Scottish Managers first match at Fulham over 5 years ago. I've been to Oakwell a couple of times, I wonder if they still play that funny little song before the teams come out?

Anyway, no idea what sort of performance or indeed result to expect after yesterday but law of averages dictates that we are due a win.

1-0.

I know there's no such thing as a must win game but this is a must win game. Hopefully the 3-5-2 experiment has been well and truly binned after two awful outings and RdM will set us up like yesterday's second half. If we play like we did for the first 60 minutes yesterday we'll lose, play like we did for the last 20 minutes yesterday and we'll win. Carry forward the confidence of getting a late result - Villa to win 2-1

3-1 villa

                 Gollini

Westwood Chester baker Amavi

    Tshibola Jedinak grealish

      Kodjia gestede ayew

Westwood never gets dropped and hes a very below average midfielder , so just shove him RB

I prefer Rudy to come on to be honest but depends on RM being fit , would like to see H-M getting 30 minutes as well.

I reckon this will be the night when it clicks into place over 90 minutes....as long as there's a sensible starting team selection.

Barnsley are good going forward but leave a lot of space at the back so their games have plenty of goals at both ends.

Show them respect by playing three CMs...but surely Adomah-Kodjia-Ayew as a front trio would cause chaos on the counter attack. That's what I'd go for personally. Keep McCormack on the bench.

1-3 win.

It's tempting to say that away from home might be more easier.

The onus is generally on the home side to attack, so they should come at us more.

Problem is, when sides come at us -whether they be Luton, Bristol, Brentford or whoever- we generally fold. Forest didn't even need to have any sustained period of possession and still bagged two goals.

With our attacking threat, we should be on the front foot at home or away. If we do that, and go 2-0 up, we might have a chance.

As well as the rousing 20 minutes at the end of the Newcastle game, we also seemed to get a bit of luck defensively for the first time in ages.  Earlier in the season or last year that daft clearance from Bacuna gets put away.  Would be nice if we've turned a corner there n'all.

They're 3 wins out of 4 at home this season, seem to have no problems scoring but have lost their last 2 games to Brighton and Reading. This will be no easy game but if we start as we finished Saturday should be more than capable.

Just need to stop messing about in defence and clear our lines rather than looking to play it out from the back all the time. I'd be giving Adoma another start, drop a defender and put  Tshibola in.

Up front is the difficult one - I really think Gestede should play, he causes chaos in the opposition box and something always drops for us from corners and crosses with him in there but then who do take out? If it was me Kodja would be main striker and I'd start Ayew and Gestede up with him tomorrow. McCormack/Hepburn/Grealish to come off the bench if it's not going to plan.

Barnsley are shit defensively. They also break quickly from midfield and have some very confident attacking players. I would play four at the back and bring Cissokho back in for solidity.

Jedinak could be very important in breaking up play and we desperately need the legs of Tish to both counter quick breaks and to get us on the front foot.

Whisper it quietly but Westwood might be useful in the midfield 3 (do you hear me Bobby, 3 in midfield) in this one as well.

They will have a go and leave lots of space. If he can quickly move it ten yards to the wing we could have a field day on the break. That's why Gestede cannot start. Adomah and Ayew flitting between midfield and attack with Kodjia up top.

We should absolutely fuck them on the break if we set up like that.

bang on 1-1 draw, lousy refereeing decisions costs us the extra points with Villa down to 10 men for second half and they get a last minute equaliser just after we hit their post.

Yeah, would go with (assuming McCormack is not fit):

                           Gollini

Bacuna       Elphick       Chester    Cissokho

                         Jedinak

             Tshibola          Westwood

Adomah              Kodjia                Ayew

Bench - Bunn, Baker, Richards, Amavi, Gardner, Grealish, Gestede

Westwood starts simply because the only other real option is Gardner.

Saw Barnsley a fair bit last season as they ruthlessly demolished any chance Walsall had of joining everyone else in the championship over two legs in the play offs.

