Title: Aston Villa vs Huddersfield Town Pre-Match Thread
Post by: cdbearsfan on August 13, 2016, 05:31:00 PM
Right, I start the pre-match thread, Tuscans starts the match thread. Deal? Well, it worked against Rotherham.

Villa 3 (Ayew 44, McCormack 55, Traore 87)
Huddersfield 1 (Wells 90)

They will be confident having won both games and especially after today. This isn't guaranteed at all. But I will go 2-1 to us, Ross and Ayew to score.

This game is even bigger than the Rotherham game. Win this and I think the confidence and feel good factor will come flooding back. Add a couple of new additions in time for the Derby game and we might be a force to be feared.  Villa Park needs to be loud and proud so any visiting clubs see the game as one to get out of the way. Go at them early. 2-1 home win for me. Mack and Tish with the goals.

Looking at the Newcastle highlights they have a lot of pace in the final third. Van Le Parra didn't do much at Wolves but seems to be a good player for them and we all know about Wells.

Joe Lolley and Hogg aswell...Villa fans.

Be a good test for our back 4 this one I think as they'll play on the counter.

Doing a bit of reading up on them and it's no surprise they're doing well. The manager David Wagner is something of a Klopp protegee, and they seem to have a coherent plan all around the club. Very switched-on and everything. This will be a proper challenge for our own project, for sure.

Not sure why this should be a much harder game than Rotherham - Huddersfield finished 19th last season just a couple of points above Rotherham. They've had a good start but we should be able to put a stop to that on Tuesday. 3-1 Villa

We shouldn't big them up too much - they nearly went down last year though I get the impression they're better this year

Just watched the extended Rotherham highlights on AVTV. Fair to say Rotherham were pretty awful. Good fun though. Maybe that's what it's like when you're a top 4 club and just swatting aside teams every week.

This will be tougher if for no other reason than Wells. Still think we've got the weapons to beat teams like this quite comfortably though. Need to ensure we build up our confidence over the next few games

JUST read the report from toon v udders, toon 65% possession. udders 3 shots on target of which one was a penalty and the scored from the save. So not exactly total attacking emphasis by udders

spose its obvs but they set themselves up to defend and attack on the break. so imagine that's something like what we can expect (well ditto for most our games in this division)

I think its imperative we outfight them in midfield, and with our goal machine up front 4 - 0

Rotherham did look ridiculously bad. These lot will be much more organised. I read that They played very deep v the Geordies and let them have a lot of the ball at the back, but jostled them in central midfield.

We'll need to avoid the classic villa thing of leaving ourselves ridiculously open (cf Middlesbrough game). But I reckon they might have tired themselves out. We've also got gestede if they do defend deep

2-0 villa. McCormack still waiting for his first. So I'm going ayew and gestede

According the guy who watched them beat Newcastle on Saturday, he said that they have a very well organised defence and are quick on the counter attack

Hopefully we will edge it 2-1, just hope that our lot don't just turn up and expect to win

This could be a tough game

Ayew looks like he's limping even at the start of the game and also does like to have a few lie downs. He's just a Reeves & Mortimor style knee-rub away from being Ashley Young

Yeah think Huddlesfield are a better side than Rothernham and will be on a bit of a high following their start.  But I think we should get the job done.  Will also go for a 2-1 to us with Ross getting off the mark and another goal from Ruddy.

Huddersfield definitely a step or two above Rotherham...I expect pretty much the same team and hopefully making more of the chances we create...which will be fewer than Saturday.
Would like to see Traore on for more than 10 minutes but he needs to get away from being so far wide on the touchline...him feeding off Gestede/midfield and running at tired CBs could work very well for us.

A closer than we'd like victory!
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Huddersfield Town Pre-Match Thread

3-0 us. Our centre-half pairing give their strikers barely a touch, Rudy adds another towards his 20 target, Ross Mac gets off the mark, as does Tish, who I reckon doesn't do tap-ins. More rave reviews for Grealish, and another new signing paraded.

Not too much to ask, is it.

The confidence from the win on Saturday plus the same attitude should give us a victory. We still need to cut out the complacency and sloppiness which we are still prone to.  Tombola will be key again.  I'm liking the look of him.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Huddersfield Town Pre-Match Thread
Post by: robbo1874 on August 15, 2016, 10:44:05 AM
Absolutely no idea how this will pan out. I'd have taken a draw with Wednesday before that one to stop the rot and we lost. Same before Rotherham and we beat them at a canter by all accounts. Given their early results, Huddersfield will be likely a tougher proposition than Rotherham. I can't say I know anything about them at all to be honest. Hopefully with a bit of confidence returning after Saturday, we can hopefully get a point and maybe even a win, if things go our way.

