Available Saturday afternoon @2pm.
-
Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany (C), Nastasic, Kolarov, Navas, Fernandinho, Toure, Milner, Negredo, Dzeko
-
Milner. Hmph.
-
@MatKendrick: Villa: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Baker, Clark, El Ahmadi, Weimann, Luna, Delph, Sylla, Kozak. #avfc
-
If I wasn't worried before I certainly am now
-
Interesting- no gabby - are we playing 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 ?
Nice to see sylla back.
-
What a bastard Lambert is. Play injured players man.
He is deliberately throwing home games in the league now.
Sack the man.
-
@MatKendrick: Villa subs: Steer, Bennett, Helenius, Albrighton, Bowery, Tonev, Lowton. #avfc
-
No gabby. 5-3-2 ?
Not good
-
@AVFCOfficial: Subs: Steer, Bennett, Helenius, Albrighton, Bowery, Tonev, Lowton. #AVFC #MCFC #AVFCLIVE
-
no Gabby - whats happened to him
-
@MatKendrick: Villa: Guzan, Bacuna, Vlaar, Baker, Clark, El Ahmadi, Weimann, Luna, Delph, Sylla, Kozak. #avfc
5-3-2 maybe? not sure on that at all, but come on Villa.
-
we have no luck with injuries . ffs
-
Well we had to change the formation and although it didn't work last season for us lets see how it goes today - interesting indeed.
-
No Westwood nor Gabby nor Benteke - our key players in 2013. Looks like 5-3-2. Lambo seems like a 'change is better than progress' type. In corporate life, they get job promotions but leave mess in their wake.
-
thank f**k they are under strength too - no Silva no Alguero no Nasri ;) only joking
-
I think we'll struggle badly as we don't have any attacking outlet really. However come on Villa try and win. We need to Gabby and Benteke back asap.
-
Well we had to change the formation and although it didn't work last season for us lets see how it goes today - interesting indeed.
Well, it worked at first - winning away to Liverpool and we looked quite solid that day. Once teams knew what our shape was going to be though, that's when it fell apart.

I'm hoping this is a one off change due to injuries.
-
The three stooges at the back...who is our cover when one of them invariably gets crocked?
-
baker to go off after 15 mins like normal ;(
-

It almost certainly is but I don't think having the flexibility to use different systems depending on the opponent and their tactics is a bad thing.
-
oh well , I wasnt expected to win this game , so If this is the weakest we will be this season , it might has well be this one....

I agree, hopefully it'll work today.
-
If we manage to score with that team, I will give everyone on here a hundred quid*.
*I won't really.

Who said that ?

own goal count?
-
Navas will have a blast against Luna.

Not with Baker on the pitch. I don't have that kind of money.
-
Is that three at the back? Uh-oh.
-
Navas will have a blast against Luna.
If he comes on!
-
I think it must be 3 5 2. It could be brutal.
-
Bacuna in midfield against Toure? This isn't going to be pretty.
Oh, looks like he's at right-back. Well, that's a plus point. He looked good there last week.
-
Anyone able to PM me information about decent, erm, small smooth flowing waterways.
-
I don't think we have the players to adapt to different formations...they're not intelligent enough
-
Bacuna in midfield against Toure? This isn't going to be pretty.
He'll be at right wing back. KEA, Delph and Sylla against Toure is going to be brutal, though.
-
Good formation for me (or at least as good as we could go given the injuries), I think packing the midfield with, in effect, 5 players is the way to go against City. Watch me eat my words after about 10 minutes though!!
-
As Confucious said: "Playing three centre-backs can go one of two ways. And it doesn't very often go the good way."
-
This could be the mother of all massacres. I just want them to fight like little lions.
-
so there's no chance it's 442 with Luna in front of baker on the left?
Given how far forward their fullbacks get I could see the advantage of playing that way, if Weimann is happy to sit a bit deeper and make an extra man in midfield when we're defending.
-
Would anyone take a 0-1 loss now? I think I'd be tempted
-
Would anyone take a 0-1 loss now? I think I'd be tempted
No, I'd never take a defeat before a game. I'm hoping the tactics in this game pay off for this one off game.
-
This could be the mother of all massacres. I just want them to fight like little lions.
They always fight. It's the quality that lets them down sometimes.
-
I feel the way I do when I'm sitting in the dentist's waiting room.
-
Would anyone take a 0-1 loss now? I think I'd be tempted
not this close to kick off. I tend to predict us losing games like this about 4-0 a few days in advance and then suddenly think we can win it just before the start. That feeling usually lasts about 5 minutes...particularly this season
-
VP looking no more than half full. Must be lot of people still outside.

Yep me too.
-
Right here we go, off out in the garden with my headphones on....was a good omen in that late run last season
-
What radio station is this on?
-
I'm not particularly confident of getting a result today, but fuck me, some on here take pessimism to new heights (lows?).
-
Looks more like wing backs than 5-3-2.
-
What radio station is this on?
Not on R5, they have my favourite (!) Bitters fan, Pat Murphy, reporting from the ground which is always a good omen...cough
-

Hope so, we need to pack midfield against this lot I think

Yeah I'd rather not listen to that rabble! Thanks.
-
Milner desperate to score against us I see
-
Milner nearly puts one away
-
I'm not particularly confident of getting a result today, but fuck me, some on here take pessimism to new heights (lows?).
Some of us are naturally like that.
If there was an Olympics for pessimism.............I wouldn't fancy my chances.

