3-1 Villa -Benteke back on track. Sinclair and Gil very instrumental
Us 78 Them 0.
Us 78 Them 0.
Whilst I admire your optimism, I'll be more than satisfied with our progress when Legion feels he can get back to his once-obligatory prediction of 2-0 us every week. Win this, and who knows, we might, might, be able to convince him to start the threads again. Heaven knows nobody else has lifted the curse. Perhaps the last 3.5 years hasn't been his fault.

aah retracting already I see
I'll be invading the pitch and throwing my ticket at Mr Sherwood if it's only 5-0!

From the Upper Trinity? Bring a parachute or some form of abseiling gear, then.
My guess on sherwoods first team selection
----------------Guzan -------------------
Hutton. Vlaar (c). Clark. Cissoko
Bacuna. Delph. Cleverly. Sinclair.
Benteke. Weimann.
Hope Gil is fit...and plays!
Stoke players definitely out: Shawcross, Muniesa, Cameron, Ireland, Bojan. With Huth out on loan also, do they have any recognised CB's available? I've no idea about who their fringe players are
Doubts over: Pieters, Wilson, Walters, Crouch.

I'll drop you over first to cushion my landing.
There was a video on Official AVFC youtube of Sherwoods first training session and Gil was training ..... Gabby out for the season. Cruciate ligament damage ......Whilst he ain't been good this could be a major blow. We have virtually no strikers at the club. If Benteke gets injured we are really fooked

Considering who Stoke have out this is an ideal time to play them. Reckon that midfield of midgets could be kicked around by them though.
Would like to see Sanchez and possibly Bacuna in our midfield. Big call at centre back but Okore has been at fault for a number of goals of late so should be the one to make way if Vlaar comes back in.

Or maybe he will crush Timahs head with his giant fucking mitt like he tried to do with Little Leandro last Sunday.

Benteke doesn't do salutes though does he? His trademark is the two index fingers in the air while he looks upwards to the sky. Therefore we'll see Sherwood jogging down the touchline with his two fingers in the air looking at the sky. I reckon that might look quite cool in a very strange way.

SSN are saying that Muniesa and Shawcross are injured and Geoff Cameron is suspended. Useful having 3 centre-backs out.
Maybe Sherwood is a lucky manager, if nothing else.

Any word on Gil? It's vital that he stays fit in my opinion.
If nobhead Lerner had done this beginning of January we would be safe now.I have full confidence in TS.His whole demeanour is a breath of fresh air.He knows the premiership inside out.Cant wait for Saturday actually looking forward to going to a game for a change.COME ON YOU LIONS

That's the team I'd go for. Vlaar is better than any of our defence at bringing the ball out of defence, Clark has been in form and also I forward to seeing another tackle where he rearranges the oppositions anatomy. Sanchez and Cleverley to do the midfield donkey work. Cleverley came out the 2nd half a different player he deserves a shot. Delph pushing right on and Gil and Sinclair to get wide and also play off of Benteke. Westwood gives away too many free kicks in dangerous positions and against these fuckers I'd rather not that.
Can't start with Guzan,Given is a far better keeper and after Sunday deserves another start.Lamberk fucked him off after one mistake. He is still a top class keeper
I haven't looked forward to a home game so much since we beat Chelsea at home 1-0 last season and then played...

from OS:
Agbonlahor and Gil both missed the FA Cup win over Leicester with tight hamstring and tight groin issues respectively.
But both players are available again as Mark Hughes's team come to B6.
Nathan Baker and Philippe Senderos are the only doubts.
Boss Tim Sherwood said: "Carles and Gabby are fit. "Gabby was on fire today. Everyone is flying and can't wait to get started. "They just all want to play and it's great to see. "Nathan is not fit. Philippe didn't train today either. Everyone else is raring to go."
There was positive news on long-term injury casualty Libor Kozak. Kozak has been out for over a year with a broken leg but now the striker is back in training with the U21 group. Sherwood suggested the forward could return to the fray before the end of the campaign. He added: "Libor is back in training. "It's non-contact and it's with the U21 squad. They are tailoring the sessions for him, which is good. "We are bedding him in nice and slowly. He has that get the confidence up because it was a nasty break and didn't heal as quickly as everyone wanted. "We are looking forward to seeing him, perhaps before the end of the season which would be good."
Can't start with Guzan,Given is a far better keeper and after Sunday deserves another start.Lamberk fucked him off after one mistake. He is still a top class keeperThat's one of the craziest things I've seen posted on here.
Hear what you say I have never had much confidence in Guzan. He had a poor game against Arsenal(As did the rest of the team) He would just not be my choice
I woould go with Sinclair up top with Benteke, Gil floating around behind and Cleverley, Westwood, Delph making a midfield 4. Vlaar Clark Hutton Cissokho picks itself. Anyone other than Stoke i would have kept Shay in, but Guzan should come back in for his command of the box.
Gil on one side Sinclair the other with Delph and a n other in the middle
My confidence that everything points to us winning this game is, perversely, making me very nervous about us not doing so...Also, Lawro has predicted us to win 2-0