They've carried the momentum they've had for pretty much a year now (this time last year they were actually bottom of league one) and just try to outscore teams.

Their team last year had quite a few loanees who went back like Lloyld Isgrove and Ashley Fletcher. They also sold their best defender to Swansea, Alfie Mawson.

That said they still have some talented players we need to watch otherwise it will be yet more dropped points....Connor Hourihane is a very good attacking midfielder, won't be long before he's in the Ireland squad imo and upfront they've got Sam Winnall (from Willenhall) who scored 20 last season and has already scored a few this season. Keeping Tom Bradshaw on the bench.

Where I reckon this game will play into our hands is I reckon Barnsley will attack us from the off as that's what they know. So an early goal for us on the break and  I reckon it will be a good night for us for once.,

I can just imagine the chaos at the turnstiles trying to deal with that load of change.

Cash only as well.
2016 prices with 1970s cash till technology.

I thought Cissokho was a bit unlucky to get the drop, he's been pretty solid so far this season.

I thought he was injured, I didn't realise he'd been dropped. You're right about him this season though, he's been one of the better players so far.

It's because amavi is in theory more suited to the wing  back role

Yeah, would go with (assuming McCormack is not fit):

                           Gollini

Bacuna       Elphick       Chester    Cissokho

                         Jedinak

             Tshibola          Westwood

Adomah              Kodjia                Ayew

Bench - Bunn, Baker, Richards, Amavi, Gardner, Grealish, Gestede

Westwood starts simply because the only other real option is Gardner.

That would be my preferred line up unless of course Ross is fit.

Villa 2-1

the only snag being he cant actually defend

a left sided midfielder all day long for me

Kodjia as centre forward please. Not on the wing. Get balls into him and he'll score.

No idea what RDM, Clarke et al see to think he should be playing out wide.

0-2

PS4 predicts a 1-0 defeat, with Ashley Westwood getting a straight red in the first half for an absolute horror tackle.

That'll be 3 game ban....collateral damage :-)

Have to admit when he fouled one of the stripeys on Saturday I shouted for a straight red card

Not been to Barnsley before so looking forward to it. We need to start picking up a few wins to move us up the table and I think tonight we will. 1-3 to us.

No problem.

Can't guarantee it will be a Villa one, though.

This is going to sound like I've been drinking or sucking on a balloon but I think Westwood could be dropped tonight for Tshibola.

It's got to happen sometime and wins in the next two games will make the table look a lot better.

2-1 Villa

Anyone know if it's on WM /FM/DAB etc... (up here in Stafford) I can only get it on FM on one radio and the DAB is from Wolverhampton & the black country, so I always end up with the Wolves game when on DAB  :-[

3-1 win.

Gollini
Bacuna Elphick Chester Cissokho
Jedinak Tshibola
Ayew McCormack Grealish
Kodjia

That's if McCormack is fit and Grealish is forgiven.

Yes I agree, but why we've tried playing wing backs I have no idea? I'm sure when we spent tens of millions in the Summer wingbacks weren't at the forefront of any thinking.

Big test for the defence tonight as Barnsley are the leagues top scorers with 19 goals. They've conceded 13 so their defence isn't great. We desperately need a win and I think we'll get it.

2-0 Villa
Title: Re: Barnsley v Aston Villa Pre-Match Thread

Barnsley have beaten

Derby 22nd
Qpr 16th
Rotherham 23rd
Preston 19th
Wolves 8th

And lost to

Reading 4th
Brighton 3rd
Ipswich 14th
Huddersfield 2nd

So it should give us a decent idea of where we are seeing as they've so far lost in general to the better sides and beaten the clubs that will struggle. Lose tonight and I think RDM will be gone, 1 win in 10 would be appalling, especially as a lot of the results can be laid at his feet directly.

I think we have further to sink yet.

I hear Barnsley are playing a back three of Darren Gough, Michael Parkinson and Dicky Bird.

Barnsley 2 Aston Villa 1