I'd get gold.
-
Murphy, the twat, with his usual positivity about us already on R5. He just loves seeing us on a downer and can barely conceal his glee
-
Jesus that's a piss poor line up. It's a bit frightening the gulf in class. But hopefully we'll stick it up those twonks today. Cannot stand City.
I would take a 1-0 loss right now though.
-
We never seem to take it to them as the home team
-
Started ok, but they look dangerous.
-
Sharp save from guzan
-
Afternoon chaps, hows it going?
-
thought that was in
-
fucking hell centre halves running into eachother.
-
Not enjoying watching this - city have had 3 chances in the opening 10 mins , we are too open to attack.
-
80 mins left, we can do this!
-

It's on Absolute Radio
-
For all the stick that Bannan got last year, I think it's now obvious that those floaty corners are a prescribed plan from training.
-
I know they are a good side, but sometimes we don't half make it easy with some of our half-arsed, inaccurate passing.
-
We're not sitting back like the last two home games.
-
I know they are a good side, but sometimes we don't half make it easy with some of our half-arsed, inaccurate passing.
I don't think it's half-arsed I think we are just a bit crap.
-
Martin Jol's position at Fulham looking increasingly dodgy...
-
Come on Villa precise passing please.
-
Once City get the first they will get 5 or 6
-
That big throw from Guzan seems our main attacking outlet today.
-
We're looking every inch a long ball side today.
-
They're getting on top now, the midfield needs to get some control.
-
the difference between these two teams is massive unfortunately
-
We're looking every inch a long ball side today.
I think today is a slightly exceptional circumstance.
-
Guzan's distribution lately has been really poor, he keeps putting the ball out.
-
Writing is on the wall i feel, city are in control.
-
We're looking every inch a long ball side today.
I think today is a slightly exceptional circumstance.
Almost every game has been a slightly exceptional circumstance. Watch Southampton or Swansea against the big sides - they can still keep the ball.
-
lump your house on a city win
-
We're looking every inch a long ball side today.

We have 3 huge forwards, it was always his game plan to knock it long....and it's in my opinion

Couldn't agree more monty, we give teams far too much space and respect.
-
Once City get the first they will get 5 or 6
What makes you think they will break down our defence?
-
Anybody on here see anything other than a City win today? We aren't in the game as an attacking force at all.
-
The midfield needs to do a lot more than just try to tackle, this isn't good enough. We're at home, we need to attack.
-

Indeed. The sad truth is, in my opinion, that we just aren't capable of doing so. Because we aren't very good at all.
-
Once City get the first they will get 5 or 6
What makes you think they will break down our defence?
Our defence.
-
I'm watching a spanish stream and they have just said the word, "Wimbledon" 3 times...I dont think they're talkign about the tennis

Who barely ever play at the same time? We don't tend to put it up to Benteke, we tend to look for the flanks.

We need something from the midfield.

if its the same as mine, its the best ive had this year

We absolutely look to get it from Guzan to Benteke.
-
Fucks sake Villa, we're at home we need to actually do something.

I can't say it bothers me either way, but we're definitely more of a long ball team than a short passing team.

Can't agree with you in all the games I've seen this year...apart from the Arsenal and Norwich game we didn't tend to do it much....the others I watched live and that's all we did, others would agree.
-

Canal+....its stable but the picture is terrible.
-
Trevor Francis is drooling over city - smug tosser!

Therefore as I have said before, when we play well we don't go long.
-
Another example as well ball into Kozak's feet and it results in an opportunity.

na min is espen spanish, all good

It's just long balls which are a problem though. We're not negative like Allardyce's sides, nor nihilistically thuggish like Wimbledon or Pulis' Stoke. We just unnecessarily give the ball away by going long, which is frustrating and undoubtedly stupid.
-
If we go long and finish above 15th, I'll be very happy.
-
Luna you lucky lucky boy
-
If we go long and finish above 15th, I'll be very happy.
I just don't think that's good enough for Aston Villa.
-