Still would like to see a few more out and one or two more players in before the window ends. If a poor result against Huddersfield forces the issue, then I won't be too disheartened really. Prefer a solid performance and 3 points though, obviously.
Title: Re: Aston Villa vs Huddersfield Town Pre-Match Thread
Post by: Jimbo on August 15, 2016, 10:53:03 AM
I saw signs of misplaced arrogance in the early stages of the Luton game, and we got what we deserved in the end. On Saturday we saw a different team and a different attitude. Rotherham at home was a game Villa should always win, whenever it's played in the next thousand years, but only with the attitude that we have to earn it. We have no automatic right to victory against anyone, but we do have the resources and stature that, if backed up with sheer hard graft and desire, should see us beat most teams at home this season.

Huddersfield will be a different proposition to Rotherham, but we should beat them at home if our attitude is right. That means taking nothing for granted, working our balls off, and concentrating until the last second. Do that, and we should win the game. I'm still not convinced that this attitude has taken hold throughout the club, so I'm going for a draw.

Posted this in Tickets and Travel but thought better post in here too....

Just checking the state of roadworks on the M6 for tomorrow night for the Huddersfield game and noticed Traffic England have decided to do overnight roadworks on Junction 7 from today to 31st August, with the M6 northbound access slip road closed from 21.00 - 6.00, meaning you can't get on the M6 northbound at Junction 6 (Park Circus closed) or Junction 7 after tomorrow night's game. I rang Traffic England and they confirmed that is what's planned. Brilliant.

Randomly choose fans to hold the brolly for them.

They'll come and sit deep and try and hit us on the break. Glad we've got Chester besides Elphick.

I think we'll need McCormack to play well and rely upon his guile and inventiveness to open them up.

We won the Final in 1920. Do you mean "we" as in they said "we"? And weren't they the first club to win the League three times on the bounce? A feat repeated only once since, I think.

There's something pushing from the back of my mind and I'm too tired to check it but, IIRC back in the dark days, the season we were relegated to the third division and the Doc was manager, we played Huddersfield in a mid-week match when Huddersfield were riding high.  We beat them 4-1 I think.  I think it was the time we had Emmet Kepengwe and Freddie Mwilla.  The Doc, as I recall only ever played the same line-up twice that season whilst he was in charge and that was that Huddersfield game and the next one against Cardiff where normal service was resumed with a defeat.

This will be a lot tougher than Rotherham, I expect some of the glaring weaknesses in the side (full backs, presence in midfield, workrate on the flanks and up front) to be fully tested by this lot.

In saying that we should be beating these at Villa Park, they had a tough game last weekend while we cruised to victory so we should be a bit fresher. Tight game, will go 2-1 to the good guys, Gestede again on the mark.

They were pretty shit last year, although wells still scored a lot

Their new manager was assistant to Klopp at Dortmund and has brought in a few Germans. Apparently they'll be playing an uber pressing game this season, though I think they sat deep against Newcastle to counter the pace of (forgotten his name - the striker they bought)

We need to be prepared to play against either approach. I'm guessing they might press more as we've got less pace. Unless RDM springs a surprise and plays Adama

Still think we should win. But the players need to be right at it and not think they can just give the same performance as Rotherham. They looked very easy to play against

From the OS

Quote
Tonight will be another memorable evening for Huddersfield’s Joe Lolley.

The Villa fanatic arrives in B6 as a focal part of the Yorkshire side’s attack.

He’s enjoyed an impressive rise up the football pyramid - jumping from Conference Premier to the Championship in January 2014.

Lolley netted 88 goals in 83 games for Midlands Combination Premier side Littleton before shining at the World University and College games.

Non-league Kidderminster Harriers snapped up his signature in the summer of 2013 before Huddersfield came calling six months later. And he’s not looked back since.

Despite his affection for the Villans, the right-sided attacker is clearly focussed on securing three points for David Wagner’s Town.

Lolley is a boyhood Villa fan after being introduced to the claret and blue tradition by his dad Martyn.

And he says father and son will be rooting for the opposition at Villa Park for one night only.

He said: “Tonight will be massive for me.

