entertaining.
-
a draw was fair
-
Thank goodness there was nothing on it.
-
End of season stuff. Not a bad match.
-
Glad that is over with looking forward to no football for the next few months.
-
Not bad for meaningless, last-day fare. Great to see Bent score, and what a cracker from Vlaar. Very happy to see Lambert run to the fans at the end. And nobody sings "We'll meet again" like Villa fans. Bring on next season.
-
Well we stayed up,played shite today, drew 2-2 and im in the sun in majorca!Cant wait till next season already!utv
-
Summed up our season really, absolutely atrocious defending. However we survived thank goodness, and I just hope that the defence is addressed in the summer as it badly needs to be.
-
Entertaining. Lots of work to do for next season though. Weimann looked poor (oddly).
Vlaar great goal but dodgy in the back. Bent, anonymous after 20 mins.
Bennett or Delph prolly my MOM.
-
I think it highlighted good and bad of our side, and showed why a couple of midfielders pushing Delph and Westwood, a forward etc. Dawkins, not really good enough etc.
Draw... get on with planning for next season.
Bent does not really help the forward line in the Benteke role, as nice as it was to see him score.
Worse teams than Wigan have survived.
-
Not a bad game. Open, some nice footy from both teams. I thought that we lost a lot of territory when Dawkins came on. He wasn't brilliant, and we missed Syllas presence.
Dunno how Wiemann lasted the game. He was total bobbins today. He's really needed a rest in the last few weeks to be honest.
Dawkins I think has played his last game now. Can't see Lambo wanting to make the move permanent. Not good enough. Bowery was ineffective when he came on. Again, we need to see him playing up front, not out wide.
Bent showed what he's good at, but also just why he cannot play for our side under Lambert. Barely touched it after 5 minutes. Cracking goal. A nice send off, but he's gone now.
Defensively dire as normal. We need 2 decent centre backs now and a strong left back to push Bennett, or to take his place. I don't rate Vlaar defensively. The odd cracking goal aside, he's not nearly as dominating at the back as we need. We need an organiser in there to keep the young lads from dropping so many clangers and falling asleep.
Baker is shit. Sorry, but it's the truth. He's not good enough.
Long, hard season. Thank christ it's over. Plenty of promise. Plenty of nice football has been played this year. We just need to sort the defence out.
I think it's quite clear now too, that Lambert probably doesn't rate most of the senior players he inherited when he got here. Ireland, Hutts, Given, Holman (has fallen out of favour now), Bent and possibly Bannan may move on in the next couple of windows. I also think Charlie Zog might have played his last game for us. I think Lamberts given him chances and hasn't seen enough. That, I would agree with.
Feel a little sorry for Wigan. They have some good players, play some nice stuff. They deserved to stay up more so than a few other clubs, particularly the North East mob and Stoke. I think we're crying out for a Maloney type player. Nice touches, good vision. Always looking to make something happen and consistently good set piece delivery.
I think Westy is great but his set pieces need to improve dramatically. We have no one who consistently delivers good free kicks and corners. Haven't had since Barry and Young.

Yes we badly need midfield competition and wide competition as well as the defensive issues.
-
if we had won we would have gone up to 13th
-
Glad we didn't lose. Thank god it's all over. Now we need Lambert and Lerner to sort out the defence and give us a team that isn't in a perennial relegation battle.

