13/2 for us just to win. The previous 4 times I've bet on us I've won (although I did bet on us to lose against Sheffield 😳). Let's hope my luck continues!

Not going tonight, but don't know which programme to watch on telly ..

Do I watch the Villa game or Benefit Street on Channel 4 - Each would probably make me equally angry!   :(

Turning into a crap evening weather wise. Well have to brave the elements  and leave for VP now to sit back and watch our lack of possession and Arsenal slamming one in every five minutes!

5-3-2 - two attacking full backs, or 3-5-2 however you wish to look it. Right now, that's about as strong as we are going to be. Maybe Sylla/Bacuna for KEA.

Bacuna was one of the better players against Sunderland and did ok in midfield. Christ on a bike it's depressing seeing KEA in the side again. I'm not entirely sure why Lambert wants to give us such an immobile midfield with KEA and Westwood both in there.
That aside it's about as strong a side as we could probably put out, which isn't saying much.

Not fancying tonight at all. I'm hoping Gabby has one of his excellent games. That's where our best hopes lie probably. Benteke looks way, way off, but we'll see what he does.

Our Sky dish was knocked out by a storm and we have a 2 week wait for an engineer. So, I am watching MNF on the Sky Go app on an iPad. Novel. And if Villa win, I'll have to watch every game this way until we lose. Let's hope for a Huddlestone haircut type duration.

Title: Re: Aston Villa v Arsenal Match Thread
Post by: Dribbler on January 13, 2014, 07:23:08 PM
Well this is no doubt going to be a backs to wall type of performance and we'll be doing  a lot of 'playing without the ball' as Lambert likes to put it. Arsenal will however look to come forward and attack us so if we can hold a steady defence then we will have a chance to hit them on the break and maybe sneak a goal. My worry is that Arsenal have a lot of guile in the team though and you would think they would have enough creativity to pass it through us and break down our defence.

Hoping for a 1-0 breakaway goal against all the odds, not necessarily what i expect to happen though.

4-2-3-1 for the Gooners. And the front 4 are good at possession and shooting and assisting. KEA will get very dizzy.

Good to have 3 in the middle as arsenal midfield is devastating with the ball carzola and ozil need to be contained but I be happy with a 2 goal margin loss as the 3 points we had off them already a bonus . Ultimately our midfield won't live with hthem. I feel sorry for delph having to cope with weary and kea

What I fear with the 5 at the back is it suggests you're more solid, but I think with the likes of Baker and Luna players just tend to get in each other's way.

The flipside of that is it's counterattacking, with Benteke the target and Gabby the outball, which is how we beat Arsenal on day one, in fairness.

why do you assume 5-3-2?
3-5-2 minimises the defensive frailties of Luna and Lowton and maximises their attacking qualities. I only wish Bacuna (who is the future of our right MF) was there to cover the right side when required.

It's so weird that Lambert consistently sends the team out to play a counter-attacking style of game which relies so heavily on a solid defence when our defence is so completely dodgy.

Weird, and absurd.

Where do you start, inability to hold the ball up front, lack of movement/ability in midfield, too pedestrian at the back.Lambert should have no more money, we are destined to go down with this bloke.

He's been shit since coming back from injury. I think the England talk was a little silly in retrospect, he just happens to be well above anyone else we have in CM. He's a very good athlete but a mediocre footballer if we're being brutally honest.

I watch week in week out other sides at least have a go. Sides that might end up losing but they do so having had the audacity to take the game to the opposition. I've seen Stoke and Palace this weekend have a go, not be afraid. Yes they lost, but did so in an effort to win. I haven't seen that in a good number of games from us, and we fold like a cheap tent way too readily.

This villa side does look worryingly poor. It's like how I imagine our youth team would look playing a premier league side. Just less good in any way conceivable

Half time. We were doing OK until two mistakes cost us dear and it was calamitous for a good few minutes after that. I actually think we've been passing it better tonight at times.

