Title: Aston Villa vs Blackpool Pre-match thread
Post by: PeterWithesShin on January 01, 2015, 06:03:16 PM
FA Cup 3rd Round. Sunday 4th January 3pm KO. Villa Park.

About time we twatted someone. I decided to buy a ticket for this one instead of Palace as I could only afford one of them. Hopefully I made the right choice!

Us 4 Them 0

Could we fuck up again? Surely not? No...

I actually think it could benefit the team to make a few changes. Give Jack a start, take TC, Andi and Gabby out and then fit in other players where we can. Maybe a change of system. We won't score many but hopefully a fairly routine 2-0 win.

The beaten down pessimist in me says that Blackpool will snatch it 1-0 with Fonzy scoring though.

0-1 defeat in front of 18k

We are clearly not functioning in the final third of the pitch.  This is the ideal match to try something different without risking losing the game.  In the past we have played weaker teams but played in the same way and lost against lower league opposition.

I would go 4-4-2 with Robinson alongside Benteke, Grealish and Bacuna wide and Sanchez and one other in the middle.  I would be tempted to give Gardner a go and give him some responsibility.

Blackpool will come with absolutely nothing to lose.
If they take the game to us I think we could see another cup embarrassment.

I wouldn't play Sanchez. He is one of the very few who needs, and deserves, a rest. I'd also play Benteke in the hope he gets back in the goals. Start Jack and Bacuna.

Correct. Also they will want to get these cup fixtures out of the way to focus on survival. There is no league game I go into thinking we will absolutely win but I am completely confident we will stroll this game.

Given
Defence - usual except Lowton in for Hutton (with injuries do we have much choice?)
Midfield - rest Sanchez, play Richardson and Cole and someone else - Gardner?
Up front - Benteke needs to play (and score), Robinson, Grealish?

Some other players need to be on the bench, but such is my pessimistic streak, we could lose this and provide more super headlines for the neutrals!

Will see us huffing a puffing for 85 minutes getting more and more desperate before Blackpool pop up with a late winner.

Groundhog day again and Lambert maintains his impressive and consistent record of going out to lower division opposition.

I couldn't care less if we lose, it just doesn't matter. Nothing will change if we do anyhow.

Unless Stan Matthews appears out of the shower (like Bobby Ewing) and plays we might win. But more than likely it will be a draw bore of little quality.

Unless we get lucky with an early goal, I fear we'll get more and more desperate and give away a dead ball situation in a good position or a penalty and out we'll go again.

It's a given that we won't score so a scoreline beginning Villa 0 is very probable. I think Blackpool will replicate the exploits of many others from the lower leagues.

Quite simply, this represents the club's only remaining chance of providing the fans with some excitement (of the enjoyable kind) for the remainder of the season. If we don't get through Lambert should be sacked. He won't be, but I'd still expect him to realise that would be the general supporter-consensus and therefore pick a strong team. I'd guess at;

Given; Lowton, Okore, Clark, Cissokho;  Westwood, Sanchez, Cleverley; Agbonlahor, Benteke, Grealish.

That club is a shambles top to bottom. We've got to be winning this. Lambert can't get away with dropping another bollock in the cup again. I don't think there's a club in the league in quite the mess that Blackpool are.

Completely agree about publishing his phone number being completely out of order.

Just thought it was an interesting insight into the workings of an owner who really has no interest in the club or the fans and runs the thing as a personal indulgence.

We can (with could reason on a number of points) criticise the way the club is run as a sporting institution at the moment, but I'd rather we endured another 5 or 10 years of this tedium, than Randy sell out to the first chancer that offers more than a roll of used fivers just to get rid.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack another thread on the merits of change at the top.

The flippant (and my original answer) was 0-0.

Having thought about it I'll go for an eye wateringly poor performance in a 2-0 win. We'll huff and puff our way to a  scrappy goal at the end of each half.
Lambert to use the word excellent 15 times in the post match interview, particularly in reference to our 82% possession, ignoring the fact we only managed 2 shots on target.

Given; Lowton, Okore, Clark, Cissokho;  Westwood, Sanchez, Cleverley; Agbonlahor, Benteke, Grealish.
You can't play Westwood Sanchez and cleverly in the same midfield and expect to move forwards.

a) This is Lambert we're talking about
b) what are the alternatives?

I suppose he could play either Bacuna or Richardson in there, or look to play Cole instead of Cleverley?