We won't struggle next season brother, just sit back and enjoy it.
-
if we had won we would have gone up to 13th
Yeah, and if we`d learnt what a clean sheet means, we`d have been a lot higher than that.
-
Good, entertaining game with a fair result at the end of it.
Glad this dog of a season is over with. The last couple of months were promising, but before that was dire in the extreme.
Big clearout coming up this summer I imagine.
Bish
-
What happened to the match thread - left after a while and hoped to follow what I had missed? Was it 2-2 then?
-
What happened to the match thread? It's disappeared.
-
We're certainly not boring going forward, but next ason I want us to be boring in defence and have a few 0's next to the opposition name. It's been great at times, bizarre at times and dreadful at times. But there are very good times ahead I'm convinced of that. Here's to a great summer, some duds departing and good players coming in. Best wishes everyone.
-
Finished 15th above to two North East clubs.
Glad we didn't lose and looking forward to next season already but we need to strengthen the defence as priority.
Well done D Bent for scoring in your final game for us.
-
This season not good enough again!
We have to start well next season that's for sure.
-
We were pretty poor for a lot of the game today.
We missed Benteke, not just for his goal threat but for his all round play and fantastic ability to hold the ball up and bring others into the game. He really is the focal point of this team.
I'm looking forward to a big clear out of those who are obviously not good enough for us to progress.
I trust Lambert to spend wisely.
-
Baker is not shit.
-
A disappointing performance but credit to Wigan who kept at it and looked the stronger team.
We need at least one brilliant central defender as neither Vlaar or Baker dominate central defence.
At least we didn't lose but after all the games Wigan have played recently, we realy should have punished them.
-
For the third last day if the season in a row, thank fuck that's over. Now Wigan are gone, it's not unlikely everyone will start pointing out our perennial struggles and late season escapes.
It's obvious to every fan where our deficencies lie, so if Lambert takes action i think we'll be comfortable next season. If he keeps faith in what we have, this time next year we may be reminiscing about today.
-
Thought it would be 2-2, both teams can score but are comical in defence.
We know the areas that need strengthening so hopefully a few defenders and midfielders signed this summer (cue Lambert being linked with a hundred strikers when Bent leaves).
-
Baker is not shit.
Maybe so, but he's not good enough for where we want to be.
-
They looked fresher than us by the end. Weimann has been poor, save for Sunderland, for a while and we need genuine options to take him, Gabby and Benteke out.
I think Baker and Clark should be 3rd choice with a centre half coming in, but I think if one does it will be from abroad. Maybe a german as a parting gift from Henke, or maybe Dunne will prove his fitness over the summer.
-
Fair result - an eventful season i think we can say , onwards and upwards!
-
Thats it for another year, I have watched all season on a dodgy stream but if any Villa fan subscribes to Sky next season hang your heads in shame, spunked themselves over Fergie, Beckham, Carragher and even played 20 games in 20 years the Newcastle goalie Harper about retiring and did not once repeat did not once mention Petrov, they are a fucking disgrace
-
I wonder why Lambert didn't bring KEA on? We've got to see more from him and we need some quality to push the first choice midfield 3. I dunno whether Dawkins appearance was merely some kind of gesture from PL. We really missed Sylla's presence in CM when he came off. I think as well, much like when Zoggy plays and we switch to more of a 4-2-3-1 (that often looks more 4-2-4), we looked poorer when SD was on.
Central defence is the biggest issue, but hopefully we'll address the serious lack of options on our bench too.
-
It's over and I won't miss it. Optimistic about the summer and look forward to see who we get in. Could be interesting as if I scribbled down a list of our current squad, I wouldn't be sad to see the back of twelve of them. Unlikely to be that much change this summer but it's a measure of how far we need to go
-
What happened to the match thread? Centre half needed asap!

True, but I guess a player's career ending due to leukemia just isn't interesting enough for Sky Sports...
-
The match thread is in Match Threads and Player Ratings, where all these threads get moved to.

I am a hell of alot more optimistic about our future than I was 12 months ago.

Well it is now, anyway. I'm such an idiot. Sorry.

They showed plenty of respect last week and I have heard him mentioned this week.
-
Last game of the sesaon was today Bully, this is when his retirement comes into effect, when they are spawning over those mentioned and he does not get a mention it makes my piss boil, wankers all of them
-

In effect, you could say Petrov's farewell was last week, at a home game with him on the pitch. Slight difference is that all the other retirements today were players that were on the pitch. I'd hope we wouldn't search for things to be offended by.
-

So - are you watching Sky on a stream then?
-
Well said Bully.
-
Lots of work to be done. Why can we not effing defend?

Good, entertaining game with a fair result at the end of it.

The obvious candidates for that speak for themselves, but its additions we need as much as any clear out.
-
I am a hell of alot more optimistic about our future than I was 12 months ago.
This.
We now have young players with premiership experience to build upon.
Still a lot of work required, but laying some solid foundations for the future.
-
Great to see Stan come out at the end with Lambert.
There were more flares today than at a 70's disco. I like the proper flares, but those smoke bombs dont half smell.
It had a real end of season feel about it; we always score and we always concede.
There were loads of Villa fans in the home ends, so much so that around 60-70 were ewcorted into the away end from the West Stand. A bit of argy bargy in the East. So reducing our allocation to stop trouble did the opposite. You've got to love the police.
-
Kinda reminds me of the last day in 2008: West Ham 2 Villa 2...Mellberg farewell t-shirts. Nice goals from Ash Young and Gareth Barry, Dean Ashton equalises in the last minute.
*
Ring of Fire is blaring out of a Chelsea pub in the street behind me.

