FA Cup 3rd Round. Sunday 4th January 3pm KO. Villa Park.
About time we twatted someone. I decided to buy a ticket for this one instead of Palace as I could only afford one of them. Hopefully I made the right choice!
Us 4 Them 0
-
Aston Villa nil.
-
Could we fuck up again? Surely not? No...
I actually think it could benefit the team to make a few changes. Give Jack a start, take TC, Andi and Gabby out and then fit in other players where we can. Maybe a change of system. We won't score many but hopefully a fairly routine 2-0 win.
The beaten down pessimist in me says that Blackpool will snatch it 1-0 with Fonzy scoring though.
-
Genuinely can't see us scoring.
0-1 defeat in front of 18k
-
We are clearly not functioning in the final third of the pitch. This is the ideal match to try something different without risking losing the game. In the past we have played weaker teams but played in the same way and lost against lower league opposition.
I would go 4-4-2 with Robinson alongside Benteke, Grealish and Bacuna wide and Sanchez and one other in the middle. I would be tempted to give Gardner a go and give him some responsibility.
-
Blackpool will come with absolutely nothing to lose.
If they take the game to us I think we could see another cup embarrassment.
-
Is Bent back from his loan spell?
-
Rest the first team (whatever that is) and play the kids. Even our backup players can and will beat Blackpool easily.
-
Is Bent back from his loan spell?
Yes.
-
0-0.
-
We'll grab a replay after a valiant 0-0.
-
0-1 Blackpool
-
Given
Lowton
Okore
Clark
Hutton
Grealish
Richardson
Sanchez
Bacuna
Robinson
Agbonlahor
Guzan
Cissokho
Cole
Herd
Weimann
Johnson
N'Zogbia
-
I wouldn't play Sanchez. He is one of the very few who needs, and deserves, a rest. I'd also play Benteke in the hope he gets back in the goals. Start Jack and Bacuna.
-
0-0. Scaredy cat Lambert too afraid of losing to try and win (again)
-
We'll lose. A weakened side will huff and puff and we'll give away a daft goal.
-
A draw. We'll take em to penalties at Bloomfield Rd in the replay.
-
We'll grab a replay after a valiant 0-0.
This, probably. I'm bringing two of my nephews to this. Here's hoping they want to go again afterwards.
-
Play Chris Herd for the craic.
-
Blackpool are appallingly bad. We will tear them a new one.
-
Play Chris Herd for the craic.
Up front . With Hutton
-
Blackpool are appallingly bad. We will tear them a new one.
Correct. Also they will want to get these cup fixtures out of the way to focus on survival. There is no league game I go into thinking we will absolutely win but I am completely confident we will stroll this game.
-
Finally, a game that won't be found in any dark corner of the internet. We'll probably go and win, won't we?
-
Isn't Robinson cup tied?
-
Isn't Robinson cup tied?
Yep. Got a hat-trick against Havant & Waterlooville.
-
There's gonna be about twelve people there
Definitely need to be playing grealish and Cole. Robinson cup tied so I'm not sure how many other kids are worth a look
Hard to give a flying fuck about this one really
-
I'd play Grealish , Burke, Johnson , Gardner , Donacien , lowton , Stevens , and Given .
-
8v11
-
I'd rather we try to win.
-
1-0 Benteke
-
I'd play Grealish , Burke, Johnson , Gardner , Donacien , lowton , Stevens , and Given .
We may as well just forfeit the game rather than play that lot.
-
8v11
With 3 others . Then again can Blackpool muster 11?
-
I'd play Grealish , Burke, Johnson , Gardner , Donacien , lowton , Stevens , and Given .
We may as well just forfeit the game rather than play that lot.
Agreed, Grealish yes the rest no.
-
Hard to give a flying fuck about this one really
It's the FA Cup mate!
-
If Grealish doesn't start this game, I'm going on a killing spree.
-
If Grealish doesn't start this game, I'm going on a killing spree.
Not again cd!
You know what happened last time!
So much laundry!
-
On the brightside, there won't be much of a crowd so not too many victims.
-
Given
Defence - usual except Lowton in for Hutton (with injuries do we have much choice?)
Midfield - rest Sanchez, play Richardson and Cole and someone else - Gardner?
Up front - Benteke needs to play (and score), Robinson, Grealish?
Some other players need to be on the bench, but such is my pessimistic streak, we could lose this and provide more super headlines for the neutrals!
Again!
-
Can see us losing this one.

