Title: Clubs you are/were glad to see the back of
Post by: Gregorys Boy on July 28, 2014, 09:59:37 AM
For whatever reason, be it our shocking record against them, personally dislike of them, style of play, horrible ground/area etc..  What clubs that have gone down which you have been glad to see the back of?

Dealing with the Small Heath one first, when they were thrashing us every season during the Brucie years then I was pleased to see the back of them, but more recently when the roles were reversed I was more than happy for them to stay up as long as they wanted.
Something tells me we might be playing them again very soon ???

Anyway,  I would say Fulham is one for me, we had a rotten record against them more so at their place (which is a shame as its a nice place to visit!). Remember seeing one of my worse Villa games there in 08 when they looking nailed on for the drop, and it was Hogdson's first game in charge and wouldn't you just know it they beat us 2-1 with a last minute JIMMY BULLARD GOAL! :-[  We were goal up too.   We seem to save our worse performances for trips to the cottages, last season was another prime example.  We'd actually had a decent start to the season, and looked in okay shape ahead of the game, they on the other hand had been awful.  Then the curse of the new manager struck again (why couldn't they wait another week to ditch Jo? :'(), they won a one sided half two nil, and the game was dead in the second half.   They even did the double over us last season.    In fact this goes back quite a few seasons, to when they up set us at Villa Park in the Cup, this during the Keegan years (now sold at a discount price on DVD), this was the same season that we had been run away leaders in the league and yet against second Division Fulham we barely mustered a decent chance on goal all game.  Fulham for me, even though a couple of people I know support them, they had a decent enough run in the top league, so I hope we won't be playing them for awhile.

Yep, even when they were crap, which has been most of the time outside of the MON years they always looked world beaters against us.

I was over the moon when QPR went down and gutted when they came back-up. Hate everything about them. The ground, The Supporters, The manager, a lot of the current players.

I remember reading that they had a higher wage-bill than Borussia Dortmund last season and that, to me, highlights everything that's wrong with English football at the moment.

Leeds can take as long as they like coming back.

In terms of being scummy, Leeds are the ones that I want to stew in misery for as long as possible. They always caused trouble every time they came to Villa Park.

Coventry and Small Heath going down (again) was amusing.

We had a rubbish record at home to Wigan, but weren't bad away against them. Apart from their horrible owner they seemed nice enough.

I gather Northampton Town had a good record against us....

Both Leicester (our bogey side) and QPR are back up and we never, ever win at Crystal Palace  :'(

Coventry. I was beside myself at half time in their last game at Villa Park when it looked like we were going to let them off the hook again. When Angel and Merson's goals went in I thought that the whole ground would explode.

Cov away was always good though. I'd like to get them away in the cup. They'd loan the Ricoh for a game for that I reckon.

And we'd fill it for them!

Birmingham obviously. QPR are a pointless club, their ground is awful too. Chelsea is another obvious one, I hate how people consider them a big club now.

Man Utd, Real Madrid, and Bayern are all horrible clubs.

For me its Wimbledon of the Dave Bassett era. A team made up of thugs who seemed to just kick the opposition all over the park. Sadly it looks as if they're on the way back up, hopefully they'll be a lot different next time round.

Pretty much everyone really. Any team that we beat thoroughly deserved it and were lucky to get away with whatever the scoreline was. Equally any club that beats us has committed a crime against humanity.

Only glad to the shit go down. Would have been funny to see Everton go in the 90s in the way it's funny to see big clubs struggle. I remember them singing to man U - 'You're Going Down With the Villa' to man U in the mid 80s. Not that that bothered me I saw it as a token of their respect. I daresay we don't get that anymore.

I also wonder how many other fan's forums would say us if we had gone down in the last two seasons for being boring and shite?

Wimbledon and their massive away support. Biggest bogey side ever!

Small heath for so many reasons.

Boro, what a horrible place.

Coventry, for being a pain in the ass and helping Man United to pip us for the 1992/93 Premier League title.

Wolves, their fans seem in a timetrap (they all must like Mrs Brown's Boys).

Crystal Palace, we never, ever win at their place no matter how good we are and how shit they are??

Chelsea, vile fans.

Millwall, as above and became a bogey side in the late 80s.

All three of the clubs who have at some point contributed to my many miserable visits to Selhurst Park. Palace, Wimbledon and Charlton. Also Oxford. Their old ground was a dump and I didn't like their fans either. Add Grimsby to the list too due to their fans and the local police. The police at Leicester were quite hard to love too. Also the Nottingham police and their antics in 1989.

After Tony Dorigo had left us for them because we had gone down. Was that also not the time that Ken Bates wanted to put up an electrified fence at Stamford Bridge? In fact I think he might even have installed one but was made to take it down.

