What a bastard Lambert is. Play injured players man.

He is deliberately throwing home games in the league now.

No Westwood nor Gabby nor Benteke - our key players in 2013. Looks like 5-3-2. Lambo seems like a 'change is better than progress' type. In corporate life, they get job promotions but leave mess in their wake.

I think we'll struggle badly as we don't have any attacking outlet really. However come on Villa try and win. We need to Gabby and Benteke back asap.

Well, it worked at first - winning away to Liverpool and we looked quite solid that day. Once teams knew what our shape was going to be though, that's when it fell apart.

It almost certainly is but I don't think having the flexibility to use different systems depending on the opponent and their tactics is a bad thing.

Good formation for me (or at least as good as we could go given the injuries), I think packing the midfield with, in effect, 5 players is the way to go against City. Watch me eat my words after about 10 minutes though!!

so there's no chance it's 442 with Luna in front of baker on the left?

Given how far forward their fullbacks get I could see the advantage of playing that way, if Weimann is happy to sit a bit deeper and make an extra man in midfield when we're defending.

not this close to kick off. I tend to predict us losing games like this about 4-0 a few days in advance and then suddenly think we can win it just before the start. That feeling usually lasts about 5 minutes...particularly this season

Can't agree with you in all the games I've seen this year...apart from the Arsenal and Norwich game we didn't tend to do it much....the others I watched live and that's all we did, others would agree.

We're looking every inch a long ball side today.

I think today is a slightly exceptional circumstance.

Almost every game has been a slightly exceptional circumstance. Watch Southampton or Swansea against the big sides - they can still keep the ball.

Therefore as I have said before, when we play well we don't go long.

It's just long balls which are a problem though. We're not negative like Allardyce's sides, nor nihilistically thuggish like Wimbledon or Pulis' Stoke. We just unnecessarily give the ball away by going long, which is frustrating and undoubtedly stupid.

The centre backs aren't the problem really, are they. We struggle so much to stop balls getting delivered into the danger area, it's no wonder they end up conceding. We suck at defending the flanks.

This is what it has been like at home for fucking years now, though, an inability to hold on to the ball without whacking it up field (this side, today, for example) or without relying on endless crosses into the box (MON's side).

No wonder our crowds are dodgy. If I think back to, say, the start of the MON era, I can genuinely think of about a dozen enjoyable home matches, tops.

I can think of hundreds of totally unsatisfactory ones, though. Not ones that we lost, necessarily, but poor matches.

I can understand playing defensively in this fixture. Yes, it's at home, but they're an excellent side, so from that point of view, it is understandable.

I would have thought, though, that when playing a side full of top quality players, it is of some importance to minimise the frequency with which you give them the ball.

We don't seem to be doing that. Too often we panic in possession and play what are, at best, 50-50 balls, and invariable give possession straight back to them.

Our only outlet seems to be the ball up to Kozak.

Don't mean to start a row, but if Lambert was relying on hoofball to keep us up in his second season we'd be fucked, he would fail and be sacked and yet another project would begin.

We are defending well today and that's something to be pleased about.  But we have zero idea going forward.  I can't get too cross though as most sides would miss Benteke and we miss Gabby.

It just seems a strange game in which to change the formation. Normally, we should be more attacking at home, I agree, but today is one of the days where we might have been able to make our counter attacking work; City aren't likely to sit back and play out a draw. 4-5-1, with Sylla in his more effective defensive role in front of the defence, Delph and El Ahmadi in the middle, Kojak up front and Weimann and Helenius/Tonev out wide.

Shockingly negative set up. Take a centre half off and put something into midfield or attack we have to actually create something. If you sit back you get beat, it's as simple as that.

The McLeish thing is true, though, it's indistinguishable.

No attacking intent whatsoever. I appreciate they're a good side, but have a fucking go, FFS.

We are nowhere near good enough defensively to soak up pressure like that against even the poorer sides, so why does he think it'll work against this lot?

No attacking intent at all, nothing.

KEA is the only midfielder who's played football today. The other two have barely touched the ball, as all six defenders (including the keeper) have launched it straight to Kompany whenever the ball's got near them, as if it's a handgrenade one pin short.

We really need to go for this. It's utterly pathetic. Kovak is struggling up on his own. No support, no service. Wiemann's poor.

I'd bring on Albrighton and Tonev to give us a bit of pace and width. There's really no point having 3 CH's today. Our CM is poor. Delph is typically energetic, but KEA is far too cumbersome, and none of our midfield have much in the way of ball control or incisive passing.