Robinson is cup-tied.
-
We can win this.
-
We can win this.
We can dream. We must dream. The dream is on.
-
I wish I hadn't purchased a ticket for this as I want to be entertained.......
Anyway I reckon it will be 0-0 in another turgid display.
-
On the brightside, there won't be much of a crowd so not too many victims.
And the traffic will be lighter , so will get home quicker .....
-
Lot's of seats left for this , 15k I reckon will turn up if that.
I'm going to this , note my last visit was against Shef United in the cup ..
-
0-0
-
Thank god our three year run of hard fixtures has come to an end
-
Blackpool are poor. 3-0 Villa. Which would give us a boost but won't necessarily help our form and league position going forwards.
-
Will see us huffing a puffing for 85 minutes getting more and more desperate before Blackpool pop up with a late winner.
Groundhog day again and Lambert maintains his impressive and consistent record of going out to lower division opposition.
-
I couldn't care less if we lose, it just doesn't matter. Nothing will change if we do anyhow.
Unless Stan Matthews appears out of the shower (like Bobby Ewing) and plays we might win. But more than likely it will be a draw bore of little quality.
-
Unless we get lucky with an early goal, I fear we'll get more and more desperate and give away a dead ball situation in a good position or a penalty and out we'll go again.
-
In Jamie O'hara , Chris Eagles and Nathan Delfounosoe they have the weaponry to knock us out .
Let's hope for a cup upset - 2-1 villa win
-
I don't even want to think about this. It's upsetting me already.
-
We shouldn't worry Paul keeps saying the chances will eventually go in ::)
Maybe Blackpool will be the day before we go back to Premiership cannon fodder.
-

We may be many things but we aren't cannon fodder for anyone.
-

I do care about this one. More than the next League game. I don't care if we lose to Leicester as long as we win this cup tie. So we better take it seriously and play our best 11 fit players.
-
We need a good win. We'll probably end up winning 2-0. IN a very dull game.
-

More like cannon mufflers.
-
0.1 Blackpool Fonz getting the winner :'(
Bloody FA Cup does nothing but breaks my heart
-
We'll win and then get Chavski away in the next round. I've given up hoping we win the FA Cup. Just not going to happen in my time :'(
-
We have a manager who is capable of getting us knocked out by just about anyone.
-
Lowest scorers of both divisions I think. Should be exciting then. Whatever team Lambore puts out will play shit anyway because they're coached by clowns. A 1-0 either way.
-
We have a manager who is capable of getting us knocked out by just about anyone.
99% agree. It's the "just about" part that needs to be left out!
-

Yes, the 'just about' left me puzzled too.
-
They're only 7-1 to win on Sunday. Worth a fiver of anyones money.
-
0-0 is 14/1
0-1 is 20/1
0-1 Fonz 85/1
-
We will beat these quite easily.
-
Blackpool have won 2 games all season. Both 1-0 at home, to Cardiff and small heath. No matter how poor we are at times, I just cannot see us failing to beat them. Famous last words I know but I just don't see it.
-
It's a given that we won't score so a scoreline beginning Villa 0 is very probable. I think Blackpool will replicate the exploits of many others from the lower leagues.
Still, we have to concentrate on staying up.
-
Maybe we can bore our way to wembley. Comatoesing everything in our way.
-

Leeds game aside, it worked in 2000.

We kept it up at Wembley too, didn't really try to score, ain't that familiar?
-
I'm actually finding myself favouring a defeat rather a draw and a trip to Blackpool on a midweek January night. I'm sure that will change if we are one nil down with 5 mins to go mind you...
-
We have a manager who is capable of getting us knocked out by just about anyone.
When we can lose a semi-final to Bradford over two legs, we can lose to anyone.
-
1-0.
-
Blackpool have won 2 games all season.
I wish you hadn't mentioned that.
-
We should win, but in recent years we've made a habit of losing exactly these games. Normally we create loads but don't take our chances, so bloody stick it in Villa. No messing about please.
-
Blackpool have won 2 games all season.
I wish you hadn't mentioned that.
I bet that he's had that nugget eating away at his brain since the draw was made.