Really?  I remember quite a few VP wins against Boro, including a 5-1 in 93 which the first time I saw Villa, a 3-1 near the start of 98/99, and a 1-0 I attended also in the late 90s.

Am surprised at all the Coventry mentions.  Always, thought the hate was more on their part.

Newcastle is a classic case, unlike Chelsea they remain a boogy team to this day.   Seem to thrash us a lot at their place, and noramlly get at least a draw at ours, sometimes more.  Whats really annoying is that since the Sir Bobby days often we have been as good, or better then them.

We have awful home records against both Liverpool and Arsenal.  I think we have not beat either at Villa Park since the 90s?  Would like to see that end this season.

in all my travels I have never come across a decent Coventry fan, they all seem to hate us with different degrees of hate, one lad bordering on some serious violence when he found out I supported the Villa, and some of their following spat on me and my mate as we left the delightful Highfield Rd after Garry Thompson scored back in the day.

Living down here in Cambridge the delusional Spurs and the delightful supporters of Chelsea are certainly on my list as clubs I would like to see plummet down the divisions.

I've an irrational dislike of Manchester City which pre-dates their lottery win.  It goes back to the late sixties to mid-seventies.  They had the likes Asa Hartford, Bell, Sumerbee, Lee and a fuckin yokel called Tony Book who was older than Methuselah when they bought him from Swindon.

During this period there was a media wankfest about them that was nauseating.  Colin Bell, they inferred was the best player ever, Sumerbee was on a par with Stanley Matthews and City were going to rule the first division for years to come.  They sank faster than the Titanic.

Oh, they had Malcolm Allison too.  That in itself was enough.

City when they were balancing from from Prem to Championship were one of our boggy clubs too.  Even if they are doing it the wrong way.  I can't really begrudge their fans the success they are enjoying now, they have suffered more than most over the years and have stuck by their team all the way.  And it is good see a role reversal with them and Utd, as long as City don't do this for twenty years like their neighbours then I don't mind.

Apparently we only won the title because they were playing a lot of FA Cup and European games on top of their league schedule. Apparently they were a better team than us. Which is an interesting opinion considering in the following two years we went on to win the European Cup and European Super Cup and they won bugger all.

My prediction for this time next year - Leicester.

Utterly despise Chelsea, Man U and any club at the given time who are associated with Harry 'I can't read or write, honest' Redknapp.

Small Heath - a decreptic bunch of hatefilled jealous Neanderthals. Cov - their equally ugly though more irrelevant cousin. They stand up because they hate the Villa, you know.

Newcastle don't like us because we rubbed their nose in it when they got relegated. Apparently the Vera Lynn song didn't go down too well.

Honourable mentions to Cardiff & Wolves - like the Knuckle Draggers above but less legibile

SHA,Coventry,SHA, Leeds,SHA, Millwall oh and SHA.

It always annoyed me in '81 when the media were all over Ipswich and we pi**ed on their party.

Apparently we only won the title because they were playing a lot of FA Cup and European games on top of their league schedule. Apparently they were a better team than us. Which is an interesting opinion considering in the following two years we went on to win the European Cup and European Super Cup and they won bugger all.

I still love that even now, 33 years later they still go on about it, don't you Mr Brazil?

Only thing is in their defence is that they beat us 3 times that season but we still won the league, happy days.

Why don't they ever bang on about how they should have won the league the year after, but Liverpool won because they cheated in some way, like by winning more matches than them?

Worth pointing out that we finished miles ahead of Ipswich in the end, it would have been a bigger margin of victory if it was 3 points for a win.

We took 4 points of Man Utd in 1992/93 and knocked them out of the League Cup - it meant bugger all in the end though.

They also lost to Norwich in their only derby. We played approximately 78 (I can't be arsed to work out how many) derbies that season and didn't lose a single one.

Maybe they shouldn't have prematurely started celebrating their title win in the dressing room at Villa Park. Because having recently read Kenny Swain's autobiography it really pumped the Villa players up.

And it also gave birth to one of the most famous Villa quotes... "Do you want to bet against us?"

That quote still sends a tingle down my spine

We didn't deserve to lose the game at Villa Park against them and we were robbed by a blatant handball in the FA Cup game at their place.

I've always hated Chelsea, even before the money arrived for them to start buying trophies.
A club that has always been  totally devoid of any class, soul, or spirit.
Ken Bates, David Mellor, The Shed, assorted stuck up celebrity actors and luvvies always seem to support them.
When they were shit they thought they were good but just had a bunch of overated prima donnas like Alan bloody Birchnall, Alan bloody Hudson or shitheads like Ron chopper Harris...chopper? just call him what he was, a dirty bastard. To think I paid good money to see him as an after dinner speaker, thick as two short planks I nearly fell asleep listening to his boring cockney accent.
Stamford Bridge in the 1970/80s was the most depressing place imaginable, a big bowl of concrete and fences where you were miles away from the pitch. No atmosphere partly because you were so far away but also because the home fans on the terrace didnt have the first clue about how to cheer on a football team. They were too busy polishing their bovver boots or arranging the next meeting of the local National Front branch.
Chelsea make all the other cockney bastard clubs look almost reasonable.

we were the best team in 1981 check the records, any bolox saying otherwise is bolox. Ipswich were second best, as sed by fellow Villa fans earlier if we were playing for 3 points for a win, we would have won by a landslide.

