4-2-3-1, no?

Westwood and Sanchez screening. Cleverly, Delph and Grealish given licence to get up alongside the beast.

Harsh on Smirker. No one has ever had the credentials to post an official team sheet on a match thread. Despite this, he could still make the difference in roaring us on to a 2-2 thrilla.

Or 4-2-2-1-1, with an inverted trapezoid midfield.

There's some flexibility there to change things as needed. A couple of screeners because of the threat Silva offers.

They're going to dominate possession. We've got to be organised, solid and look to hit them on the break.

I thought Gabby was meant to be back?

Strange enough selection, looks like a very narrow four in midfield for us.

City have picked a very attacking side, should be plenty of space for the likes of Grealish and Benteke to get on the ball.

Unbelievable. What a fucking appalling rick.
But at the same time, why keep giving the ball to a keeper who's absolute dog piss at kicking the ball? Asking for trouble when a predator like Aguero is around.

Guzan will be lucky to keep his place.

Richardson has been sloppy so far.

He did well to clear off the line last week, but Richardson to me looked easily our worst player.

He doesn't seem to do anything particularly well.

What happened?

Guzan scuffed a backpass straight to Aguero who had a tap in according to the wireless.

They were royally pissing about with it at the back for the first few minutes as well.

Two good deliveries from Grealish for the set pieces, has had a poor start so hopefully that settles him.

More starsky and hutch type defending. Poor pass from Bacuna but Okore completely stuck to the ground, didnt seem to even see Aguero

He has saved us countless times over the last few seasons too. Still, a low point for Guzan.

Cant live on past glory though.  He's a liability and has been for months

I can't remember him making any howlers like today's one though? Maybe missed the odd cross but overall he's been decent for me.

Well a horrid first 20 minutes, set off by an appalling error. It took us a while to recover from that. However we're back in the game now.

I would sacrifice Westy or Sanchez for Zogbia. Just to give us a little more pace and width. Benteke is still a threat (when he's onside) and Delph and Grealish have got themselves into the game.

Given has been excellent this season in the cups. He's not put a foot wrong. Guzan has been a little erratic of late, but the error today will certainly give Sherwood a big decision to make next game. Personally I'd put Given in. If you play well enough to earn a place, you should get it, regardless of position. It was no different than when Guzan covered for Given for a few games in TSM1 season, but lost his place as soon as Given was back from injury. Hardly fair really. Given is in form. Guzan not so much.

We're playing much better football under Sherwood. And I don't think it's just about him being a cheeky chappie.

Getting far more players into the box for one.

We keep the ball well at times, something that was started under Lambert but much more threat now. Having the likes of Bacuna and Richardson in the full back positions give us a lot more going forward. Crazy backpass aside Bacuna has been excellent for us in the first half.

On the Guzan discussion, imo he has had a poor season. Plenty of mistakes which were a real problem when we couldnt score.

Man City are in a strange position where they're clearly not going to win the league, but they're also clearly going to qualify for the Champions League.

I wouldn't say they have nothing to play for, but they're not far from it.

For me we started this match in a similar vein to Liverpool last week passing in our half and going back and square.

Probably not helped by starting with Sanchez and Westwood as they both like to pass square and back

There is little doubt Brad hasn't been as good this season as he's been the last couple. Long term he's still our number 1 over Given, but we're into the short term now regarding survival.

Just been listening to Rednap on Sky with his expert opinion. Bloody easy to criticise after the event. As we saw last week two keepers making mistakes, it happens and I'm sure Guzan is sick. Other than the mistake, Villa have been as good as City despite their millions. We can get something out of this game with a bit of luck.

Grealish having another good game.

In recent weeks he was crap against Stoke, and awful  against West Brom, and now his brain fart has handed Man City a goal, with an attempt to gift them a second.  We've got a hard enough job without a dodgy keeper making it harder.

I wouldn't change the midfield here. N'Zogbia offers precious little end result and at least with Sanchez and Westwood we have some measure of control in midfield. I wouldn't give that up when we've been playing pretty well.

Jack's a star in the making but I wish he'd pull the trigger sometimes. There were a few times last week when he'd done all the hard work and it was crying out for a curler. I bet he's got it in his locker too with his technique being so good.

I thought the sky coverage was ok, didn't really pin the blame on Guzan, but said that the whole team tactic of passing it round the back just invites pressure on and is more at fault

Crap against Stoke and West Brom? Not brilliant best but you are making out he has been a liability which is nonsense. Today was a bad one and his head went but he has been consistently very good for a long time. Given deserves a place on form but we will soon be moaning when we start losing goals from set plays and look very jittery in the last 5 under the high ball. That's when Guzan has been very useful.

One positive is its been down to a couple of howlers. Nobody expected us to get anything here today so we can move on to the next games with some confidence (assuming we avoid a walloping here, which i think we will).

That's the way I see it too. You can lose and still take something from a game like this. It doesn't have to dent our confidence. Under Lambo we'd have crumbled and been humiliated.

Yep.

I'd also suggest that our problems this season and last weren't about losing to the likes of Man City, it was stuff like having the double done over us by the likes of Crystal Fecking Palace.

Agreed.

One thing that is really, really notable is that this season under Lambert, you hardly ever saw our midfielders making runs into the box, pretty much never.

Recent weeks, we do loads of it.

You have to really wonder what Lamber said to them before or during games. And especially during training. Whatever it was it had to have been so lacking inspiration and motivation.