Precisely. We're actually a pretty bad long ball team.
-
The centre backs aren't the problem really, are they. We struggle so much to stop balls getting delivered into the danger area, it's no wonder they end up conceding. We suck at defending the flanks.
-
I don't want to see us habitually playing it long under any circumstances.
-
I have to say it but apart from maybe 3 players, this is a terrible side Lamberts has assembled, fair do's his hand have been tied.
-
Stop kicking the fucking ball away Villa, our midfield is far far too deep. If you want to play this three, then Delph has to play in front of the other two.
-
If we go long and finish above 15th, I'll be very happy.
I just don't think that's good enough for Aston Villa.
Me neither. What a depressing mindset!
-
hanging on here
-
i think it's fair to say we're yet to lay a glove on them
-
I have to say it but apart from maybe 3 players, this is a terrible side Lamberts has assembled, fair do's his hand have been tied.
Have they ? He must have spent about £30m in total - a lot more than many sides above us have spent in the last 18 months.
-
Luna you lucky lucky boy
Never a pen.
-
This isn't good enough, we need the midfield to do something. We don't need three centre halves, it's not helping.
-
Saying that, theres something in Bacuna I like, I think he might be a keeper....not a goalie though
-
i think it's fair to say we're yet to lay a glove on them
I think we left our gloves in the pub.
-
Luna you lucky lucky boy
Never a pen.
I know, its just the way he gets beaten all the time
-
Saying that, theres something in Bacuna I like, I think he might be a keeper....not a goalie though
If we ever play 4-4-2 again, I'd say Bacuna would be a pretty decent right-midfielder.
-
For some reason, I actually fancy us to go ahead.
-
we look so bloody fragile, like school boys when they have the ball
-
This is what it has been like at home for fucking years now, though, an inability to hold on to the ball without whacking it up field (this side, today, for example) or without relying on endless crosses into the box (MON's side).
No wonder our crowds are dodgy. If I think back to, say, the start of the MON era, I can genuinely think of about a dozen enjoyable home matches, tops.
I can think of hundreds of totally unsatisfactory ones, though. Not ones that we lost, necessarily, but poor matches.
-
It's all a bit McLeish this?
-
Once City get the first they will get 5 or 6
What makes you think they will break down our defence?
Our defence.
Fair point well made, you know it's only a matter of time...
-
Yes id rather have Bennett
-
Look at that. KEA does really well, using his quick feet to release Bacuna - and he strolls into the final third with no movement around him and shoots into the gut of the crowd. Not enough.
-
There you go Villa, when you pass through midfield a chance is created for Bacuna. That's the way to play.
-
Great example there, ball back to centre half, no pressure, whacks it up field, gets rid of it the instant he can, despite being under no pressure.
-
This is dreadful football to be playing at home - happens far far too often.
-
For some reason, I actually fancy us to go ahead.
I don't know what you are on but can I have some?
-
If we go long and finish above 15th, I'll be very happy.
I just don't think that's good enough for Aston Villa.
Me neither. What a depressing mindset!
rome wasn't built in a day. its a long term project and we either have the patience for it or we don't
-
they have the Villa bug
-
We are football fans, what football fans have ever had patience?
-
We are crying out for a creative midfielder.
-
Why are Swansea, a club who nearly left the football league, been a prem team for 3-4 seasons, so good!? Is it the cheap player they have, the coaching or both?
-
Fergal - Jennings Cockerhoop. Delirium Juice.
-
It looks like we're trying to bore them into submission. Seems to be working, so far.
-
If we go long and finish above 15th, I'll be very happy.
I just don't think that's good enough for Aston Villa.
Me neither. What a depressing mindset!
rome wasn't built in a day. its a long term project and we either have the patience for it or we don't
The project won't go anywhere if it's built on attacking tactics from the 1980s.
-
I think the knocking it long is largely down to us panicking. We can pass ok when we do try but it's rare that we all have the composure required as a unit. It's inexperience partly.
-
Lamberts teams didnt play like this at home when in charge of Norwich - it is dire turgid stuff.
-
From the sound of it I am happy I have decided not to watch.
-
Terrible sloppy passing again.
-
For some reason, I actually fancy us to go ahead.
I don't know what you are on but can I have some?
we very well may got a flukey goal but they well be unlucky to get just three
-
Dear God. The quality of passing through our team is abysmal.
-
What's happened to good ole man for man marking.
-
Lamberts teams didnt play like this at home when in charge of Norwich - it is dire turgid stuff.
Agreed. I've spoken before about the importance of Hoolahan to that side, and we don't have a Hoolahan.
-
And he said on his arrival here that we would always try to play entertaining football- ha!
-
I can understand playing defensively in this fixture. Yes, it's at home, but they're an excellent side, so from that point of view, it is understandable.
I would have thought, though, that when playing a side full of top quality players, it is of some importance to minimise the frequency with which you give them the ball.
We don't seem to be doing that. Too often we panic in possession and play what are, at best, 50-50 balls, and invariable give possession straight back to them.
Our only outlet seems to be the ball up to Kozak.
-
Delph is they only player I rate in that team today, I tell a lie and Guzan.
-
Our players always look physically weak as well, with the exception of Benteke.
-
And he said on his arrival here that we would always try to play entertaining football- ha!
I don't doubt that he's trying.
-

Don't mean to start a row, but if Lambert was relying on hoofball to keep us up in his second season we'd be fucked, he would fail and be sacked and yet another project would begin.
We are defending well today and that's something to be pleased about. But we have zero idea going forward. I can't get too cross though as most sides would miss Benteke and we miss Gabby.
-
I'd rather have the Togo guy than Karim
-
And he said on his arrival here that we would always try to play entertaining football- ha!
I don't doubt that he's trying.
Indeed. Very trying!
-
If we end up with a clean sheet after 90 mins Ill be amazed
-
we have been pretty awful. If they score, I just can't see us getting anything back...come on Villa, prove me wrong!
-
From the sound of it I am happy I have decided not to watch.
oh i don't know, the pitch looks good and Baker's had a nice haircut
-