Paul Lambert has warned his players that Blackpool will come to Villa Park with real freedom.

Lambert says the Tangerines will be unburdened by the shackles of Championship survival struggles as they arrive in B6 for the third round encounter.

And the Villa boss says his team must be wary of that as they look for progress in the world's most famous domestic knockout competition.

Lambert has several injury and suspension problems affecting the likes of Ron Vlaar, Nathan Baker, Fabian Delph, Philippe Senderos and Libor Kozak.

But he promises he will go as strong as possible for the tricky tie with former Blues boss Lee Clark's men, who currently lie at the foot of the Championship table.

He said: "I think it's a good opportunity to get through. That's what we will try to do - we will go as strong as we possibly can to get through.

"It gives everyone a break from the league, which is really, really tough.

"It's been a hard period - the Christmas and New Year period is hard - but the Cup game gives us an opportunity to get through.

"I will go as strong as I can to get through. There was losing Ron and Fabian will still be out so there's still ones who will probably have to play again come Sunday."

Asked if he was wary of the Seasiders, he continued: "Yes. You have to be.

"There's nothing to lose for them. They will come out and give it a go.

"I am pretty sure they won't sit in.

"It's a Cup game so it will probably be a breather for them from the league.

"They are having a hard time in the league and Lee has gone in at a difficult time.

"It's a tough match. You'd like to think they will come and give it a game.

"I don't know Lee that well. I have spoken to him a few times but I know Alan Thompson really well. He's a good friend from Celtic.

"But for us, we just have to make sure we get through."

Reading a Lambert interview is a bit like watching an American tv show, where they're continually showing you previews of what's coming up later in the show. In the same way that they manage to turn 10 minutes footage into 30, Lambert has this incredible knack of turning 2 sentences into about 3 paragraphs.

watching Tranmere vs Swansea. Donacien has done ok. Surprised to hear that Swansea hadn't scored more than a goal in the past 6 games and for most of the first half looked every bit like us. Pretty much all of the ball and nothing else in the final third. They've also actual given away the most points this season from leading situations this season. Then once the first went in it looked pretty easy for them. Hoping that it is like that for us tomorrow and that Blackpool provide us with the right platform to get a few of our boys rolling again.

Probably are on for sub 20K due to three home games in a week at this time of year. Not easy on the pocket and Blackpool aren't exactly much of a draw.

And this is what he said.

Very good question SH. You can be fairly confident that if any of our first team squad gets something like a bruised toe they will be out for half a season at best....and probably more!  Which makes me wonder about our medical people. Do they really know what they are doing?

VILLA v BLACKPOOL: Get down to Villa Park early today to buy/collect tickets.
Miss the queues by arriving promptly in B6 pre-match.
You'd probably find longer queues in Chernobyl.

I've seen one Villa shirt on this train from Euston. Normally there are a fair number, even these days. I think it'll be a very small crowd and the home fans will be tense and nervous,  all of which will make for a pretty poor atmosphere. I think it's up to the team to lift the fans and not the other way round.

Right. Back to work tomorrow. Cheer me up, Villa. Smash these.

6-0.

A few changes to the team today and a victory will be the case. A cup run which , with a bit of luck, can bring some continued momentum to Villas season

Just parked up very easily very close to the ground. I'm guessing 14k

With our new style I am predicting 90% possession and 1-0 through a penalty when Blackpool goalkeeper misses a corner leaving a  defender to punch it away.

You shouldn't  really park under the stand in Trinity Road?

It's not being shown anywhere, even abroad, so no streams today.  There's always Jack Woodward's commentary on the OS ;)

A little concerned about lack of shocks so far...there is bound to be one today?

Shame isn't it? A few seasons ago we used to get big crowds for cup matches. Sensibly priced and the fans turned up regardless. The last few years has really strangled the faith out of the fans.

You could argue the F.A have played their part as well. Like someone mentioned on another thread, why on earth is there another game three days after the first ones?

Well if we score the media will report it as a shock

Yeah the FA Cup just isn't what it once was. It gets treated like muck now and the whole tournament has been slowly in decline since Fergie decided to take his Utd side out of it that year (98-99?) and also since the Old Wembley shut up shop.

That said I'd still bloody love to win it. But if I was asked to name the last 5 winners I'd seriously struggle.

Thanks lads. Was going to go but the OS stopped allowing sales about 90 mins before KO which is a bit daft cos I only live down the road and would have printed a ticket at home.

Couldn't be arsed going ticket office.
