Not massively thrilled with the starting line-up, but at least we have options off the bench.  Come on Villa!

If they're good enough for the bench then start them even if it's only for 60 mins.

Disappointed (worried?) no Delph or Gabby. Also thought he would have gone with Lowton at the back and Bacuna in midfield. Feeling less confident with that line up

Can't risk starting with 2 or 3 players who may only last an hour.

Not keen on the team. No counter attacking skills and that's why we have an impressive away record. Let's just hope we're not buried before we put the subs on.

Agreed on the latter point there, CJ, that seems the most salient. We all understand about player fitness and not rushing them back and all that stuff, but we were demonstrably improved in the last match by bringing Lowton on at the back and allowing Bacuna to go forwards.

Tonev is either gonna smash one in the top corner or hit one of their fans in the face. It's a win/win situation.

Yes. Common sense you don't start 2 or 3 players that you know are unlikely get past the hour mark. Unless you think the risk of spending the last 20 minutes down to 9 or 10 players is worth it.

Of all the variations I could think of I didn't think we'd name an unchanged side. Though lambert does like to do that after a win.

I've come round to keeping bacuna at right back for his defensive strengths. But the midfield looks weak and the front two static. Though it's possibly a line up to be nice and solid, there's not too much speed on the break.

But Weimann gabby and Delph to come on could give us a real gee up. I just hope it's not to come back from two down

I wonder what Delph's injury was, because he's been out a while. I'd rather have him in the team, but at least we have strength on the bench if we need to change something. Come on Villa please win.

Hmm, the starting line-up against Cardiff being rewarded for boring the arse off us for 75 minutes? Unless they're not ready - in which case they shouldn't be on the bench, stop playing silly beggars and put in our best players will ya?

I'd suggest that Sessegnon and Amalfitano are more creative than the options we have, but besides them and Benteke (if he can find his form) it looks like two extremely average sides.

The only reason I can think of for that starting line up is to contain them for an hour then bring on Gabby, and Weimann for the last 30 minutes to hit them hard and quick on the break as they start to tire.

Yeah, I think so, unless we are going to play a squished 433.

Anyway 4312 could be smart if we are going to bypass their midfield on the counter.
Title: Re: WBA v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: supertom on November 25, 2013, 07:56:33 PM
Against Cardiff Tonev seemed to alternate between playing left wing back, making us a 3-5-2, or floating in midfield, where we then looked more like a 4-3-1-2. I think it'll be similar to day. When Tonev hugged the touchline Baker/Clark seemed to tuck in and make it 3 centerhalves. But depending on who out of Baker/Clark play on the left hand side, neither is going to get forward much if they're in the fullback position.

Honestly, that's such an ordinary, mundane looking side. The only thing I think this will effectively mean is that the game is going to be pretty dour. I think Lamberts put out a side to try and physically match the Baggies in a tough Derby game. We should be fairly tight, but I'm guessing we're banking on some Benteke magic to nick the game.

Wow. Honestly didn't expect that sort of quality from Long. Baker got caught out though initially. He's not good enough to be honest. I'd be tempted to switch him and Clark. Not a fan of Baker at LB but Clark has been excellent in the middle.

Villa manager Paul Lambert: "We played well last time out against Cardiff. We've got a few from the injury room back so the team picked itself. Any derby game you play, it doesn't really matter what form you're in. The away support for us is fantastic and this will be a good atmosphere. If we play with our brains hopefully we will win."

Can't remember the last time we did, and today is no exception.

Listening to West Bromich Albion fans taking the piss as we hoof it from the back into touch is about as galling as it gets.   There are so many problems with this piss poor performance it isn't funny.
Is it just a poor performance or is this where we are?

I'm not sure mate, but unless we get a hold of it soon we're going down at least 4 nil tonight.

What has happened to Westwood? He spends every game hiding for most of the match now. I'm sick of our midfielders being on the ball, looking up and seeing nothing but West Brom players as available options.