It just seems a strange game in which to change the formation. Normally, we should be more attacking at home, I agree, but today is one of the days where we might have been able to make our counter attacking work; City aren't likely to sit back and play out a draw. 4-5-1, with Sylla in his more effective defensive role in front of the defence, Delph and El Ahmadi in the middle, Kojak up front and Weimann and Helenius/Tonev out wide.
-
I'd like to see the stat re where on the pitch the ball has spent the most time. It's hardly been out of our half.
-
Wonder what MOTD slot
-
We're nearly there. If we can just cling on for the next 47 minutes...
-
Fucking hell we need a change at half time.
-
Fortress Villa Park
-
I would hate being a forward for Villa....you never get a touch
-
Do you think it's part if the plan for today's game to just hoof it as far into the opposition half as possible?
-
just let him shoot Villa
-
there you go
-
Shit
-
Game over
-
Inevitable they would score - shit half indeed!
-
that was coming.
-
Talk about inevitable.
-
There you go.
That genuinely is game well and truly over.
A performance of zero attacking intent.
-
Is that francic on the commentary?
-
Hmm. Game over.
-
Love the way they all leave Toure and pick up thin air.
-

This is just like we play against Manure - we expect to hold on for 90 minutes and never actually do. We will get dicked now.
-
Never mind eh. They're a good bunch of lads, after all.
-
Villa concede just before half time shocker
-
crap Villa, fucking crap.
-
Been coming. Toure has been a class act to be fair. God I wish we had a midfielder even half as good as him.
-
There we go, well we've got what we deserved. Fucking atrocious. Need to actually put out a team to try and score in the second half.
-
poor
-
This is exactly like how McLeish played.
Disgraceful.
-
Lambert has made a huge custard in not buying that special midfielder and buying bloody Libor
-
well It was only one
I think we dragged them to our level for a bit
we just keep giving the ball away
kids against men

-
What a dreadful, dreadful performance. As bad as any of our worst showings over the last few years, and worryingly McLeish-esque.
There. I said it.
-
Home games are like clean sheets were, a monkey on our back. We need to do something. Having a go might be an idea. No movement or passing ability doesn't help though.
-
When we set up with zero attack in mind then we deserve this!! Can see why so many fans stayed away today.
Inevitable
-
Screw the cup, eh? This is what it's all about.
-
This team would not score if it played til midnight Shit tactics from Lambert yet again Albrighton should have started
-
There we go, well we've got what we deserved. Fucking atrocious. Need to actually put out a team to try and score in the second half.
absolutely correct, I agree 100%
It's abysmal mate, really abysmal. I'm so bored of watching Villa play so badly.
-
This is exactly like how McLeish played.
Disgraceful.
Don't worry , we'll pick ourselves up and go again :(
-
Thank fuck i sold my tickets on. What a load of shit!
-
'I dont expect Aston Villa fans to wait for 40 minutes before having a shot at goal.' No we wait longer.
-
Shockingly negative set up. Take a centre half off and put something into midfield or attack we have to actually create something. If you sit back you get beat, it's as simple as that.
-
It's just not good enough
-
The McLeish thing is true, though, it's indistinguishable.
No attacking intent whatsoever. I appreciate they're a good side, but have a fucking go, FFS.
We are nowhere near good enough defensively to soak up pressure like that against even the poorer sides, so why does he think it'll work against this lot?
No attacking intent at all, nothing.
-
I would like to say that we go again, but we haven't gone anywhere to start with.
No passion, no commitment, no quality, fuck all, nothing zilch we may as well have not turned up.
-
Outrageously one sided. Really, really poor Villa side this is.
-
KEA is the only midfielder who's played football today. The other two have barely touched the ball, as all six defenders (including the keeper) have launched it straight to Kompany whenever the ball's got near them, as if it's a handgrenade one pin short.
-
We really need to go for this. It's utterly pathetic. Kovak is struggling up on his own. No support, no service. Wiemann's poor.
I'd bring on Albrighton and Tonev to give us a bit of pace and width. There's really no point having 3 CH's today. Our CM is poor. Delph is typically energetic, but KEA is far too cumbersome, and none of our midfield have much in the way of ball control or incisive passing.
Take off KEA or Sylla, and Baker. Bring on two wingers and play Wiemann off Kozak. Or keep the mids, take off Andi and play a 4-5-1.
-
the commentator and trevor francis keep going on about how "packed "villa park is and the "huge crowd" but there must be at least 7k empty seats
-
I had totally forgotten Weimann was on the pitch.
We need to change pretty much everything during the break, because this isn't acceptable.
-
Lambert has made a huge custard in not buying that special midfielder and buying bloody Libor
I saw a bit of that saturday thing on sky round my mates
Why do villa struggle at home? he asked the panel
Every one of them said no guile , they need that creator in midfield , the No 10
well at least they worked it out and they only watch us on MOTD ;(
-
As with Spurs on Wednesday, people will say the opposition is just too good, and that's true. But whoever we're playing, we should be able to string two passes together and present some sort of goal threat, occasionally.
That side has been sent out for 90 minutes of possession-yielding, backs-to-the-wall, last ditch defending. We wouldn't have let TSM get away with it, and I don't see why Lambert should either.
-

Tonev was dire on Tuesday he'll offer us nothing.
-
If we're without those two up front for long periods we are going to badly struggle again this year.
Agree with the McLeish comparisons. Identical.
-
The thing is it hasn't worked at home because we've played counter attack tactics, we've changed that now and gone ultra defensive with no counter attacking options. This is utter garbage, we have to give it a go. Take off Baker and bring on a midfielder and just give it a go. We have to get into the midfield and get forward.
-
Bending over like a bunch of fucking cowards.
-
Put Clark in front of the back four , play a midfield diamond with KEA in the forward position.
-
I had totally forgotten Weimann was on the pitch.
We need to change pretty much everything during the break, because this isn't acceptable.
Yep.
-
Albrighton for a centre back seems the obvious change to me. But to be honest, the only way we've kept the scoreline down is by packing our penalty area and flailing it away.
-
Lambert is supposed to be an attacking manager, so fucking attack.
-