@RonVlaar4: My worst game of the season, one good touch saved me! Thanks to the fans for the support this season, looking forward to the next one. #UTV
@Gards38: Buzzing to get back on the pitch! Thank you so much my friends family and fans this season use have helped me! Have a good summer! ⚽⚽⚽!!!

Just seen Vlaar's goal. What a strike!

I'll subscribe to what I want thanks.
Petrov was given the send of he deserved by the people who meant something to him. Don't need sky for that.
Not quite sure what you're trying to achieve by getting all wound up about something like that. Be glad he's alive and doing well. Be proud our team and fans have supported him in the way they have and keep the memory you have of waving and cheering him as he circled the pitch last week.
-

Jeff Stelling mentioned that one of the nice touches of the day was seeing Stan on the Villa bench with the coaching staff.
-
I can understand his anger at the Sky top 4 bias although I won't be hanging my head in shame for subscribing as its the only way I can watch more than 4 Villa games a season as I live away from Brum (currently in a USA airport with an 8 hour delay for fucks sake).
I hate Beckham

Feel your pain!!
-
Now that's over we can look forward to the coming and goings in the summer transfer window we need some quality players brought in then we can push on next season we don't want another relegation battle like this season.
-
And breathe.
-
Typical end of season nothing to play for fare. However well done to the never ending procession of bellends who come to our last away of the season, can't hold their drink and behave like a bunch of neanderthal morons. Anyway well done to Villa for conceding in the 19th minute applause rather than scoring and a great big farewell to Stan Petrov. See you all in August when hopefully we've strengthened and can start to move up the table.
-
We're in 2nd place at the moment.
-
If only we'll still be there come may 2014
-
Am I the first one back to Brum form Wigan? Was another quality awayday with the Villa.
-
As for the match, showed the best and worst of both sides really. Both played some lovely stuff, both were at times awful. A few of our players looked knackered towards the end.
Was quite amusing seeing the steady stream of Villa fans heading into our end after we scored. The flares were great, until some knobber lobbed one on the pitch. Still, 5 Villa goals and 4 points from my 2 aways, can't argue too much with that.
Thanks again to Leeg and Mr Sox. Top blokes and much appreciated.
-
Oh and quite like the new chant....
I don't care about Wigan
They don't care about me
All I care about
is AVFC
-
Didn't bother watching or listening to the game, I've felt relaxed about staying up since Sunderland and as it turned out we went past Wigan's final total that night. Although I did get sent a picture of Sid outside the Last Orders.
Our form has been decent over the final third of the season and we're only 5 points off 9th place. Keeping the significant players happy and a few additions of similar quality should see us easily top half next season and, with a little luck, perhaps even higher.
Enjoy the summer everyone.
-
All's well that ends well. Have a good summer everyone.

Paul Lambert paid Villa's vociferous support the ultimate compliment after the 2-2 draw with Wigan, insisting they had been a "major catalyst" in inspiring the players in their survival bid.
Lambert was once again quick to hail the fab fans who came in their numbers - 3,895 to be precise - to scream the team on at the DW Stadium.
Lambert said the number of fans in attendance and the noise they made from the stands was tremendous.
But he went a stage further, insisting that the camaraderie between fans and players and their support for the team in the tough games over the winter helped get the team over the line.
He said: "The fans have been brilliant. I'd like to thank them.
"They have been incredible for us, including through the hard festive period when they might have turned on the team.
"But they stuck with it.
"It's easy for a crowd to turn on you if you're not getting results.
"Being a young side it can have an adverse effect on them.
"But they never once got on our backs. They kept with it.
"I think they have been a major catalyst to the way we have been playing and performing.
"They can see what we are doing.
"The club is in a transitional period but the effort and performances over the last three, four, five months has been fantastic.
"We have been playing really well and we need to take that into next season.
"We want to keep progressing the football club with the philosophy of the way we're playing. We will keep driving it on."
Lambert accepted it's been a "really hard season" but said he's enjoyed it thoroughly.
He continued: "It's been really hard but I have loved it.
"It's been great pressure. It's a high-pressure job being manager of this football club with the size of it. But I have loved it.
"It's in a transitional period as I have said. But we have developed it. We have got better and better. I think it's there for everybody to see. The biggest yardstick is that crowd."
As for the game itself, Lambert said a draw was a fair result.
He added: "It was entertaining and really open. I thought it was a really good game.
"Full credit to the lads. We kept going and never gave up. A draw was probably a fair result.
"It was a great goal from Darren. You're replacing Benteke who has been in extraordinary form.
"But that's Darren all over. He's a goalscorer.
"Benteke has had one of those seasons where he's done nothing wrong. He's not been injured or suspended except today. He's scored at every turn.
"He's the highest scorer in 2013 other than Ronaldo and Messi so you can't drop someone who's playing like that.
"It's been hard for Darren. I am sure he will say the same.
"But I thought he played really well and he scored which everyone knows he's capable of doing.
"But it's not about one player for me. It's about the whole team and every one of them were excellent."
-
Baker is not shit.
I agree. What we clearly need is agood back-up for Benteke.Wecouln't get our usual attacking momentum going. still scored twice, though.
-