We now have to start winning and this is the sort of match we must win between now and the end of the season. I reckon a barnstorming first half when we'll score early and get a second, followed be a nervy second when we revert to type. We might hold on for a 2-1 win

Really need to win this, and after initial reservations about Sherwood it's great to hear a Villa manager say the players are raring to go and he intends to play attacking, high tempo football, and if players don't give their all they don't play. It will be a very welcome sight compared to months of pedestrian possession with no purpose. I'm actually looking forward to going for a change.I particularly liked one comment he made, about telling our players not to be afraid of losing. We've got to set our stall out to try and win games. We rarely seemed to do that under Lambert, or McLeish for that matter. Play to win. It won't always pay off, but with the quality of player we have, I'd like to think we could establish a solid mid-table run of form.
My only concern is Sherwood seems to be openly telling Hughes in advance what our tactics will be. Not sure thats the smart move to be honest.
They seem to have a fair few injury/suspention issues.Good news indeed.
Shawcross, Bojan, Cameron, Muniesa and Odemwingie definitely out, Ireland, Crouch, Pieters, Wilson and Walters all doubtful.

The guardian's predicted line ups are pretty hopeless but the link above does reveal the injuries stoke have at centre back. If they line up like that i'd really hope we could cause them a few problems with some relatively direct play and good movement
We spent ages bemoaning MON style football but I think that could be the order of the day tomorrow

Tom Cleverley and Ashley Westwood axed as Tim Sherwood stamps his mark on Aston Villa
New manager wastes no time shaking things up at Villa Park as his race for Premier League survival begins
John Percy
10:30PM GMT 20 Feb 2015
Tim Sherwood has instantly displayed his ruthless streak by axing Ashley Westwood as he prepares to begin a new era at Aston Villa.
Westwood was one of previous manager Paul Lambert’s key players but the midfielder has been dropped for Saturday’s Premier League game against Stoke, with Sherwood insisting his team need more height.
Tom Cleverley is also understood to have been told he will be on the bench in a clear message that Sherwood will take no notice of reputations in his bid to save Villa from relegation.
Villa are in the bottom three but Sherwood is determined to build on his brief spell at Tottenham, in which he secured the best win ratio of any manager in the club’s Premier League era.
Despite the favourable statistics, Sherwood’s reign lasted less than six months before he was dismissed by chairman Daniel Levy and his appointment at Villa is still viewed in some quarters as a gamble.
But he insists his achievements at Spurs deserve more respect and still stand up to scrutiny, largely due to his work with young players including Harry Kane.
“I think [Mauricio] Pochettino has done a really good job there, but my record is still up there to be shot at,” he said
“He’s inherited a good bunch of young players who were developed by myself. It’s good for me - I left a bit of a legacy there with those young players.
“If I hadn’t resisted the club wanting to loan him out last January, he wouldn’t be Harry Kane now.
“But all I’m concerned with now is Villa and doing well here. I want to be a success - not only for this football club but for myself, but perhaps because there's a few other chairmen that might give young managers an opportunity.
“The football club has found itself in a difficult situation at the moment. But the lads are up for the fight to get the club out of it.”
Try telling the players and staff at Bodymoor Heath this week that Sherwood’s appointment has been a gamble. His presence has had a galvanising effect on the squad, removing the stench of failure that had permeated Bodymoor Heath, and it is impossible not to be impressed by his positivity.
Earlier this week Westwood ironically claimed training sessions have been “electric” while another admitted he felt “ten feet tall” after a one-on-one chat with the new manager.
The return of Kevin MacDonald as Sherwood’s No 2 also appears a masterstroke while Tom Fox, the chief executive, told a Villa supporters’ meeting on Thursday that Sherwood ticked all the boxes for the short and long-term aims of the club.
Ron Vlaar, Villa’s captain, said: “Since the new manager has come in the energy level of the squad is higher, for obvious reasons; everybody has a new chance.
“Everybody feels like they can get into the team if they do well in training and that has been really good. Every manager wants things done in a different way so we have been learning this week how the manager wants things done.
“Sometimes new things are good for the mind, it brings some freshness and it can help the mentality of the players.
“When a new manager comes in and makes changes you need to learn what he wants you to do so communication is a big part of that. He talks a lot and tells us what we should be doing.”
Sherwood has certainly had a constructive week. On Monday, hours after his first press conference, he drove to Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium to watch Villa’s under-21s lose against Derby County.
The following day he met chairman Randy Lerner for the first time and then held a number of one-on-ones with his players.
But he has been counting down the hours until 3pm on Saturday, when he starts his revolution against Stoke.
He spent much of his final weeks at Spurs sat in the stands, so will he be in the technical area?
“I’ll look at the weather and see what’s what but no, I’ll be in the dugout. I’ll slip in there after a 100 yard walk down the touchline. I can’t exactly duck in, can I?
“That walk from the dug-out to the tunnel must feel longer when you lose. I am worried about losing but I’m the only one who can be – not those players.
"We know we're running out of time and we need to get the best out of this group as soon as possible and that's what we intend to do.”

