Manny Pacquiao could be showing early signs of Parkinson's or Alzheimers.I have seen at first hand what Parkinson's can do.Hope its none of the above.

Just watched Frankie Gavin - i know with his background i should not be a fan ..... but what a class act tonight stopped Welborn in 7th but won every round at a canter...seen him live a few times and gonna make sure i see him again. Plenty of nobs there following him each with their gold chains dangling!!!
But sheer class!!!
Fair play to Martin Gethin as well after 2nd rd just took complete control.

Anyone else going to Wolves tonight for Kal Yafai & Prizefighter? Really looking forward to seeing young Kal, he's going to be really special.

Ha I've just checked the train times and last one is 23:08 show finishes at 23:30. Bugger.

The aggro was on the other side of the ring from me. Best Prizefighter I've seen and not just because I was there. Loved it. Shame about the train times, got to see Yafai in probably his worst performance then had to leg it for the train. Missed the final, I had a pissed up Welsh bird sitting next to us supporting Evans who insisted on a five pound bet to pick who would go furthest. I picked Foot but didn't get to pick up my fiver. Great night though.

Shame you had to miss the final...it was also a cracking bout. Definetley Yafai's worst performance so far.
Probably one if not the best Prizefighter shows yet.

There now has to be some kind of effort to get Murray, Macklin and Barker involved in domestic fights against each other.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me when I attend shows is the amount of people who pay good money and ignore all but one fight, usually a six rounder involving their mate jabbing his way to a points decision against a 3-87 Latvian or Sid Razak.

Why do people insist on doing Audley down. It's not like he's ever hurt anybody. That last fight his opponent just walked up and punched him right in the face. Audley never punched him - Audley would never dream of punching anyone. Why can't we all just leave him alone?

In all seriousness, I'd just rather he didn't get hurt he has a family to care for. He's got nothing to gain, he keeps on banging on about 'climbing the mountain', but he's failed so many times now. He's achieved everything he can and he should stop and be happy with his career.

He's massively talented but has had a lot of problems outside the ring. By this stage he should be beyond British title defences.

He WILL win a world title . ....he is still learning such a shame he is a nose...i love watching him, his style and speed of punch class.

Great performance by Mayweather, foot speed and hand speed were great. He makes his opponents miss so much and he also connects almost at will.
Canelo has plenty of time on his side and has looked way too good for most of his opponents.
How one judge had it even I have no idea.

Mayweather is without doubt the best in the world, and outclassed Alvarez last night.

However, anything he does will always seem a little hollow to me after his refusal to fight Pacquiao in his pomp 2 or 3 years ago or so.

The Haye and Tyson Fury fight is off due to an injury to Haye.

Haye sustained the injury during the final spar of his training camp ahead of the sell-out bout which was due to take place at Manchester's MEN Arena.

A statement from Hayemaker Boxing said: "Hayemaker Boxing regret to inform that David Haye has been forced to postpone his September 28 bout with Tyson Fury due to a deep cut suffered during the final spar of training camp.

"The cut above his left eyebrow occurred in round two of sparring on Friday night (September 19) and required six stitches by a plastic surgeon at St. Thomas' hospital. Because of the gravity of the cut, these stitches will now remain in place for five to seven days.

"Unfortunately, after being properly assessed, Haye was left with no choice but to postpone his fight with Fury, scheduled for next Saturday night in Manchester. He is currently waiting on further medical assessment to determine the extent of the postponement."

When Frankie Gavin turned pro I bet he would have been dead chuffed to think four years later he would be down the bill, winning one of the most boring British title fights ever.

Yes that was truly shite. Frankie won fight fair and square but boring or what.
History made on Sky with Liam Smith winning British title - 3 scouse twat brothers all holding British title at same time. Apparently first time in 104 years that this has happened.

I'm not much of a boxing person but as the week has gone on I've moved from thinking I don't really care about the froch-groves fight because whatever happens an English boxer will be right in the mix at the top to now wanting Froch to plaster him to the ropes in the first 30seconds.  I know the trash talk is all part of it but Groves comes across as a right arrogant little shit who needs a good beating to learn a bit of respect.