They mentioned petrov more than once and I will spend my money how I want thanks !
-
I've given the side lots of praise of late, and there's plenty of promise. But I just watched the highlights on ESPN goals and I have to say I'm not sure our defence has improved over the season at all. We won't avoid a repeat of this seasons struggles unless we improve both individually and as a unit. It's just complete bedlam back there half the time.
-
I finally got the result and score right.
-
pb, you weren't singing, 'No respect' at the screen, where you?
As for the Lambert comment, I think it shows that he was right, and probably honest over the dropping Bent 'issue' earlier in the season. Itss funny that the press dropped the Bent dropped story when Benteke started scoring.

I've got my Stan mask, much as I tried I couldn't persuade Mr Sox to wear his. Loads of cars on the way back had them in the windows, which was a tad surreal.

Great photos Chipsticks.

What was the song being sung by our fans ? never heard it before but sounded loud. Btw, i wasnt at the game, heard it on a stream.

Just watched the (extremely short) highlights on Match of the Day. Two more fantastic goals to add to the collection for this season!
-
Well done to MOTD for acknowledging the retirement of Stan
-
Not so well done to MOTD for not having 1 Villa goal in the contenders for goal of the season.
-
Not so well done to MOTD for not having 1 Villa goal in the contenders for goal of the season.
I am fucking fuming. They had a long-ball route 1 toepoke from Donkey Carroll. But nothing from Villa. Wankers
-
And an offside goal as the winner. Twats. Even allowing for obvious bias, the skill showed by Lowton, and indeed Vlaar today, for defenders was far better than the Carroll or Van Persie goals. They are strikers, they are meant to score decent goals and have some skill, defenders aren't. Bunch of fuck knuckles.
-
Its a meaningless contest on a highlights show presented by morons. Don't get so wound up, we already know our goals are the best, we don't need Alan fucking Hansen to confirm it.
-
Brilliant PWS.. I was on that side. Atmosphere as usual epic.
-
Strange game today. After all the intense "must win" games of the last few months it was weird to have a game that basically didn't matter. Thought we'd walk it after the early goal but in truth we played poorly. Fair play to Wigan for not charging much but that concourse is not big enough for a full, or nearly full stand. I guess they won't have that problem so much when the likes of Small Heath come to town. Anyway, UTV. 15th and 3 points more is progress of sorts. We go again.
-
Since there was nothing riding on it, I decided to watch MOTD without knowing the scores. I only have their highlights to go on but it looked like Wigan were the better team and had more chances. Our defensive problems were on show again. Was disappointed with Boyce's goal as I thought Bennett looked favorite for the ball at one point. Just wasn't strong enough I guess. Let's hope he and some others bulk up in the summer. Good goals though. Nice to see Bent get one and Vlaar's was class. Strangly enough, I already can't wait for next season...UTV!

Still bloody waiting
I'm still in the fucking airport!

What you haven't realised is the plane left 5 hours ago.
You just missed the call because you've been too preoccupied with the H&V forum

Seemed like an entertaining game but if lambert doesn't sort the defence in the summer we'll have another year of struggle to look forward to.
-
That silly second goal wil hopefully serve as a timely reminder, amongst the relief of survival we still have to recognise that the team needs major work over the summer.
-
Spent Saturday night in Blackpool. The place has'nt changed in 20 years but there were plenty of Villa there which was nice.
I thought it was a decent enough game. Two really well taken goals and we played some half decent stuff at times. Lambert made another couple of silly subs though. Sylla was having a great game but he took him off after an hour which was a bit strange. I'd have left Gabby on as well. I'd have probably brought N'Zogbia on instead of Bowery as well.
All in all, i think we've got a lot to look to look forward to. A Lescott type at the back would be good and if we can bring a few players in the same mould as the one's we've got now and get certain players on decent contracts, then it'll be better next season.