I personally hate Chelsea the most cuz they've lost their fans , have just jonny come lately, red bin dippers cuz the plastics are just that, and know fuck all about football, no disrespect to the real Liverpool fans but their seriously out numbered , and of course sha as they are anti football and seem to hate us more than support their sad little club.

Might be a bit biased as my Antie and my late Uncle supported Chelsea, but I actually don't mind Chelsea.   Even when they struggled they were a well supported club, and there has always been a certain amount of flair to their teams.  It has been harder to like the more recent Chelsea model, sometimes you just can't win though.  At first people were pleased to see another club other than Arsenal/Man Utd dominate, but then they get too much of a good thing..

They had a good brief spell in the 70s against us but generally their record is very poor against us. Only 6 wins in last 30 league meetings.
Also I can't really dislike them for Bosko Jankovic's heroics alone in 1981.

Teams that think Villa are bothered about them are quite annoying, so Coventry, Leicester and Stoke come into that category.

But you have to respect that Big Sam would never accept winning a game with a free kick and a penalty. As far as he is concerned it is only a deserved goal if it involves twenty or more passes and comes into the 'total football' category. If he ever won a game by set pieces alone he would do the decent thing and offer to replay the game. That is why he is so loved by the club's owners and fans.

Chelsea for the reasons well expressed by Andy, and West Ham.
The club and their fans have an undeserved reputation abroad, people even tend to think that they invented the claret and blue shirt whereas is well noticed thay they took the shirt from the Villa.
Plus, they always boast that their ground has something to do with Ann Boleyn, that is completely false.

Apparently Luton have turned into the Manchester United of the lower divisions, taking thousands to places like Tamworth.

Which is more than they used to take to Villa Park in the old First Division.

T'was always them and Wimbledon who took ridiculously small allocations, usually less than 600.

My childhood/early ST holding life was haunted by MON's Leicester.  I can't remember the exact numbers but we either didn't beat them at home or at all for a huge run of games until a Tommy Hitz right footer from the edge of the area got us a win at their place I think.  Horrible team full of dirty gits like Savage and Dickov  Also didn't Ade Akenbeyi score his first goal in about a million games in front of the Holte End?  A toe poke from a yard whilst Dickov was fouling the keeper IIRC.

I'm upset they're back.

PS.  Howard Webb has retired. Very glad to see the back of him.

Another example of Luton. Playing the big I Am at Forest Green Rovers.

I have never forgiven Leicester for using the financial loophole of screwing the people they owed money to and then spending a fortune after it was settled.

They are the reason that points deductions for administration were brought in.

We drew two each.

Farewell, Howard the Coward!

Hopefully, the glowing tributes on your retirement will not include recollections of the non-penaltyaward at Wembley in 2010.

A bottler when it counted.

He's talking about the FA Cup Semi against Chelsea where we didn't get a penalty. Dowd did award the penalty in the Carling Cup Final - he just didn't send Vidic off.

Don't forget horrible Taggert and Elliott, dirty bastards they were. We'd usually batter them for 90 minutes and end up losing.

Not jumping on the anti-Webb brigade.  He has consistently been on best officially, and by appearing in major finals and International tournaments has done this country proud.  He did have a lack luster season last year so it is maybe a good time to get out.

The hacienda

Finest club there ever was. Fantastic nights in there.

I am too young, but from the early 90s on it used to be full of the Gooch apparently, flashing their guns around the place.

Its apartments now. You can see it on the train just before Deans Gate on the way into Oxford Road.

Not just Gooch - Cheetham Hill and Salford as well. That's why it was much better to have gone in the late 80s, before it went to shit.

Its odd becames sometimes the dislike for a club actually comes more from the impression you get of through the media, than such factors as their fans, ground, our record against them etc...

QPR are a bit like that for me.  I saw Villa play them a couple of times during the 90s, and at that point there was something quite charming about them.  They were a small modest club, with strong support who were able to punch above their weight for awhile.  Also, my Mum's boss at the time was a QPR fan and he was a nice bloke.  Anyway, it seems their money and over the top ambious has changed all that.  And it would be good for Villa if they went down of course.

Doesn't help that they've got Appy Arry in charge either.

That applies to anyone he manages at any given time.

An utter twat

Did meet a nice AFC Wimbledon fan on a train last season, who was with another Villa fan, so you know sometimes the gods do shine on us :)