I don't think that there is any doubting a Froch victory but i actually quite like young Groves when he beat James DeGale it was a great fight. I'm surprised by his decision to come across as this little arrogant piece of shit - it isn't him - he must be trying to wind Froch up so much that he thinks he will make mistakes - if he is then i say fair enough but can't see 'The Cobra'' falling for that.

Doesn't matter how far in front he was though, the ref stopped it because he thought Groves was going to get hurt if they carried on.  I don't agree and think he should have let Froch land another flurry, which in my opinion would've put Groves down and his legs weren't going to get him back up once he went.

Title: Re: Boxing Thread 2013.

If you look at the heavy stuff Froch took he was shaken for a few seconds but looked back with it in the next clash, Groves didn't at the end.  He fell into Froch, got reset and then fell into the ropes a few seconds later.  After that he got up, Froch went at him and he didn't look like he could cope with it, so the ref jumped in, he could and should have let that clash finish but it'd have ended with Groves on the floor in my opinion so I don't think he's been cheated out of it.

I think Groves did very well though and I think he'll be better for this fight, there were a couple of times where he got a bit too cocky an let Froch make it a scrap, which was naive.

As above, I think the same, that was the first time I sensed a knockout, it's a shame it wasn't allowed to come to a natural finish but I think all the comments that will come out about him being robbed are off the mark, I think Groves slowed down enough that Froch landed 5-6 big hits in a 15-20second blitz and Groves just couldn't handle it.

From the BBC live feed:

Quote
FROCH RETAINS WBA AND IBF TITLES
Right. Many, many of you seem to be suggesting that Groves should have been given longer. At first I thought the stoppage was premature, but then I saw the replays - he was gone, really gone. The referee then took a look at Groves's eyes, who then fell into his arms. Maybe Groves should have been given a chance to go down and get up.

That' how I saw it, I really don't think Groves was going to get to the bell in that round, by stopping it early there's a debate but if it had gone a few more seconds there wouldn't be.

Similar from Eddie Hearn as well:

Quote
Fight promoter Eddie Hearn: "Both fighters put everything on the line tonight. George was sensational he shocked everyone with his performance. I've never seen Carl down like he was in the first round, a rematch makes sense.

"There's always the argument you should be given every opportunity but for me George was hurt late on, he looked like he was out on his feet to me. If it went on another five seconds I'm not too sure if George could have done anything. You have to think of the safety of the fighters. I expected the fight to be more technical, but it was clinical in the end."

In your opinion, Froch was never in a condition where stopping it would be considered, in my opinion Groves clearly was and I really don't think he'd have made the end of the round (I think there was about a minute to go does that sound right)?

@GaryLineker: Not been a great day for referees in either football or boxing, judging by the reaction to the Froch decision.

I t was early, I've said as much, I don't think it was horrendously early.  As said last night, I genuinely don't think Groves would've finished the round, I think Froch is as much a victim as Groves as well, if it had been allowed to go on a little the reality is that Froch would be able to say that the first time he got on top he totally blew him away and knocked him out and you wouldn't have people calling it a fix.

Agreed, it was a world title fight and groves was ahead on all cards - he should have been given the chance to carry on - froch may well have finished him off but groves had earned the right to continue - he wasn't down and out .

Since the Hearn's signed their big contract with Sky their boxers have I would guess 90% of the 'soft decision's have gone their way.
Groves was probably going to lose, but I am getting a bit sick of Eddie Hearn's looking looking like he has been caught with his hand in the cookie jar,at the end of fights.

It would be very interesting to look back at the last three or four years of Sky fights and see how many times the main event has ended in controversy - either a premature stoppage, downright robbery or ridiculously wide scoring in a tight fight - and compare it with what happens on BoxNation or terrestrial.

Only having one promoter for fights on Sky can't help.

As a previous poster has observed If that had been Froch in no way would it have been stopped so quickly.