Nope, looked it up to see just how shit they were before posting. I didn't realise they were quite that bad.
-

I wish you hadn't mentioned that.
We've won 2 in our last 16.
-
I do think even we'll struggle to fuck this up
Given - Lowton Okore clark cissokho - bacuna richardson - nzogbia Cole grealish - gabby
-
Blackpool have won 2 games all season.
I wish you hadn't mentioned that.
We've won 2 in our last 16.
Which is still better than Blackpool and we aren't playing the likes of Huddersfield, Rotherham, Brentford etc every week.
-

I wish you hadn't mentioned that.
We've won 2 in our last 16.
Blimey, you could find negatives waking up to a white Christmas, the tree downstairs piled high with presents, a fit naked bird ready to play with your trumpet.

If you think we're badly run, check out what Karl Oyston has done to Blackpool.

Has he took the illuminations down?
-
Haven't the Oystons just trousered most of the PL money for themselves?
Shady family who run clubs and bars aren't they ?

He's obviously a tosser, but I don't agree with the printing of his phone number.
-
Quite simply, this represents the club's only remaining chance of providing the fans with some excitement (of the enjoyable kind) for the remainder of the season. If we don't get through Lambert should be sacked. He won't be, but I'd still expect him to realise that would be the general supporter-consensus and therefore pick a strong team. I'd guess at;

That club is a shambles top to bottom. We've got to be winning this. Lambert can't get away with dropping another bollock in the cup again. I don't think there's a club in the league in quite the mess that Blackpool are.

Completely agree about publishing his phone number being completely out of order.
Just thought it was an interesting insight into the workings of an owner who really has no interest in the club or the fans and runs the thing as a personal indulgence.
We can (with could reason on a number of points) criticise the way the club is run as a sporting institution at the moment, but I'd rather we endured another 5 or 10 years of this tedium, than Randy sell out to the first chancer that offers more than a roll of used fivers just to get rid.
Anyway, didn't mean to hijack another thread on the merits of change at the top.
The flippant (and my original answer) was 0-0.
Having thought about it I'll go for an eye wateringly poor performance in a 2-0 win. We'll huff and puff our way to a scrappy goal at the end of each half.
Lambert to use the word excellent 15 times in the post match interview, particularly in reference to our 82% possession, ignoring the fact we only managed 2 shots on target.

You can't play Westwood Sanchez and cleverly in the same midfield and expect to move forwards.

a) This is Lambert we're talking about
b) what are the alternatives?
I suppose he could play either Bacuna or Richardson in there, or look to play Cole instead of Cleverley?

Just read up on the Oystons. Jesus, and we complain about Lerner!

Westwood is still likely to be out anyway.
-
12,000 tickets sold so far.
Not sure if that includes Blackpool fans.
-
Everytime a lower league team dumps us out of a cup - I always think - next time I am heading down the bookies to lump on our opponents, as sure as shit we will lose.
Villa 0 - Blackpool 1
-
Anything could happen so i'll knock the cup predictions on the head till we reach the final.
-
3-0 win at least. Blackpool are a joke.
Agree that Benteke should play, he doesn't deserve a break. Robinson up top with him. If Baker is fit give Clark a break, otherwise
----------------Given,
Lowton, Okore, Clark, Richardson
Bacuna, Herd, Gardner
-------------Grealish-------
----Robinson, Benteke-----

Robinson is cup-tied.

I think we'll score a goal.

Paul Lambert has warned his players that Blackpool will come to Villa Park with real freedom.
Lambert says the Tangerines will be unburdened by the shackles of Championship survival struggles as they arrive in B6 for the third round encounter.
And the Villa boss says his team must be wary of that as they look for progress in the world's most famous domestic knockout competition.
Lambert has several injury and suspension problems affecting the likes of Ron Vlaar, Nathan Baker, Fabian Delph, Philippe Senderos and Libor Kozak.
But he promises he will go as strong as possible for the tricky tie with former Blues boss Lee Clark's men, who currently lie at the foot of the Championship table.
He said: "I think it's a good opportunity to get through. That's what we will try to do - we will go as strong as we possibly can to get through.
"It gives everyone a break from the league, which is really, really tough.
"It's been a hard period - the Christmas and New Year period is hard - but the Cup game gives us an opportunity to get through.
"I will go as strong as I can to get through. There was losing Ron and Fabian will still be out so there's still ones who will probably have to play again come Sunday."
Asked if he was wary of the Seasiders, he continued: "Yes. You have to be.
"There's nothing to lose for them. They will come out and give it a go.
"I am pretty sure they won't sit in.
"It's a Cup game so it will probably be a breather for them from the league.
"They are having a hard time in the league and Lee has gone in at a difficult time.
"It's a tough match. You'd like to think they will come and give it a game.
"I don't know Lee that well. I have spoken to him a few times but I know Alan Thompson really well. He's a good friend from Celtic.
"But for us, we just have to make sure we get through."
-
Reading a Lambert interview is a bit like watching an American tv show, where they're continually showing you previews of what's coming up later in the show. In the same way that they manage to turn 10 minutes footage into 30, Lambert has this incredible knack of turning 2 sentences into about 3 paragraphs.
-
Might wander over for this one if my man-flu is a bit better tomorrow.
-
I think we'll score a goal.
You mad, crazy fool you!