Westwood comes off the pitch each game to be told that his OPTA passing stats are fantastic. Fantastic possession stats for five yards sideways, five yards backwards, five yards sideways. He's a nothing footballer.

We could of. They have had three chances. One long ball, one suicide and one very good cross. Two went in.

We have had two chances. One excellent power strike on target, one longball which hit the bar.

Thin margins really. Their passing has been miles better than ours though.

Why no subs yet Lambert. He really is a donkey.

It makes no sense based on our recent history to sack the manager but I despair when he talks about how well we played against Cardiff. We were wretched against Cardiff until one moment of class lit up an extremely poor game. The midfield of Sylla, Westwood, Tonev and El Ahmadi have nothing to offer and certainly have no guile or craft to create chances for the forwards.

Westwood and El Ahmadi in particular....I'm feeling a visceral loathing for them both. Seeing them on the team sheet now, particularly together, is just an act of provocation by Lambert.

Sylla is just giving the ball away and baker just bought a dummy like it was maradona. I do agree he just isn't good enough. Westwood is nitting it together butt they're running through him too easily

Lambert really is annoyingly clueless sometimes. When it comes down to match changing decisions he's mostly too little too late or never. And unlike O Neill he's not got the quality of squad to paper over those cracks.

It's okay though, we've got Bowery on the bench to change the game at 85 minutes.

He picked up another injury last week too I believe. I mean I think he's finding it harder this season anyway regardless, but I'm not sure he's 100% fit yet. He's lacking a couple of yards he had last season.

Honestly, Herdy might actually improve our midfield. He'll give some energy and put his foot in. He played better the other season than KEA has ever managed, or Westwood to be honest. He's limited but the players playing are arguably worse.
Clark's a better ball player than either Sylla or KEA and has a better touch.

The defence looks a million times worse with Baker in.
Sylla is not a footballer.
Benteke thinks he's above playing for us. And is turning into a right whinging git.

Lowton on for Sylla, Bacuna moves forward.
Delph on for Westwood or El Ahmadi
Gabby on for Kozak

Bacuna has won us more points than he'll cost us this year, but the rest are cack.  Benteke cuts a lonely figure.

If Potato Head was going to stump up GBP5m for a seemingly disenchanted Shane Long on deadline day, we should get in there with a huge offer come January.  Just what we need.

Fuck Westwood off, absolute shite, get KEA off not good enough, get Kozak off, nullifying CB, bring on Delph, Gabby and Weimann, show a bit of passion, and a bito urgency.

That Mulumbu challenge summed us up, KEA half hearted, Westwood too slow and weak, Sylla just completely off it.

Lesson to PL....NEVER EVER AGAIN start with a midfield of Sylla , Westwood and KEA, completely offer nothing

Gutless, clueless, aimless, spineless and hopeless.
I saw the starting line up and expected little and somehow got even less. Very little to cheer or be cheer about here.
I really don't know where this team or club is going at the moment except perhaps another soul destroying relegation scrap. Our 4th in as many years.

Sorry for the grumpiness. Let's win it in the second half...
Title: Re: WBA v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: paul_e on November 25, 2013, 08:53:25 PM
really poor, Sylla has looked lost, KEA doesn't have the heart for it, Baker gets caught out of position far too often.  Tonev has something but it's just not working for him right now.

Clark isn't a left back but is a better central defender than Baker, so swapping that pair should be the first action.

We then need 4 subs so we can get Delph, Lowton, Weimann and Gabby on, I think there's a flaw to the plan though.

Two well taken goals and some uncharacteristic mistakes but we've fucking asked for this with the team we put out.

But it's the same team that beat Cardiff, and West Brom aren't really any better than Cardiff are they?
We just look lethargic, has someone been slipping us drugs?

It's not the same team that beat Cardiff. That team looked totally toothless for 65 miniutes or so. Albion probably are better than Cardiff but drugs is a fair guess. Why nobble the team when with one dose you can give the manager the mother of all bad trips?

