Disagree with Gabby being in for Gil, but unless he plans to play Cleverley or Delph wide that looks like a change of system to me, with Gabby and Sinclair wide of Benteke. Solid and counterattacking. I like that, if so.

I hope Lowton has the game of his life, best crosser of the ball at the club. He was instrumental in assisting Bentekes tally that first season.

Cisse and Ameobi for Newcastle - 4-4-2? I hope so, because if we're playing the 4-3-3 we can really get on top of them in the middle of the pitch. They also might be more open and vulnerable to our counter, which looks quite quick today.

Not a bad side.
Gil to come on as an impact sub?
No defensive cover on the bench.
Maybe 3 at the back with Delph and Lowton as wing backs?

That's not a great looking side in my eyes.  Westwood and Cleverley are far too pedestrian, but Sanchez has been shocking for ages now, and Gil is all fart and no shit, so I understand dropping them both.  Lowton is rubbish, so god knows how he's going to do at left back which is presumably where he'll play.  I think we're in for a sound thrashing.

I think Lowton and Sinclair will play as wing backs with Hutton playing as the third centre half.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on February 28, 2015, 02:22:55 PM
Sherwood has gone down slightly in my estimation with keeping with Gabby. I guess, much like Benteke, he's hoping for a miraculous turnaround in form to what Gabby is capable of. If he could be remotely bothered, he could be a match winner today.
We'll see. He owes the fans a big performance.

Likewise Benteke does too. The pair of them haven't exactly set records for workrate and determination in recent months. In fact I dare say even Zogbia probably shakes his head disparagingly at some of their abject displays.

Gil is far from all fart and no shit. He is creative, works pretty hard, and should be starting. Gabby can fuck off.

Hutton might play left back
I would think so to. I think Hutton can better adapt to left back, and Lowton is a good crosser as mentioned before.

But I do not understand why Gil is not playing. He might have been bad last week, but I think he has the skills we have been missing for ages and has been good in the games I have seen. Maybe it is because of counter attacking and then Gil will start on Tuesday at home.

Hutton or Lowton surely to play left back in a 4-3-3 (4-3-2-1) formation.

We'll soon see if Sherwood is seeing something in training that's not being shown on match days with this line up. I'm hoping for a point at 1-1 unless Benteke comes to life.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: KRS on February 28, 2015, 02:27:09 PM
Is Cissokho injured or dropped? I don't rate him at all but still a strange decision bringing Lowton back from the dark so hopefully Sherwood has seen something in training.

Looks like 442 to me...unless he's pushing Gabby and Sinclair down the wings for 433.

For a team that almost beggars belief in its lack of creativity and goal scoring, calling the guy who scored that goal v Bournemouth and made that assist v Chelsea "all fart and no shit" seems pretty harsh to me

Can't see anything but a defeat here, I'd definitely take a draw. But we probably need to be trying to win games like this and this Newcastle team is definitely beatable

Is there some sort of bonus loyalty card that gets used when it comes to dropping players? The more crap performances over the years, the less likelihood there is of being dropped, something along those lines.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Toronto Villa on February 28, 2015, 02:46:46 PM
The only real change I would have had in there is someone for Gabby. The defense picks itself really given the injuries. Depending on how fit Gil is and he didn't look 100% last week I'd have had him playing on the right of a midfield 3. That or throw Grealish in. I just hope we don't see the strategy from last week on how to get the ball to Benteke because not only was it ineffective it makes the eyes bleed watching it.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Nelly on February 28, 2015, 02:49:09 PM
Grealish has looked fairly ineffective when I've seen him. I hope Gil has a part to play today. He seems to make stuff happen.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Monty on February 28, 2015, 02:50:32 PM
A really attacking team would have all three of Sinclair, Gil and Grealish as the 3 in a 4-2-3-1. I can understand why he's not gone for that today, however - the break might be very important.

If we played a more logical formation, with players in their proper positions, then maybe we'd overpower them. As it is, it's two against two and pinball.

If we do survive by the skin of our teeth, I can't see Westwood here too much longer. He's a championship player at best.

I've been saying that for the last three years.
And we can say that about all too many of our squad right now sadly.
Which gives a horrid air of inevitably about this season.

Yep. This is why today and the Sunderland game are so key. We've got to take something out of the games against the sides who are (almost) as shit as we are.