As I've said before, watch the way Groves falls into the ref as it's being stopped, he was gone as far as I'm concerned, the ref shouldn't have stopped it by any means but I think Froch would've won it if it hadn't been stopped.  Groves was looking good whilst he was quicker than Froch, but in the 8th and 9th you could see the pace of it was getting to him and he slowed down quite a bit, Froch saw it as well, which is why he started going heavy at him.  Even if Groves had got to the bell there's no chance he was lasting another 3 rounds after that.  Most people thought Groves would start well and Froch would take over later in the fight, with round 5 being the common choice, it took a bit longer and Groves started better than anyone expected but once Froch was still going after 7-8 he was always going to start to dominate.

You might be right,
but boxing fights shouldn't be won on what we think would have happened or which way it probably could have gone, they are won on what actually happens in the ring

No one would have had a problem with that fight being stopped if Goves was well behind on points and he was put out of his misery, but he ahead, by as much as 5 on one judges card

I listened to it on the radio, but when I saw the footage yesterday, I was quite shocked the ref jumped in at that stage, he did neither boxer any favours

I think it's more a case of the referee grabbing Groves in a headlock, rather than him falling into him. What the hell was that about? It was almost as if the ref was saying "Go on Carl, give him a cheeky dig in the ribs while i'm holding him"

The more I look at it, the worse it gets. I struggle to recall a stoppage as flimsy as this one

yep I agree,
I was expecting it to be a  50/50 shout by the ref, but when I saw it for the first time it looks bad, and like you say the more you see it it doesn't get any better, there is just no reason to stop the fight at that stage

Again, I agree he stopped it too early, my opinion is he stopped it 3-4 punches sooner than it would've ended naturally, hence why I'm not as outraged as most people.  If you believe he'd have made it to the end of the round then you can be indignant on behalf of Groves, if not your sympathy should be with Froch who is being made a bit of a villain in this by many and his victory is being heavily questioned by most.

I think Froch is becoming the villain of the piece because of the way he has conducted himself, and his ludicrous comments after the fight.

To suggest the ref saved Groves career is incredibly arrogant considering Groves spent the majority of the fight making Froch look rather foolish (two of the judges scorecards were an utter disgrace).

I'd be surprised if Froch was to give Groves a rematch aswell. He knows he got very lucky in this fight, and Groves is only going to improve whilst Froch is on the decline.

I understand perfectly fine thanks, I watched lots of boxing in the past but you don't really get it in Norway.  The idea that because I don't agree with you I haven't got a clue what I'm talking about is pretty insulting and arrogant.

As I said, 'in my opinion' (that's the important bit) Groves wouldn't have made the end of the round.  As he came off the ropes his legs were all over the place.

Watch from 2.35 and pay attention to his feet, he looks drunk, that's what makes me think the decision isn't as terrible as you seem to think.

The key punch is at 2:41 and catches him right on the temple just as he is coming off the ropes, he walked right into it.  As far as I'm concerned the ref then judged that he wasn't capable of defending himself sufficiently and ended it, I don't agree but I also don't think it's a clear sign that it was fixed and that the referee is a massive cheat as seems to be the consensus from many.  As for thinking Froch was talking shit, there are 2 people who can see Groves' eyes after that punch, 1 stopped the fight the other said he thought it was the right call, I'm not going to dispute that.

I don't really care how many Hearn fights have or haven't been fixed, I'm judging this one entirely on the fight I watched and on that basis the ref stopped it the first time he thought a boxer was genuinely in trouble, whether you agree or not that's his justification for his decision, we have no way to know whether he was right or wrong, just opinions.  In my opinion a finisher like Froch stood over someone whose legs had gone was only ending 1 way so the early stoppage had no bearing on the result, regardless of your opinion of it.

Am I still wrong, do I still need to watch a bit more boxing or are you going to admit that I'm allowed to have an opinion, particularly when I can back it up?

Title: Re: Boxing Thread 2013.