This is like the polar opposite of last season's fixture. Hopefully we come good in the second half. I think we need to bring some of our better players on. It's only 45 minutes and it's no longer the points that matter. We need to give a decent account of ourselves because we've been shite so far.

I'm just hoping we can reverse the position from last year. Of all the players we can bring on I think Delph might be the most important, if he's fit enough.

Followed perhaps by gabby.

How depressing.

It is odd that we've kept an unchanged side despite having so many players back.

I think you can see that Albion are used to playing in that formation and with those players though.

Hard to blame the players - the general set-up of the team is as clueless as I can remember seeing for a while.

Benteke, our biggest weapon, dropping deep? He's not a creative mid ffs, his strength is outmuscling the last man and getting on the end of things.
Kozak playing ahead of him, with no support? He needs a nippy forward to play around him, that's 'big lanky immobile striker 101'.
No wide men? With two big strikers on the pitch? Eh?
The slowest midfield in Christendom with three players who are unbelievably shite in the opposition half?
Clark on the left? Again? Hasn't Lambert bought TWO left backs? Where are they?

I like Lambert, but you have to call a spade and spade, and this is a really shit spade so far.

The midfield does look very average indeed.

I was hearing Charlie Nicholas on Saturday talking about how much he liked midfielders running beyond the strikers and it got me thinking when was the last time a Villa midfielder linked up the play with the intention of running beyond the strikers? It's but one of the reasons why Westwood and El Ahmadi are a complete waste of time.

It's a lovely goal for Shane long that isn't it? Baker and Clark should have been tighter.

Second one is great too

Gary Neville making some good points about how split out defence was on the second goal.

There are a number of ways villa are perhaps set up to mirror some of the latest tactical thinking. But these are top clubs and players. Not convinced we've got the players to split our defence like that, or bunch so many players in the middle of the pitch.

Sylla and Bacuna don't like being in possession of a football which is often a major disadvantage for a football team. Not good enough, nor will they be.

Bacuna is fine but the mistake has affected him, you don't go from scoring a belter like he did after a great burst through the middle to never being good enough in an hour of football.  Sylla looks well short of fitness and skill, if he's been training like this I can understand why KEA has played so often.

It might have been a good first touch, but Baker was once again caught ball watching and out of position.

The problem with how we've lined up is that Clark doesn't have the raw pace to bomb up and down like Luna was.  He's probably reluctant to as well given the nightmare going on inside him.

We've started a lot of games at half pace this season & you can't get away with it every week.

We started with 3 at the back & we've got fucked almost every time we've played that system. Why does Lambert think we can play with 3 at the back? Baker is shit with the ball at his feet & has little or no awareness of attackers around him. He's great at recovery or last ditch challenges but that shows how poor a defender he is. Clarke is only marginally better.

The less said about Tonev the better.

Too many players who are not good enough or not ready at this level.

Bottom line is we are piss poor, lack quality & Lambert is tactically just as bad.

Clarke is a better manager than Lambert. he's produced a side from players that on paper are worse than Villa's but we're making them look much better than they are. Villa are just playing crap no idea football, if you can call it football.

Very poor all round - which is something we can go into after the game. The question is what can we do to salvage something out of this game which still has a whole half still to play...

At two-down we can't afford to carry three non-goalscoring midfielders. So take one off (KEA imo) get Lowton on, push Bacuna up to wide right with instructions to cross from deep to hit the big men. Give that 25 minutes then take a chance with Gabby/Weimann and Delph.

COME ON LADS - THIS AINT OVER

I was hearing Charlie Nicholas on Saturday talking about how much he liked midfielders running beyond the strikers and it got me thinking when was the last time a Villa midfielder linked up the play with the intention of running beyond the strikers? It's but one of the reasons why Westwood and El Ahmadi are a complete waste of time.

This has been maybe our biggest problem for years. Ian Taylor was probably the last midfielder we had who'd drive into the opposition box and score goals. Frustratingly, Petrov had just started to do it when he became ill.