Agree entirely.
Man City are a quality side, but too often we'll limply give the ball away when not under any pressure. Our one single attacking option is hitting it long to Kozak. Kompany will cope with that all day long.
I am pretty shocked at the way we've been set up, it is bringing back horrible memories of McLeish.
I support Lambert and haven't felt the need to give him stick yet, but honestly, sending us out like that is going to get the majority of fans on his back very quickly indeed.
-
Absolute garbage first half. Even if it'd been 0-0 what could anyone claim was good about that ?
No football, no pattern of play, just hoof it up and lose possession. No width, no pace, no invention, NOTHING.
Another 45 minutes at VP without even a sniff of a shot on target.
As one sided a 1-0 half as you'll ever see
-
I had totally forgotten Weimann was on the pitch.
We need to change pretty much everything during the break, because this isn't acceptable.
Sadly looking like the norm, 10 defeats in 14 home games will be a statistic to be ashamed of along with one clean sheet in 28. :(
-
like someone said earlier , If we get beat 5-0 and have a go , I dont mind that .
but this is TSM football
-
This waving the white flag and playing for whatever we can get at home has been woven into the fabric of this club for a while now. I think it's one of those gypsy curses that even a supposedly attaking manager like Lambert cannot break. We need the White Wizard and an attacking midfielder at the very least.
-
Lambert has made a huge custard in not buying that special midfielder and buying bloody Libor

I don't get it, we have one of the best forwards we'll ever have and he's crying out for a tidy little No.10 player. Lambert must know this but it's too late because im 100% sure Christian won't be a Villa player next August.
-
What's happened to Gary Gardner? at least he's got some drive about him.
-

Especially agree on the Kompany point. How the hell do we expect to get the better of one of the best centre backs in the world by giving him the most basic, ABC attacking play to deal with? He could handle this while working on a sudoku at the same time.
-
Playing a vastly superior side but we have been utterly shite from 1-11. Watching Guzan throw in that goal brought him down to the level of the rest of them. Worrying for Lambert is that a lot of these players are his signings. They are painfully inept technically.
The options on the bench say it all too.
Maybe this is the reality of modern day club football in England but there is something depressing seeing Aston Villa being utterly humiliatated at home to Man City. They are in a different stratosphere to us. We look a championship side without Gabby and Benteke to be honest
-

even Stoke City were better than Man City , you just need to have a go

What's happened to Gary Gardner? at least he's got some drive about him.
Long term back injury apparently.
-
Weimann, shit i'd actually forget he was playing
-

So out of character....
-

It's hardly an aspersion on someone's character to be unfortunate with injuries, don't you think?
-
Weimann, shit i'd actually forget he was playing
Not his fault it's the team set up. It's a complete shambles and not acceptable.
-
The signings in the summer have not been good enough up to now
and before someone jumps on me
I dont mean the injured Okore . I was expecting them to be better than what we already had im not so sure
-

As soon as I'd typed it.
Just fed up!
-
I fear Lambert is starting to make some poor decisions in his Villa career now. Signings, tatics, coaching...none of it fills me with confidence. I fear another season like the last 2....and that might possibly signal the end of him.
-
I do worry about the post Benteke era of our club.

Apologies, Rig. When I'm sad I use pedantry as a defense mechanism. And Villa today are making me pretty sad.
-

I dont mean the injured Okore . I was expecting them to be better than what we already had im not so sure
Yeah that's my thinking, we really needed players to come into the starting 11 and other than Okore, I haven't seen that anyone of them is a big improvement on what we have.
-
Too many of these players are underwhelming, technically.
It's all well and good pointing at Benteke as a signing which has worked out excellently, but how many of the other cheap signings we made have worked out particularly well?
This summer we needed to realise we'd come pretty close to going down, and do something about that by buying players from a level better than those we had got used to having.
We didn't, though, we just bought more of the same. I can't see how repeatedly picking up cheap players is ever going to improve us sufficiently to move things on as much as they need to be moved on.
He was unlucky to lose Okore to imjury for the season, but this lack of guile thing was our number one problem last season, and it doesn't look to me like we've done anything to try to improve it.
-
It's ok building for the future but you have to keep an eye on the now...

that is bad . Blimey . Not good enough
-
if our performance were a band it'd be Shed Seven. No make that Kajagoogoo
-
'I dont expect Aston Villa fans to wait for 40 minutes before having a shot at goal.' No we wait longer.
My favourite Paul Lambert quote.