Another arrogant post that completely misses the point, I'm arguing that, in my opinion, despite it being stopped early the result wasn't affected, you're basically saying my opinion is meaningless.  Me showing other people saying the same from the BBC was to show that there are people in boxing who think the same.

Me showing a video was explaining why I have the opinion I do.  I'm not saying you have to agree with me and I'm not saying I'm right but I think there's far too many people saying Groves was cheated out of it and I just didn't see it that way as, in my opinion, Groves had slowed down.  I think nothing like enough credit has been given to the amount of solid body blows Froch landed through the fight, Groves was getting his head out of the way well but was taking a lot shots to the body and they sapped a lot of his energy.

Your backing up of your opinion is largely based on other hearn fights being dodgy, which I've accepted, and on it being stopped early but I'm not arguing with you on that, what you've not answered is whether you think Groves would've lasted to the end of the 12th from that point.  If you think he would've then fair enough in your opinion he's had the win stolen from him by a poor stoppage, if not then I don't really get why you're being so arrogant about it because largely we then agree.

As for the ref stopping it in the first round, if the ref thought Froch couldn't defend himself he should have stopped it, largely the difference was that Groves didn't press it home, I agree Froch was in trouble though.  Once again though, I wouldn't have stopped the fight when he did, my point regarding the specifics of the stoppage is that there is an assumed knowledge from many that he stopped it because the fight was fixed, that might be the case, but I prefer to think that the ref made a judgement based on Groves walking into that punch just before he stepped in.  Much like I personally prefer to believe that Froome and Bolt are clean, regardless of any drugs issues in the sport/country.

Once again to make sure you understand:

The ref stopped the fight too soon
The result wasn't affected, in my opinion
The stoppage shouldn't be seen as a clear case of fixing without reviewing the events

If you want to carry the conversation on please stop making this black and white that I must think the stoppage was correct, I've never said that at all, I've simply tried to offer an alternative to the assumption that the fight was fixed.

That's not the same point you've made previously though, you've previously insinuated that the fight was fixed, now you're saying that the ref was influenced by his opinion of Froch and Groves as fighters, I agree with the latter point, I think part of him stopping it early was to protect Groves because Groves has been suggested as having a glass chin, whereas Froch is renowned for being able to take shots (which is why he's managed to make it to the top despite his left hand guard being pathetic).  I can totally understand that argument and I agree with it.

What about Froch's conduct after the fight? Froch knows that this was a poor stoppage and he no longer deserves to be champion, yet he comes out with complete guff about the referee saving Grove's career, and that it was a good stoppage.

If Froch would have just come out and said that Groves was the better man on the night and the stoppage was the decision of the referee, without lying and saying it was correct, he wouldn't be getting the stick he is now.

I can't see Froch giving Groves his rematch either. Froch said something along the lines of "if it makes sense". That seems to me like he's giving himself an escape route.

Froch gave as much bullshit after the fight as Groves and Froch both gave before the fight, meh.

As for the bold bit, That 's just not true, Froch was behind on points but with 10minutes of fighting still to go to suggest he doesn't deserve to be champion is exactly why I feel more sorry for Froch than Groves over the whole thing, Groves has come out of it with his rep enhanced and most of the public thinking he won the fight and was robbed so he's the one that gets the most benefit from this in the long run.  If it had carried on and Froch had carried on pummelling him that might not be the case.

I've just watched the fight back again. I'm no fan of either boxer, just like a good tear up. I had it scored 78-74 in favour of Groves. If the 9th had of been a 10-8 then with Froch coming on strong what a barnstorming finish we would have had. Froch can feel cheated by the ref aswell as there was a genuine chance that he would of pulled off the win, which let's face it after being nearly knocked out in the first and out boxed for most of the first 6 rounds would have been a legendary win.

Surely they have to rematch. Froch just didn't look right in that ring though, lot's of tapping at his nose.

A great scrap but not a great result 114-112 Bika, 116-110 Dirrell and 113-113 a split draw. So Bika keeps his title.