El Ahmadi had been absent, Luna too. Lowton looks so much better going forward. Delph is getting visibly frustrated.

We have to go for it now. Why not give Helenius a try? Or switch Gabby out wide so that we have an out ball, and play Wiemann and Benteke through the middle.

But no, we will probably just whimper and die without any tangible change in formation or tactics.

Arsenal are, as usual, by far the best team in the league. It's so easy when you watch them play. I'd love our players to have Wenger train them for a month.

Could be any number of goals to nil if Arsenal want to.

When we have the ball in their half we only lose it, can't pass, can't beat a player and going to get hit on the break in the second half for another 2 or 3 goals.

The Gooners don't have to worry, they know we aren't going to score.

ambert just doesn't have a clue what to do.

But to be so utterly negative, guileless and scared of them, at home, is really dreadful.

When we do not have the ball we are casual, lazy, disorganised and clueless.  Too many players hiding.  You defend from the front and the midfield are not allowing the two forwards to press as there is too much of a gap between the midfield and the forwards.

Two observations;
1. Lambert once again proves to be a clueless twat, formation keeping them at bay, we get an injury and he changes it back to 4-4-2 when there was no need. Holes appear again in defence and the predictable outcome. Bacuna and Luna as wing backs with the other 3 at centre would have been fine.
2. Wilshere really is a bow legged bellend isn't he?

Despite losing 2-0 I don't think we've been as clueless as we usually are. We still never look like creating a goalscoring chance despite having numerous chances to put a decent ball in the box, it's just get it in and hope for the best. Gabby and Benteke may as well not be up there, not only do they get poor, desperate service, they get no support from anybody.

The lack of confidence of our midfielders is the main weakness. Hopefully KEA will be sitting in the crowd second half.

The passivity is what shocks me most. Being a lesser player than your opponent is one thing but time after time at home our players just retreat.

How can you have 10 men behind the ball in your own half and still have the opponents passing around and through you with absolute ease. No challenges, not getting tight. How can the manager, the coaches tolerate this.

Westwood and El Ahmadi play like they're paralysed. How many times can Westwood not track back before he realises that his indolence is killing us?

We are just a fucking cowardly, scared mess.

My prediction: we will huff and puff for the first few minutes of the second half, but ultimately it will be fruitless and we will lose by 3 or 4.

Going to plan so far.

it's taken us to be 2-0 down and likely a bollocking at HT to show any kind of desire and passion. I fully expect if we don't find a goal somewhere that the effort will drop away and we'll fall for a counter and a 3-0 scoreline. At least we are having a go, but it all just seems a little too late.

We are an embarrassment, all these years to spend wisely and develop the squad.  Lurching from one shit decision to another, Randy needs to give Lambert money to spend on players and decent wages or we are fucked.

Yeah, to be at the front of the queue when they hit the canteen after training, for example.

And I'll be back at Villa Park when he'll freezes over.

Holt might show a bit of fight at least

Yeah, to be at the front of the queue when they hit the canteen after training, for example.

I would put money on that line up being quite tame to be honest and nobody taking the responsibility to go first or receive their scoop of mash. Small steps paulie. If Holt can show his canteen passion to the lads maybe they can expand on that elsewhere at sleepy Bodymoor

Well, thank fuck Benteke has finally scored. We have time to get something here. BELIEVE!!

We would probably be better with Doug for the simple reason that HDE would have to get somebody to do the heavy lifting of the chairmanship.   Anybody competent would be better than the vacuum which exists in our boardroom at the moment.

Interestingly, Christian Benteke's goal was his fifth goal in 16 matches, the same number of goals he scored in his first 16 matches last season. He then scored 14 goals in his last 18 matches to finish the season with 19. So maybe he's just coming into season now?

Confidence and belief. If you keep giving them the ball and against good sides they will punish you and drain the confidence from your bones. No footballer wants to be chasing the ball for 90 minutes. We have likely left this too late and Lambert has to be held accountable for that. How the team comes out and plays starts with him.