IS that statistic including the next 2 home games?
-
This is worse than the spurs performance. Lamberts tried to compensate for our injuries and the superior opposition but it hasn't worked at all. Probably won't get anything back now but we have to give it a go, I'd take Clark off and put Tonev or Albrighton on, push Weimann up with Kozak. Think we have more to lose by not going for it than the goal difference.
-

hey play Libor on the wing , could be our new Ormandroyd ;)

I agree and I've said on other threads we badly need to add players who are noticeably better. I don't see what we're going to do to change this.
-
It's ok building for the future but you have to keep an eye on the now...
And it's hardly like the future looks all that amazing, either.
-
fook me!
-
Defeat will be our worst start at home in 67 years - another unwanted stat :(
-
Fucking hell Baker's clumsy.
-
You could plough the space between our midfield and attack.
-

That's what I meant by keeping an eye on NOW. We should have bought sone experienced quality when we had the chance. That would give time for the rest of the side to develop and ensure we get them used to playing decent football.
-
Defeat will be our worst start at home in 67 years - another unwanted stat :(
To be fair, it's probably our worst opening fixture run ever.
-
The team lacks experience and every player he's bought has not played in the premiership before - it shows.
-
Defeat will be our worst start at home in 67 years - another unwanted stat :(
Spurs and Everton next...could be a long held record
-
Looks like nothing has changed.
-
no change again ffs
least we have Bowery ;O
-
Defeat will be our worst start at home in 67 years - another unwanted stat :(
Yep, not lost 3 at home in a row since 1969. Record breaking team.
-
It's ok building for the future but you have to keep an eye on the now...

Based on this it's pretty fucking bleak.

Blimey. How many of these types of 'records' does Lambert have now?
-
Defeat will be our worst start at home in 67 years - another unwanted stat :(

Newcastle at home ? They have won twice away in the last year - and both times here :(
-

Not lost the first 3 at home since 1946.