“It’ll also be huge for my family - a big moment for them and myself.

“It’ll be a bit surreal walking out onto to the pitch looking out into the stands instead of the other way round.

“It’s something I’ve been looking forward to since the fixtures came out. I can’t wait.

“My friends will be in the Villa end. My dad, who is a Villa supporter, will be supporting Huddersfield tonight.”

Lolley and the Terriers have started the season in fine form.

They saw off Brentford 2-1 at home on the opening day before recording an eye-catching victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Over 3,000 Town fans made the journey to the North East – this followed a record opening day crowd at the John Smith’s Stadium a week earlier.

And Lolley is hoping the atmosphere among the supporters and in the dressing room could prove the difference against Villa this evening.

He explained: “The mood in our camp is very positive.

“We knew we had a tough start to the league campaign against two good teams so to come out with six points is great.

“We approached both games differently tactically and we performed the way we wanted to.

“So to come out with two good performances and two good results is perfect.

“We had just over 3,000 at Newcastle. It was a good turnout. They were really loud there.

“We know we’ll be backed in numbers at Villa Park.

“The fans are getting behind us and that helps, especially somewhere like Newcastle where they had 50,000 odd there.

“To see 3,000 of your fans travel and making a lot of noise and louder than the home fans.

“It gives all the players a boost before and during the game.”

Villa head into the clash on the back of mixed results – a narrow loss at Sheffield Wednesday followed up by a comprehensive victory over Rotherham on Saturday.

As someone who has been in and around the second tier for over two years, Lolley is confident Roberto Di Matteo’s men can have a successful 2016/17.

He added: “I think overall they’ve signed some really good players, especially for the division and adding to the quality they’ve already got especially going forward.

“They’ve just added some players at the back who will bring a lot of experience and qualities.

“I think overall they’re looking like they’ve got a good team and squad.

“This season I think they’ll do well.”

Can't wait for tonight.Missed Rotherham, working.Unfortunately everytime I give up my ST we tend to win.I've literally seen us win about 6 times in about 3 years, all the other occasions I've been at the grimestone.

Love the first games in the sunshine,a packed Villa Park, the blind optimism and hope radiant.

First time in the Bartons for about 5 years tonight.I tend to do the Swan and Mitre prematch, after getting off the train. However, all my oppo's are holidaying,so I'm off with a workmate for a few Ubu's.Another change, back in the Holte with my ST for the first time since 1995.The perks of a 15 year old not knowing he's so so lucky to be attending, even if it is in the "uncool" Family Stand. He wore us down eventually, but I'm going to miss the Trinity.

I think it's going to be tight tonight.Frequently there's a team that really overachieves in this league.I think Huddersfield could be the one that comes from nowhere.2-2 ...after being behind.UTV

The image quality on Saturday from the phone was better than the usual streams. The only negative was the number of people leaving and returning to their seats during the game.

Cheers, for the game list, PWS.

I just literally bumped into their team. They are stopping at the Holiday Inn across the road from work and were strolling past The Railway as I crossed over.

Did you cripple a few of them, just to make sure?

Well if anyone were to find a link for a working stream, I would appreciate a PM (however I agree it's almost definitely not going to happen as no channel wants to show Villa- Huddersfield on a Tuesday night)

The club should show it on AVTV.

While it would be great for overseas fans etc, it would be daft for the club to show live games, especially home games.

I'm fairy sure that they can't any way, as Sky have the rights to all live games.

Chelsea TV always show their PL games an hour after they've finished.

As for the Championship, I doubt very much Sky have sold the rights to many/any the territories outside the UK. The Championship is of no interest to them other than stopping their competition potentially cleaning up on non-gloryhunting subscribers.

How many games do you think we'll get to see on telly this season then?

Based on current trend, every two to three weeks, about 20 ?

15-20 most likely. But it doesn't matter, why would a club show games, especially home games, live online even if they could?

I didn't think about that before posting, yes it does seem stupid.

Don't know if mentioned but the SSN soccer special is an excellent addition to your viewing option.
It starts at 7.30 and shows the goals as they go in, its the Saturday version with added.... a great programme if the right pundits are on.

Alan Macinally is on tonight so plenty about Villa I would think.

My midweek match nights this season when I'm not there will be laptop and h&v, radio commentary and SSN on mute till we score or our name pops up.Also add a few cans of cheap lager.

Skol is excellent - if served under right conditions. That is - in Brazil, on the beach with 30 degrees plus.