Herd is on international duty, Robinson cup tied. Perhaps give Cole a start?

We were excellent.
-
0.0
We were excellent.
I don't really believe in stats, but someone's just told me we had 105% possession out there today, so I've decided to believe in stats. I thought we were excellent, really excellent out there, I have no complaints
-
Has anybody done the 'I fancy a cup upset' one yet?
I think we'll score a goal.
I wonder what the odds are on us winning the FA cup without scoring a goal from open play? I fancy a bet that would mean if we won the cup by relying on penalties all the way by May Villa would be FA cup winners and I would be a millionaire.
-
We'll score from a corner.
-
150/1 with Paddy Power for Blackpool 1-0, Delfouneso to score
-
watching Tranmere vs Swansea. Donacien has done ok. Surprised to hear that Swansea hadn't scored more than a goal in the past 6 games and for most of the first half looked every bit like us. Pretty much all of the ball and nothing else in the final third. They've also actual given away the most points this season from leading situations this season. Then once the first went in it looked pretty easy for them. Hoping that it is like that for us tomorrow and that Blackpool provide us with the right platform to get a few of our boys rolling again.
-
I think we'll have a strong team out. Lambert wouldn't dare risk losing this one.
-
I think i'd go...
Guzan
Hutton Clark Okore Cissokho
Cleverley Sanchez
N'Zogbia Cole Grealish
Benteke
-
I'd play Lowton. I'd also be tempted to give Sanchez a rest.
-
REST.... Are you serious? This is an FA Cup tie. Not rest time!
-
Not all first choices perhaps...
Lambert's bound to rest a few - Okore, Sanchez...and give a start to Grealish, Bacuna...even N'Zogbia. Benteke to start too imo...he needs match practice and to find the net.
-
I think we'll have a strong team out. Lambert wouldn't dare risk losing this one.
He better not. I am in Lower Witton End and will chase him into the changing room if he did.
-
REST.... Are you serious? This is an FA Cup tie. Not rest time!
Yes. We know he often looks fucked towards the end of games. If we don't have another player good enough to face a truly shit Blackpool we may as well pack up and go home.
-
I'd play Lowton. I'd also be tempted to give Sanchez a rest.
I would have well but thinking about it, there's no other fit center midfielders to put in his place.
-
Yes Sanchez is a very dangerous player, for us, in the last 15 minutes!
-
I'd play Lowton. I'd also be tempted to give Sanchez a rest.
I would have well but thinking about it, there's no other fit center midfielders to put in his place.
Richardson, Herd or Gardner I suppose. If none are good enough to play against a side that is then we are fucked.
-
I think i'd go...
Guzan
Hutton Clark Okore Cissokho
Cleverley Sanchez
N'Zogbia Cole Grealish
Benteke
Good call Clampy, re: Cole.
Forget he was still with us!
Think Okore will be rested and back 4 reshuffled...Lowton coming in.
-
Depending on how his back is doing he may rest Clark.
-
Has he come out with any quotes about how "we could do without the Cup" this year?
Are we on for a sub 20k crowd too?
-
Has he come out with any quotes about how "we could do without the Cup" this year?
Are we on for a sub 20k crowd too?
Probably are on for sub 20K due to three home games in a week at this time of year. Not easy on the pocket and Blackpool aren't exactly much of a draw.
And this is what he said.

Slightly better than last year's "rallying cry". We shall see tomorrow.
-
Has he come out with any quotes about how "we could do without the Cup" this year?
Are we on for a sub 20k crowd too?
Not exactly.
Yes.
-

No but I hope this quote doesn't make players think it's going to be easy?
"It gives everyone a break from the league, which is really, really tough.
-
"I will go as strong as I can to get through...we just have to make sure we get through."
Which makes it pretty clear what his intentions are...to do just enough to scrape a win and no more?
-
Bit worried about Jamie O'Hara. When he was on loan to Portsmouth from Spurs he had a very good spell of form. I know that was some time ago and the bloke himself is a grade A tosspot but he has skill and a powerful shot on him. Probably not very fit though but we do need to watch him.
-
Looking on the club site i see there are no tickets available for the upper trinity so i take it that bit is not being used tomorrow.
-
No Upper Trinity is sold out. 10,000 B&B owners from Blackpool have bought the lot.
-

Business as usual then .