Yeah, and I'm not defending how crap we've been, but if we'd played Newcastle-level teams every week then we probably wouldn't have lost all of them.
-
On the n°10 issue that some people have mentioned, Michael Owen wrote an intelligent article about that very subject recently - specifically on England, but talking about how the modern game revolves around that kind of player.
Link to Owen article (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/england/10307953/England-are-paying-the-price-for-not-having-any-creative-free-spirits-available-to-Roy-Hodgson.html)
-
no change again ffs
least we have Bowery ;O
I'd be astounded if Bowery ever makes it as a Premier League player.
-
fffuucckkkk mmmeeeeee
-
Jesus Christ, world's least likely equaliser.
-
Wow- never saw that coming in a million years :)
-
nice finish.
-
if you have a go VILLA
-
KARIM!!
-
Fuck me....
-
Hurray!
-
Get in you, beauty.
Finally something to shut up the moaning minnies on here.
-
See, when we pass the ball we're actually quite good. I think/hope Lambert's told them to stop lumping it, and it's worked (with some generosity from the linesman).
-
Weimann moves into space, good space sometimes...but we havent got a player who can pich a run out.
And as I speak we score....its a funny old game!
Looks a good camp with them all bonding by the bench.
You wouldnt think we're shit would you.
-
FFS I missed that.
-
hold on Villa
how long left;)
-
Where do we claim our £100?
good finish, probably slightly offside bu it's nice to get one of those in our favour.
-
Well look what happens when you try something traditional - attacking.
-
Get in you, beauty.
Finally something to shut up the moaning minnies on here.
Ha ha, coming from you, with your new "he's exactly like MON" motto.
-
YEAHHHH GET IN VILLA
-
Get the fucking fuck in.
-
Well look what happens when you try something traditional - attacking.
That was the first time in this match we had tried to do some attacking that didn't involve lumping it at Kozak and hoping for the best.
-
Lets show some spirit and fight and have a go from here - the fans will respond.
-
How many bet sheets just got screwed up ;)
-
Well there you go we passed it along the floor and scored, there's the fucking lesson.
-
just when I think I'm out, they pull me back in....
-
Well there you go we passed it along the floor and scored, there's the fucking lesson.
8)
-
They really miss Silva and Aguero don't they
-
defence ffs defence ffs
-
How fucking typical- concede from 2 corners:(
-
Get in you, beauty.
Finally something to shut up the moaning minnies on here.
Ha ha, coming from you, with your new "he's exactly like MON" motto.
Don't twist my words but reading your posts today I can tell panto season isn't far off.
BOLLOX!
-
Fucking hell two corners and two goals, three centre halves on the pitch absolutely unforgivable.
-
we are shite, that is my final assesment
-
you donkeys.
-
Similar to the newcastle game again .
-
Whats going on with corners....that line shape is bollocks, fucking bollocks!!
Are they coached that???????
-
Oh shit
-
Fucking corner again. AGAIN.
-
We actually looked to be getting better at defending corners I thought
-
Oh well, we've come back before, if they just keep their heads and pass it they can keep themselves in the game.
-
Why oh why oh why?
-
fucking helllllllllllllllllllllll, villa, defend properly
-
A corner you say?
-
Well that lasted.
-
so there was no one on the line ;(
-
Sack that bloody ex Arsenal player who's coaching here....
-
The most poignant thing this commentator may have ever said: "You're in trouble if you concede this many corners and if you defend them as badly as Villa have done."
Ain't that the truth.
-
City going for the kill now :(
-
Poor effort from Baker at defending that. He has been really poor today. Guzan stood on his line like a statue didn't help matters. Sylla booked just there has been woeful today
-
Fucking Smethwick beating Manure.
-
If Lambert say in his post match interview, "I thought we we're terrific" I'll take him out.
-
sylla and baker have been visiting the same barber-I wish they'd spend their time learning how to head, defend, run, pass etc etc...so frustrating
-
Make a change Lambert, we don't need three fucking centre halves.
-
Our marking is atrocious considering we have three central defenders.
-
Well they were.
-
Poor effort from Baker at defending that. He has been really poor today. Guzan stood on his line like a statue didn't help matters. Sylla booked just there has been woeful today
It's because Baker isn't very good, and occasional lunge tackles don't change that.
-
If Lambert say in his post match interview, "I thought we we're terrific" I'll take him out.
Or "people have to be realistic if they think we can get something from a team like Man City"......
-
Poor effort from Baker at defending that. He has been really poor today. Guzan stood on his line like a statue didn't help matters. Sylla booked just there has been woeful today
I'm a fan of sylla but he has been very poor here.
-
get fucked up the tail pipe
-
Back to normal
-
On the bright side, my accumulator today is Hull, Southampton and Man City to win, Spurs to draw. Looking good.
-
Delph and Weimann need to show alot more...they're decent players, but come on, jesus christ Villa, give us something to shout about!
-
Fucking atrocious pass from Clark, our players don't have a clue.
-
If Lambert say in his post match interview, "I thought we we're terrific" I'll take him out.
Or "people have to be realistic if they think we can get something from a team like Man City"......
In fact I don't want to hear anything from him, I want him to send that Marshall coach bloke out so he can explain the marking on corners.
-
We looked pretty good there, until we hoofed it into touch like we'd had a total lobotomy.
-
Done for now, Vlaar is just hoofing it. Fucking hopefless.
-
Here comes the hoofing now, you can always tell we're fucked once that begins.
-
Make a change Lambert.
-
Oh yay. Navas.
-
This is such a sad thing to watch. It's the inevitability that's so painful.
-
it is very mcleish esque, though. Kozak-dreadful footballer, 7 million? Where is Lowton? Why does Baker look so poor? Vlaar is a Dutch international..I don't know how. I hate to slate the players, but I expect more from them.
-
Aston Villa FC @AVFCOfficial 1m
#AVFC 1-2 #MCFC - 62mins: Villa showing plenty of passion in this one. Not over by any stretch. #AVFCLIVE
-
We should have been dead and buried long ago on this game - the result looks much better than the performance.
-
Reminds me a little of last year...all the new players coming took quite a long time to gel. By Feb/Mar time we looked ok.
I think we might have to wait a while for results....if they ever come.
-
The midfield needs to move, I don't understand how fucking stupid they are. The one time we tried it we scored.
-
Delph and Weimann need to show alot more...they're decent players, but come on, jesus christ Villa, give us something to shout about!
Think Delph has played well second half
-
Guzan hoofs away possession as well.
-
Delph and Weimann need to show alot more...they're decent players, but come on, jesus christ Villa, give us something to shout about!
Think Delph has played well second half
Kea for me has been our best player today .
-
Delph and Weimann need to show alot more...they're decent players, but come on, jesus christ Villa, give us something to shout about!
Think Delph has played well second half
He's going to get little credit, but KEA has been our best midfielder today.
-
Guzan is our most creative player.
-
Watching Vlaar's positional sense the man does so well to open up spaces for the opposition.
-
half chance there
will someone please ask Lambert after the game - why is the defence so shite
-
Watching Vlaar's positional sense the man does so well to open up spaces for the opposition.
The way he'll open up spaces by running into the wrong position is certainly an art.
-
I'd give Bennett a chance infront of Luna, he hasn't warranted keeping his place.
-
Kozak isn't looking ready for this, and we'll get nowhere with an aerial approach. I'd bring him and Baker off for Tonev and Albrighton, go 4-3-3 and have a go along the ground with pace.
-
Any changes? we are losing Lambert.
-
If you were Lambert, what changes would you make? I'd go 4,3,3, taking Baker, Kozak and Sylla off. Lowton, Tonev and Helenius on.
It's sad to see how much better Manchester City and Spurs are than us....sad
Come on Villa!!! fuck me, that 4-2 victory in 2008 seems a long long long time ago...yet only 5 years
-
Can we bring Jovetic on? And maybe Lescott for Vlaar?
-
Do you know what? Fuck it. This is a team that wants to win the CL. It could be worse.
-
This Pellegrini is an idiot! A winger! Who uses wingers these days!?
*sulks*
-
given away again oh dear
-
Baggies leading
-
Delph desperate for someone to pass to then.
-

It happens when you have 100's of millions of £'s to spend compared to 10's of millions.
-
Awful Sylla first of all you ran away from the ball when Delph wanted to pass then we you came back you gave it away.
-
Do you know what? Fuck it. This is a team that wants to win the CL. It could be worse.
It isn't that that people are unhappy about, though. It's the lack of attacking intent and the complete inability to keep the ball for more than 2 or 3 passes without playing a hopeful 50/50 pass, or lumping it up for Kozak.
I don't get it. The one time we stopped doing that and tried to keep the ball and attack that way, we scored.
-
Double change - better late than never .
-
Bloody great from Weimann that.
-
first run by andi
freekick villa
-
Delph just collected the ball from Clark from about three yards away. He had it for about ten seconds. First he went one way looking for someone to pass to. Then he went the other. Eventually he went for a hopeful ball to Sylla, who promptly gave it away.
Just about sums us up.
-
well done Andi! come on Villa
-
Albrighton and Prez coming on.
-
Good from Andi, dropped deep and gave an option.
-
We're 1 goal away from being level on points with Man United. Let's be positive.
-
Have we got a free kick taker on the pitch
-
This is ideal for Vlaar to smash one.
-
Fuck me...
-
Albrighton and Tonev coming on.
-
gggoooaaallllllllllllllllllllllllll
-
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT
-
Unbeleivable, we have :)
-
Yesssssss - what a goal!!!
-
FUCK ME WHAT A FREE KICK!
-
our new beckham ;)
-
Holy shit!!!!!
-
What a free kick! And once again it came from playing on the deck, fucking learn Villa.
-