It's been a bit of a dumb match, so I suppose it's not a surprise that we're losing through a dumb goal from a dumb mistake. Undeservedly too.
What's more gutting is that they've been on top since and we look like our confidence has left early. Hopefully Sherwood can get them up for the second half. Newcastle look ropey at the box. There's more goals to come. Probably at both ends.

Lowton is an indisciplined clown. Always at that crap, under pressure now in the second half with that yellow.

Gil for Gabby is the obvious change

I'd go for that too, and tell Gil to play close to Benteke, try and play a few little one-twos. Gabby's ridiculously slow these days, he takes an age to decide what he's going to do with the ball even when there's a straightforward pass on.

But as shite as others are, we are our own worse enemies. We created a few good chances and got fuck all due to Poor crossing, awful finishing and some bad luck.
They have 1 effort and in if goes. The goal has visibly deflated us and sherwood has got to get them back up for it.

second half Agbonlahir has got to be off. I'd rather has wiemanns headless chicken energy than gabbys lazy arse apathetic bullshit.

It's a team with relegation written all over it. We were by far the better team that half, had got the NUFC fans getting on the backs of the players and then concede a very sloppy goal. In a similar way last week we conceded goals from poor decisions and defensive mistakes. You can't make the mistakes and miss the opportunities we have and stay up.

We need a HUGE 2nd half.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Morten on February 28, 2015, 03:58:52 PM
We started all right, but what a soft goal to concede. After that we looked disorganized in both defence and attack. It could easily have been 2-0 from the corner, no one was marking their striker.

One thing that has continued from Lambert is that we put everyone in the box, when the opponent have a corner. So when we clear it, they can launch it back into the box without pressure. Why not put Agbonlahor between our box and the middle line to chase the clearances ? That said, he has been ineffective as always. We need to bring on Gil in the second half. They will probably sit back more now, so we need more creativity to open their defence.

Newcastle are not very good and yet they score an easy goal. Hope really is fading if we cannot match this Newcastle side today...

Looking at the league table right now and the gap is getting bigger and bigger. If Sunderland pinch a win today with Burnley it's going to mission impossible.

Yeah. If we don't get anything from this game then it really is "oh bugger" time. I have thought we were down for a while though, honestly I think the players believe it as well.

I find it a bit strange that in his first game, Sherwood jettisoned both Cleverley and Westwood, and now he's decided he's better off playing both of them.

Maybe in the next game he'll see what we've all known for months and just play one of them.

Some of us need to sort our heads out. The only option we have is to fight, or we may as well forfeit all our remaining games, go home and trash our bedrooms like surly teenagers. Fight, for fuck's sake, and stick together. And then we can do all the pissing and moaning we like when our fate is sealed. But only then. We've got a war to win and if we're gonna go down, we'd better go down fighting.

Sherwood can help the shape and tactics, and they've not been brilliant today, but the players have been kind of amazingly shit. It's almost supernatural.

It doesnt matter fuck all what Hull, Sunderland , Burnley etc are doing today. We need 15 points. We CAN get 12 at home if we rally.
But we need 3 more...either here...today or we HAVE to get them at Sunderland. Its that simple and ... hard. Or next season highlights will be the derby with Birmingham :(

I must admit I foolishly thought new manager honeymoon period was bound to ensue. I have exactly the same resignation as we stumbled towards the end of McNeills reign(Albeit McNeill had far less to work with). It sounds like keystone cops :(

That 4 yr frickin contract ......if they hadn't have given him that I am sure they would have sacked him earlier.

That is down to an inept owner.

We have done fuck all since about 80 minutes.

The players are rubbish, the tactics are rubbish and have been all season, everything's rubbish. This is all over.

It should never have come to this, 25 games in to the season, 2 transfer windows wasted, pre season wasted. All to give old loyal Lambert some more time to somehow discover a brain. Lerner and Lambert pair of fucking half wits, destroying our club This crap coaching, crap game plans and general couldn't give a fuckness and apathy towards results has finally produced this what we've got right now, there's no way out of it this time, we are going down.

Sunderland, Hull and Burnley all lose.

It's between them, us and QPR for the other 2 relegation spots now.  (I'm assuming Leicester are down).

The reason we've been ok until this season is purely down to the fact that there were worse teams, there aren'y anymore. We're slightly better than Leicester and thats it...... Although not mathematically certain the final nail will come Tuesday night.