Yeah I get that Bacuna has that in his locker but he isn't comfortable on the ball in a typical situation. It isn't good to lack that standard level of technical ability.

We've looked like McLeish's Villa far too many times this season to be honest. It's not good enough. Lambert needs to wise up, he needs to bring in better (proven) quality, and he could certainly do with a good number 2 to sort out how tactically clueless we look.

Also, we've got good kids coming through who can play football. Why has he bought in some of the shite he has? I'd rather see the likes of Johnson, Robinson, Grealish etc over players like Westwood, KEA, Bowery, Sylla etc.

We might say we've spent well and got great value on cheap players from lower leagues, but why buy them when we've got a decent academy producing players as talented if not more? Cannot fathom it sometimes. Not all those kids will make it of course (Baker of the established academy players isn't good enough), but a lot of them have as much chance as players like Westwood etc.

KEA is one of the worst players we've ever had. He's not even insultingly inept like some, he's just the total, utter definition of "Meh."

Post by: Morten on November 25, 2013, 09:04:36 PM

I really can not figure out what our tactics are ? pass it sideways a few times, then Westwood dropping deep to make a few sideways passes, and then finally back to Guzan, who kicks it long ?! There is no movement in midfield from KEA and Sylla, there is no balance at all in that midfield. They have all been bougth by Lambert. And I too do not understand the line up. When it was changed against Cardiff, it worked, not before. And now it is the same 11 again. 9 of the 11 players (including Guzan) are bought by Lambert.

Well, I will be more positive when it is 2-2...

He can improve with that but it does frustrate me how uncomfortable he looks dribbling and passing for a Dutch player, especially when you put the ball still on a dead ball and suddenly he turns into Ronaldo.

As far as I can make out, the main tactic is to whack it long to Benteke, who flicks it on to Kozak.

Now, although it makes me die a little bit inside, I can just about understand trying this tactic when the flick-ons are aimed into the path of Gabby. But what the yellow rubbery fuck is Kozak meant to do with 'em?

Started with three at the back? Not from where I'm sitting

Have a look at the position of all 3 for the first goal, looks very much like a back 3 to me.

One of the biggest problems we have is that there's no real pressure on anybody at the club to succeed . We lose, but that's ok because we're in transition. The players know they're not expected to win on a regular basis. The manager knows  his job is safe, whatever happens. And the owner is strangely distant from it all. The air of complacency around the club is palpable and has been for a while. We've settled for this.

He'd already marked the cards of the likes of Collins/Dunne etc. He had good ideas on rebuilding our midfield.
Seeing us continuing to persist with KEA makes me regret we didn't give Makoun more of a chance. He can't have been any worse, that's for sure.

I also think a natural progression from him could have seen us move onto Martinez, who a year down the line with good work in place may have taken the job.

I don't think Westwood had been that bad. Compared to many others at least. He's getting hold of the ball at least

Baker, bacuna, sylla kea and clark all worse

Even when we are pressing, we're creating nothing. Albion are not giving away free kicks on the edge of the area either to give Villa a dead ball chance.

I agreed at HT, but I'm so pleased PL didn't follow your advice!

Credit to the lads there.
At the start of the game I asked myself who in their right mind would consider our best XI to be missing Gabby, Delph and Weimann and I still am. I was like getting ready for a 1st date ,hoping to get lucky, but still deciding to stick your shittiest pants on. ?????????Lambert????????. Notice question marks all around Lambert still.
Title: Re: WBA v Aston Villa Match Thread
Post by: Morten on November 25, 2013, 09:57:25 PM

I feel more positive, by the way :-)

If they're good enough for the bench then start them even if it's only for 60 mins.

Can't risk starting with 2 or 3 players who may only last an hour.

against the risk of that team not being good enough and needing the same 2-3 players to drag us out the mire in the final 30?

Mystic Lee strikes again !