3-0 home win.
-
Maybe we can bore our way to wembley. Comatoesing everything in our way.
Leeds game aside, it worked in 2000.
Quarter final was a good game.
-
All goes well with my flight I might just make it tomorrow.
Where we meeting for a pint?

Legends on South Wabash if you've any sense.

Bartons it is then.

I think we'll lose and I don't really care. I'd love for us to win a cup so much, but I've accepted we're never going to do that under Lambert. Let's just focus on the league and keeping our place in the Premier League until a super rich person buys us.
-
I don't think either Clark or Okore can be rested, purely because we don't have any other fit centre-backs.
-
How can you forget the Herdmeister?
-
Because he's in Australia for the Asian Cup, and unavailable for this game.
-
Spoilsport :(
-
I never feel confident of us beating ANYONE under this clueless manager.Another example of his lack of vision and poor leadership in my book is he allowed Robinson to become cup tied, there again he has not given the lad a single minute since he returned from Preston so probably makes no difference Law of averages says we must score,so 1-1

VILLA v BLACKPOOL: Get down to Villa Park early today to buy/collect tickets.
Miss the queues by arriving promptly in B6 pre-match.

I can't see us losing to another lower league side. I don't think it'll be a comfortable win either though. I'll go 2-1.
-
In that case I am about to set off now!
Well as soon as I have watched all the giant killing ties from the past now on BBC2.
-
got a spare ticket up for grabs if anyone interested.....free to good home. pm me before 1130 if you want it and will meet outside the Holte End.

How much are you prepared to pay for someone to take it off you?

Bit optimistic, can see the gate being below 20k, maybe only 15k.
Given Blackpool were in the prem 4 years ago I doubt they'll bring thousands to this.

For anyone who hasn't bought one yet, me and Dave will be selling the fanzine down by the church. And once they are gone, they are gone!

What on earth has happened to Senderos?

What on earth has happened to Senderos?
Very good question SH. You can be fairly confident that if any of our first team squad gets something like a bruised toe they will be out for half a season at best....and probably more! Which makes me wonder about our medical people. Do they really know what they are doing?

You'd probably find longer queues in Chernobyl.

I've seen one Villa shirt on this train from Euston. Normally there are a fair number, even these days. I think it'll be a very small crowd and the home fans will be tense and nervous, all of which will make for a pretty poor atmosphere. I think it's up to the team to lift the fans and not the other way round.
-
Right. Back to work tomorrow. Cheer me up, Villa. Smash these.
6-0.
-
A few changes to the team today and a victory will be the case. A cup run which , with a bit of luck, can bring some continued momentum to Villas season
-
Just parked up very easily very close to the ground. I'm guessing 14k
-
With our new style I am predicting 90% possession and 1-0 through a penalty when Blackpool goalkeeper misses a corner leaving a defender to punch it away.

You shouldn't really park under the stand in Trinity Road?

We are going to struggle to find a stream for this aren't we?

It's not being shown anywhere, even abroad, so no streams today. There's always Jack Woodward's commentary on the OS ;)
-
A little concerned about lack of shocks so far...there is bound to be one today?
-
Shame isn't it? A few seasons ago we used to get big crowds for cup matches. Sensibly priced and the fans turned up regardless. The last few years has really strangled the faith out of the fans.

You could argue the F.A have played their part as well. Like someone mentioned on another thread, why on earth is there another game three days after the first ones?
-

Well if we score the media will report it as a shock

Yeah the FA Cup just isn't what it once was. It gets treated like muck now and the whole tournament has been slowly in decline since Fergie decided to take his Utd side out of it that year (98-99?) and also since the Old Wembley shut up shop.
That said I'd still bloody love to win it. But if I was asked to name the last 5 winners I'd seriously struggle.

Apparently there are Third round games on January 13 and 14 as well.

And Grealish and Cole and Westwood and Given

Looks like 4 5 1

Thanks lads. Was going to go but the OS stopped allowing sales about 90 mins before KO which is a bit daft cos I only live down the road and would have printed a ticket at home.
Couldn't be arsed going ticket office.