Take off KEA or Sylla, and Baker. Bring on two wingers and play Wiemann off Kozak. Or keep the mids, take off Andi and play a 4-5-1.

As with Spurs on Wednesday, people will say the opposition is just too good, and that's true. But whoever we're playing, we should be able to string two passes together and present some sort of goal threat, occasionally.

That side has been sent out for 90 minutes of possession-yielding, backs-to-the-wall, last ditch defending. We wouldn't have let TSM get away with it, and I don't see why Lambert should either.

The thing is it hasn't worked at home because we've played counter attack tactics, we've changed that now and gone ultra defensive with no counter attacking options. This is utter garbage, we have to give it a go. Take off Baker and bring on a midfielder and just give it a go. We have to get into the midfield and get forward.

Man City are a quality side, but too often we'll limply give the ball away when not under any pressure. Our one single attacking option is hitting it long to Kozak. Kompany will cope with that all day long.

I am pretty shocked at the way we've been set up, it is bringing back horrible memories of McLeish.

I support Lambert and haven't felt the need to give him stick yet, but honestly, sending us out like that is going to get the majority of fans on his back very quickly indeed.

No football, no pattern of play, just hoof it up and lose possession. No width, no pace, no invention, NOTHING.

As one sided a 1-0 half as you'll ever see

This waving the white flag and playing for whatever we can get at home has been woven into the fabric of this club for a while now.  I think it's one of those gypsy curses that even a supposedly attaking manager like Lambert cannot break. Playing a vastly superior side but we have been utterly shite from 1-11. Watching Guzan throw in that goal brought him down to the level of the rest of them. Worrying for Lambert is that a lot of these players are his signings. They are painfully inept technically.
The options on the bench say it all too.

Maybe this is the reality of modern day club football in England but there is something depressing seeing Aston Villa being utterly humiliatated at home to Man City. They are in a different stratosphere to us. We look a championship side without Gabby and Benteke to be honest

Too many of these players are underwhelming, technically.

It's all well and good pointing at Benteke as a signing which has worked out excellently, but how many of the other cheap signings we made have worked out particularly well?

This summer we needed to realise we'd come pretty close to going down, and do something about that by buying players from a level better than those we had got used to having.

We didn't, though, we just bought more of the same. I can't see how repeatedly picking up cheap players is ever going to improve us sufficiently to move things on as much as they need to be moved on.

He was unlucky to lose Okore to imjury for the season, but this lack of guile thing was our number one problem last season, and it doesn't look to me like we've done anything to try to improve it.

This is worse than the spurs performance. Lamberts tried to compensate for our injuries and the superior opposition but it hasn't worked at all. Probably won't get anything back now but we have to give it a go, I'd take Clark off and put Tonev or Albrighton on, push Weimann up with Kozak. Think we have more to lose by not going for it than the goal difference.

See, when we pass the ball we're actually quite good. I think/hope Lambert's told them to stop lumping it, and it's worked (with some generosity from the linesman).

Weimann moves into space, good space sometimes...but we havent got a player who can pich a run out.

And as I speak we score....its a funny old game!

Looks a good camp with them all bonding by the bench.

Do you know what? Fuck it. This is a team that wants to win the CL. It could be worse.

It isn't that that people are unhappy about, though. It's the lack of attacking intent and the complete inability to keep the ball for more than 2 or 3 passes without playing a hopeful 50/50 pass, or lumping it up for Kozak.

I don't get it. The one time we stopped doing that and tried to keep the ball and attack that way, we scored.

Delph just collected the ball from Clark from about three yards away. He had it for about ten seconds. First he went one way looking for someone to pass to. Then he went the other. Eventually he went for a hopeful ball to Sylla, who promptly gave it away.

Great thread. Reading that was just like being at the match with all its highs and lows.

I was proud to say that I was one of the 25 that predicted a win.  Insightful?  No, just blind optimism.  I had the journey from hell to get there thanks to huge queues on various sections of motorways, closed roads, truck fires, etc, all the time thinking "Is this a sign not to go".  But got there I did to watch a spirited first half, backs to the wall defence.  And the second half a team that just didnt show any fear against a hugely expensive, and it has to be said a very good team.  I dont think we beat a great team playing badly, I think we did it on our own.  I did notice that Bacuna had really got under Nasri's skin.  Their best player, and yellow carded because of a lash out, and subsequnetly withdrawn to save himself.  (I did notice him kick Bacuna in the arse later on).  And Bacuna was just brilliant.  Man of the match, but I thought the team as a whole were terrific.  My favourite match in five years of being an ST holder.  Buzzing all the way home.  Bacuna Matata!
