  Weimann as an impact sub?

He does need a rest tbh, looks like going for a draw.

It's either Clark in midfield or three at the back. Also, how Weimann isn't in that team and Gabby and Zog are is utterly beyond me.

Edit: Weimann must be injured.

Midfield of Westwood and Delph. As opposed to bannan/delph or westwood/bannan.
oh dear.
Just shows we have no quality options at the club

Guzan, Lowton, Bennett, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, Westwood, Delph, N'Zog, Benteke, Gabby

I see this as either Clark, Delph, and Westwood midfield in a 4-3-3, or 4-4-2 with Zog and Bennett out wide.

Not that he has shown it, but he has been carrying on with the injury that kept him out of the Spurs game.

5 did us well with the games before Chelsea if it is that, and it also means Vlaar has some support when coming back from Injury. I wonder if he is looking at a 5-4-1

Looks like were going for a backs to the wall counter attacking approach tonight.

5 at the back with Delph and Westwood sat in front of them and a quick counter attack of Gabby, N'Zogbia and Benteke.

Essentialy it solves our problem of having a poor midfield, don't play with one, have 7 defenders and 3 attackers.
Title: Re: West Bromwich Albion v Aston Villa Match Thread

I hope Clark is in the midfield.

I mean I hope that, too, rather than me being in midfield.

Although, to be honest, I don't see how the midfield would be in any way weakened if I were.

Problem with Bennett is everyone has realised he's so shit he can just have the ball as he's guaranteed to give it away and we become even more outnumbered in midfield.

It's flexible.

Clark could play in a 3/5 at the back or in midfield. I think it makes us more solid and with Lowton and Bennett going forward it hopefully makes us stronger going the other way too.

Time will tell but I'd also say that having Vlaar back is worth an awful lot, he's a good captain.

I'm thinking a 1-2 win is coming.....

I really hoped we would go for a more solid looking 4-3-3 with Bannan, Westwood and Delph together in the centre, Benteke up front and Gabby and Weimann out wide. Andi must be ill or injured to not be in the 18 but I would have gone with Holman rather than N'Zogbia.

Having Ron back is huge.

That's the most frustrating thing of it all, the fact that the addition of two, maybe three, players in the right positions, who needn't cost a fortune, would improve this side beyond measure.

There is a decent amount "right" with this side but it is getting buried under youthful lack of confidence after recent results.

Either we spend the money and get in the players who will add to the side, and coax that ability out, or we're done for.

I can not believe Lerner can just sit by and watch that happen.

dont all teams do the damage down that side.

I have to say, the last couple of games N'Zogbia has at least looked like he might be bothered, which is a definite plus. Mostly shite he might have been, but if he CAN get back into that Wigan-form, then he will be a big help to us.

he looks ok at the mo and gabby does

Need to keep it going, no giving silly free kicks on the edge of the box ans keep pressing them. The Tesco Bags have been second best all the first half.
Clarke will no doubt kick their backsides at half time so Lambert needs to keep his men focused not to let them back into the game.

Defence has been much better, amazing what one experienced bloke can bring to the side.

This surprises and warms me. It's players like this that will potentially save our bacon. Perhaps it's playing as one of the 2 behind Benteke that liberates his talent. If so, long may it continue.

Deserved first half lead but we desperately need to sort our style of defending out.

The forwards need to start snapping at the heels and stop allowing the opposition to lift their heads to pick a long ball. And our full backs need to start treating crosses the way we treat shots. Get closer and block everything.

That said, Concrete Ron looks a calming influence already.

It's funny that in this horrible season, I've seen us score some of the best goals I've seen from a Villa side in years.

That's an excellent point.

I'm glad this is the last season have to endure Espn analysis and i dont mean coz we're leaving the premier league. Great effort and application so far. Shame lichaj hasnt a left foot and N'zogbia not always passing to team mates who are in beter positions but a heck of alot better and more involved with team play. I like our threat on the counter Gabby rite fronm get go has been lively and shows his passion. Benteke beast and seems to want to show up lukaku! That goal was super. More of the same please and  the next goals are  crucial!! UTV love it . Paul lambert certainly has gone for it  ;D

Front 3 have been awesome Benteke so strong and what a goal
N'zogbia blimey finally the 10 mil pound players has turned up.

Just need to keep it tight now they are vulnerable on the counter and lost best midfielder

Long way to go lads and lasses, I am still scared stiff we will cave in if they score, but excellent first half and should be at least one more goal better off. Didnt like the formation, but has worked a treat, N'Zogbia was bothering Yacob and the two lads in midfield have been excellent. Please god we can beat these wankers. Benteke has been amazing and that Jones at right back looks awful (not just facially). Vlaar has steadied things at the back

Thy are going to come at us, and this maybe the biggest test for Ron Vlaar of keeping everything together at the back. I feel so much more confident with him back there along with Guzan. We've looked outstanding on the break and Albion will be wary of that. We need to take our chances and we will get them.

Calming influence needed on here!!!!

Keep calm and we will prevail.

N'Zogbia a revelation, Gabby & the Beast causing all sorts of problems - BUT we aint winning enough of the long balls from Guzan when he kicks long thereby losing possession too quickly. Sort this out and we will be fine????

It's amazing to think what the world would look like had we held on at Swansea, taken early chances at Bradford and Benteke had not missed those relatively easy chances against Southampton. I know it's all if's and buts but it is such a fine, fine line between where we are and where we could have been.

He really, really needs both his eyes on the game right in front of him.

Agreed and I think he is. He's happy with holding on knowing we still have Gabby as our counter attacking threat. We've gone slightly more defensive.

Harsh. After the Newcastle game people were saying he was the new Des Bremner and (even more remarkably given the season we're having!) that this villa side was the best in about twenty years!

Thing is, when he started he made up for his lack of technique with some absolutely remarkable energetic displays. What the Hell happened to him I don't know, but he looks completely knackered as soon he gets on the pitch these days. And if he hasn't got the work rate, he's not left with much.

Not sure Bannan has done much wrong.

He's not done anything right either. He's taken a couple of mediocre corners and apart from that, barely touched the ball. You'd never know he was on the pitch.

Amazing how often people post the same thing on these match threads. I am full of observations tonight.

We played great for 45, then ok after their first until the moment we took of NZogbia.

I am sorry, I have supported Lambert all season. But that was the most stupid, stupid decision I have ever seen.

It just shows how shite our coaching and tactical awareness is. I can't think of another team I've ever seen that looks so vulnerable with a two goal lead.

Ive stuck up for Bannan just because of his size but unless you are Da Silva, Carziola class ( which Bannan isnt ) then you're no good in this league son

He put a coat on and went and sat down on the bench as soon as he was taken off. I'd assume he'd head for the tunnel if he were injured.

A point at Albion is a good result.

BUT

We should have won it from 2-0, and Lambert has himself to blame for us not getting a 3rd, as they were fecking shit scared of Charlie.

Signings in, please. First half was encouraging, but the way the confidence is knocked out of our team is astonishing. Score against them and they lose their heads. We need some steel, badly.

Better, without Vlaar we would have really capitulated, we had the better chances and some belief would have seen us 3 or 4 up, but boy do we need a defensive midfielder, the room we gave them in front of the penalty box was unbelievable at times. I thought Bennett had a great game by the way and his last ditch tackle against Lukaku got us the point.

Sitting too deep in the second half, and I think N Zog was carrying an injury, without him we lost the get out and hold ball. However I see signs of growing confidence and I think we will tear Bradford a new one.