Had a great day but the lack of clean sheet is ridiculous. The defence really needs addressing in the Summer.Lambert will not be afforded the same amount of good will if we continue to be so abominable in defence next season.Oh and piss off Albion and Fergie
-
We seriously need 2 good centre backs.

The flare looked a pain in the arse
A smoke bomb was set off in the pub we were in before the game. Looked like a bunch of kids who did it. Clever though, the smoke detectors all went off in the pub and the staff had to stop serving for about 15 minutes.
-
Not so well done to MOTD for not having 1 Villa goal in the contenders for goal of the season.
I am fucking fuming. They had a long-ball route 1 toepoke from Donkey Carroll. But nothing from Villa. Wankers
In fairness Linekar did acknowledge that there were a lot of notable omissions being as it was simply a collection of their 'goal of the month' winners. At least Lowton's goal made it into their end of season highlights video package.
-
Yes - how crap is that. Goal of the season based upon the best goal per month rather than the best goals of the season. Shocking
-
Our worst performance for a couple of months, yet will still found it in ourselves to score two more excellent goals. We gave up the ball very easily and defended badly. For all the odd instances of good play only Guzan rated more than a 6.
Bent showed why we bought him and also why we are better off without him.
Oddly enough, that is probably the best Wigan side we have faced, certainly better than the likes of Sunderland and Stoke. And Smethwick.

I said to the people I was with yesterday that I can't make my mind up whether this rubbish hand-clappy type song makes me feel like we're at a ManU away game or a Girl Guides camp.

I quite liked the song, not overly enthused by it but people certainly enjoyed it. Glad smoke bombs got a mention as I thought about starting a thread a few weeks back getting peoples views too it. Quite a bit of a mixed reaction on Twitter and the people I spoke too.

I definitely don't get it in that case.
-
I'm with DeKuip on the "I don't care about Wigan" song. I thought it was shit and couldn't quite get why so many other people thought otherwise. Each to their own I suppose. Still had a cracking day out though.

I was in that pub. It takes a special kind of idiot to set off a smoke bomb in a confined space packed full of fans. I also noticed on my way out that some old photos of Wigan rugby league teams had been smashed. It's a shame a few twats are such an embarrassment, as the vast majority of Villa fans in there were noisy and drunk but well behaved. The staff in that pub were all decent as well. I did feel sorry for the young girl collecting glasses. She was so busy she looked like she was going to break down in tears at any moment.

Without doubt the most cringe-worthy and embarrassingly poor song to ever come from Our fans. Made ourselves sound like Walsall.

Clean sheets are overrated. You can overcome that with a good duvet and firm pillows!
-

It is what they have been doing for the last 30 odd years so why change it now? The only stupid points was picking a Bale goal for May without even looking at that days goals as an option. I thought Vlaar's goal was as good if not better then Bales last two, especially when the Ape is scoring exactly the same goal virtually every match, it stops being special.
-

Overcome or come over?
-
You guys worry way too much about BBC pundits opinions. They are crap, everyone in football knows they are crap. Ignore them. If you must watch MOTD (and I have no idea why since you are on the internet) then just turn the sound off. But again, just dont watch it, that "all lads together" shite as they sit on the couch and spout bollocks is some cringeworthy stuff.
-
There's a logical part of my mind (really) that says broadcasters are after amazing goals, so Lowton's, Weimann's, Gabby's and Benteke's are all on film, ready to re-cycle on 'best goals of the Premier League' - type programmes for years to come.
Then there's the MOTD highlights. Irrelevant.
-
Anyone know why it took so long for yesterday's attendance figure to appear? It was 23,001.
-
Well as a final performance we were pretty average and looked really tired. I actually think the flare on the pitch really worked against us as it broke the momentum , that was a good 5 minute delay albeit the ref only adds 3 on ?
Our defence is dire but they get little defensive help off the midfield . Summer signings needed, I'm not sure Vlaar is good enough, or Bennett . Dawkins and Bowery I don't see premier league players there.
Let's hope lambert can unearth some more gems .

Fair play to Ridgewell for wearing this for the Man United game.

blimey I bet that went down a storm like the 19th minutes applause did in Jan..........wxxxers.
Yes but fair play to him.

Fair play to him. Not sure he should have worn it as him and his mate practised their And & Dec impersonation though.