The kids can enjoy the VP experience a bit more, you can have a beer for about £4 and the kids can have snacks/drinks etc. Expensive I know, but at least you are already there and you and the kids can take in the Villa experience - the approach by Aston Park itself is pretty unique. Part of being a Villa fan. Depending on which stand you're in the pre-match experience differs. I love the views over the pitch from being in The Holte concourse area. From the Trinity you see nothing until you are in the "auditorium" itself.
Have a great day pav!

Tim Sherwood to wield the axe on Ashley Westwood as the new Aston Villa boss begins to stamp his authority on the club
Tim Sherwood plans to drop Ashley Westwood for the clash against Stoke
The new Aston Villa boss takes charge for his first game on Saturday
Tom Cleverley's place is also in doubt but Carlos Sanchez could return
By SAMI MOKBEL FOR THE DAILY MAIL
Tim Sherwood was last night planning to make a significant move away from the Paul Lambert era by axing Ashley Westwood for Saturday's clash against Stoke.
The new Aston Villa manager takes charge of his first game at the club after sitting in the stands for the FA Cup win over Leicester last Sunday.
And, as of Friday night, one of his first big decisions was to drop Westwood, who was a key player for Lambert, from the starting XI.
Sportsmail understands Carlos Sanchez is in line to replace the 24-year-old in midfield.
Westwood was an integral part of Lambert's plans, the Scot even tipping the 24-year-old for an England call-up.
Tom Cleverley is also sweating on his place in Sherwood's team for the visit of Mark Hughes's side.
The midfielder was dropped for Villa's last league game against Hull and Sherwood looks likely to keep Cleverley on the bench this afternoon.
John Percy certainly does seem to have his ear.
In the second half he was better (as were most of the team), but I don't know if we should get excited by one half decent display. I would expect Sherwood if he has anything about him to say to the likes of Westwood, Cleverly etc, that now is your time to shine. If you don't do it now then others will be taking your place.
Hope that report is true about Sanchez coming in for Westwood. Actually don't mind Westwood, but he is going through a bad patch right now and Sanchez has been one of the better players this season.
Exactly. Bullshit reporting.
Aren't you saying different things?
Woodhall seems to be suggesting there's a connection between Sherwood and John Percy. You're suggesting the opposite.
I am confused now :-) . Actually thought Cleverley played well last weekend but 4-4-2 and a Sanchez (not Arsenal displays) and Delph would be good for me
I thought Cleverley was OK last week, too.
However, that's pretty much the only time I've ever thought that.

Agree. I will stand by my prediction of a scruffy, nervy 1-0 win, Sinclair .Biggest challenge today may be managing fan expectations . This is going to be very tough I reckon.
I don't think it'll be a stroll but at least there's optimism. Under Lambert, we'd have this down for a defeat.

Roger East according to this. (http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/matches/2014-2015/epl.html/aston-villa-vs-stoke) 9 games this season so far, 36 yellow cards, no red. Yet. And strangely enough one of the linesmen's name is West.

Woke up with mixture of nerves and excitement, going with my two sons and grandson, my youngest getting train from Liverpool to watch match and get on train back to start 10 pm shift, amazing how different it feels now Lambert has gone, just win Villa just win.

Sun is shining and Villa are gonna win. Can't wait to get to VP.
How does a manager come up with his side for the first match? Surely working with players for one week doesn't really show how good/bad everyone is and their good/bad points. Must be a tough thing to do. Does he ask the other coaches? Does he have a look through the team put out in previous weeks?
I think he'll go with the team that started last weeks match. He saw the improvement in the second half, so will want to see if the players can recreate that.
Can players really show you how good they are in one week of training to get themselves a starting place? I'd say it'd go more on the match he saw last week and bits and pieces he's seen of Villa over the years.
Over 81% of us predict a Villa win. That must be unprecedented for a league game. The new-manager bounce or dead cat bounce.
3-1 win (we've got to score more than 2 goals in one game at some point)
Benteke first goal scorer
Guzan
Hutton-vlaar-Clark-Aly
Sanchez-Delph
Bacuna-Gill-Gabby

That's how I'd go, with the possible exception of Sinclair in for Gabby. But I'd have one replace the other as and when needed anyhow.3-1 win (we've got to score more than 2 goals in one game at some point)

I think you've nailed the team, Vinny. I hope you're right on the result too.
After a week of nervousness I'm feeling very confident about today. As Mr E rightly points out, we have very decent team that should be no where near the relegation spots.
Win the midfield in the early stages and I think we can batter them.
What are the odds on a Delph red card?Who's ref ?
Roger East according to this. (http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matchday/matches/2014-2015/epl.html/aston-villa-vs-stoke) 9 games this season so far, 36 yellow cards, no red. Yet. And strangely enough one of the linesmen's name is West.
The game's going south
The North Stand should be full.
It should be within our compass to win today.
A win would point us in the right direction.
Just fucking winAt the very least just look like we're attempting to win the match. We were in danger of being renamed Damage Limitation FC under Lambert.