Come on Villa!!! fuck me, that 4-2 victory in 2008 seems a long long long time ago...yet only 5 years
It happens when you have 100's of millions of £'s to spend compared to 10's of millions.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs

I had actually forgotten that it was possible, ie within the laws of the game, to score directly from a free kick.

-
The fuck?
-
Stunned, didn't see this coming.

I now go from thinking I'd be turning off at this point with us about 4-0 down to watching every minute pass on the front of my radio...good old Villa. This is what we are
-
We'll still get beat !
You dirty scoundrel :(
-
The world will end after 4:45pm....
-
Not Bowery.
-
Errrrrr emmmmmmm surely we can't hold to this can we?
-
We must have slipped through a wormhole in space into some parallel universe.
Time for a beer.
-
fuck off ref he cant run off
-
Bowery for Weimann, I don't like that idea much.
-
I'd have brought on Tonev, not Bowery. The pace will be missed.
-
Oh god, I don't think I can watch the rest of this.
Cheer up, fella. ;)
-
my ass is sweating
-
Wow. Now praying that our defenders take 15 off from being shite.
-
We'll still get beat !
Only about 5-3 though now which is better than I expected ;-)
-
Did Tonev and albrighton come on?
I've been jumping around.
-
C'mon Bowery, I know nothing, Lambert rules!
-
Sterling "Birmingham 2, Manchester 0" The stripies will love that
-
I would snatch your arm of if offered a point from this position...
-
I'm going to hide.
-
We'll still get beat !
Only about 5-3 though now which is better than I expected ;-)
And they've done what we wanted them to do after that horrible first half: they've played football the right way and given it a bloody good go.
-
Clench.
-
come on Villa
-
These next 10 minutes could have a huge influence on our season - win here and it will be immense!
-
this would be massive for us
-
There's no way I'm going to get through the next ten minutes without a defibrillator.
-
did these be yanited 4-1 ;)
-
About 3 radios on in our house plus Final Score plus on here constantly.......days like this when I love football!
Beats the old teletext
-
Stop saying how good it will be to win here, you will all jinx it... we will lose, we will lose... do not jinx it!

They're over now, been cutting back my clematis and checking my tyre pressures. Window cleaner here, Pompey fan, not a happy man
-
Come on Villa. Hold on!
-
So odd. We're beating man City 3-2 and I still wouldn't rate any of our players over a six out of ten.
Unless they hod on to this, in which case they all get ten.
-
talk about biscuits or beer or anything but Villa
-
hold on Villa
we will be first on MOTD
-
I hope Lambert has the decency to change into his Burglar Bill outfit for the post match interviews.
-
Squeaky bum time...
-
We will lose
-
Why can we see empty seats behind Le Tissier - it isnt as if we are 5-1 up.
-
We are dropping very deep here - need to hang on .

I had a lovely M and S ginger chocolate one earlier. A nice pear cider later in the bath if we hold on here before cooking my wife's birthday meal
-
What odds on us actually winning this 3-2 after half time?
-
The longest five minutes of our lives....

Gardening sounds so dodgy.

Just shows what can happen if we have a go at teams rather than sitting back and letting them attack.
-
They were empty to begin with.
We will lose, we will lose
-
missing the pace now

Can't remember many stoppages.

I feel sick with nerves. Properly sick.

I hope Lambert has the decency to change into his Burglar Bill outfit for the post match interviews.
Last Saturday at Norwich was daylight robbery, too, because they could not take their many chances. Happy to see Lambo interviewed in an eye mask all season if this keeps up.

*I won't really.
.
Ridic post and comment and now looks even more ridic. Out of all the negative and non insightful posts this was worst ..
-
Great thread. Reading that was just like being at the match with all its highs and lows.
-
I was proud to say that I was one of the 25 that predicted a win. Insightful? No, just blind optimism. I had the journey from hell to get there thanks to huge queues on various sections of motorways, closed roads, truck fires, etc, all the time thinking "Is this a sign not to go". But got there I did to watch a spirited first half, backs to the wall defence. And the second half a team that just didnt show any fear against a hugely expensive, and it has to be said a very good team. I dont think we beat a great team playing badly, I think we did it on our own. I did notice that Bacuna had really got under Nasri's skin. Their best player, and yellow carded because of a lash out, and subsequnetly withdrawn to save himself. (I did notice him kick Bacuna in the arse later on). And Bacuna was just brilliant. Man of the match, but I thought the team as a whole were terrific. My favourite match in five years of being an ST holder. Buzzing all the way home. Bacuna Matata!
