Albrighton is the Daniel Bryan of our team, in that the fans are literally screaming for him and chant his name while he's not playing. Yet management refuse to make him the star.

Lowton is Dolph Ziggler, the guy who gets buried and has clearly pissed someone big off behind the scenes.

I expect Remy and Gouffran to be briefed to target Baker and  Bacuna and to be relatively successful at it!

Play poorly? I completely agree mate, he should have started. Newcastle are weak at the back and I would have fancied Albrighton to cause problems. Instead, we revert back to KEA and his tedious brand of football. Still, I think we'll win 3-1. Up the Villa!

Don't see why he prefers baker to Clark - Lowton once again not in the 18 and albrighton benched - who knows what will happen - we are so inconsistent we could either win or lose by a large margin.

Look better than he has I suppose. Still don't see what Albrighton can really offer other than random balls into the box. Very few of which reach an intended target.

Anyway, we have to choose one way or the other. Go for it more which sees us concede more but will show the best of our attacking side. It seems the siege mentality, backs to the wall clichéd type stuff is the only way you see the best of this team. Other than the odd other showing we have gone for a tighter defense but at the detriment to any attacking forays.

Delph has been the one player to have come on this season but he's carrying the midfield and is starting to make mistakes. That saying you don't know which Villa will turn up. If it's the good one we'll beat anyone. If it's the one that we have seen other than that team it's about capitalising in the few moments we have the ball in dangerous areas. Otherwise it'll be drab until we concede.

Come on Villa. Big win today please.

He just played better than Weimann in the last match, no matter when he was on the pitch. He may well be better as an impact sub, but he just played better last time, and deserves to start.

Never liked him since he was at west ham saying a club like west ham should always be beating teams like aston villa.

I'm not Weimann's biggest fan but I think he works harder and is less prone to giving the ball away in silly areas. I also think as an option to bring on against a tiring defence, Albrighton is the better bet. In an ideal world, for me, both would be on the bench and we would have better in front of them.

Don't understand Bacuna at right back, Baker rather than Clark or Albrighton on the bench and I see I'm not alone. Hope it works out.

Our strong suit. Fast attacking football, seems set up to hurt their defence. Their midfield is quite powerful though and they have Remy back. Hmmmm.... Still, come on Villa.

Pity Remy has just finished a 3 game ban - these players always seem to return against us! Still, good to see Ben Arfa is out and I think they'll miss Cabaye - both were very good at Villa Park against us last September.

True, and unnecessarily. We have the man advantage in midfield against their rusty old 4-4-2. We just have so much space when we come forward.

There seems to have been a conscious effort to play a much wider game today, and we seem to be attempting more crosses than I've seen for a while.

That's a positive thing from Lambert, seeing as he was so definite that width wasn't important a little while back.

Agreed, Delph has been very quiet. We look comfortable to be fair. First goal will be crucial. Desperately could do with a better player than Kea in midfield. Can't understand what Baker is doing in the team but Vlaar is the one making mistakes thus far.

Need more from our full backs going forward and Westwood to keep up his form.

Westwood  playing pretty well. We've frustrated them quite well but Gabby looks our only threat up front, Benteke won a few headers but a bit off the pace, Weimann some good touches. Should have been 1-0 down just on half time but they didn't take their chance.

Vlaar falls over, Baker, seeing the danger, gets sucked to the ball leaving us in greater danger. Dear me. Still, they've defended well on the whole. We really could do with putting these lot away. Good, comfortable half for us so far. We've kept both their crowd and attack very quiet, and they've literally been feeding off scraps and the odd defensive error. Oddly, we've had more possession than expected and passed the ball around quite well, on the contrary to Lambert's media comments.

- Westwood has been very effective in the deep-lying play-maker role, and has rarely put a pass wrong, also nice to see him looking to go forward for a change, rather than every pass being sideways or backwards.
- Bacuna actually looks like a right back and has been solid, amazingly.
- You can see how badly Newcastle are missing the flair and creativity of Cabaye and Ben Arfa
- Biggest downside is that we should be ahead, hopefully we won't rue our misses
- Delph still giving the ball away a fair few times, surprisingly KEA's outshined him a bit.

Westwood needs to be more positive, and take control of the game. Not under any pressure from Nooocastle, needs to be more effective and pick a better pass.

Gabby for me is Villa summed up, looks brilliant at times, but sometimes his touch, vision, pass, is lacking.

Bacuna looks a quality RB by the way.

I'll be surprised if Newcastle are that poor again in the next half, so Vlaar and Baker need to get a grip after that abomination at the end of the half. Newcastle have been poor,  but they do have quality players in the team that could easily get through our defence if we're not careful.

Also, I think I'd probably sub Benteke off, but if that meant Holt coming on then I probably wouldn't, if only because it would probably mean more hoofing.
Title: Re: Newcastle United v Aston Villa Match Thread

Fairly even half.

We look so much physically weaker than Newcastle, our players just bounce off them.
Vlaar and Baker both looking very good.
Westwood playing with some confidence, unlike Delph who just looks like the weakling in the playground. KEA second best to every ball but got in some great advanced positions.
Credit to the Newcastle defence, they've kept it tight for us at the back. We need to create space rather than playing into their hands.

We need to press them harder second half and run at them.

Their best moments have come directly from Vlaar's mistakes. His positioning just there was horrible, drawn to the ball like a schoolboy.

Wish we would cut out hoofing every free kick from our own half into their box. It is pathetic and having zero impact. When we play short through Westwood we look miles better.

Maybe has a knock. Lambert never ceases to amaze. The amount of times Westwood should have been taken off, he never was. And today, when he's playing well, Lambert takes him off. I'd have brought Albrighton on. We concede a lot of corners.

Have we had a shot this half? It would appear the first half was our good one this game. Best we can hope for 0-0. Maybe Liverpool will get a winner against Swansea so we move up a place. We are so humdrum it's unbearable. It is so, so boring being a Villa fan at the moment.

Lack of quality and confidence...

Yeah but we will show quality and confidence often enough to hint it is there. First half we were well on top  of them them and pressed them hard. We are a Jekyll and Hyde team.

After 60 minutes of vaguely enterprising stuff we flagged and failed.
A lack of quality and experience; and really inept attacking. We could and should have taken a 1 or 2 goal lead in the first half. We didn't and Lambert has now to step up and do something different and effective.
